    Hey Texanman, do you still have the Asus N50's service guide? If so, could you send me a copy of it?

    Ok I have taken my keyboard out of the computer. In order to have the G51's backlit keyboard working, we need two connectors: A wide gray data ribbon cable, and a thin yellow one to power the lights.

    [IMG]

    Our keyboards have the wide gray cable, but no yellow one.

    Could you tell me man-walking-talking-banana-witch-shoots-ak-74u submachine gun, if zallman 2000 could even greatly improve the OC capabilities of N50 ? I had not made any OC steps yet as for now, but I intend to do some OC since our N50's handle the temps very very well already - I get 4600 pts in 3dmark06 and I would like to reach even 6000 if possible ( and safe for the GPU )

    For the GPU, it would make a great deal of difference. The GPU's memory doesn't like to be overclocked much higher than around 510MHz, but I've gotten it to 525MHz before, so that wouldn't be able to go too much higher. The GPU core, though, should definitely be able to go higher. The reason my overclock tops out at 735MHz is because the GPU becomes too hot for my liking: Nearly 75 degrees Celsius. The notebook cooler should be able to help cool it down even more, so therefore, you should be able to go a bit higher.

    The CPU is hard to overclock. The easy way to overclock the CPU, using FSB raising programs such as setFSB and ClockGen don't work for our N50's. You might be able to overclock it by pin-modding the CPU. I wouldn't do this though. Too risky.

    Yea I don't want to mess with the CPU - it is good as it is already, T5800 deals nicely with new games, I just want to get a little bit more from the GPU because there is a potencial there, and as I said our N50's have really good cooling comapred to other lappy's
    Thx for the info !

    Would it be an option to upload the service guide somewhere so that we can add it to the Info Booth?

    Technically only authorized dealers/repair centers are supposed to have the service guide so that would be a little risky on my part if it so happens that the same part of the manual they gave me ends up on the web.....

    Yeah this thing goes REALLY in depth about taking the laptop apart. It would be dangerous if someone who is technologically impaired got ahold of it.

    I am currently dualbooting 32-bit Ubuntu & 32-bit Windows XP. I use XP for gaming and Ubuntu for everything else. Everything works well, all drivers etc can be found from the Asus website. I dont know why your computer locked up, as mine works well. :) Maybe you should try installing it again?

    Hey has anyone tried using HDMI to connect to an HDTV? I tried this yesterday with my parents' 720P HDTV. It looked awesome on the TV. I booted up Call of duty 4, and the sound started to play from the TV's speakers!! :eek:

    Yeah I was definitely pleasantly surprised at that.

    In that case, please hold on to the guide and don't post it online. I understand your doubts.

    (I don't think anyone at ASUS would pursue this though. But better safe than sorry.)

    When I am @home I usually use my 24'' Samsung HD Monitor which supports 1080p. Its nice for watching movies etc. :) HDMI indeed transfers also sound, but in my case thats not so cool as the speakers mounted to the screen suck. I feel like 15.4'' is a perfect screen size for me; it makes the laptop easier to carry, and when I am at home I can use my bigger display.

    Btw, you can use the external monitor as dual-view on your laptop; the laptops screen works as monitor #1 and the external one as #2. It gives you more working space. :)

    Ok, this is my first post so I'm a noob for this forum. :cool:

    [IMG]

    I have just bought an ASUS N50VC FP163C on the recommendation of this thread BUT i can't get the BlueTooth to switch on!

    Tried everything but alas nothing...

    ...someone then suggested that perhaps the internals are not there and I may in fact have everything except the actual BlueTooth hardware?

    So Texanman and avanish11, I need the service and disassembly guide/manual so that I can have a sneak peak and make that decision of what to do if I find that the slot is empty.

    I would like to do it right and not wreck the thing stumbling around without the manual!

    ...can you please email it to me?

    Won't you void your warranty if you open it up?

    There must be a way, software wise, that will tell you if you have the Bluetooth installed, isn't there people?

    It will mention in the manual (included) if your meant to have 3G and or BT. It should also mention on the Box if it's included as with your model BT was an option and not standard, so there is a good chance you do not have it.

    Also check device manager for any Bluetooth or unidentified devices or BT radios, also check control panel for the Bluetooth icon.

    3 Things to fix your issue: (If the hardware is there)

    1) Driver CD that comes with BT drivers has a Windows Update patch that needs to be removed (check the BT directories on the CD) (Or remind me to go more in depth, if you cannot figure it out)

    2)Use Wireless console (generally if it's loaded first it can fix the issues)

    3)Update to Vista SP2, which did something to the BT stack, as it fixed some BT issues i had, after i had disabled it. So loading SP2 brought my BT back again.

    Box says I have no TV, no 3G but it does say...

    WLAN 802.11agn_WW + BT

    So I'm assuming there is BT.

    Please explain more on your 3 points as I was sick the day they taught anything networking!

    hi guys, i bought asus n50vn with specs: t9550, 320gb 7200rpm, atheros wireless, chicony camere, 15.4 wxga/led, 9650m..
    anyway. i have realy strange and annoying problem. sometimes when i play movie. game, or even just music, the computer lag for some miliseconds to a few seconds. it make sounds of metal chocking (dont know how to explain that :) ) in that time the movements of the game\movie is lagging badly.
    anyone else know about that problem?
    any fix?
    any way to analayse the problem?
    it is sound to you like a hardware or software problem? it is realy hard for me to know what cause the problem, coz it happens randomaly. it is not because of a system load, that is for sure.

    im using windows xp with the latest drivers.

    many thanks!

