So as previous user mentioned, my dvd drive was showing blue ray because of daemon tools.

Is it worth upgrading to intel 6200?

I have read various old forums from other sites comparing intel to atheros and most of them says atheros is better, but those articles were from 2006.

    Thanks

Don't bother upgrading unless you have a problem with the Atheros card. The performance difference between the cards is negligible and you won't notice the difference.

    Thanks.
So far my atheros has given me no problems, no dropped signals, speed is good, same as being plugged in.

Oh after the driver update I have 0 BSODs in a week.

I am having a problem with my N61. It just started in the last week. When I increase the volume past 62% while playing sound, I get a crazy high pitch squeal that hurts my ears. My music/games keep making sounds. When my computer is not playing anything and I increase the volume past 80% the squealing starts up. I have tried restarting and playing with volume controls with no luck. I also noticed today if I am playing music and I close the lid while the volume is around 62%, it starts to squeal. Could this have to do with the microphone? I have never had a laptop before, so I never used a microphone either. Any help would be a appreciated.

EvO2005: where are you ordering it? Seems like most places are back-ordered til the end of this month it sounds like.

Got a question...I've never had a laptop before (hopefully it comes soon so it'll be my first :)) so I'm wondering if say I wanted to do some AutoCAD or Solidworks on the laptop and it's connected to a higher res monitor via VGA or HDMI. Can I turn off the laptop display while still using the keyboard?

Well turns out I got this kinda fixed. I tried downloading the audio drivers from the Asus website. First it uninstalled the drivers, the problem disappear, so did all sound! Upon rebooting Windows installed drivers for my sound. The problem went away!! I tried installing the audio drivers from Asus again and the problem came back. So I just let windows install them and now its working. Also when I had the drivers from Asus installed, If I covered the microphone hole with my finger an even more high pitched squeal arose. It's all good now!

You certainly can, but you can do better ;)

When I draw (CAD r2008), I leave the screen on, and put my tools (properties, layers, etc) on the small screen, so I can maximize the drawing space available on the larger screen. It's perfect. The only downside being that after this, a single screen seems like a real handicap. :)

Sometimes I do close the screen for gaming so the GPU only has to deal with one screen for the intense stuff.

allyw123 how does your quad desktop compare to your n61jq? its not that much faster right? like not night and day difference? can u tell me in which ways its faster ?

do you use your laptop on the go more? and your desktop just at home? or do you run both all the time?

i was thinking of doing a build like ur desktop, but i thought if i could have just about the same amount of power and portability, i might as well go for the n61jq....

I have a Quad Core overclocked to 3.2ghz ( Q9450 ) I can honestly say there is no difference in performance. Only thing is it does throttle every now and again when doing heavy tasks.

Risco wondering do you know what temp the 5730m throttles at in the n61.

@billspill- throttling is when the component temporarily lowers its frequency due to either high temps or not enough power being supplied.

ah...touche. :) Thanks for the input. I figured the lappy screen will be good enough for basic stuff and I can plug in for more details when I'm at home. Solidworks on a 52" 1080P should be interesting. :D

Throttling is either from the lack of power or from heat.

No. But I used to have problem with my mouse pad where I can't disable it. I ended up have to download the ELAN Smart-pad driver and install it again. It works fine now.

Regarding your problem, it could be that you turned on the feature where the mouse pad will be disabled if there's any USB mouse present (plugged in). I used this feature sometime so that I won't accidentally move my mouse while I'm typing.

The GPU does not throttle, but the CPU does. You can tell it has done so by checking the windows logs and it says CPU has been limited by firmware with an explanation mark.

The main time I noticed it was when doing a windows backup, it really taxed the cpu and causes all youtube videos to lag and windows to slow a bit.

    I know. It never works.

In all seriousness, for a living I create complete solutions for independent pharmacies (Software/Hardware/OS). I got the Macbook Pro as a gift. Also, I got an HP DV2 as a gift from another pharmacy and it was what I sold to get the N61JQ. ;-)

Billspill, It's like taking a motorcycle out on the freeway and going 95mph instead of 110mph. Could you really tell the difference?
I got my Desktop right after the i7 came out. It was going for $4000 and I snagged it on Ebay for $1700. Ever since then I have been caving this performance in a laptop. Now that I have the N61 my wife has taken over my desktop and I'm parked on the couch with this thing plugged in to my 52"1080P Sony XBR. :D
Even though I have yet to take this out of the house I picked the N61 over the N71 for portability. I love my desktop but if I had to make a choice I think I would keep the N61. I really have no need to go over 95mph.
I always crave the latest and greatest. For $1000 I could get this now and not feel so guilty about replacing it in a couple of years with something better.

