I scored a 3.8 the first time I ran WEI and I was a bit irked. Then I realized that during the test, I had been using other programs (opening Firefox during the test), and that my battery mode was on BatterySaver. Make sure it's on "High Performance" and leave your notebook alone when you run the WEI.

Simple, but got me back up to the 5.0 everyone else talks about. (Stock driver)

I've noticed that the volume for the built in microphone on this laptop is very, very low. Even if I raise the mic volume to 100% and increase the mic boost, it is hard to hear my voice not to mention the insane amount of static. Anyone else having this problem or have a solution other than turning the noise suppression enhancement on (which simply muffles all sound and sounds weird)??
I want to be able to use the mic and camera to have video conversations but i don't want to use a headset.

I definitely have the same problem.

And... don't try this - do not raise the microphone to 100% volume and 30+ boost, because if you turn your main volume up any louder than 50%, it will result in ear-piercing feedback. I mean, it will send the cats running and the neighbors over.

    It's depressing.

Recently, my laptop's fan has been on 99% of the time, and quite loud. The reason for this is that my processor is getting to dangerously high temps. But even at a normal temp, the fan is still loud. I can get temps of 80+ on both in under a minute of orthos, and will get to high 70's doing the vista experience. It almost never goes below 40 anymore

My fan will make my computer vibrate in the bottom left corner of the laptop within 1 minute of turning it on in a room under 20.

What can I do to make my processor cooler?

What are you doing to make your processor run so hot? Make sure you have good air circulation and if it's still too hot, try getting a cooling pad.

WoW will push cpu to high 80's, while the gpu stays at ~60C
It's in a room that's under 20C, on a hard wood desk, with ventilation on all sides.

My mouse just died too. There's a popup that constantly comes up at the taskbar telling me the device connected to the USB port malfunctioned and it's not recognized anymore.

My laptop also kept freezing at the Asus logo load up screen and the load up sound kept playing every 30 seconds or so. And now my webcam isn't working anymore.

Hi there, recently got this laptop for Christmas!

I haven't tweaked anything yet, and having some problems deciding what to do. I've read through a lot of the thread but have had a hard time grasping all the information..mostly finding bits and pieces that didn't really mix together.

My biggest question is: What OS should I use? On my desktop I use a very minimal version of XP (Performance XP), and this is just too big of a switch to me... Not only am I switching to Vista, I'm switching to a bloated version of it.

I would like to try a version of vista, assuming its performance is comparable to that of XP... are there any fresh installations I should aim towards assuming I want a minimal performance OS? Do I do 32, or 64?

And by the looks of it, all the drivers have been found for XP, so that shouldn't be a problem if I go that route =)

I'm also having connection issues on the laptop, using the drivers they gave me I drop out of wireless a lot..

    Thanks

Hi Vince, and welcome to the forums!
If you want a less bloated version of Vista, I'd suggest performing a clean install and only installing the Asus utilities you need/want. Make sure you have SP1, as that significantly helps with performance. If you have 4gb of ram, I'd give Vista 64 a shot as that will enable you to utilize all 4gb and all the 64 bit drivers already in your drivers disk.
For your wireless issue, try updating your wireless driver from the manufacture website.

You think I should go with Vista 64 over a version of XP?

If I went with XP, should I go 32 or 64?

If you like to multitask quite a bit, then Vista 64 bit may be better for your needs since it can address 4gb of ram. You should also avoid XP 64 bit at all cost... there's very little driver support and extremely difficult for almost any laptop to properly operate with that particular OS.

So vista 64 is working perfect, aside from the internet (which was a problem with the original install too)..

I got 4600 or so 3D06 marks, is that about right? Anything I can do to improve it in terms of performance?

Also, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong to get the internet working right, wireless that is.. I keep getting disconnected regularly... Which driver would you recommend for vista 64?

