Crap, I just installed driver 258.96 and when my laptop boots up now, it freezes when the desktop starts up. I had driver 168.96 (I think, can't see it cause i'm on safe mode right now). What should i do?? Should I uninstall the 258 driver? Oh god lol

EDIT: Just uninstalled the 258.96 driver and rebooted and eveyrthing's fine again. Are there different drivers depending on where you buy your U45Jc? I bought mine in Taiwan so does that make a difference. What driver SHOULD I be installing?

Says archive is corrupt, and to my tech-knowledgless brain that doesn't sound good. I think I'll just wait for the driver from Nvidia themselves

I got mine about 12 days ago. I really like it, but i have found some faults. I want to ask any other owners if they are experiencing the same problems as me. If I am not the only one I'll have to choose another laptop. But if it is just me I'm going to get an exchange. Please tell me whether or not you are experiencing the following problems, and to what degree if possible:

    1. Touch pad heats up to around 95-100 F (35 - 38 C) when I play videos, or basically stress the system. I tested the temperature after playing the sample "Wildlife" video that comes with windows 7 for 15 minutes. I tried this with the wireless off and on. Same temperatures.

    2. The battery wiggles a bit. Not a lot, just slightly. I read one other person had this problem, so not sure if its just me.

    3. There is this weird high pitched noise that goes in and out constantly non stop. I think it might be the hard drive, not sure, but it is very annoying. I also read one other person had this problem, but not sure if it is wide spread, please leave your own speculations. The fan has also become "croaky," its hard to explain but its not a smooth humming sound.

    4. My keyboard on the left side rises 2mm above where it should be. I fixed this myself by bending the keyboard back in place, but just wondering is anyone had this problem.

And that is about it. Number 1 and 3 are major issues for me, 2 and 4 are just me being picky. I'd really appreciate a fast response about 1 and 3 because I have to exchange as soon as possible. Thank you ahead of time for any help you provide on this matter, I really appreciate it.

Oh and on a side note, I did a fresh install and only installed the drivers, power4gear and something that power4gear needed to run properly. Not sure of this might be why its heating more than I would like. I have the i5-450M model.

Bah I just wrote a response... and my thumb must have hit the touchpad lol
I just exchanged mine due to constant freezing (apparently not a typical problem with this model)

    AIm,
    1. I have noticed that the touchpad definitely heats up after a while. I can't give you a temp, but it hasn't gotten uncomfortably hot for me
    2. Until I read your post, I had not noticed the battery wiggling. Once I tried it, yes, mine wiggles a tiny bit as well.
    3. In terms of noise, I've only encountered a faily loud humming while installing a game through the cd drive. Besides that, it's been fairly quiet
    4. My keyboard seems to be level

I had a question as well for anyone who might be able to answer it. I've noticed that my processor keeps overclocking in high performance mode. Is there any way to keep it from doing this in this mode?

    Thanks a lot kiz1983,
that seems to have helped, it's happening a lot less often now.
I'm guessing there's isnt a way to completely stop it from happening?

Also, is overclocking bad for the processor in the long run?

Thanks for the response. I really like this laptop, but these problems can add up. I work as a technician and I have seen certain models like this. Too bad, I really liked the look. I'm going to have to get a U30Jc. I'll sacrifice screen size for better heat distribution.

    Well try what I did:

    - High performance mode (power4gear) with SuperHybrid Engine on.
    - AC adapter plugged in
    - Playing the "Wildlife" sample video provided in windows 7 for 15 minutes in windows media player.

Well I just exchanged mine for a U30Jc-X3C, and the U30 is definitely better built. The quality of the U45 is sub par from what you would expect from ASUS. The battery doesn't even lock in properly, it wiggles around a bit. If you really want something like this go for the U30, or wait for another 14 inch with similar specs. Also the when I opened my U45, the keyboard was not properly leveled with the chassis. I had to take it out and bend it into place. Seriously, I'm disappointed in ASUS.

Hi aim25, I'm thinking about getting either the U30Jc-X3C or the U45JC-X3C. I really prefer the screen size on the U45 though. Is their any significant differences other than the palm rests and screen size? Also, do these laptops have bluetooth and/or WiDi? Thanks in advance

UGH... now I'm getting the CPU\HDD whine!

It seems to only be interrupted by HDD activity that for some reason is every half-second or so. Not sure what's sitting there accessing the hard drive while I'm not doing anything.

Definitely the U30, the U45 is not built as well, and heats up way too much. I played a video for 15 minutes non stop on the U45 and the touch pad reached 100 F. On the other hand, for the U30, it did not exceed 90 F. I'd like to tell you the exact temperature but my thermometer just says LOW if 90 F is not reached. Also this problem with the wine, it is really annoying. Go for the U30. The U45 also has a under-clocked G310M, unlike the U30 which is not under-clocked.

probably you got a defective unit... it happens...you go to any notebook supplier thread and i'm pretty sure you will see a few complains here and there...

my notebook does not have any of the issues you reported...the battery locks in firmly and the keyboard is properly levelled....

For prospective buyers being put off by these faulty units, I have not had a single problem with my U35JC. Battery fits tight, no wiggle. Keyboard is flush and firm. Slight flex in the middle but I type at 80+wpm so that can be forgiven. Overall laptop runs cool, never feel the top get warm.. palm wrest and trackpad definately do not heat up. Fan does output warm air (obviously!) but nothing like my old HP DV6000!

All the models have slightly flexy keyboards, and while the amount of flex varies from model to model, the 14 inch laptops usually have more due to the inclusion of an optical drive. The 13" should be more solid in that respect, but at the cost of an optical drive.
