Or move to Windows 8.x Even though Windows 8.x still causes black screens (including with the latest 14.4 drivers) with anything lower then 75% brightness level, at least it works.

I might try installing the latest drivers on windows vista for the heck of it and see if it causes any issues.

I moved on to windows 8.1 update 1 on my n61jq and all the drivers work posted on the first page still having an issue when my laptop is on battery with the screen brightness going lower then 75% but other then that it seems to work fine with the latest radeon 14.4 drivers. still haven't tried vista yet to see if it gives the black screens. but the only solution to that driver issues past 13.4 is to move to windows 8 at this point.

Does anyone have the driver for the Elan TouchPad for it to work properly with Windows 8.1. Like tapping with two fingers brings the "Right Side" menu.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

For the Realtek Audio drivers and the link you provided, I see 2 different ones for "Version 6.0.1.6413" and I don't see any with "SRS Sound".

Anyway, have been having trouble with my mic lately and I wonder if you know which drivers I should download.

Also, I removed SRS sound a while ago. Should I have kept that? I thought it was pointless.

I didn't see it doing anything. :/ When I had it and clicked on the menu, all it did was give me different settings for different things (Movies, Music, Games, etc.). I didn't see anything that made it sound better. I believe my laptop runs off the Realtek Audio Driver, so I thought that is what handles my audio quality, not SRS.

honestly windows 8.1 with update 1 isn't a bad OS. when windows 8 came out I didn't like it at all but windows 8.1 update 1 fixed a lot of complaints I had with Windows 8. Granted there is no start menu yet, that won't debut until Windows 8.1 update 2 in Aug, but I do notice an improvement in some games fps going from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 update 1. it's nothing monumental by any means but a couple more fps per second on avg sure is nice. Also the memory usage footprint is smaller in Windows 8 then in Windows 7. I noticed that. in windows 7 it would take 25% memory, with 8gb of ram but in Windows 8 it takes up about 18% memory. Not a big diff but a diff for sure. I encourage users to try Windows 8.1 update 1, by making a partition and installing windows 8.1 update 1 on that new partition, before doing a full reformat, that's what I did. What's nice about Windows 8.1 update 1 is that it boots right into the desktop now bypassing metro for non touch screen users. then add start8 to add a start menu to the taskbar and it feels like windows 7 all over again. Windows 8 has come a long way imo then when it first came out and honestly it's getting better and better with each passing update.

for anyone interested in upgrading their wireless network card to 802.11AC this works well on the Asus n61jq laptop, for 32 bucks. I just upgraded my old N card that came with bluetooth 2.1 to this new wireless AC card that comes with bluetooth 4.0

    Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC, dual-band, 2x2 Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.0 Mini PCI Express combo Adapter - 867 Mbps+300Mbps - Internal - OEM

    Hi,

After having the same problem about the blank screen and looking for help in the forums, I think I managed to get it working by doing some sort of custom install of the Catalyst drivers.

First of all, I own ASUS N61JQ laptop, with ATI Mobility Radeon 5730 1GB graphics, running Windows 7 Home Premium. Bought in 2010.

My issue were very similar to many others, as I googled the forums: Any catalyst driver past 13.4 will result in blank screen (actually LED backlight turned off). Only way too see something was to connect external VGA monitor.

Below I try to describe how I managed to get some newer drivers working. I'm sorry if it is not too clear, I may have taken many unnecessary steps, as I was pretty desperate about my laptop and AMD :/

