Wow, certainly not cheap, did that 65 cover shipping or was it seperate?

Hi
I have N53 Sn-i7-dos
I tried to install win xp on it,
but it goes to blue screen dead before starting the installation process!
As I know, it is related to bios setting-sata configuration
But I can't find where to change it to AHCI mode that is required for Xp.
Do I need to upgrade my bios firmware? if yes,how can I upgrade the bios?(I downloaded the 208 version-but don't know how to upgrade the bios if it is the solution ! )
Please guide me through this problem.
tnx -
Install Windows 7, not windows XP.

N53SN *DEAD*!!!
So I've had an N53SN since july, and it's been working great with no strange behavior. It had some "power leaking" and shocked me a few times in the beginning, but not since then. The builtin B&O speakers were kindof "crunchy" and "boomy" when playing bassy sounds, but that is all. (okay the trackpad and its utility is useless, and the keyboard terrible for writing on, but no game-breaker.)
But today, when i turn it on: no reaction. I had left it off, but charging from about 10% overnight. There's no light or sound or any sign of life *at all* from the thing! The power supply looks normal, and I tried removing the power and battery for 5 mins. then plugging in battery and power. I also tried power with no battery. I tried it all (I think).
Anybody seen this happen, and know what to do?
As strange as it seems, after less than 3 months use, I say the thing is bricked and it should go back to the shop. Dammit. My first ASUS, and now probably my last -
i have a problem with nvidia optimus, i need to add application to run on dedicated card (gf 550m), but when i go to control panel and click on nvidia control panel, i get a message "nvidia display settings are not available"
i've installed newest drivers, but that didnt help
any ideas? google seems to be out of answers for this one... -
upgrading the bios didn't solve the problem too!
anyone knows how to solve this sata configuration problem(AHCI)? -
about 6gb - haven't tried but hwinfo says it does...
@bartendersimon
you can't add backlight without connecting it to another power source. usb is an option - but risky...
@Don Carnage
have you done a bios update just before? -
-
No lights, no sound, with or without plug/battery. Last night the computer was running happily and charghing its battery. While watching a youtube movie, I went to sleep mode, as did the computer. I don't remember shutting it down though, so it probably did sleep with the plug in, and maybe still charging.
It makes no sense for it to die after 3 months of less than intense use.
Is there a record of this error occuring with the N53, with the symptoms I described? -

Just bought this laptop, I was just wondering how hard is it to upgrade the graphics card (gt 540m is kind of weak). 1 meaning totally easy and 10 being impossible. For example if I was to buy a gt 560m somewhere down the road and manually install it into my asus n53sv-a2.
Thanks -
an update to my freezing problem (page 109). I've applied the new Crucial (512GB SSD) firmware (009) and also disabled the LPM as suggested by some writers on this thread. The problem (wake up from hibernation then freezes a few minutes later) still remains.
I have thus turned off hibernation and only allowed sleep. It has been quite well for over two days now (I always just close the lid when I go to sleep). So may be it's a problem on hibernation/wake up rather than anything else. Has anybody experienced the same? -
Just got my N53S delivered from US to Australia.
Sorry if this has been covered before but I got up to page 25 and stopped ... I am going to do a complete format and install Windows 7 Ultimate.
1) But before I do, it has asked me to make backup CDs or something. Do I have to do this?? I have the driver CD that came with it.
Cheers -
About upgrading VGA chip:
It's soldered on to the motherboard, there are two ways to do:
1. Unsolderd the BGA package (needs a BGA unsolder equipment that costs only 20-30k USD, then you add solder paste to each one of the 400+ balls and then you buy the same package new NVIDIA chip (that is pin-to-pin compatible) and then add massive heat to put on the chip. Even in notebook factories this procedure is only 25% successful since removal of BGA usually destroy the board, any reinsert of a BGA is also highly likely to go wrong.
If you however succeed, then you need to beg ASUS for a BIOS upgrade for your new VGA chip. It's very unlikely they will do that unless you bribe the BIOS engineer USD5000-10000.
2. The cheapest possiblity is to buy a new notebook
Notebooks are very unflexible on upgrades. ASUS used to have one notebook with upgradable VGA board, but only one version of VGA was available... later they scrapped this idea due to too many problems.
Usually HDD, CD, RAM and CPU are upgradable, but each notebook is different and in many cases only RAM is upgradable.
Free after Lyngemark
You can try to bga-solder a GT550M, and pre-flash it with N53SN bios
All risks are your own.

