Just upgraded to windows 8 release preview...Can anyone please give me the link to be able to use the top 5 buttons on the laptop? Can't find it anywhere and to be specific they are the Volume buttons and pause and play near the silver grill. Thank You!

I actually had the same problem before. But then I've upgraded my RAM to 16Gb HyperX 1866mhz (not that I need that much lol) - and after a fresh reinstall (the one w/out the bloatware), I've managed to avoid the freezing problem and hibernating is no longer a problem. I have no idea what solved the issue but I guess it was probably the RAM - but hey, maybe you can try a fresh reinstall first?

*oh btw, and no, factory reinstall from within the ASUS mirror won't solve the problem. Been there, done that. *

    Hey guys,

Struggling badly to run Diablo 3 (can run most other games fine, just the GT540M seems to have horrrible support (have tried a bunch of drivers and fixes)) a bit, and wouldn't mind upgrading gpu (as i'm doing a fair bit of rendering with it atm as well)

Just wondering if there were any CPU/GPU upgrades possible on a n53sv, with the i7 2630QM?

I was hoping something with a similar socket but faster i7 and better GPU might be available?

Cheers, tried searching and read about 60 pages but eyes started to bleed :p

    CHeers,

    K

You can upgrade RAM and the Hard Disk but not the CPU/GPU.

One other thing, I was just reading up on a fault with the sata ports on i7 26xx series motherboards, does anyone know if this applies to the : Asus Laptop N53SV-HDU2-SX108V model? ( i believe the main diff between the HDU3 and HDU2 is that the HDU3 is 1080p yeh?)

Very weird, I'm currently running Diablo 3 on max settings with full resolution and still managing to achieve at least 15 fps (which is the lowest I've allowed it to get to).

Interesting, what model have you got exactly? Does it have the gt540m? There is a whole lot of threads about it on the net, at 15 fps it's fair choppy, i can't get it smooth unless it's on minimum, if i pump it up to medium it gets a few more frames but as soon as a bunch of things attack me it drops straight back down to choppy... Sort of sucks, but I'm only on the trial and it's blizzards bad support which seems to be the trouble so i'll probably just not buy it :p

I have the Asus N53SV-A2, it has a gt540m CUDA 1GB. Make sure you have the latest drivers from NVIDIA (go to their website). Having the latest drivers makes a worldly difference.

I recently bought a pair of Audio Technica mth40 headphones. When i hook them up to the laptop, the sound is so distorted it seems like something is wrong with the headphones but i know its not the headphones since they work fine with everything else. So i decided to uninstall Realtek audio drivers. And that fixed the problem but i was wondering if i should try installing the drivers again.

So, I got a question here guys.
I have got my Asus N53SN for about 6 months now (little less).
The performance is degrading SO hard.
The laptop takes 1 min and 10 seconds to boot into Windows (and this seemed short, usually it takes a lot longer to get onto the desktop, the "Welcome" thingy takes ages). It takes about 2 minutes before I can open my first application.
Anyone else having such bad performance?
I'm really disappointed about this, bad HDD and a fan who is loose (need to send it in for repair)...

    Subbieh,

Is your disk really full? That will cause fragmentation and make the HDD access slow.

You could have a lot of other problems - too many tasks / programs starting up at boot time, some virus or other malware etc.

Finally a bad HDD could also be a problem. Download the disk checking software from the hard disk manufacture to test your disk (or try CrystalDiskInfo).

    That's the weird part.
I have 472 GB free on a 750GB HDD, so more than 50%.
Also, Fragmentation rates are low and there is no malware (it gets scanned alot).
The WD tool shows that the SMART status is Good (pass).
It's a 5400 rpm drive but the performance is so crappy :(

I know that, but the speed it gets slow with is incredible.
I did a clean install when I had the laptop for about a week, and the performance was really crappy too...

    Have you tested the RAM?

I have also seen bad performance caused by a failing DVD drive.

Got my N53SV-SZ960V yesterday and so far it's excellent. Keyboard flex is a minor issue, but it's barely noticeable.

Plan to upgrade with SSD, possibly replace the optical drive with a HDD caddy, and grab some more RAM.

Seen the DVD drive causing trouble on Windows NT and Windows XP. When the DVD drive is faulty it is not recognised properly (or responds incorrectly) and the OS keeps trying to probe it. That's my theory anyway. Disconnecting the DVD drive fixed the system slowdown.