    1) First of all I updated my BIOS to v212, I read somewhere that this may cause the issue.
    2) Next I uninstalled the old catalyst drivers from the Programs & Features. "Uninstall all AMD software" Do not reboot yet...
    3) Next I used Driver Fusion to clear any remaining pieces of my old AMD drivers. Reboot.
    4) Now installed the last known stable version of drivers (Catalyst 13.4). Reboot. (Everything should work as normal to this step) I didn't install the Control Center, as I like to configure each game by itself.
    5) Now. Download the latest 14.4 drivers and let it extract to C:/AMD/Support. Close the setup, do not install anything yet.
    6) Open device manger -> display adapters -> Right click and "update driver" -> "Browse my computer for driver software"
    7) Point to this directory: C:\AMD\Support\14-4-mobility-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql\Packages\Drivers\Display\WB6A_INF
    8) Let it finish the process, reboot if asked (I do not remember)
    9) At this point you may have the blank screen issue at startup, so plug in the external monitor.
    10) Repeat point 6, but this time after "update driver" -> "Let me pick from a list of drivers"
    11) Choose AMD Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series Version 8.920.0.0 [9.11.2011] (This is the older driver than 14.4)
    12) Install it and reboot. Keep fingers crossed. If all goes well you should see the backlight problem fixed (It worked to my surprise)

I think this configuration will install the combination of newer drivers and older drivers. These are definitely newer, because I was able to run Wolfenstein: New Order without the freeze in the loading screen. That happened with 13.4 drivers.

Hope this works for somebody else and in the future AMD will release proper drivers.

    Good luck :)

Thanks for sharing. I got a few questions, if you don't mind answering.

    1) My laptop, is right next to my router. So will upgrading still be worth it? I don't really care about range, b/c I always get full bars on my laptop at home, and I hardly take my laptop to other places.

    2) Will upgrading make my speeds faster (like closer to wired connections on my network)? SpeedTest.com says I got about 25 Mbps with the stock wireless card, while a wired computer on the network gets 55 Mps.

    3) Will this give better ping/latency in games?

    4) Would you say this is the best wireless adapter to get for this laptop? I remember there was this one wireless adapter for this laptop that everyone upgraded to a couple of years ago (I forgot the name of it through). I'm not sure if this is the one you are talking about.

as for range, no if it's that close to the router then it wouldn't even matter if you had wireless g. but it's nice if you are going to take it on the go where it will give you a lot more wireless connection points because of the range.

As for speed test wifi can play a factor in speed. no this typically is for the further away you go away from the access point the more drop off can occur, especially around walls even if it's 15 or 20 feet you can start to notice the drop off. Wireless AC has a lot longer range then wireless N so the drop offs are not as close. As for your question wifi is typically slower then a wired connection, but it shouldn't drop that much esp when you are next to the router. I mean it should be around at least 50mbs - 53mpbs. in this case it could be your wireless card. have you tried using another wireless device to see what it reads? if it's running above 50mpbs then it's your laptop wireless n card, if it is having the same problem then it's your wireless router.

ping/latency depends upon your internet provider connection. ping and latency only becomes a factor on a device the further you get out of range of the access point, which weakens the single.

what wireless AC does besides allows transfer rates up to 867mbs and a lot further wireless ranger is bring in better power management which can extend the life of your battery from up to 5 to 10 minutes longer then wireless N does. Besides that the intel 7260AC wireless card also bundles in the latest Bluetooth 4.0 which allows a much smoother connectivity to Bluetooth devices and is 12x faster at transferring data at 24mbs per second vs Bluetooth 2.1 that are in n61jq series. So you get wireless AC and Bluetooth 4.0 for 32 dollars. it's actually imo worth upgrading just for the cheap price alone.

I have a N router. My laptop is basically my desktop. I don't take anywhere. I rarely do, unless I go on vacation or a trip somewhere. And my battery has been dead for more than a year now lol.

I might consider updating later on. But I think the issues I have now is my router. I was able to get a speed boost with my wireless by changing the wireless channel for my router. I live in a apartment complex, so there is a lot of interference I bet. I don't think a better wireless adapter will help, since I already got around 20 different wireless networks on channels 1,6,11 each.

I think only that part is necessary, tough mine is version 12.104.0.0 with date 3/28/2013 in driver details.

you can upgrade to v13.4 fine and even upgrade to the newest v14.4 with windows 8.x as long as you don't set the screen brightness lower then 75% or else it will black screen. I mean imo there really isn't a need to update your gpu drivers unless there were fixes or tweeks for those drivers made your your gpu model. I don't know when the last real update was for the radeon 5730 but it's been a long time ago. I think 12.8 was the last time anything was mention in improvements for the radeon 5730.

