Platter HDD, stock for N53SN, 640gb 5400rpm. Do not believe hard drive is faulty, no usual signs. Seems like CPU freezes up, however I can still move my mouse and I can play videos at same time, or do other things on the laptop (without lag at all, mind you). Its almost like when you lower processor power to save energy and the screen has a slight lag if say, your typing, the curser doesn't move (although you can move mouse) and the text doesn't appear for a few seconds, then it all catches up after a few seconds. During this time however, I cannot do anything in the browsers, if I do it takes a few seconds to catch up, and it happens constantly after a while, very annoying. As i've said only seems to happen in web browser (verified in chrome and I.E. as of now)

Hm, so is this only happening when you get out of a game, or is this happening any additional times as well?

I haven't experienced this whatsoever. I've played games, such as Sonic Generations or NBA2K12 for awhile, exited, and gone immediately to browser/video/whatever. Is there a heating issue? Maybe download a temperature monitoring program and leave it running in the background to check temps upon exiting a game. Might be a heating issue, causing the processor to lock up for 30 seconds or so until it cools. Let's try and get more info.

Set up some temp monitors, I'll be sure to post if I catch anything out of the ordinary. I appreciate the help, this issue has been bothering me for awhile and I can't seem to figure it out.

As a side note, I did have a BSOD the other day, which happens on occasion. This seemed to happen right around when my computer started lagging, was writing in microsoft word, computer started stuttering (by this I mean the lag issue, typing but text not showing up for ~5 sec, then it all appears, rinse and repeat) and eventually BSOD. Screen said Driver Power State Failure, and after restart this was what windows brought up under details of the problem...

    Code:
    Problem signature:
      Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen
      OS Version:	6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
      Locale ID:	1033

    Additional information about the problem:
      BCCode:	9f
      BCP1:	0000000000000003
      BCP2:	FFFFFA8007AC7A20
      BCP3:	FFFFF80000B9C4D8
      BCP4:	FFFFFA80071999A0
      OS Version:	6_1_7600
      Service Pack:	0_0
      Product:	768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
      C:\Windows\Minidump\111911-80168-01.dmp
      C:\Windows\Temp\WER-118295-0.sysdata.xml

Would be willing to upload files if it would help. Any ideas here?

Actually now that I think about it, i'll probably hit defrag/disk cleanup later and see if that doesn't take care of it, though I don't know why I would need one when I've only had the laptop a few months at most. I'm sure a fresh install of windows might help as well, unfortunately I need to get my hands on a copy first. Let you know how it goes.

A random BSOD such as that might be caused by faulty RAM. Consider running memtest86. If you are unable to do this, pull one stick out and use your machine. If it continues to act up, swap the sticks. If it stabilizes, you know where the problem is.

Yeah, BSOD is usually a RAM issue in this case. I'm starting to think it's a HDD issue. Might have gotten a lemon or it just went. Platter HDD's, never know when they'll go lol. I've had tons die within 2 months brand new

No, still an uncommon thing as far as I'm aware. Same thing with VGA on laptops. Output, but not input. They're out there, but still not common.

    Hi!
    I just ordered my N53SN with i7 2670qm, 6gb ram, GF550 and 500gb HDD.
I don't know if it has glossy or non-glossy display on it? They don't tell it on product site at asus.com and the shop didn't tell it either.
Something I'd like to know, too, is how well that laptop is going to run games?
Mostly I play CS:S and when Valve is ready with CS:Go, I'm going to buy it.
I have had a little break with computers, especially laptops, so I don't know much about their capability when it comes to gaming.

The i7 tells me I'm not getting bored with CPU based processing - am I right? I've been using Q9550 a couple of years and it has completed everything I have wanted it to do. How much faster or slower the i7 mobile processors are compared to C2Q?

Well, a little offtopic, but everything I'd like you to tell is - how much that hardware can do for my entertainment, some kind of FPS tests or server hosting with source-based games would be nice.

