Modding: what about an "Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230" instead of 6200 and a backlight keyboard (ebay item)? It will have also Bluetooth 3.0. Currently using N53SN (FHD, 500GB, NVIDIA 550M).

I got an ASUS N53SV last week and to get rid of all the bloatware I decided to give it a nice clean install of Windows 7 64bit (With SP1).
Before I wiped it, I checked the device manager just to have a quick look. Everything was fine.
Pretty much everything worked out fine after the clean install. Volume buttons etc. work as they should after installing misc. drivers from the ASUS support site.
BUT... No matter what I do I simply can't get the bluetooth working.
Immediately after the install windows found the drivers itself, Generic Bluetooth Adapter, but tells me that the device has problems. (The typical Code 43)
"This is just because I need the correct driver.", I think, and download the one from the ASUS support site. However when running the installer, it tells me that it can't install because "No bluetooth device was found."
I have already fiddled with the on/off switch and the fn+f2 switch, and the two different utilities that seem to be requried for the buttons to work:
Wireless Display Application and ASUS Wireless Switch (Wireless Console3) Utility, who seem to be somewhat trying to do the exact same thing using different graphics.
Has anyone figured out what is needed to install bluetooth? Is there some specific order to do it or something?
Asus email support has proved useless for now. They just keep asking me to remember to turn on the wifi-button first, no matter how many times I tell them that I have done that already -
Would u say the quality of the keyboard is good?
Too bad about the review on the screen, just ordered xv1.
Hope it's not that bad... -
-
The XV1 display is great, that review was for the A1 lower resolution display.

I have been lurking this thread since some days ago and its look this is the perfect laptop for my needs, just i have a newbie question , I'm looking doing some medium gaming on this laptop and i understand is far from playing games at 1920 X 1080 resolution at playable Frames, so heres my questions: how its looks playing games at lower resolutions in a 1920 X 1080 display? or its better to get the N53SV-XE1 with the lower resolution ( 1366x768) so i can play lets say at native resolution?. Hope you can help with your knowledge guys......

Yes that is the problem you must use home premium or buy a professional license key.

Anyone else faced this problem? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks fam. -
looks like i have to reinstall then.. -

Good luck... -
I'm trying to install W7 to a newly installed SSD (Intel 2.5-Inch 160 GB X25-M). I get to the 'Where do you want to install' bit but can't get it to recognise the SSD. Everything worked fine on the install for the original HDD, and I have the latest driver from ASUS
Any help most appreciated -
-
-
yes it does
I've tried swapping between IDE & AHCI as I'd read that might be the problem but no luck. -
the wireless on this laptop is sooo bad! it drops in and out all the time for a router thats only a few rooms away (and my old laptop handled fine!) and way to fix this?

hi, one more owner of N53SN
so far the only con that I've about this notebook is the screen, the angles is bad and the colours look washed out.
Startup time is about 49 sec and I only use msconfig
Temp running NFS Hot Pursuit

Grabbed a N53SV-XV1 to replace a 5 year old Sony... best investment I've made in a while. While I'm pretty pleased so far, I was planning on making some upgrades.
I've already thrown in 8 more gigs of ram, and plan at some point to do the following upgrades (preferably all in one fell swoop)
1) SSD with fresh install
2) Upgraded wifi card
3) Backlight keyboard
4) Replace DVD with blu ray
My question is, has anyone actually done the last two options? I've seen the other links to the backlight keyboard threads for other PCs, but would prefer to see someone do it on the N53S series first, as I'm not normally someone who does soldering, although I would love a backlight keyboard. Also, not entirely sure how to do the drive. Do we need a special one due to the cover ASUS put on it, or is this relatively easy to take off and use a generic laptop drive?
This is probably a secondary dumb question, but is there anyway to change the actual keyboard layout? I would much prefer a longer right shift key and have the 4 way pad moved over a couple of keys... probably not possible, but I can dream. Also, what is the difference between a chicklet keyboard and the one the laptop has by default? I don't see too much wrong with the actual mechanism (although I'm not sure what it is called), but rather the layout seems to be an issue. -
Hi!, I have a new n53Sn and I have two problems:
- The keyboard: don't you feel that the central part of the keyboard is not fixed to the laptop and is a little bit curved? This is due to the way the keyboard is attached to the resto of the laptop. Any solution? Do you have the same problem?
- The graphic card: when I use nVidia 550M with 3dStudio max some strange things happen. Evrerything is clipping and changing posiiton. I've looked for some drivers but there are only Beta releases and the porblem persists? Any ideas? -