Well 13.4 has been confirmed to work on all our notebooks.

I agree that there really wasn't a real update for our GPU in a long time. 12.8 was probably the last real up. I never saw a performance increase in updating my drivers anyway. One time, for a game, it would flicker black, and the driver update fixed it. Any driver updates now probably don't do much but update the interface and fix minor bugs.

I don't have W8, but I trust SteelCity. He's a great member of ASUS N61JQ community, and probably the most informative member that remains.

So, last week I reinstalled system (for the 1st time since I bought the laptop, since I work with graphics and reinstalling all those programs and plugins is a pain I tryed to avoid) and when some of my plugins and programs refused to work I gullibly installed latest video drivers from ATI and thats how I found this thread about black screens and what not :) (only on the 2nd atempt catalyst instalation crashed and I wasn't even able to boot windows anymore)

    PROBLEM:
Now I have my Win 7 64 bit reinstalled again. I don't need newest version of driver since I do graphics, not games and my software requires only v12 and higher. So the supposedly working "13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql" should do.
when I uninstall drivers, block windows update from doing it automatically (got couple of blue screens of death before I noticed this habbit) and run AMD catalyst 13.4, it only lets me install HDMI audio driver *. No more options. So I let Win update to install that default driver (8.680), ran catalyst again, custom install, now I got whole list of features, including display drivers and graphics accelerators. In device manager I uninstall the display driver (just uninstall, not delete), in C:/AMD../config/InstallManager.cfg change last line "WorkaroundInstall=false to true" (as someone sayed it should prevent instalation from crashing to blue screen) and run the catalyst 13.4. It installs all the stuff, but when installing display drivers, windows message pops up that its installing divers and that it has been succesfull. After instalation, there is a log file that says "display driver fail"** and device manager says I still have driver 8.680 installed instead of 12.104 from catalyst. WHYYYY?
Could anyone send me a link to last 100% working version of display driver that worked for ASUS N61Jq Win7 x64 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1GB card? Ideally just DD, not CCC if it can be separate, So I knew I haven't downloaded wrong stuff.
    Thank you.

Shpati, you seem to know your way around theese driver issues (see my lament if you will), could you please somehow send me last guaranteed working version of driver for N61Jq ATI Radeon mobility 5730? (which I guess would be the 13.4)

Yes, sure. I got my 13.4 from here:

An archive of AMD Mobility Catalyst Windows 7 x64 drivers – PCR's notepad

I honestly am only familiar with the video drivers. I've downloaded the other drivers for the chip set, sound, wireless adapter, and programs, but literally saw no differences. So I don't mess with those at all. But video drivers can be important, as some games may require them, and I like having some extra features in the Catalyst Control Center.

I might try another reformat/factory restore on your computer. However, before you start installing drivers, remove all bloatware and then keep updating your windows until there are no more updates. That way you can all the important updates like .net and framework. It will likely take more than 5 restarts to finally get them all, and it will take a while. And from there, install the video driver 13.4. Also, I use Windows 7.

I had one failed factory restore. I would get blue screens during a driver update and I couldn't install one of the Windows Updates. After I did what I said above, the problem was fixed.

I can't remember if I let Windows update my video drivers and then I just installed over it. If I recall correctly, what I did after I let Windows update everything (including the video driver) until there were no more updates, I installed the latest video driver update from the official ASUS N61JQ Driver page at the official ASUS Driver and Support website. Then I installed 13.4 over that.

But I think the most important thing to do is uninstall all bloatware (so windows doesn't try to do useless updates for program and software you don't use anymore). And then update everything for Windows. Keep rebooting and checking for updates until there are no more to do.

If none of this works, you can also try installing the driver in safe mode. Sometimes this helps. And I think this helped me in the past with a previous driver that wouldn't install in regular mode.

