Weird. I just ran wPrime benchmarks and noticed that my clocked core speed is 1596.2Mhz..Should it be higher than that?

no, usually if you aren't plugged in to a power socket the CPU lowers its frequency to save power

Make sure you're not on battery saving mode either.

Use CPU-Z to check your core speed. It will fluctuate real time.

xilocient, it is normal for the CPU frequency to adjust to the load. It's been normal ever since the Pentium Ms. :) That's how laptops work.

Does anyone know how much difference there is in terms of battery life
    between a1 and b1? I heard from somewhere that t9400 consumes 35w
whereas p8400 consumes only 25w. The 10w difference seems huge, but
how much more minutes/hours would I get from a1? I don't play much games
(will only play when connected to ac adaptor) and I just need it for college
work so I need good 4hours from 9cell batt. Even 20minutes is a huge
    difference for me. Thanks..

Does anyone have any other views about TYPING on the M50VM ... how does it feel for extending periods of typing (I am a programmer), are the keys mushy or very clicky ?

Would the V1V be better - it's a business machine, they're supposed to have better keyboards.

And also what about the keyboard placement, it's not centered, how does that affect things ?

    (thanks !)

For typing, I suggest you read about the recurring "keyboard lag" problem that many users are experiencing with this laptop:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=252283

Currently I don't think there is an official fix for this bug. I, amongst other users, have tried the things suggested in the thread, but to no avail.

In terms of keyboard quality, I am pretty satisfied with the key's action. They obviously lack the depth that you'd get from a desktop keyboard but they're still solid.

When I got this laptop I thought the added numpad would be a bonus, but it just ended up really messing up my typing habits. Now I have to turn off numlock to even access the De/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. This might take some getting used to.

In terms of placement, I don't mind the off-centered-ness at all.

It's not like the processors "Consume" 25 and 35 W respectively. The TDP is a measure of the maximum amount of heat that the CPU can emit. It doesn't mean it will emit it all the time. In fact, all laptop CPUs have very advanced power saving features thanks to which they will most of the time emit only of the fraction of the maximum heat designated.

Now, there is clearly a relationship between the amount of power drawn and the heat output, although it's not an equality.

This is just an explanation. I don't know how much power P8400 draws at idle, or how this compares with the T9400. :)

hey guys, im not sure exactly sure if there is something wrong with my
    m50vm-a1.

i got it about 3 days ago, and then installed all the recommended windows vista updates (about 25 of them).

the problem is that now every time I shut down the laptop or boot it up and during the windows screen, where it usually says Welcome, it will say "Configuring Updates 2 of 3" or "Configuring Updates 3 of 3".

After the updates are done configuring, it'll either shut down the laptop normally or log into windows normally. Is this supposed to happen?

It comes with asus utilities, office 2007 trial and Norton. Its easy to reformat to a clean install of vista by using the recovery DVD and hard restarting it when it asks for the asus disk with the extras.

I haven't been able to get all the utilities to work again (in particular power 4gear extreme) but the install of vista SP1 works fine. If you uinstall vista this way, there's also no activation :)

If it does it repeatedly (not just the one time) then no, it isn't - something didn't finish up properly. Try going to the system restore point before the first of the updates installed (yes, the 25) and go through it again.

hey guys, i uninstalled the asus security application (can't remember the exact name) because it was really annoying me. Almost every website that i visited, this window would pop up and would prompt me to remember password/login info. After i deleted it, the fingerprint login thing disappeared. Is there a download for the asus security program? or will it be on one of the disks that came with my notebook?

It should be on the drivers & utilities CD that came with your notebook. But you can also download it from asus, go to www.asus.com, click support, then go to notebooks, enter M50vm and it is listed under utilities somewhere.

By the way the security manager app is pretty configurable. Once you reinstall it go to your Programs menu, select Asus Security Center/My Identity. You can disable single-sign on and e-wallet if you don't want to use them.

    HELP!

When I try to sign up my b1 for ADW, it keeps saying that my serial does not work with ADW! Do I need to contact ASUS or anything?

Also, do I have to mail in that Notebook Warranty CArd that comes with it? I'm wondering because inside there is a "ASUS Notebook Product Warranty Registration Card" That supposedly has to be mailed to them.

I would contact ASUS and/or the reseller and ask about this. I don't know what documents are required, since I'm in Europe and we don't have ADW here :)

Just got my M50VM-B1 this morning! So far everything is good but I did notice a small amount of flashlighting at the bottom of the screen which doesn't bother me that much. Haven't played around with it enough yet to notice any and other defects. Price was awesome for what I got. Should be great for college!

Now I'm contemplating if I should install Vista64 or not... Thoughts?

Kaupo- Plug looks like the first pic.

Well ... Sorry if this question had been already answered (and for my bad english too).
So, here`s my problem: I was trying to install ubuntu on my M50vm-B1 but it didn`t work out. So, I turned it down and rebooted it. But when it goes to vista again, the lcd was too dark. I tried fn+f6 but it goes only to the half and stops ... It`s strange ...
    Can someone help me ?
    Thanks xD

    Edit:
Sorry ! Just realized that the light sensor just turned on again xP
    *shame on me*
    it`s ok now xD

I'll eventually peel the stickers. Thinking of getting some of that clear-3m film made for cars to put on the palm rest after I remove them to help protect the surface for scratches and everyday wear-and-tear.