    No probs now...

    I got Vista thinking that yeah I can use that extra useless RAM I got (32bit don't use 4 GIG) in readyboost. Nope can't do that, you need to use a stick drive, DOH!

    So I use Eboostr instead... device yypes supported in Version 3

    * USB thumb flash drives (ReadyBoost® Enhanced recommended);
    * flash memory cards (CF, SD, SDHC, MMC etc);
    * direct RAM cache or RAM disks;
    * Intel® Turbo Memory (Windows Vista® only);
    * Solid-state drives (SSD);
    * As well as additional hard disks.

    Generally I use up the last bit of the 4 gig of ram with 'eboostr' as the prefetch file that Readyboost is supposed to do but does not.

    [IMG]

    eBoostr™, working as an alternative solution to ReadyBoost and SuperFetch technologies, implements a different advanced approach to use flash memory and RAM to speed up your computer...

    [IMG]

    AND IT DOES VERY MUCH SO!

    http://www.eboostr.com/

    brilliant, but still, that thing shouldnt be happen. ASUS must fix it imo.

    now im playing winamp. the cpu load is 00. how cpu priority can fix that? i dont know if that is realy the problem. and damn, i dont intend to do that for every game i open...

    I haven't yet met anyone with the similar problem. Maybe you should call ASUS and/or return your computer? It might be a hardware problem after all. I think that you should also try doing a clean Vista install with proper drivers. If the problem persists, I would give ASUS a call.

    Hmm I get 76 degrees Celsius in stress - either by gaming or by simply using Furmark. I'm talking about the GPU ofcourse...this is strange :confused: since we both have the same N50 model .... and 64 degrees ( before you changed the thermal paste ) and my current 76 degrees is a big difference...besides I just got the Zalman NC2000 cooler pad and .... I DON'T notice any difference in temps durning stress.....what is going on? GPU temp should drop at least a few degrees IMO :confused: I got this cooler pad in hope for some safe overclocking, that would get me from my current 4680 pts to 6000 pts in 3dmark06

    Thx for the reply :)

    Now that calmed me down a bit :) my 76 degrees compared to your 64 seemed a little odd...plus it is rather warm and air is dry here in Poland nowadays so I think that also influences the temp of GPU and other components

    Anyway that Zalman NC2000 is considered the best cooler on the market from what I noticed, yet I fail to see differences in temps with/without it running under my N50Vn :confused: Now I'm not sure if I should mess with OC at all :rolleyes:

    How long battery times have you guys reached by the way? Back when I was using Vista, I reached 5,5 hours surfing, listening to music, chatting and browsing photos. I was using wlan. I had a pretty nicely tweaked Vista setup with powerful battery preserving power-profile. I haven't tried my battery times with linux yet, but I am guessing it would go under 5 hours as I haven't tweaked the power settings yet.

    5,5 hours? that pretty long, I don't have my battery inserted, beacuse I use my N50 mostly as stationary PC :) but from what I experienced I think I got to 3 hours max, so your 5,5 hours seems damn long :)

    Now here is a tip: I used VISTA Manager to initiate the 3Mb L2 cache on the chip which the tweak apps says was not being set by Vista.

    [IMG]

    The result was a much quicker startup and a considerable smoothing out of operations. Basically a well worth setting to be made in a trial version of Vista Manager.

    Is this just setting the SecondLevelDataCache registry value? According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/183063 that value "is only useful for computers with direct-mapped L2 caches. Pentium II and later processors do not have direct- mapped L2 caches." So even if it did make a difference, you could just go in and do this yourself...

    On a side-note: You spend way too much money on software that you don't need (TaskInfo, eBoostr, and Vista Manager). Almost sound like a late-night infomercial.

    I tried the eBoostr trial. It only detects 3GB of RAM in the first place, so if you use 1GB for cache, you'd only be left with 2GB for everything else. That's crap.

    Jug Head, emailing the guide to you now.

    Okay I have run a battery test on my non-tweaked Ubuntu Jaunty. 3 hours, 13 minutes.

    - Wlan enabled, I was connected to the internet for the whole time
    - No USB devices plugged
    - Headphones plugged
    - Screen brightness set to 80%

    I had Firefox, Pidgin (msn client), and Konversation (IRC client) running in the background all the time. I started the test out by watching a full length movie, and after that I downloaded some files and browsed the internet. I also chatted with my friends. After 3 hours and 13 minutes my laptop run out of power. I claimed earlier that I had reached 5,5 hours with Vista. Im not sure how correct this statement is, but I can say for sure that my battery times with Vista were much longer than with Ubuntu.

    Now I am charging it up, and I am going to run another test tomorrow after I have tweaked the system for longer battery life. I am not going to make the battery life longer at the cost of functionality. I am going to repeat the test exactly and see how much my battery life increases.

    Just out of curiosity: is anyone using any non-Windows OS's with the N50 ?

    I ran Windows 7 Beta for two months before switching to Ubuntu Jaunty for three months... now I'm back to Windows 7 RC. I also observed a startling decrease in battery run-time with Ubuntu. Also, at idle my processor was about 7*C warmer with Ubuntu than it is now with Windows 7. I'm sticking with Windows over Linux for several reasons, but this battery-life issue was a big one.