I had to replace my hard drive in my laptop and after that I have been having the issue that my trackpad hasnt been working I have installed the latest driver the one on the first page of this thread, I get this error when i go into device manager. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52). I also get an error that my windows is not genuine.

    thanks for the help

Yes I tried the new 14.9 drivers. And yes it had the same issues. Laptop screen went black. HDMI works fine out to TV. Had to do the Hardware Manager/ video device driver/ revert to last driver. 13.4. Never did try the Function screen brightness after installing the new drivers.

My only issue is with BF4. It always has a popup window saying it doesn't like the drivers. And if you don't click OK it won't run. And even if you run a match. It often will load a new server map and show that your playing the game but won't open the game window. PITA!

**This has been a great laptop. Especially for the original cost. It's still running strong and playing most current games in low at acceptable frame rates. I've been playing; BF4, Firefall, and Archeage recently.

Yea. It isn't performance issues, but those messages saying "update your drivers". I would like to get rid of those.

I'm still running World of Warcraft great but get the old driver pop message, and I've been watching a tons of shows and movies on my tv via hdmi.

I just have one issue with the 13.4 driver. My application profiles won't work. So if I want to change the 3d settings for a game through CCC, I have to change it all together, and remember to change it back. I can't make a profile for each game b/c it does nothing.

    Dear glad N61JQ users,
I'm running Windows 8.1pro with Catalyst 14.9.2 beta driver and works great with last generation games (Grid 2, NBA 2k15 and Payday look great).
I don't know if someone posted this, but anyway I'm gonna tell you how to fix the excesive brighness (because of the black screen well known problem of raising br. down less than 75%):
-you just need to open catalyst control center
-select from 'desktops and screens' the option 'my integrated screens'
-Select 'screen color' where you'll be able to configure your screen to a suitable brighness level for your eyes (I have 0, 100, 1, 200). And desktop color with the values are 1, -32 and 13. If somebody know better combination please post it here :)

I don't know why, Fn+F5/F6 does not affect the br. level of my screen anymore, as it's always fix when you try to adjust... I hope someday we get an unofficial fix for this, because I don't expect any official one...
Anyway, still happy with this great laptop I got 2nd hand last year :)

    2 things more:
-I've got bios 208 and want to update to 212, I suppose some of you made it successful, is it worth? Will I need to configure again the new BIOS or already comes with the optimal configuration for this great laptop?
-Did anybody find a battery that lasts more than 2 hours? I bough a chinese one but lasts 1 hour luckily.
-When I'm running some games the laptop gets very hot and switches off, do you have the same problem?

If anyone could help with this I would really appreciate it.

So I bought this laptop in 2010 and I have never knowingly updated any drivers. I want to update my video drivers to try and get better performance out of some old games I play. I've tried using the AMD catalyst software and it either doesnt install the new drivers or it does and I get a black screen. I've searched asus's website for new drivers but the only ones they have available are really old 2010ish.

    My Specs:

    Asus N61JQ
    Windows 7 64 with service pack 1
    Intel(R) core(TM) i7 CPU Q720 @1.60GHz
ATI mobility radeon HD 5730 driver version 8.680.0.0 date 11/18/2009

I'm not the best with computers but I am a fast learner. If someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Sorry to be THAT guy mate but did you take time to read the topic? That's the most talked about subject here. Practically every single page talks about this. But since this is my first post and I got the time here we go.

Never mind Asus video drivers, download them from AMD directly. With Windows 7 the most recent driver you should/can use is the mobility 13.4. Anything more recent and you will get a black screen, unless you hook your laptop to an external monitor. Win 8 and 8.1 don't have that problem (only if you lower the brightness bellow 75%).

But I'll say that it's really worth it upgrading to windows 8.1 (and getting a start menu program...) and installing the most recent video drivers. For me it meant the difference between Watch Dogs being unplayable and playable (it was still a bad game though).

    Sarmatios,

I was thinking about getting Windows 8.1. World of WarCraft has been running slow for me on this expansion. I've been using the ATI 13.4 drivers.

You think if i use the newest drivers with Windows 8.1, it will make a good improvement?

Hello there Shpati, I think you were also on the Guru 3D topic "Problems after driver 13.4" right? I posted there under YAAMDU.

