The drivers for the RX580 on AMD site - https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-500-series/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-580 - don't specify which model of the RX580 they are for, presumably they are for both 4gb and 8gb variants?

It's for the full option RX 580 as our gpu is either well optimized or hasn't been affected by this update according to my useage so far, after the update, no issues to report after this update and no changes in terms of unlocking features, but it does hide the wattman feature and needs to be re-enabled in MSI afterburner if you think you can use it for something

Hello everyone, first of all sorry if this post is poorly redacted, im not an english native speaker.
Recently i bought the asus rog gl702zc, the one with ryzen 5 1600 and 8gb ram, no ssd. And since i started using it i identified the fans start to turn on and off randomly when idling or browsing.
For this i tried to have al the windows up to date, also updated the bios to the 303 version and the recomended drivers in the amd radeon settings, but even with this done i'm still experiencing the problem of the fans turning on and off randomly (at 40-45°C gpu/cpu).
So my question is that anyone experienced the same problem? or maybe found a solution like undervolting the cpu with the ryzen master program.
    Thanks in advance.

The fans turning on and off is normal. When under little load it'll shut the fans off, but because Ryzen heats up quickly, the fans will ramp up rather abruptly. There is no tolerance in the curve unfortunately.

I did a fresh install of Windows on a NVMe SSD, and only installed the essential stuff and it behaves a little better, so maybe uninstalling the ROG gaming center will go back to hardware level fan control.

    Hey Guys,
Trying to read though all of this to see what is found but just wanted to give a shout out.
Got my 702 a couple of weeks ago..
So far... ok... pretty ok going...
Im a little let down as it doesn't feel like the same quality my MSI GE62 does.. I'm actually awaiting my warranty 702 laptop since the keys on my key board are all over the place. Not flat in the slightest... Amazon handled this the best.
Mini Displayport... I have some belief that it isn't 1.2? Can anyone confirm this? Mainly I need to know how many monitors I can run, it didnt seem to like 2 at my desk(aoc 24" 1080s, one on Mini DP and one on HDMI, both on a IO gear hub was mostly bug free) but maybe im doing something wrong... I wouldn't be opposed to a new set of monitors if free sync will make the difference..

Type C USB(god I wish it was thunderbolt so I could run a external graphics card...)
Radeon 580....mehhhh I think I need to do some tweaking cause my GTX960m was a bit more stable it seems... buttttt apples to oranges..

I did put in a 860Evo SSD to replace the awful 1tb 5400RPM HDD. That has helped quite a bit as I am using this laptop for engineering purposes.
    New thermal Paste
I kinda wanted to touch on What upgraded RAM people were running. I was looking to go 32gb of 2666.. but I keep getting confused to what supported Memory I could even chose and even then, will I see any improvements over the 2400.. But I do need more ram over the stock 16... my program loaded it up today...
Planning on doing a new PCIe SSD as well. I filled most of my MSI 250gb c drive and Im just prepping for this one..
    Either a 970Evo or a WD Black
Both are in the same price range(500gb-$200). Samsung Rapid mode is cashing RAM to increase its speed and I can see that with my 860... So Id like to decide this and RAM about the same time..

Otherwise its been decent, My creator mode in ryzenmaster is set up to 3675 at 1.1875volts on all cores which seems to be my max stable, but I have never overclocked anything in my life, so this is mostly ignorance at its finest..
I would like to try legacy mode on my programs soon, turn off cores to see if I get any improvements..

I keep my fan speed at 40%; I idle though a normal work day at about 55-60c(according to the gaming center) and a rare peak to 80-85 but it will start winding up at 60 and almost never hit above 75. Even 100% cpu load for a solid 10min it held its own at 70 which Im always delighted to see. (with my MSI i just turned on max fans all day long... it stayed in the 80s for most of the day.. everyday) Now 100% fan loads on this is more of a threat to my coworkers... which I havent given them just yet... lol ;)

Learning, loving it for the most part, I want to get it upgraded and a bit more time to decide how dedicated to it I will be.

The keyboard quality is indeed less than expected for a mid-range gaming laptop. This is the keyboard quality I'd expect from a $300 Gateway computer from Best Buy.

I am running a 34" 3440x1440 external monitor off the display port connection. I do get the full 60fps freesync from it, however the monitor or the card doesn't support virtual super resolution so it won't let me bump up the refresh rate of the monitor to 75hz like I want. I get 62 before it'll tell me it's not supported.

Regarding the memory, you may not see too much difference between 2400 and 2666, however with how stupid memory prices are, a matching stick of the Samsung memory that's in there is $150-200 depending on where you look. You'd be better off buying a new 16gb stick of 2666, sell the one it came with, then buy the matching 16 you already bought (in case you run into compatibility issues or can't afford a 32gb kit right away). At least that's my game plan.