I run everything new with the GT 540, no problems in medium or so, depending on the game. The i7 is insanely fast. I mean, if you're looking to max out games, then a laptop won't cut it anyway, unless you go custom built $1500+. Still, a desktop would be more cost friendly and powerful in that regards. But for a laptop, it games nicely, the screen is great, and the build quality is very good.

Is the screen glossy? In Finland there are sold some N53 series laptops with glossy and some models with non-glossy...

And I must add that with laptop expectations are of course a bit lower compared to desktops. It's not realistic to compare the newest desktop parts with laptop hardware.

    And here's the model I've ordered : http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/prod...53SN-15-6-FHD-i7-2670QM-GT550M-6GB-500G-7HP64

Another shop is selling the N53SN with the same specs and there it is said the laptop has non-glossy display, so is there a risk of having a glossy one?

Mine is glossy yes, I have the N53SV-XV1. Wouldn't know about your specific model, even after google searching it. I'm used to glossy screens, as every screen has been glossy throughout my life, save for flat panel LCD monitors, but those have only been out a handful of years anyway lol.

Yeah, both are working fine, so it doesn't matter at all. I'll tell which it is. Just waiting for delivery, the shop says 2-4 weeks.

About the i5 and i7, are they getting hot? Bought "cooling pad for laptop" some days ago so it'll help a bit. Quad core is just questionable a little... If it is clocked to 3.1GHz and is running inside a laptop? If I'm asked - it might cause some heat, maybe 70+ celsius degrees?

Cooling pads for N53 are useless, they have no bottom air intake, only from below the keyboard. The notebook stays cool on laps. CPU temps are higher than GPU temps :)

A 0x9f error is a faulty driver related to a power state failure (standby/hibernate). Load the minidump into windows debugger, or upload it. It typically happens 600 s after a standby or resume event.

I love this laptop! It is worth maxing out the RAM..or at least putting in 12GB given that ram is so cheap! The laptop is surprisingly light too, although it is slightly on the large side. The screen is excellent (I think mine is the FHD matte one) and it is f&*^&g bright! I often have it on the lowest brightness. It's great for gaming, I've played portal 2 on max settings and it was really smooth. Stock wifi works great, not sure why people had problems. My only problem is the elantech touchpad drivers suck! Why don't they have edge scroll? I tried so many of the elantach touchpad driver versions and many had problems, some made your keyboard lag, some made your mouse freeze for like a second when you minimize windows or change though windows using (alt + tab). I finally found one that somewhat worked. The Nvidia optimus works great too (blue light when its off and white light when using the nvidia card) and you can easily add programs to use the dedicated nvidia card if you wish (i do this for video editing software which speeds things up, but most games do it automatically). The keyboard is also really good, just gets some getting used to as the layout is a bit different. One thing that pissed me off is that I have just got this laptop and already a few keys are wearing out and loosing colour (especially the left ctrl key)!?? I don't even type that much :/

Which elantech touchpad driver do YOU use, and what hangups do you have 'bout it?
So you maxed out the ram to 32GB or 16GB?

I've installed 32 GB of RAM to N53SV and it's working just fine under any load. Dont say that it's expensive ($1000; Macsales; 4 x 8 GB) - You never tried it.

    My config:

N53SV Rev B9 (keyboard flex. fixed since B6)
    Screen: 1366x768 HD
    RAM: 32 GB (4 x 1333MHz DDR3 SO-DIMM PC10600 204 Pin)
    HDD: OCZ Vertex 3 240 GB (SATA III) - 550 mb/s read & 500 mb/s write
    Modded BIOS (AES-NI)

Uninstall it. It's much better without made-in-china movement algo.

    Windows EI benchmark:

    CPU 7.5
    MEM 7.6
    GPU 5.9
    GAME GPU 6.6
    HDD 7.7

I've purchased FHD Samsung matte screen, it's working but in interlaced mode (no luck, dont forget - i have 1366x768 HD screen). I dont know if 204 BIOS can fix this or not.

Final: ASUS really made a model with huge potential.

