It does have 4 memory slots!?!
-
The simple fact is that our laptops simply aren't ready yet. If you ordered from someone who claimed to have the n61 in stock then I can understand your resentment but if you pre-ordered your laptop you should have fully understood the implications of your order and have no right to complain. It's not like retailers are sitting on a shipping pallet of A1's reading the forum and laughing at us as we squirm in anticipation. It's narguably nerve-wracking but to call it wrong is placing blame on someone who holds no real fault. -
Also, Crucial and Kingston appear to list the N61JQ as only having 2 slots (when I checked last)... -

If my understanding of warehouses, material handling, and manufacturing is correct, retailers should receive information from manufacturers about when the next shipment comes in. An estimated delivery date should be there. I don't think any retailer would like a surprise shipment awaiting them at the loading dock when they arrive at the warehouse in the morning when no shipments were scheduled to arrive.
But you're right; I did jump into the order assuming it was back-ordered and the new shipments would be in within a week or two.
Unfortunately, I stumbled upon this site afterward and found out about the long waits people were experiencing. -
Has anyone experienced any trouble with their touch pad? I've been using a USB mouse and just recently noticed that the touch pad no longer works, although the left and right click underneath still function fine. I've checked and made sure the option "disable when external USB mouse plug in" is not selected. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the ELAN driver, but no luck. Any ideas?
-
We had a large discussion about this early on in the thread. Wow, I can't believe how big this thread has grown. -
Once you receive it, if you haven't already, can you let us know the quality of the work done? Does it look like new, like a refurb or like it was repaired? -
Are their still any of us that are receiving multiple BSOD's daily? If so, how many of us are getting them?
If we get a couple people, I would like to take a look at their memory dumps and see if I can find something common between them. -

Per allyw123's request, I would like to share a small review of N61JQ-X1 (ASUS).
I got this laptop about 2 weeks ago, and so far, it works like a charm. I upgraded my laptop from HP DV6000 (HP) to ASUS N61JQ, so there is a big difference between the two. The biggest differences was the temperature. HP was way hotter than ASUS. Even though ASUS has more power both in CPU and GPU, it was much cooler than my HP.
I also like the fact that the mousepad is a multi-touch one. It really nice, especially if you don't use a USB mouse, to be able to control many things through your mousepad. However, I had a problem with it. I could not disable the mousepad using Fn+F9. Even though it says on the screen that the mousepad has been disabled, the mousepad is still working. This was sometimes annoying when you were typing, because I sometimes click the mouse by accident. But....after downloading ELAN Smart-Pad driver and re-installing it, it works just fine now. You can find all the software you need at
http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ZfpnPRZ5UxVOtrHJ (under download tab)
The 2nd problem, I noticed that the battery was sometimes stop charging even though it was plugged in. It happened when the battery was between 95%-100%. I thought it was a defect. However, I found out later, from several people in this forum, that it was actually ASUS' feature to prevent the battery to be overcharged. So, instead of a problem, this was actually one of the plus points.
Other that those two things above, my ASUS performs great:
- The screen was crystal clear (it was little bit glaring though)
- The speaker was decent
- Very fast processor (maybe this was what I felt because I was using a 4 year old laptop before)
- POWERFUL graphics. I am playing Crysis and Dragon Age with high setting, and the game was running smooth and no lagging. ATI HD 5730 might not be the best mobile graphic card out there now, but it serves most of my needs. So if you were a casual gamer that want that PUNCH in your graphics, but don't want to pay thousand of dollars, this ASUS might be the one for you. I recommended you to use laptop cooler if you use this laptop for a lot of gaming. This will prolong your laptop life.
- Decent battery life. I can get up to 2.5 hours battery life, depending on what kind of operation I was doing. My old HP only gave me about 1 hour or so of battery life, so this was a big improvement for me.
- The lid surface is a fingerprint-magnet though, but it's not a biggy, they are easy to clean.
- The keyboard flexes little bit. It's not as sturdy, but it doesn't really bother me. Also, I have problem sometimes to hit the arrow keys, because they are located underneath the enter key and surrounded by ctrl, shift, and the number pad. It was probably just me though.
One useful tool to get some information from your laptop is PC Wizard 2010. I don't know if you need it or not, but here's the link

I posted some pictures of my ASUS here, in case you want to see.

Cool, I upgraded from the same laptop. HP sucks so much compared to the Asus.

That comp you listed has a blue ray player, a larger hard drive, and a slightly smaller screen.