Storage is always nice to upgrade. I replaced the 1tb one it came with, with a 2tb SSHD myself. Until SSDs come down for storage, that'll have to do. If you plan to upgrade the m.2 drive, I recommend going for a larger capacity NVMe drive. I swapped it with a same capacity one from another computer, and with a fresh install of Windows, it's almost a night and day difference in responsiveness.

I also have a 480GB SSD in an enclosure from another computer that I use as a Steam drive for games that would benefit from an SSD. It gets the rated SSD speeds in USB 3.0, but only on the 2 ports on the right side of the unit. If I plug it in on the same side as the USB-C port, it won't even read the drive. Maybe it's because I have a USB-C to 6x USB A dongle there but even with that unplugged it doesn't work. The 4tb external drive works on that port just fine. Just a quirk I guess.

    Welcome to the GL702ZC club.

    Thanks for your feedback!
I'm only recently looking at new monitors but I'm considering things as a whole, if I get them to put at my office, I would get higher quality monitor, trying to go bezzleless is the current ideal. I'm just starting to look at curved since 24-27 inch monitors are seeming more affordable. But the big office key would be to have a triple monitor stand with one location being for a laptop mount... Idk it's a whole dabockle at this moment.

I would absolutely do a nvme drive for the m.2 and I just noticed the 970 pro is only a whopping 30 more over the Evo or wd black.

I saw in the manual the m.2 only supports upto 500gb... Is this true? Kinda a boner kill since I dont have a 3rd or 4th bay of any kind like I loved with my msi computers.

I'm sure someone else here could confirm/deny that capacity limit. SSD prices are stupid too right now so I can't afford anything bigger at the moment.

With how dismal the battery life is, and how much vertical clearance is inside the chassis (despite how much thinner it is compared to the MSi brethren), the battery could've been stacked another layer high and the extra room freed up for another SATA drive. There are solder beads on the motherboard where one more is supposed to be.

If you're aiming for more desktop real estate, dual 21:9 ultrawide would be more cost effective. Heck even Samsung made a 32:9 monitor (essentially 2x 16:9 in one screen), although that's pricey. But that's my two cents.

In regards to monitors, running 1 super wide for my cad/cam programs give me ocd.. I rarely spread to two screens. I was considering a triple setup with 2 outside curved and a central flat. But super wides or anything beyond 16:9 just throws me off when a program is maximize.

This laptop is a desktop for me as I have to travel frequently. I put a lot of trust to such task so I like ironing things out early. I was traveling with like 6tb of data on my last trip.

I think beyond 2tb is outrageous right now. Especially for ssd. I only did my 1tb sata drive because of price or it'd be a 2tb. But the 500gig pcie drive upgrade is a necessity.. Along with ram so I'm hoping for a $500 deal for both if there's a 4th of July sale soon.

Otherwise, forgot to mention I think I'm going to get windows 10 pro for workstation. I do have ultimate performance mode turned on by default on my home edition, which is nice, but I'm definitely not a 'home' media based user.

If you're not going to run things like Remote Desktop, you'd be just throwing your money away moving to the Professional edition. It's not like Windows 7 where home and pro were 2 completely different operating systems. I've ran both pro and home for design work and level editing, there's no real palpable difference between the two anymore outside of IT stuff (couldn't RDP native to my server which was annoying).

I often section my monitor to have my editing program taking up the left 16:9 of space and the remaining slice I'll have YouTube or a tutorial or something up. The 702zc certainly has the CPU horsepower for that kind of multitasking.

I do intend to remote desktop/VPN. If I can get a solid demote desktop connection going, id even go so far as considering a smaller travel laptop. But I do appreciate the lack of bloat and a few of the little things workstation is said to have. I agree. Between pro and home, non professionals wouldn't know the difference..

I heavily multi task and the ryzen does take it well. The ram needs a bit more room to breath. I may have to start turning down my resution because I do tap out the Radeon with normal 3d simulations and movements.. That I think would be the only final flaw if I get to eliminate all others.

A little late to the party, but just throwing my hat in there, I contacted ASUS two days ago about any plans to update the BIOS, was told there were still no plans :(

Something is not well in that link, it says that the only upgrade made is a LCD 120, and battery lasts 1.7 hour's. Either they change the battery and didn't mention or its just random click bait news, because this laptop doesn't last that long even in standby

    Hello,

    I just bought a GL702ZC-GC104T with AMD Ryzen 7, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD , Win 10 Home .

I read maaaany pages here and i understood that there are a lot with problems with this model from Asus ...

I`m NOT experienced with overclocking, underclocking and other software modifications, i want to keep this laptop as clean as i can without too much trouble...