Asus has not offered one yet. And no one has been able to find one that will work. The problem is that this model has a unique hinge design for the screen. The hinge is sunken which prevents a larger battery sticking out the back as Asus has done in the past.

good way to put it allw123, i actually have a 2004 r6, so i kinda can tell the difference between 95 mph and 110 mph, but i didnt care if i was going either 95 or 110, because they both are fun enough around the canyon roads! ;)

but thanks so much for the information, yours and along with everyone elses is making me going to buy this!

im going to place my order on amazon real soon, hope they stock up again.

so the n61jq-A1 does come with 2 year manu. warranty and 1333mhz ram?

did anyone buy a warranty from third party to have 3-4 years of warranty?

Here is the latest on trying to get to the bottom of the 9 cell battery GenTech is offering for the N61.

    Greg W wrote:
You list a 9 cell battery at $189 for the N61JQ-A1. I did not know ASUS was providing this battery for this laptop. Is this a misprint or can I buy one of these from you?

    Hello Greg,
The N61, M50, M60, G50 and G51 are build by the same chassis, they share the same battery. yes you can buy from us if you want. :)

Ken, Does this battery stick out the back and if so wont it stop the screen from opening on the N61JQ? Or is it thicker and require another lid for the bottom?
    ________________________________________________________
    Greg,
Yes it does stick out to the back about 1 inch, it won't stop screen from opening and it's not thicker. it fits just like 6 cell but longer.

Ken, Sorry to keep bothering you but we are still trying to clear this up for the N61JQ Owners lounge in Notebook Review. Here is a post that shows the battery won't work on the N61JQ because of the sunken hinge on the screen which is different than the other models this battery fits. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6039957&postcount=2172

The A1 comes with a 2 year warranty, The X1 comes with a 1 year warranty.
N61's come with 1066mhz ram. Although you probobaly won't notice the difference. And lately they have been shipping some with 1333mhz but that is not the specs and you cannot count on getting that. Mine came with 1066mhz. :(
I am not a fan of extended third party warrantys and at $1066 price point it dosen't make any sense to me to buy one for this.

I have read in several places that 1066mhz ram with the usual CAS 7 timing outperforms the 1333mhz at CAS 9 (both CAS timings stock) due to the CAS timing. The math they do is 7/1066 < 9/1333 in units of time (seconds or nanoseconds i forget) resulting in faster responsiveness from the 1066mhz. But they say that 1333mhz is better for overclocking.

I noticed this yesterday. The N61JQ is still selling well over £1000 elsewhere so why are PC World dropping its prices i dont know.

Have we found out if there are any differences between the N61JQ and X64JQ or are they exactly the same?

Im so tempted to click BUY because this laptop is definately the best out there compared to anything in its league or price but i hear there are newer laptops coming out in the next few weeks. SOMEONE HELP ME DECIDE WHAT TO DO!!

    ATTN: Visa signature card users

I had read previously that a couple people have used their visa to purchase this laptop and have got the warranty doubled, i know how that works i just want to double check with any of these individuals if they doubled their parts/labor warranty AND their Accidental damage warranty or were just able to double their parts/labor warranty? Any information would be much appreciated.

Hopefully some of those buyers are still reading this thread, if not sorry for wasting your time.

UPDATE on my RMA for the peeling and other couple problems I had:

The screen, top plastic case, the LCD cover, LCD Bezel and mainboard was replaced on 3.19.10. everything passed testing for the new parts and it was shipped back 3.22.10.

I was surprised how fast they took care of everything for me.

It's not like you are going to get some type of confirmation or cirtificate of an extended warranty. Every credit cards program is different. You need to read very carefully your particular programs rules. But under all of these programs you are not getting an actual extension of the manufacturers warranty. It is more like an extra year of insurance. If your product malfunctions in the year after the manufacturers warranty expires then you apply to your credit card to reimburse your expenses to fix it. Similar to rebates there are all sorts of rules, proof, and hoops to jump through to get reimbursed. So it is very much up in the air if you are really going to be covered should you have a problem in the "extra" year.
Another similar example is using Bing cashback. Yes you might as well try and get it. But in the end who knows if they will find some way to not give it to you. Where as an actual Warranty is a lot more cut and dry.
As far as if your ADW is also extended, I don't think anyone should give you a yes or no. If you really want to know you should call your credit card company.

I think we need to put something on the first page for when shipments of X1s and A1s arrive or are expected to arrive at retailers.

Waiting 10 days+ for something you ordered online and for this much is nerve-wracking and just plain wrong.