Seen a fair few posts saying they can run BF3 at medium to high settings... I just installed and tried to play and was very disappointed, getting only 6FPS on the lowest settings (didn't change resolution though, so that might be the issue)

Guys, I've got the N53SV. I want to do a clean install of everything to get rid of the bloatwares. My question are as follows:

    1. I want to retain the Express gate and the Restore partition and just get rid of the OS and its bloatwares, How do I make sure I don't delete the Restore partition and the Express gate?

    TIA.

Just picked up a new N53SN-SH71 CBIL.
The HD on this system is a 750 GB 7200 rpm SATA.
When I check the system, it shows the following capacities:
    Primary Partition (25 GB)
OS (c :) 293.03 GB of which 55 GB have been used (I have not personally installed any software of yet)
    D: (380.61 GB)

First Question: When I add this up, I get ~695 GB total... I am missing 55 GB. Any thoughts? Do owners of similar HD experience the same scenario?

    Second Question:
I would like to keep the OS on its own drive (partition), installed software on a separate partition, and files (data) on the third partition. What are your thoughts on this? My reason for trying this is to only have to install the OS if it crashes without having to install all software again as well as to be able to back-up data only.

    Third Question:
If so, what would be a recommended size for the OS system?

    Fourth Question:
When W7 does its updates, can update files from say 1 year ago be deleted?

    Thank you.

For HDD manufactures 1GB is 1000MB. For operating system 1GB is 1024MB.

In real world 1TB drive is about 9XXGB...

Okay, here is the thing... HDD manufacturers use SI prefixes. So, when you see a 750GB HDD it's 750 gigabytes or 750 * 109 bytes. Windows on the other hand reports using IEC binary prefixes. So, when you see a 50GB it's actually are 50 gibibytes or 50 * 230. The problem is it should have been reported to you as 50GiB and not as 50GB, hence the confusion.

750 * 109 / 230 will give you an actual size of about 698 GiB.

To add more confusion, when we talk about the RAM, you'll hear kilo, mega, giga, etc. Those, do not correspond to SI prefexes kilo, mega, giga, etc. Instead they are equivalent to kibi, mebi, gibi, etc. This means they refer to 1024 and not 1000.

Bottom line, when you see kB, KB (has nothing to do with Kelvins ;) ) or KiB, MB or MiB (has nothing to do with the Men in black ;) ), GB or GiB, etc. in a computer perspective they are all the same and use the base 1024 (or base 2 if you will) with only one exception. That is HDD total sizes used by HDD manufacturers, who use base 1000 (base 10 if you will).

When you install a new program it will, in most cases, still put something on OS partition, e.g. some shared library files, registry entries, etc.

    Thank you Nebulus.
The GB unit reference now makes sense.

From your answer to question two, I then take it that it is best to have a partition for the OS AND software. I should then, if partitioning the drive for data files, create two partitions -- lets call them A and B. Partition A would be next to the OS partition, and partition B would be the last partition. That way, if need be, I can increase the OS partition size using partition A which would be 'contiguous'.

As for my last question -- when a drive starts to get full with security updates, etc. from Windows, can one go back and delete older updates? For example, say Windows has installed Service Pack 2, is it necessary to still have Service Pack 1 on the drive?

    Thanks again.

Yeh mate, as i said I've tried a whole heap of driver versions etc... I'm actually surprised you u can run it, from what i've read something like 80% of people have the same problem as me... I think it's probably just in the definition of what "runs well" is that the difference is.

On anything above medium it runs OK until I find mobs, then it drops to about 10 fps (which is visibly choppy). On low it runs fine

    Hello,

this is my first post here, glad to be part of this community.

    I bought a N53SM e72 and also 4+4GB Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9.

I have issues when I used the upgrade, alone or mix with the 2+4 hynyx. Hangs after suspend mode, hibernation BSOD and so on....

My question is, is there an special procedure to install the ram?
should I clear the CMOS? how?

    thanks in advance

To be honest, I don't feel like I'm in a position to argue what is best, as I really don't know.

As for your second question, I could be wrong.... but... my educated guess would be that later updates would depend on the fact that the previous updates are already in place. So, if you install SP2 whenever it comes out without installing SP1 first, it would most likely install the necessary missing files. My guess is that you end up with roughly the same among of files anyway.

I have the same problem. I bought the same mems and the problem lies in incompability.

I've been going through the Internet for a solution, there isn't one. All you can do about it is to modify BIOS. There you can force BIOS to set mem parameters to 1066 MHz instead of 1333 MHz. Kinda helped me, but still getting BSOD sometimes.

