I've been reading through this thread but haven't come across this question yet: When gaming or pushing the machine, how is the fan noise? And when doing regular tasks such as word processing is the fan quiet?

I've come across some good deals on the SV & SN models and am considering the purchase, but noise factor is something that will affect my decision.

    Thanks in advance

    Relatively quiet.

Regular tasks: I don't notice the fan noise at all.
Heavy load: You'll notice the noise, but still nothing irritating. HP dv7 for example, is way more loud.

You might want to check out these reviews as they have measured loudness:

    Please check the quote :(?

And does it need extra Fan ? I got some kind of glass cooler got 2 fans, is it needed , I mean does it heat much?

And I read about the keyboard, it said its made like this for the Comfy and Longer life..

No problem mate. Glad I helped. :)

In regular tasks you won´t hear or notice the fan, when gaming well you´ll hear it but it won´t bother you.

Well in previous posts I stated MY notebook runs a bit "hot" so I do have an external cooler, it has 3 8mm fans but I allready ordered this one Thermaltakeusa»Cooler»Notebook Cooler»Massive23 ST : Massive23 ST CLN0009, its a beauty.

To everyone I love the keyboard. :p

USB 3 is backward compatible, so you'll be able to use 2.0 devices, though there should not be any speed changes comparing to USB 2 port.

Boot time will obviously vary depending upon what you load at start-up. It doesn't bother me a bit; turn the laptop on, type in the password, go get a cup of coffee :). But I think someone measured it to 75 seconds or so and brought it down to 40, I'm not sure though.

Can't say that it heats much, but extra cooling never hurts. I've got one of those babies.

No clue what security webcam means. Just uninstall what you don't want. Runs cool normally, gaming on high it runs warm, but that's any computer. The SN in America is an i5, that's why I said that. Guess international gets best of both worlds.

My boot time is about 7 seconds, but I have an SSD :)

It is a small slider that covers the camera.

My unit runs cool, even when pushing the processor with rendering, or using all the cuda cores for iRay rendering. Not too noisy either. At idle it is quiet.

The keyboard is very, very cheap. It buzzes when you type. Low quality.

If nvidia get some working graphics drivers I'll replace it with a chiclet one.

So what did I read xD lol... can you make the processor boost like to max by settings ? or it auto by it self?

And is there a way to get SSD with SATA? Like SSD for windows files only to boot up fast , and SATA for games and other?

Optimus works fine for me. Then again, I didn't upgrade anything from nVidia. All I did was update to the latest drivers from Asus. Everything works fine for me. nVidia isn't doing anything right at the moment. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Turbo boost boosts itself. I have an SSD in mine. I might try my old HDD caddy if I feel like it. Pretty lazy right now, so just using the 500GB it came with off of USB

Temps after about 2.5 hours of 100% CPU load are in the range of 73-78 C. Room temperature was about 22 C.

    @Killerftw

According to what Asus Support guy told me, nope it´s damn fine especially if you consider that after 1 hour of full load I get 95°-96° C. So I envy those temps LOL.

Windows updates and update drivers if you have troubles. If you're going to flash new BIOS, don't use WinFlash. EZFlash would be a better choice. There were some reports of people bricking the chip while flashing with EZFlash and NTFS drive, so don't flash from NTFS drive, use FAT/32 formatted flash drive instead.

When you say full load, do you mean CPU and GPU at max? Or were you just running something like Prime95?

I've got Zalman for my old laptop, because HDD temps were about 55 C and temps dropped by 6 C with cooler. CPU dropped by 9 C idle and 3 C load. But since it seems the N53 fan's air intake is on top (underneath the keyboard?), I don't know how much Zalman really helps with this laptop. I haven't tortured it without the cooler yet.

No I mean just CPU load with Prime95 or Orthos. When I game CPU stays 87°-93°C (which I think is hot) and GPU does 80°-85°C but I´m on about 26°C room temperature. So hopefully the Thermaltake cooler will drop temps even more than the one I have now.

I´m also thinking about the possibility of the fan intake being somewhere near the keyboard. But I´m not sure. Maybe I take out one of my desktop 14cm fans and run some tests.

Yazzinit, just as nebulus said it´s important that you keep your OS up to date and if possible do a weekly security copy on an external HDD.

I use DriverEasy to know if I have ALL of my drivers running and up to date. Don´t know if that´s what you mean.

It scans your hardware completely and let´s you know if you´re missing any driver or if there´s a new version.

I'm not sure what's happening, but every once in a while upon startup my system goes into Express Gate Cloud rather than Windows.

I checked the BIOS to see if I could disable this "feature", but I can't find any related setting.

    Any ideas?

Well, just checked the manual and was able to answer my own question. Looks like the Left button at the top is used for starting Express Gate, while the Right button at the top is used for loading your OS.

Thanks for the info. As long as it isn't irritating, I don't mind a little fan noise during gaming. I actually found a pretty good deal (sub $800 taxes in) on the N53SN-XV1 and picked one up.