It looks like the A93SV almost has the same specs as the N53SN
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS A93SV
Mediamarkt claims it has USB3, which is not mentioned by asus above.
Asus A93SV-YZ128V Notebook als Booaaah-Angebot bei Media Markt » markensysteme.de
Otherwise 4 sodimm, GT540, etc seem to be the same.
Of course the chassis and screen, hdd, optical drive are different, but the core could even be the same. -

Can someone tell me if I need to make these damn recovery DVDs before I format and reinstall Windows Ultimate?
If I have my retail Windows 7 already, and I got the driver CD (plus Asus online), do I need to make these DVDs??
All I can think of is in the case of selling it (if I ever!) it would be handy to have a copy of the Windows Home installed on it to reinstall for the new owner. -
Heya!
I'm a new owner of a N53SV-XE1, and was hoping someone could answer a few of my questions.
Don't worry, I'm reading through all the 100+ pages, too. Well, skimming, really, but yeah.
Anywho:
1) I hate the keyboard that came with the laptop. I'm no touch-typist, mind you, though I'm happy with my speed, but my accuracy has shot down to hell since I got the laptop. Seems like all of a sudden I'm hitting a neighbouring key way too frequently. (I just spelled "freqkuently" in the last sentence, for example.) Now I'm hesitant whenever I type, and look down at the keyboard way too much. I intend to replace it with the often suggested chiclet keyboard. To those who've made the switch, could you please share your reaction? Pros/cons of the chiclet, etc.
2) Will replacing the keyboard void my warranty?
3) I had recovery discs made at the time I purchased the laptop. A clean install would make things run/load faster, right? Is it possible while installing Windows 7 to select/deselect the software/bloatware I want, or will the recovery just re-install everything as it was when I first got the laptop?
4) Also thinking of getting a 120 GB SSD. I read somewhere it depends on what kinda SATA you have. If so, how can I check my N53SV-XE1 for what version I have? Also, what're the best/solid brands when it comes to SSD? Corsair is a name that comes up. Last, what are the pros (besides faster boot-up times) cons of a SSD?
I'll probably have more questions, but any help you guys can offer is much appreciated!
(Seriously though, this keyboard is killing me. I don't know if it's too unresponsive, soft, or jammed together, but this post was riddled with spelling errors. Need to get on eBay, and fast.) -
I have the original keyboard on, and I've gotten used to it. I may go with the chiclet though, but from what I've seen, it's a quick install. Pop out old, attach ribbon cable, snap new in.
2) It shouldn't, as the keyboard is literally ontop. I haven't seen any warranty stickers under the keyboard, they're probably under the next layer.
3) Clean install would get rid of some Asus bloatware, but you can probably just remove it yourself right now. PCDecrapifier is recommended by some, but I just use Revo Uninstaller and take out things I don't use. If you're unsure, load the program, and you can tell if you'll ever use it lol.
4) SATA II in these laptops. I'm not aware of any SATA III laptops that aren't really higher end models anyway. SATA II is plenty fast though. I have a Crucial C300 128GB SSD and it's blazing fast. Crucial has a high reputation (better than Intel's, go check the SSD forum here, people listed all of the Newegg reviews for Crucial, Intel, Corsair, etc etc).
Other pros include better reliability, as there are no moving parts. Most SSD's on average of writing 20GB a day or so (consumer use on the high end lol) have 15 year lifespans. I'm lucky to get 4 years out of a spinning HDD before it gurgles and I get data read errors. Programs load instantly. I went with it for speed and the reliability. IF your SSD has reached the end of its life, you can still get your data from it. You can read, just not write to it. So you can read your data from it and replace. If you have a spinning HDD that's skipping or won't spin, you're screwed either way.
Cons? Price for the storage space, that's really it. I find it a good investment. -
Thanks for reassuring me about the keyboard. Wish I could get used to the old one, but that's life. Anywho, chiclet seems fun.
I'll probably do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium (x64), partly because I want to at least try doing a clean install, and partly because the techie from the store I bought the laptop made a mistake with my name and locked the folder, for some bizarre reason. (I'll keep those programs in mind though; much thanks.)
You're right about Crucial. I'll most likely go with a Crucial (CT128M4SSD2) 128GB SSD M4 2.5" SATA 3 6Gb/s Solid State Drive. It's SATA 3, but backwards compatible with my SATA 2, right?
I'll also get two sticks of 4 GB RAM, Crucial Rendition (RM51264BA1339) 4GB PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 240-Pin DIMM.
More questions!
1) So, this laptop is larger than a normal 15.6" sleeve, right? Any recommendations as to the right sized sleeve?
2) Seems as if my normal DVDs, YouTube vids, and AVIs are of lower quality. Trying to watch them in full screen is not fun. Is this because the monitor quality of the N53SV is...better than my old laptop`s? (Excuse my newbish-ness.) If so, does that mean I can only download/purchase HD DVDs if I want good quality, or is there a way to watch standard DVDs in all their regular, non-pixellated, full-screen glory?
Much thanks in advance. -