So I've been thinking of getting one of these, it seems like a well built computer with excellent hardware for its price, but I was wondering if I could hear, from some of the people who have it, whether or not the terrible keyboard quality outweighs the pros of this thing. It seems like there's a unanimous agreement that it's flimsy, oddly designed, and overall annoying to work with. Is there any way to get used to it, and if not, is there any easy way to replace it manually?
Also, in terms of battery life, is there a way to replace the 6 cell battery with a 9 cell one? I've heard of people doing it on other ASUS models, but I'm still not sure if it works with the n53. -

In response to the other question, you do have to install the chipset drivers and the VGA drivers for the integrated grpahics card.
PD: If anyone is having some issues like mine with any applications (as 3D Studio Max) please tell me because I don't know if my card is wrong or the problem is with the drivers... -

This worked a treat - Cheers! -

Hi all I just picked up my N53SV-XV1 from Amazon. Really excited about the features upgrading from a Inspiron 1501.
I wanted to add a few items and I am on clear exactly on these items.
I under stand if I want to upgrade my Wireless card to a N6200 it will work fine since it is dual antenna. However, if I try the N6300 one of the cables will be left loose since the N53SV is only dual antenna. So it is just better to get a N6200?
Also I wanted to upgrade my PC to have bit more ram than the 4GB included now.
I understand I need. 9-9-9-24
I was going to pick this kit up: Amazon.com: Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9: Electronics
It is 2x2gb. I need to fill both slots. So it would be total of 4 sticks and 8gb combined with the OEM ram?
Also did anyone find a Blue-Ray player that will fit and replace the DVD multi? -
-
Someones tried overclocking the nvidia GT540?
I already tried but did not turn up as
GPU Clock 841 Mhz
Memory 950 Mhz
Shader 1682 Mhz
temp max 82 C
Any suggestions on what speed to use? -
Im looking for a replacement for my ASUS V1S, and this seems decent enough.
Anyone know how does this compare to the Macbook Pro 2011 model, quality/build wise. Performance seems about equal, but I smell a bit of plastic fantastic. Price is no matter. Is the N53SN too bulky to bring at school 3-4 times a week? -
Anyone source a hard drive caddy for the N53 DVD drive? I'd like to add an internal SSD that I have sitting around, and you can't boot off of USB (2.0 or 3.0) Windows 7.

Thanks! Between that and the chicklet keyboard, that solves most of my complaints about this little beast of a laptop!

I just finished tweaking my new OCZ Vert 3 and here are the results.

Is the flex is the keyboard gone after you replaced it ? -

Just picked up N53Sn-XR2. Looks like it is similar in hardware
to the N53S series like the N53SV, etc. The unit is
incredibly fast (i7/SANDY/GT550 woah). Will it last long?
Is anyone using a cooling unit undereath yet?
Air coming out the side is HOT when exercising the hardware.
1) Did anyone make a nice list of all the drivers you need to install when
doing a fresh install of WIN7 yet? What are they exactly?
Looks like some can't get some things working like BLUETOOTH after this?
I'd like to put a solid list together.
2) Someone mentioned Windows7 x64 service pack 1 doesn't work with this laptop
series. What exactly are the details with that?
3) It seems the official GeForce GT 500 series drivers finally came out!
However they will not install. What drivers are people running
and how did you get them to install? Are we going to be able to use
the latest drivers from nVidia as they come out? They are updated
fairly often.
4) Electrical leakage. Is there something seriously wrong with the hardware
in this series? Hate to return this beast. Never heard of anything like
this kind of flaw in a laptop before. -
Regarding the fresh installation, try to avoid to install crapware or applications from Asus disc you do not need. It is good for short boot time.
2. No problems with the installation of Win7 x64 with service pack1.
3. In my opinion the official drivers should work, but if not pls check often NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com
4. Electrical leak was my problem lately, but I overcame it. This laptop needs electrical installation with "ground" or at least "0". Without it it is possible you can feel "vibrating effect" under your fingers on metal parts of the unit. I had renovation lately and workers "forgot" to plug ground wire, therefore I had the problem with such effect. -
Need some help, desperately...
I did a clean install using the links from this forum (awesome work and thank you very much). I installed all of the recommended drivers from the Asus website, however; I am getting "Unknown PCI Device" in the device manager.
Here's a list of drivers I installed plus a copy of my device manager. Can someone post a copy of their device manager so I can compare ? Or if you know what is missing, please let me know.
Thanks!!