I can't really say with certainty since I don't play WoW myself. In my case, maybe there were specific problems with Watch Dogs that they fixed on the more recent versions and that's why I got it running? Then again, version 13.4 is from April 2014, almost a whole year of updates has gone by and adjustments must have been made in general and possibly some specifically related with WoW performance. If you have the time and the patience look over the changelogs for anything more specific.

But an improvement is certainly a possibility, I played trough Assassin Creed IV (some slow down on smoky sessions on IV, but that happened to most people) and Shadows of Mordor without issues and I don't think WoW is as graphic intensive as these games are, I definitely think the extra performance is a real possibility. I have yet to see a detailed explanation of the benefits of getting the newer drivers vs remaining on 13.4 but in the end I say, go for it. If you end up upgrading your OS I highly recommend getting a program to add the start menu back on win 8.1. It will make the transition almost painless.

On another note, our laptop is nearing the end of it's lifecycle, I am not getting a good performance with AC: Unity (hoping it's mostly due to the horrible configuring and problems with DirectX compatibility on Ubisofts' end) and from now on I fear it is only going downhill from here.

    Anyway best of luck.

Repost from the owners's lounge since I figure this thread is much more visited.

Just a general FYI, our video card CAN run Unity!

After upgrading the memory to 8 Gb.
And grabbing the latest ATI beta driver.
And setting all the graphical options to minimal.
And not minding lag ON MENUS and ty lock-picking minigame (fight against half a dozen opponents in AI crowded Parisian streets, spamming smoke bombs? No problem. Menus? Those are tricky to render.)

Anyone else trying to run it?

I think I've had my N61Jq since late 2010 and all my drivers are up to date except that I use 13.4 for the gpu as anything further has its problems as you know. My issue is that with most games even on the lowest possible settings, my frames per second are 15 at most. This is the case for Far Cry 3 and The Witcher 2, both on lowest possible settings. For Borderlands 2 I think it was around 20 frames per second, as it was for the Witcher 1. I can't work out the reason why this may be. Although I do wonder if it has any relationship to the extreme temperatures this laptop seems to stay at, easily staying at 97 during gaming even with a pedestal fan aimed at the vent. If I don't use a fan in summer, it will go over 100 and overheat/crash during even Dota 2.

Has anyone else ever experienced any problems such as these?

Edit: The same fps problems persisted even when trying 14.4 and using an external monitor.

Can I ask where do you get the most up to date drivers for the other stuff? I have never updated my wireless LAN, sound, or chipset drivers.

As far as your FPS problem, I'd say it's a high chance of a overheating problem. 97 is really high considering 100 is the ceiling. I'm not sure how you monitor it, but if you use a gadget, there's a chance it was 100 but dropped a couple when you minimize to check.

You should clean the fans with compressed air every few months.

If it's still overheating, you can try playing on your laptop with the bottom panel removed.

Otherwise, you will likely have to replace the thermal compound for your CPU and GPU.

First do a full uninstall of your current driver, using drive sweeper is recommended, then install the latest ati driver.

In my case there was a significant difference on AC:U performance after I properly uninstalled my previous driver before installing a new one.

As for the overheating, if you are comfortable with this, open your notebook and do a proper cleaning of the fan and heatsink and reapply the thermal paste after removing the old dried up paste (buy arctic silver). It's cheap and makes a ton of difference if you are having temperature related issues.

Beware when upgrading drivers, some N61jq models have trouble booting up caused by the LAN card, the only solution for me (and others) was to disable it on Device Manager on safe boot without network, otherwise my laptop would freeze on boot. The latest driver didn't fix it for me.

As for updates in general look up the links on the first page of this thread they mostly lead you to the pages of the devices themselves so you can see if there is a newer update than the one announced (the further to the bottom of the page the more recent the driver), after clicking on it it will display the proper release date of the driver.

    Yup, it does.
As usual, use DDU first. Haven't taken it on a test drive yet so can't comment on the specifics.

Awesome. I seem to recall anything after a certain version was causing black screens at one point.