hi,
I want to give my n53sv-sx515 a new keyboard, to be accurate, a backlight keyboard. I was looking at some sites and found this. There are some tutorials already available like this one. This is extremely useful as this laptop doesn't have any circuitry to withdraw power for the led. Also honorable mention. -
Anyone know how to fix the issue of the webcam being choppy? I tried going to Asus's driver website, but I'm not sure which webcam driver to install...
-
1) Yeah it's a tiny bit bulkier.
Amazon.com: Cosmos Black Neoprene/Cotton 17" 17.3" inch Laptop notebook computer case/bag/sleeve for Dell HP Acer Asus Sony IBM samsung LG Toshiba+ Cosmos cable tie: Electronics
I ended up just getting that. It's a tad bigger than the laptop, but that's good enough for me. I must've returned 2-3 15.6" sleeves for not being big enough, despite their dimensions being bigger than the body of this beast lol.
2) I'm guessing you have the 1920x1080 screen? There should be something to upscale dvd's in either Windows Media player, or if not, try VLC. But it won't look as good as natively hi-res movies (Blu Ray, downloaded 720 or 1080P videos).

I installed the new Nvidia Drivers 280.26 (verde) and my windows aero effects got real laggy and slow. Anyone else get these issues?
-
280.26-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql
No problem with it, for me I deleted the all drivers and re-install .. but only problem I got is control panel -
how did you delete the old drivers? I see there's an option for "clean" install using the new driver setup package. But the old drivers aren't in say Programs etc.
-
how do i set the aspect ratio for games? DX11 games like battlefield 3 gives me an unstretched 720p resolution on a 1080p scale, resulting in a tiny screen on a black background. The intel desktop options are garbage and dont apply to games at all.
-
From the Device Manager, Unistall
-
Did you have the new intel drivers installed as well, because thats where the problem came from. Version 8.15.10.2509
-
what version would you suggest me to install? the asus one?
-
Also, I'm not sure but my WEI may have gone down. My desktop performance for windows aero rating is now 5.9. Is that true for you too?

Hey guys, I'm new to this site, but I was told to come here for good advice regarding laptops.I'm planning on buying an ASUS N53SV-XV1 very soon off of Amazon. And from what I've heard, most of the ASUS machines come with lots of bloatware on them. I'm just wondering if there is a package or perhaps a guide that tells you what programs are necessary to get the full experience out of the machine without dealing with all the the unwanted programs it comes with. I don't really do anything crazy with my laptops. I do some gaming and mainly use it for work and entertainment. Once I have it, I would like to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and simply add the needed drivers and programs. Have any of you done this before? I would really appreciate any help or tips you can give me. Thanks a lot fellas!

Just got my Asus N53SV-A2. The laptop is a beast in almost everything. just ran TF2 and Civ5 maxed out for both games with 40+ frames per second. Blu ray movies are beautiful, screen and keyboard work amazingly. I might even make a detailed review for people that are on the fence about this laptop over the weekend
-
I re-installed Windows Home Premium (if you're going Ultimate, you'll need your own license, or other method, wink wink) and actually popped in the Asus cd that came with it. Installed drivers and removed a few programs I installed accidentally. Off I went. No problems -
What is the difference between the N53SV and N53SN? The SN is for sale at the local store...
To my knowledge the only difference is that the SN has one USB3 port and 2GB of dedicated videoram.
Thanks.
Phil -
the SN has a gt550 with 2g ddr3 VRAM
that is a about it, I have a N53SN and it is a great laptop.
