Wait for another answer on the 5.1 issue, but I would advise against the X-Fi card. You pay a lot of money for not much improvement over the integrated digital out (if any improvement at all, that is).

Does anyone configuered multimedia touchpad to work with winamp? It works fine with kmplayer, but not with winamp... any idea? Maybe there is a way to map shortcuts or keys on it?

I just received the ASUS M50mV-A1. It is a nice computer. I have one problem with it. IF I can't resolve the issue over the weekend, I may send it back. I have tried different headphones, but no matter which I try there is a horrible high frequency noise coming through. It even comes through when I mute. If I turn the sound up loud enough, I can drown it out, but it is still there in the background. I have two headphone plugs, but the high pitch frequency comes through either jack. It is really loud. What could be causing this and has anyone else had this problem? Any quick fixes? Thanks!

I don't have the mic connected/on. One set of headphones doesn't even have a mic.

I unplugged the usb mouse and the high frequency sound went away. How can I use the usb plugs and not have a high frequency sound? Is there something wrong with this laptop?

are you using the mouse that came with the laptop, because i just stopped using that one and plugged in a different mouse and now the noise is gone.

we have a thread going on this already http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282334

Asus is supposedly going to fix it with a new BIOS

but maybe we are all just using that mouse that came with the laptop and that has a problem causing this?

Dear M50VM owners. This laptop seems extremely interesting, but i have a few question i hope some of you hopefully have the answer to :)

Im currently looking for a laptop that is quiet when doing low intense task such as browsing the internet, using office etc.
How quiet is the laptop when doing this? What about the fans? On all the time?
I dont care if it is noisy when gaming

    Thank you :)

I don't hear anything from my M50VM-B1 that is at full load, playing games or anything, extremely quiet laptop and very good temps.

    a/g/n support

I just got my new Asus M50VM-A1 and I cannot get it to link or recognised the 802.11N functionality. I can connect via the "G" (54Mbps) but cannot get it to connect or show me any "N" option.

Has anyone else seen this issue? how can I fix it.

I have the Atheros 928x from what I can see.

anyone know what I have to do to get it on the "N" band...? 802.11N

    Thank You

probably a problem with the router, what router do you have?

if you have any other devices connecting using G and you don't have a dual band router then your router will automatically switch to G speeds for the other devices.

I have a DLink DIR-655 and I have a second Notebook connected to it via the "N" level... at a cool 280 Mbps... but I cannot get this Asus M50VM-A1 to think it has a "N" capable card.

and SIW tells me it does....

It's not a router issue, it's a notebook issue. it is simply not going onto the "N" level.

Thanks to Mark and Radyoaktive for answering my questions. This laptop seems indeed interesting, and i think ASUS knows how to build a solid laptop. :)

But another question. Ive found a setup that is from a Norwegian site, but wonder about this:

    Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 / 2.4 GHz ( Dual-Core )
    Cache-minne L2 Cache
    RAM 4 GB (installert) / 4 GB (maks.) - DDR2 SDRAM - 667 MHz

1: The bus speed of the P8600 is 1066 Mhz but the ram is only 667 Mhz. Is this very smart? I mean, wouldnt there be some sort of conflict between those two or am i dead wrong?

    2. 667 MHZ compared to 800 Mhz, how much difference is it? I can find the same laptop in another shop with the 800 ram, but then i need to ship it here to Norway.

I am a little disappointed... not really with the Asus M50MV, but with the CPU it has, 2.53Ghz is not enough for smooth 1080p AVHCD editing in Sony Vegas Pro. I wonder if 2.8Ghz would make a difference...

Best to do a clean install of vista to rid all the bloatware (ie Asus update tool, splendid, etc)

i would run stress tests, like Prime 95/ Orthos and all the 3d marks to make sure everything in your system works ok, thats what i did, then a clean install of vista

What else will be removed? These all come with the recovery discs right? I suppose I can clean install Vista then pick which programs I want to install back on.

The only thing I kept was power4gear... everything else wasn't necessary for me. I would try the different utilities first before you reinstall vista. There might be some that you may like.
After reinstalling vista, your system will ask for the drivers CD - this is where all the utilities are stored as well. Simply do a hard shut down (press and hold the power button) and restart. Then you can install the individual drivers and utilities when you enter windows.

I'm curious how this works, particularly in regards to recovery. Is there a separate partition on the HDD for Windows Vista factory install recovery or is it all on the disc that comes in the laptop? If it is the former, would a clean install wipe the factory install partition from the HDD?

DVD and partition are almost equivalent. DVD recovery will not wipe the partition (that would not make much sense). See ASUS Info BoothFAQ, question #14.

I am considering buying this machine - can someone tell me about the keyboard ?

I am a typist and type all day long so the quality of the keyboard is really important. Also I get RSI sometimes so if the keyboard is hard and very jerky, or if it is noisy then that's not great for me. I am using a HP laptop at the mo and the keyboard is great, that's my only worry, apart from that the ASUS looks great.