Did you go into the nVidia Control Panel and add the GTA4 exe to the panel and also indicate to use high performance for it? Try that. Also, I believe GTA4 is very poorly ported on the PC, so that may have something to do with it. Might just be picking a bad game. The 540 won't run all of the time, as Optimus will make Win 7 use integrated when it's sufficient.

Haven't been here in awhile: Bought the N53SV-XV1 in Aug of 2011, still going strong. Best laptop I've ever owned:

Forgot how many pages back: Anyone have the link to the chicklet style KB? Might want to grab a backup before heading to law school and make it easier to type.

Also, anyone ever get a laptop backpack for this? Would like one that's able to fit this in a compartment + school books.

The way to remove these files is to open "Computer" and then right click on the drive, select properties and choose disk cleanup.

Service Pack backup files is one of the options. On my N53SV these files are 920MB is size.

Hi, I'm having the exact same problem with my N53SV-DH71. Just wondering if you ever found a simple fix. It's pretty frustrating.

    Hello all,

    Short story:
Anyone had issues with their laptop annoyingly switching from AC to battery mode??

    Long story:
I've owned my N53SV-XV1 since June 2011 and this thread was what convinced me to upgrade from my terrible HP dv5z-1000.

I am interested to know if any owners have had to deal with replacing the AC adapter or the DC power jack/DC power board. This past week I've had issues with my laptop switching from AC mode to battery mode. I had to wiggle my power cord a bit, but the issue got worse enough where it's basically impossible to charge the battery or run the laptop on AC power alone.

I decided to order a new adapter on Amazon ( Amazon.com: Asus 19V 6.3A 120W Replacement AC Adapter for Asus Notebook Models: Asus G51Jx-X5, Asus G51Vx, Asus G51Vx-A1, Asus G51Vx-Rx05, Asus G53J, Asus G53Jw, Asus G53Jw-3D, Asus G53Jw-3De, Asus G53Jw-A1, Asus G53Jw-Xa1, Asus G53Jw-Xt1, Asus G60J,. I did check to see if my adapter worked with my father's ASUS k53e-1bsx, which only requires 65W of power. And it worked.

So I'm thinking that it might be the DC power jack/board. I don't have a soldering iron so I might go ahead and just purchase a new DC power board on eBay if the new adapter doesn't help. I disassembled my laptop and looked at the DC power board and it didn't seem broken and was pretty sturdy. Not wiggling. Well soldered. Hmmm...

Any have similar experiences with this issue?

I'll update my issue later once I get my adapter in the mail.
    ------------------------------

Thanks to everyone in this thread for their wealth of information!

I've had my N53 since August 2011. Great laptop, but I've never been comfortable with the location and shape of the power jack. My previous laptop had a jack with a 90 degree bend on the side, and it never felt like I was putting any stress on the power socket. With the N53, however, I just know that the socket or solder will eventually cause problems.

I'm guessing that the problem is with either the socket on the power board, or the solder holding the socket to the board. A bad solder is not that easy to spot with the naked eye, but reheating it may solve the issue.

I was able to find one on eBay but it was a Portuguese one:
    ASUS N53 N61V N60 N61J N61 U50V U50 UL50 Keyboard Teclado Portuguese White Frame | eBay

With some GOogle searching, you can probably find a website that will have a white keyboard in stock. Chances are they will be non-U.S.

I hope to replace mine with a chiclet keyboard once I fix my laptop issues.

Yes, I love my laptop and the replacement adapter I bought, I thought, would be right angled. But I got fooled from the stock photo. However, it does fit more snug than my original.

Unfortunately, it seems to really be the power socket that is the issue. I already went ahead and bought a new DC power circuit board. I don't have a soldering iron as of yet. I'm still a recent college grad in search of a job. I'll be owning one eventually though!

I'll keep my issue updated once I receive my circuit board in the mail.

i have same problem , mine is a N53S, 2GB nvidia, but please, i have tried everything, but nothing into the application that i use.
Yes, my application won´t switch and never find the NVIDIA controller and uses the INTEL always, so it runs out of video memory really fast, and my CPU gets warm, etc.
In my ASUS model i can not do it via BIOS and of course in this order of ideas, i never have seen the NVIDIA GPU 2GB running in the application i buyed ASUS for..
Sure profiles on nvidia control panel doesn´t work either.
WHAT CAN I DO TO DEACTIVE ONCE FOR ALL THE INTEL HD GPU AND USE ONLY NVIDIA GPU? THANKS