Please help me with some questions:

    1. Please advice me what DRIVERS should i update from here for NOT having other troubles:
    https://www.asus.com/ph/Laptops/ROG-Strix-GL702ZC/HelpDesk_Download/

And an UPDATE GUIDE ... first i should update WIN 10 and after that laptop`s drivers or reverse ?

    2. What means:
    -ATK driver
    -EMI and Safety driver

    3. This laptop has Bluetooth version 4.1 or 4.2 ?
How is your bluetooth range because mine seems to be a little bit weak ....

    4. What is the maximum resolution for this HDMI port ?
I want to connect to an OLD 4K TV .... what kind of HDMI cable do i need?

    5. How can i connect an OLD 4K TV to this laptop with Mini DisplayPort ?
What cable do i need ?

    Thank you very much.

It could also just be a poor translation from Google. Unfortunately, I am unable to read it in its original, native form. Perhaps we have a Japanese(?) speaker on this forum who could do a better job of the translation? Of course, it could just be click-bait...

    1. GPU and Chipset drivers should be updated by downloading them from AMD's website and using Express install option.

    2. ATK driver is essentially the driver for keyboard backlighting.
EMI and safety driver - not a driver. These are simply certificates in PDF form (most likely for re-sellers).

    3. Asus updated most of their drivers on the wesbite, so you can download the ones they supplied and update the BT (same applies to Wifi and Sound) to V10.0.0.448.

    4. Not sure what the maximum resolution for the HDMI port is, but an HDMI cable should handle 4k easily enough. It basically comes down to what the GPU is able to output. The HDMI cable won't necessarilybe limited to a resolution, but the GPU might... so it depends on whether AMD or Asus limited the RX 580's output or not... I don't think anything was mentioned in that regard through.

    5. I've never used Mini DisplayPort.... but I suspect it would be relatively simple like getting a cable that has a mini DisplayPort on one end and HDMI on the other (but I'd just as well stick with HDMI to HDMI cable in that case) - be warned that Mini DisplayPort could easily be limited to a certain resolution (dual link however might work better).

Guys... could you help me identify what could be causing this artifacting?

Its very rare in occurrence... and highly random.
If it happens, its usually in the browser only (not on the desktop or during gaming).

Could be a dying GPU/VRAM or flakey LCD cable. See if it happens on an external display.

As I said, this issue happens infrequently.
Its very rare... and only happens when browsing online in Chrome... disappears if I refresh the page.

The issue has been happening since I got the laptop actually.
I hadn't noticed it happening on the external monitor/TV at all.

If it only happens in Chrome it may be because of gpu acceleration feature, try disabling hardware acceleration and wait for it

If it doesn't then you will have to start testing different solutions because Chrome has lots of issues many regarding gpu check this for starters

    https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...out-turning-off-graphics-acceleration.221328/

O stopped using Chrome along time because of similar issues where video's would always skip seconds and when I switched gpu acceleration off it was so choppy that it made Microsoft edge look and feel superior to the point that it's my main browser.

create a linux/ubuntu live usb and try browsing in chrome and see if it happens there too, might be a windows driver problem. i've noticed firefox on windows being a little strange, when it works fine on linux.

p.s make sure you use a recent release, i.e 18.04 of ubuntu so that drivers are properly supported out of the box.

    cheers

    OK,
Quick update on my end with my GL702ZC:
Received my Amazon replacement laptop yesterday so my Keyboard issue is seemingly resolved.(originally all keys were not flat to themselves or others)
-Pulled the Ole Switch-a-roo with my hard drives with the old unit so my confidential information on this computer is not transferred.
-I do need to re paste the CPU today.

    Still struggling with multiple displays...
-Assuming the Mini Display port is 1.2...
-I have a male to female MDP cable from my computer to my mini Display Port in to 3 Display Port out Adapter/extender.
-> Display ports on the adapter are converted to HDMI then HDMI to the monitors...
    What I know...
-HDMI Cables are good. My monitors have been hooked up to a IO Gear hub to my old computer and ran great for a long time. I wanted to remove the hub and go with a spliter/adapter to remove CPU load since the IO gear Hub was USB driven...
-I tried to enable 'eyefinity' yesterday in Radeon Settings. I could see the 1 monitor extended monitor, but connecting the 2nd extended monitor did not work out. I did read that AMD prefers 'Active' adapters VS 'Passive' ones for splitting like I am. Although since my office bought the adapter, I'm not sure if it is a 'Active' unit, let alone if it is causing my issue connecting to the second display...
-Also, Eyefinity did not let me adjust my laptop monitor enough vertically to actually align... Ultimately it wasn't really helping..

I do need to swap back over to my old computer to see if the mini display port spliter issue remains to determine if any of the adapters are the issue. That should tell me if its only on my end or not.

    Other Options I could consider...
-Run a mini display port to HDMI directly to monitor-1 and Type C to HDMI to monitor-2... (and/or HDMI to HDMI)
-Driver update I maybe need to do???? Im not computer savvy enough to make this call yet..