A question to those who've successfully installed Vista64 on the M50VM. After an attempt to install Vista64 on my new M50VM-B1 I kept getting a huge red "ERROR" (literally the word took up over 1/2 the screen) message every boot that said something about not being able to load/find "recovery.dat" and windows refused to load any further. After lots of tinkering I'm sure the problem is that the recovery partition needs to be deleted to install Vista64 as it causes some sort of conflict. Anyone else experience a similar phenomenon? Not looking forward to backing up that partition so I can delete it without any worries!

I am using the Vista 32 bit drivers, and it also works in express gate

I would try turning off everything in your house that uses wireless G so that your laptop is the only one that uses wifi and try setting the router to G/N only and then N only and try to connect, and also play around with the channels that your router wifi is using.

how exactly are you connecting to the network? are you using the Asus utility, i did a clean install of vista and just use the built in networking,

are you going into the network and sharing center and viewing your connection status and looking at the data rate if you are connected with N it will read something above 54Mbps

There is any difference between the models M50VM-X1 / M50VM-A1 / M50VM-B1 in therms of gaming?

As far i can see they got the same GPU card but different CPU's. Just the -X1 have less HD and probably the -A1 got better battery life?

    Thx in advance

I check on the Dlink DIR-655 and it shows two pc's my old pc at "N" level and my Asus at "G" level.

on the wireless tab in DLINK-DIR-655. So I know that I can get "N" ... just not on this Asus....

Can you give me the spec's of the driver (Vista) that shows up in your device listing in windows?

    Thank you

Well, it depends on the game. Some will max out the CPU, but for most, the GPU is the bottleneck.

Is that X1 the BestBuy version? If so, also take into account the difference in warranty and support (A1 & A2 have 2 year + 1 accidental, serviced by ASUS, and come with case and mouse; X1 is 1year serviced by BestBuy, no accessories).

I am not familiar with the error, but if you need to remove the recovery partition there isn't an absolute need to back it up (it's still not a bad idea though). The recovery DVD and the drivers CD replicate its function entirely.

Not is the M50VM-X1 version from newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220340

Just thinking that like crysis is should play the same with all three models on high and probably shaders and shadows at medium/low; or i'm wrong? also TF2 should play on high without problem (notice today is the update from TF2 meet the sandwich).

I can check via the router.

As for the "N" option, I just got off the phone with support... and they seem to have heard of this issue and its being worked by the folks in taiwan.

so seems to be a real issue.... funny your not having this issue.

would love to know your setup...

Yes I did try what you stated... changes nothing for me...

M50VM Fan: I have the M50VM-B1, and also a D-Link DIR-655 router. I am connected at 130.0 Mbps via wireless-N. So it's definitely not the router model in general. Why don't you try using the Asus Wireless console utility to connect? Do you have the latest DIR-655 firmware installed? Just a couple suggestions.

I installed Vista x64 to my M50VM-B1 with no problems, but then I'm not sure my experience is relevant to yours as I deleted all the existing partitions during the install, including the recovery partition. Didn't bother to back it up, I assume between the x86 and Vista-64 OEM install media I have and the recovery disc that came with the laptop I would have been able to get Vista 32 on the system again if anything went horribly wrong. Everything went perfectly fine, though.

Thanks for the reply. After getting rid of the recovery partition Vista x64 played fine with the system. Only problem is my copy of Vista was Ultimate only and I really wanted Home Premium so I could use the factory activation. Even vlite couldn't make the disc play nice. So because of that issue I just did a clean install of Vista x86 for now. Thanks again though.

727, Thank you for the reply... it's nice to know that others are making it work...so now I simply have to figure out what I am doing wrong. the " Asus Wireless console utility " utility does not offer me any "real" options to change from "G" mode to "N" mode and I did install " Wireless_Console2_VT_080526.zip " version. All it gives me is to turn wireless or bluetooth on or off.

As for my Dlink DIR-655 I am using 1.11 version as I hear that 1.20 has issues.

Can you tell me which version your using? Driver for Asus and version for DLink?

    Thank you

My intel 4965 agn connects automatically at N speeds if the router is capable...If I set the router to 5 ghz (Airport Extreme) it will then connect at N 300mps....are you talking about adapter properties settings for the wireless card? No need for a 'utility' to connect at N

Maybe someone know how to help... When I plug on usb external HDD or insert new cd into CD-ROM, my system freezes for few seconds (playing movie freeze, mouse stops) and from spekers you can hear strong noise (when there is a music playing - music stops and strong noise occurs). I have no idea what is wrong :/ I'm using windows XP sp3...

I am looking to replace my Asus notebook with another gaming notebook. I really like the way the ASUS M50VM-B1 is configured--much better than the F3E which Asus considers their gaming notebook.

I am ready to buy, but before unlocking the purse strings I would like some comfort food.

Everything about this notebook SCREAMS gaming. Am I wrong? If so, what am I missing?

And, if I am wrong, which model would you suggest?
I am an Asus convert from Dell for several years now!