It looks like Asus has updated the N53 line with Intel's latest CPUs. One Amazon user who reviewed the Core i5 version said the FHD screen is matte. Can anyone confirm this? Here's a link to the i7 model:

I have a strange problem. I have built in the Intel 6300 wifi adapter. But since then my laptop makes a strange high sounding noise when using the wifi functionality. The faster the speed the loader the sound is. It happens while using both 2.4ghz or 5ghz band.

I am not 100% sure but it looks like the sound comes from the upper left corner of the laptop.

    Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Correct. But I have read that the 6300 works good and it is not a problem when u don't use the 3th antenna. When I bought the 6300 is had the same price as the 6200, so I bought the 6300. And if I might change laptop in future then I already have a 3 antenna adapter.

Ok... I prefered the 6230 with BT :)
Anyway the high noise might be due to some rezonating element in your notebook under heavy WiFi waves load. Upper left corner == over the screen or over the keyboard? :)

I thought about the 6230 too but I went for a model without bluetooth to prevent high DPC load while using high speeds.. (The default adapter has this, and I have seen this 'problem' also in other laptops with wifi and bluetooth combined).

Ontopic: I mean the left upper corner over the keyboard, not the screen.

Only the speaker there comes to my mind at the moment. I have no issues whatsoever with WiFi+BT on my 6230. WiFi naturally only slows down when I'm using my BT mouse+keyboard :)

Really nice to see people are starting to really appreciate this laptop. Up to 32Gb, full hd (optionally), nice sound.

Main downsides are camera. The touchpad will be OK, I guess, with better drivers. Battery life could be a bit longer too, I guess.

This is your uber-multitasking system. Only two screens though.

It looks like it is the speaker where the noise is.
I have noticed the following things:
The noise is 100% related to wifi traffic and it speed.
If the computer doesn't play music / normal sounds for a while, the weird noise stops, even while using wifi.
If the PC makes a sound, the weird noise comes back again for a while, while using the wifi adapter.
Muting the speaker/soundcard does NOT work.

    Strange, isn't it?

I hope this can be fixed!

Hi - I just bought a N53SN and I love it. I also bought 4x4GB Corsair memory from Amazon. However, I can't figure out how to open the disk/memory panel? are there screws under the rubber feet?

    Help would be appreciated.

I have had that since I first got my laptop and RMA'd it many many times. The technicians will say there's nothing wrong because they can't hear it.
After 1 year, they are finally offering me a replacement but it's a refurbished A1 instead of the XE1 I bought so I haven't accepted yet.

Maybe you can try getting an exchange/refund. The noise is really effed up.

Great pics, last I heard your new FHD screen didn't work, did you ever determine why?
The one you are waiting for is it the same or one from Asus?

how much do you have to dismantle it to get to the wifi card/chip? all the carcass? i'm considering ordering it, but dunno if i have the ability to change it...

Already changed the keyboard, more ram and optical drive to hd caddy...

One more thing, where did you bought the backlit keyboard?
I've found only one in ebay with N53 in the title and it costs US$330 O.O
Though there are some cheap ones with the exact same layout, would they work? links below

    Hello @ all!

I am trying to play Battlefield 3 with my Asus N53SN. It works really good but the games stops working every 10 to 15 minutes.

OK, waht can I do: I saw that the current Nvidia driver from Asus aren't the newest ones, so I decided to get newest ones from Nvidia. I tried that but now I have problems as this guy wrote:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...sandybridge-owner-thread-116.html#post7944217

-> "but when i go to control panel and click on nvidia control panel, i get a message "nvidia display settings are not available"

It seems that I can't run original Nvidia driver. Is that correct? It seems that the notebook is not any more able to switch between the GPUs...

    However:

Who can play Battlefield on a N53SN w/o problems?
What Nvidia driver do you have installed? Asus or directly from Nvidia?

Would be very glad to get some help...

    TIA

    EDIT:

When I want to download the driver from nvidia.de I see the notice (translated): "Notebooks with Hybrid Power Technologie with Intel Chipsätzen are not supported by this Driverversion."

On geforce.com I can't find any information like that.

Both are same Version but german one with 191 MB and US one with 150 MB.

That Hybrid Power Technologie ist Optimus? Hybrid Power Technologie is what we have inside our notebook, correct?