    Hallo to all.
    I'm here 4 the 1time.
My notebook is M50Vm and I've installed XP SP2 x64 on it. I can't find some drivers like

    ACPI/ATK0100
    ACPI/ITE8708
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_11C1&DEV_1040&SUBSYS_10431636&REV_1002

the last one is modem on high defenition audio bus.

Tried the drivers fo Vista x64, but the installer is promting that it is wrong OS. And installing with the help of windows device installer he doesn't see the device.
    Did anyone saw such drivers?
    Thank you.

FWIW Us G71G-A2 owners are having the same problem. There's a thread over in the asus forum about this.

I'm not convinced it's the mic causing the problem, since I plugged in my headset mic (works fine on other computers) and also had to use 20 or 30% boost for it to be heard. I'm hoping it's a driver issue rather than hardware. Using Realtek r2.14 drivers.

The other nagging issue we've got is noisy fan.

Sorry. I didn't had a chanse to answer yesterday. I installed some drivers from the links below. Some from cd for Vista x64. The problem was with ATK100 but I use the one from cd.
Some software such as Hcontrol, ATKOSD & ATKOSD2 run only in 32bit mode through the WOW emulator. But they work normally. Also have some problems with integrated mic.(internal) i can't hear it normally. For web camera also driver from cd.
One more thing about question mark on audio device. When you install drivers for Nvidia card it has HDMI output. This out also include adio signal and you have to install audio drivers for your Video card. It sounds funny, but it is truth. (HDMI came from SCART standart look wiki if you don't trust me) Driver from official site 179.28 already include this. you need just to mark checkbox.
    Thankyou.

It is the most easiest way, but I need xp x64 because of large RAM. I just need to do calculations. And one thing more is that windows can give more than 1 GB of RAM for the process!

I Also have some problems with software. But mostly it works normally. Usually installer checks the OS and fail instalation. But it doesnt mean that this software will not work on such OS. I use XP x64 for about 2 years. I had it at my desktop and now on my laptop.

    I've tried:
    Rivatuner

    GPU - Z

    idk what else to try

Some notebook CPUs do make this type of sound in certain power-saving states (mostly when they are idle). You could verify if it is fan or CPU by pushing the CPU to full blast using e.g., Orthos Prime, and: if the sound goes away if was caused the CPU; and it will increase together with the fan speed, if it was caused by the fan.

If it's the fan you could consider an RMA (repair) since having a bad or troublesome fan is not a good thing with a computer. If it's the CPU, there is little to be done; there are some workarounds but they all have drawbacks.

I think you can use at least some of them; those that will not work are for the components for which the manufacturer changed.

Even if they replace the CPU/motherboard, it's still possible the new configuration suffers from the same problem. I would say try to live with it, and if you can't, only then try to get it replaced.

Not sure about the coverage of your insurance.

What do you guys use to clean the LCD of your laptop? Mine has been accumulating dust recently, to the point that wiping it with cloth wont completely remove the dirt. Any suggestions?

Oh, and also what do you guys use to clean the dust under the keys? Compressed air?

use a lint-free cloth and moisten it with a little water to clean the laptop. As for under the keyboard, comressed air or remove the entire keyboard to clean it.

Thanks, though pardon me for clarifying, but what do you mean by "lint-free" cloth?

Its just a simple cleaning cloth that doesnt release lint that would settle on your laptop. Staples has them.

I'm curious as to if anyone overclocked the 9600M GS yet. How far did you guys reach and was it a significant boost?

A new version of Realtek Drivers R2.15 is available for download. Maybe it will fix a problem with the internal microphone. I'm going to try it today.

Просто громкость очень маленькая. Меня никто не слышит. Только если запись делать и увеличить громкость потом раз в 5-6 тогда что то слышно становится.

The signal that comes from the micriphone is to small. I have to amplify it up to 5-6 times to hear something. And it is really impossible to use mic. for talking in skype for example. Can you help me? may be I should do smth else. New driver works the same way as all others.
    Thank you.