    What say you all?

Can't exactly reproduce the issue on demand since its very rare... 99.9% of the time it doesn't happen and it goes away if the page is refreshed or just something moves.

About artefacts on screen - it could be soft (Chrome) or Voltage settings (if it too low I got some artefacts).
    -
Whats new about our laptop? Still no way to lock the CPU/GPU voltages?
Any new drivers or ways to activate FreeSync on Windows 7?)

I mean even if the gpu is capable of doing it I don't think it has the required power to push info to one laptop LCD, 2 or more hdmi monitors (assuming 1080p minimum) and eventually another one through the display port

Just got my Samsung 970pro(512gb) and 32gb ram installed.

I was really curious on how to clone the m.2, ultimately, I got a 2.5 m.2 enclosure, put the new 970 in to the pcie slot, and old m.2 in the 2.5 bay and everything worked perfectly, it automatically picked the correct boot drive in the bios every time. So now I'm running the 970pro m.2 and 860evo 2.5(with rapid) and man, did it kick this thing up a notch!

This just happened to me for the fist time. In Chrome. It only lasted a second or two until the page refreshed. I think it's a Google Chrome thing.

By the way, I'm beginning to think of my GL702ZC as a portable desktop, not a laptop.

Is that because of the power of it or because the battery weighs a ton (just ordered mine this morning)

The power. A full blown 65w R7 1700 - upgrade-/update-able (we believe), and a slightly gimped RX580 (not upgrade-able), - https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-580-Laptop-GPU.215184.0.html - All for around $1500.00. I LOVE this computer. I never use it on battery, so that doesn't bother me much. If I need something with a battery I still have a three year old Lenovo Y700 with the all-AMD Carrizo FX-8800P/R9 M385X. That thing can play back video, or web-browse, for hours and hours and hours and... as well as, some light gaming - but only when plugged in.

This eight-core beast kicks ass! Enjoy your new "portable desktop". Undervolting the GPU will shave at least four degrees, centigrade, from your GPU temperatures. At least it did for me. The CPU runs cool. I've never seen it go above 82c. It usually stays well south of 80c, normally between 65c and 75c, even after playing Dirt Rally for an hour.

My next purchase for this computer will be a VR-headset, as well as more and faster RAM, when their prices return to normal, of course.

I've had my eye on it since it was announced at computex last year, then got side-tracked by the new 8750h thin laptops, but for price/performance (especially for cpu horsepower, which is what i'll make use of) i've come to the conclusion that this wins out. I just got mine for £1150, which is just such a bargain for a laptop that seems fairly tweakable/upgradable. The possibility of upgrading the CPU is a bonus but as far as i've seen Asus will not support this upgrade and it will be down to a few enthusiasts in the gl702zc community to mod the BIOS. The screen is poor colour accuracy, which is the only downer IMO, but i'll probably just get an external for that work. Having said that i have considered swapping out the panel with a colour accurate 17.3 replacement, but will prob end up chickening out of doing that..unless someone here plucks up the courage to enter the unknown and leave a comprehensive trail of breadcrumbs behind lol

Kind of what I meant as a portable desktop. Just plug in a proper monitor, keyboard and mouse, close the lid, set it on a self and... you've got yourself a full-blown desktop computer - without the tangle of cables. This thing is just a monster! BTW, I think this is still the only eight core/sixteen thread(!) laptop on the market.

Just to follow up on this power supply thing, mine also came with this 330 watt beast. Just wondering if anyone has successfully used a 280 watt one? And if so, which one did you get? I need to buy a duplicate charger anyway, looks like they're super expensive, does anyone know where is should look for one (the same 330 or a 280) recommendations more than welcome.

303 is the last and only update for BIOS.

CPU undervolt shouldn't affect your score at all, if you play with it enough you could increase your score by undervolting and overclocking.
Bad undervolt will at most result in system instability and close your sistem, witch is safe as the follow up boot will reset your values to default ones.

Thinking of adding a stick of 2666mhz ram on top of the 2400mhz stick that came free with the machine. Is it a bad idea to mix them? I have read that it doesn't matter and the laptop will just run it at the lower speed (2400). It might seem silly to do but i want 2 sticks and plan to eventually replace the 2400mhz with a matching 2666mhz one, but just can't financially at the moment. Basically my question is: my laptop won't die if I do this, right?

I think it's a fine idea. I was also trying to figure out a way to afford to upgrade the amount and speed of my RAM. I think I'll do what you're proposing. I'd go for faster RAM. As fast as will make a difference. I heard 2900mhz was the sweet spot.

Ah really, I thought 2666 was the max for this mobo. Who makes 2900 mhz sodimm? i'd be curious to take a look