I'll post my findings when it arrives.

I posted the flex fix before. Simply release the 5 top tabs and lift the KB up and towards you about 45 degrees and put a slight curve (a smile ) about 3/8th's of an inch and replace the KB, push back down to relock the 5 tabs! Flex gone...

A very SLIGHT curve, if you looked at it from the side you would hardly see that it curved!!!

See attached file this is the shape I curved my keyboard to prevent it from flexing

Well, I got my laptop today! The FHD screen is amazing (compared my previous A8Js). I've installed Firefox, Thunderbird, AVG Free, AdAware Free, and CCleaner.

I've uninstalled the BING toolbar (thanks for comin' out, Microsoft) and one or two of the other bloatware programs - I thought I was going to have to do a clean install, but I like that you can actually uninstall the stuff!

I think I also have to say that people who are worried about the keyboard flex thing are being really nitpicky. I can see why you'd maybe be concerned if you type aggressively (this coming from a 'spirited typist' with big hands), but it shouldn't be a make-or-break thing.

Not to totally discount anything I just said, but I also got a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (Logitech MK550) - so I could do things like have my laptop connected via HDMI to my TV, and sit on my couch to surf the internet.

Oh, and having had the laptop on for a few hours now, the DVD drive was louder burning the recovery disks than the fan(s) have been. All around, this is an awesome laptop - though admittedly, I've owned it juuust shy of 12 hours :).

Are there any specific programs etc I should download & install (or get rid of) before I start filling it up with stuff from my old A8Js?

Thanks for all the info this thread has provided, both in general and to help me make my decision! :)

Killerftw - don't worry about the little stuff - once its in your hands, you'll be happy :p

    yo guys (poss girls)

i have bought a new asus n53sn-2gg-sxo12v, and i know i should have gone with the full hd screen :( , (previous laptop= sony vaio AR21S lasted over 5 years till pushed it and gpu died after using game booster!)

thinking of first upgrades for this laptop already (liking crysis 2 on high (lowest setting is high lol) not needing extreme or would have spent $3000 on one!

1: is there much difference with upgrading ram (already 4gig 1333mhz)
will 8gb improve much or is it pointless because my max resolution isnt 1080p

2:looked on ebay and full hd screen is $145+postage but states my resolution has to be the same as one being replaced, cant i just change my screen over for full hd one or is that a stupid question and i should just buy a awesome monitor?

3: solid state drive, hmm would have been an easy one if i had two bays, what are people doing with the blu-ray burner after inst ssd (putting it into a external bay?) does it make a big difference in games or just for booting?

    4: impossible to upgrade i5 too i7

5: wanted the 2gb gt 550m whiched scored better on notebook check!

any advice on first upgrade which would increase performance would be great esp on monitor problem, really want that full hd :D

    cheers.

For those wanting to toss in a 2nd hd in the optical bay, I purchased this one on ebay and installed it last night. Works perfectly! In the beginning of this thread, there were 2 other options listed but mine was DOA. So, with all cheap little parts, YMMV.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

This laptop freaking rocks. I bought 8gigs of Corsair when I first got the laptop and soon after, I saw a deal for another 8gigs of Corsair for almost half of what I paid so I got more. Now I'm running 16gigs which I'll probably never use but hell, it was cheap so whatever. I could be imagining things but I thought I felt a little more speed.

I love how cool this laptop runs and I highly recommend putting in an SSD if you're able to. It really makes this machine fly!

Optimus works as dynamic switching. You can't have the GeForce on all the time in Windows, as far as I know and understand. No real need to anyway, as Sandy Bridge Intel does just fine with web browsing and such.

Does anyone have a good sleeve for this? I just ordered: Amazon.com: Case Logic PLS-15 15.4-16 Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black): Computers & Accessories

Doesn't fit. Dimensions in length, width, and height all show the case being larger, yet it's tight as hell and not a good fit at all. Either Amazon or Case Logic screwed up. Can anyone recommend a good neoprene sleeve? I don't need/want a big case, just a sleeve is fine

I just picked up an ASUS factory refurbished N53SN-XR2 at a great price through ebay. My previous laptop is a Gateway p7805u that has a 17" screen and 1920x1200 display so the screen is a step back. It's clarity is very good but a FHD 1920x1080 screen would be nice. Is it possible to upgrade the screen to a FHD 1920x1080 screen like the one used in the N53SV-XV1?

Windows rating is highly inaccurate and not really worth the time.

Can You Run It automatically switches to nVidia for me when testing. I haven't touched the control panel at all for it.

    Hi all, first post here.
    My Asus N53S arrived yesterday
i7, 4Gb ram, GT 550M, Full HD screen.
amazing machine, runs so quiet, screen it stunning.
Only problem i have is with the graphics, only getting 4.8 in windows experience? is that normal? i was expecting more?
    Gaming graphics section gets 6.7

    Cheers,