    Any advice ?

You should consider the possibility of keyboard lag, if you are a typist... see Info Booth.

    Hey,

I just received my M50VM-A1 yesterday. For me, the keyboard was one of its biggest disappointments.

For comparison, I think I like the keyboard from my Dell Inspiron 1300 better. The M50VM's keyboard feels slightly loose (you can marginally wiggle it in directions if you really tried to, and it makes a sound). The feedback on the keys, when they're pressed down, feel slightly mushy and aren't as succinct as I'd like them to be. There's also a tiny but noticeable flex at the top of the keyboard. The keys themselves don't go down as much as I'd like them to, but maybe that's just because I'm used to using a desktop keyboard. The numpad is great, but the 0 key isn't its standard x2 width, and having the numpad on a 15.4 incher takes its toll by forcing some keys in awkward positions; for example, now if I want to use the PgUp and PgDn keys, I am forced to turn off numlock.

Lastly I'm amongst the seemingly increasing number of users who are experiencing keyboard lag. The lag on my laptop is insubstantial (maybe one missed keystroke per 100 or so characters), but it's still enough to tick me off.

I have to go home and check my facts, as some of the things I mentioned above may not be exactly true... I'm not on the laptop right now.

Yeah I was checking the Info Booth but it still didn't answer my question. From what I understand, you can choose to use the partition recovery but you will still have all the bloatware and everything that came with the machine originally. Or you can do a complete clean install using the recovery disks but then the HDD partition for recovery would be wiped as well right?

No, it wouldn't, that's what I said in the previous message that you quoted, as well.

Having the recovery DVD delete the recovery partition would be a bit like ASUS shooting themselves in the foot, wouldn't it? :)

lol right, that's why I wanted to confirm because I was a little confused by the terminology (clean install vs using recovery DVD to factory settings). In my mind, clean install meant wipe everything off the HDD. So doing a clean install using the recovery DVD (with manual reboot at drivers screen) is recommended right? Is there really that much bloatware that comes with the Asus laptops?

It's not really much ASUS bloatware. Much of it may even be useful. But they have stuff like Norton IS, and Microsoft Office Trial, which really bloats up the OS unnecessarily.

Yeah, you're right that "clean install" could suggest HDD being wiped, I only meant it to suggest that the OS is clean, no bloatware. I will make a note in theFAQ on the next edit.

    Great, thanks for that.

    This is what confused me:

So in my case -- I want to do a clean install but keep the recovery partition on the HDD. I would choose Option 1 (Recover to entire HDD in 2 partitions) right?

Also, why not just uninstall the unnecessary programs rather than doing a whole OS clean install? Any advantage to it?

lol... my 2nd partition is just 106GB and it has no data in it.. lol. not even recovery. I got the DVD though.

BTW i did notice the missing of my keystrokes in the keyboard, but it isnt that bad.

How come no one wants to answer if we can make the sound coming out of the speakers louder?

    :(

DocZ, yep, that statement is pretty misleading. I will clarify on the next edit.

As to your question: Uninstalling stuff that is there is never really as good as not having it installed in the 1st place. I don't know what the difference means in practical terms, but as long as you're doing a reinstall, why not spend X amount of time installing stuff that you need, rather than spend X amount of time uninstalling stuff that you don't need, but that leaves traces in the registry and filesystem anyway.

wickedestman, probably noone knows a good answer. I can think of:
    - check WAV and Main volume in the volume controls, both should be max, that will get you the real max available.
    - update audio driver?

Also you will not see the recovery partition, it is hidden. The separate D: partition is there for good reasons, you should keep your personal data there because it can stay safe on the next reinstall.

Ah so then if you want to keep some data in the D: partition then you should recover to first partition only. If you want to just do a complete clean install then you recover to both partitions.

And with both options, the recovery partition remains untouched. Is this all correct? It seems like both options are clean installs, just depends if you want to save some data or not.

okay, i'm kind of confused so bare with me haha. i've made a clean install of windows vista 64bit, it now has nothing but the OS so yay i guess. thing is, i'm not sure where to find all the drivers for vista 64bit that i will NEED to have to make it functioning as well as all the utilities. so far i've installed the intel chipset and nvidia driver from the M50VM review thread.

edit: okay i realized i can get the drivers from the asus support page from the info booth but some of them don't have drivers for vista 64? what happens then?

edit2: nevermind! my driver CD that came with my m50 lets you choose which utilities and drivers to install! man x_x

I have to say this wonderful laptop is undervalued... especially if you compare to some major manufacturers HP, Dell, Sony...

man klas, thank God it is. Imagine if they were to sell it here in Trinidad. People never heard of ASUS laptops, they will charge exorbitent prices on it, maybe more than Dell's and the others, saying that its elite :D