Amazon and NewEgg are fine, just won't get that personal service you get with the smaller shops like the others. Plus, no customization/add-ons/upgrades, which doesn't bother me. They've mis-advertised in the past (especially NewEgg).
I wanted to get it from Amazon because I wanted financing. But I'm having doubts and I'm thinking of switching over to XoticPC. I think I can manage to pay for the whole thing. -

The N61 has a 2 year warranty dealt with by ASUS direct, but this type of warranty does not fly with the likes of PC World who will try to sell you their expensive almost pure profit extended warranty at the tills. If you want a 2 year warranty you will end probably up paying more at PC World and Currys etc.
If you don't, then, well, its cheaper! -

Was doing some intensive furmark testing to see if I could make the GPU throttle while overclocked. Temps seemed to top out at around 86C with a top notch OC and no throttling

Yesterday i did a fresh install from the recovery disks then i loaded new ati driver 8.692.1.0 in hopes of solving the issue. Although i am getting less bsod's now before it was like once an hour roughly Ive had 3 bsod's since fresh install and new graphics driver. So the problem still exists. Lord Daven what exactly do i need to post for you to look at, You lost me a little bit with the memory.dmp file . Thanks for the help

I was getting tons of BSODs before I RMA for the peeling. I listed down the BSOD that kept occuring with all the info from the dump and they changed out my whole board...intresting. I will have my laptop in a couple days I will let you guys know about everything. -
ok tried to compress the memory.dmp file but says access is denied

So am i correct in saying that the majority are receiving no bsod's at all And its just a select few that are having these issues?

I think most people that use this forum including you wishmaster know that I would NOT!! recommend Newegg. I have enjoyed using Newegg over the years. But I will never buy from them again because of the bait and switch they pulled on the warranty on the N61JQ-X1. And it didn't help that they lied to me about it. -
That is interesting that they changed out your whole mb. Ill check back in later. ill probably just rma it and hope to get a good one next time

I've ordered one machine (MSI-1651) from XOTICPC. The mainboard on this one went bad (not their fault), but so far my customer service experience has been less than ideal.
From what I understand, if you order from Amazon or Newegg, you may only get a 1 year warranty. -
Amazon correctly lists 2 years global warranty for the A1 and 1 year for the X1. 1 year ADW for both.
I believe it was NewEgg that incorrectly stated that X1s had a 2 year warranty when it really only had 1 year. They changed it after people complained to them about it. -

So my laptop finally arrived....used it for about 10 minutes before the windows 7 looked like it was beginning to melt and then went in a storm (icons and windows scattered all over the place). I restarted the system and then at the windows 7 startup I see green vertical lines on the screen and then a BSOD. After that the computer restarts and the screen shows nothing ever again.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe I received that 1 in a 100,000 laptop that has a defect of some sort (I don't want to curse and call it a lemon just yet since I think that is reserved for laptops that need to be fixed 3 and more times). I called Asus and I will be shipping it back to the Miami offices for RMA so we shall see how well Asus handles this. However, the free shipping to and from the Miami offices does help the cost out a bit.
However my shipping cost to and from Miami is going to be $130 dollars which means I actually paid $1100 (Laptop + IC Thermal Compound) + $130 = $1230 US.
The good lord works in mysterious ways and I'm sure he did not want me to use this laptop just yet. I shall not get angry, I shall just send this laptop to be fixed so that I may have a proper first time usage with it.
Btw, the right side of the palm rest was getting a bit warm in that 10 minutes even though I was in air condition. Have any of you experience this or was this most likely a foreshadowing to the death of the graphics card? -

1) Why do you have to pay 2-way shipping? Didn't you just say that the RMA has free shipping?
2) Where did you buy from? The fact that you paid extra for thermal compound implies that you care about temps. Do they not bother to fire up the laptop and make sure the compound has been applied correctly? I guess your issues could be caused by a faulty graphics card, but it definitely sounds like symptoms of overheating. -
Just wanted to pop in and update on my ordering status.
I ordered the A1 on Ebay but with the back order delay and issues listed on the thread, I decided to cancel the order and just go with one of the resellers on the site. I just can't deal with all the wait on the back order end and never mind if I have to rma for any reason, definitely will need the personalized service.
Question, can Donald or Justin give us any feedback on any or frequent rma issues with this model? Just wondering on that..
Also would like to suggest a link on the first page for recommended accessories or upgrades.
Thanks to all that contribute to this thread, I read it daily! -

2) Bought it from XoticPc and they said they fired it up after applying the thermal paste and checked the temps and everything was fine. Perhaps its just a stroke of VERY VERY bad luck that it started to act up once it reached me. -
Hi, quick question. Does anyone know if the ASUS N61JV-JX081V advertised in the UK is the X2 version with optimus technology.
