    Hey guys,

So, I received my ASUS G75, and I must say, it's impressive.

I ordered it from Xotic, and have some pro's and con's about the system.

    - Pros -

Anyone who doubted the power of a 660M is a fool. I just came out of a game running BF3 at Maximum settings (ULTRA) on EVERYTHING except AA, and it was running so smooth without any stuttering, I couldn't believe my eyes. I don't know how many FPS, but it was smooth enough to not be able to notice ANY kind of slow-down. Extremely satisfactory. Not to mention, after 2 hours of straight gaming, I exited and immediately checked the temps of my GPU - only an incredible 47 Degrees Celsius. Wow.

I also need mention how quiet this thing is. Even at full load, it's unbelievably quiet.

One more thing I'd like to mention, is monitor quality. Through Xotic I was able to order a 72% Gamut screen, and have it calibrated correctly using their Spyder service. Let me tell you, it IS worth the asking price. The difference from my old Matte screen to this new one is clear as day. Anyone considering getting the Spyder Color Calibration and / or 72% Gamut Matte screen, GO FOR IT!

With my chosen hard drive, the Samsung 830, I have no regrets. If you are reluctant on buying an SSD, buy this one. It will change your mind, guaranteed. It's also considered one of the most, if not THE most, stable SSD there is.

    - Cons -

There is one slightly bad point about the Matte type screen, however great it is. I DO notice a very slight fuzziness, especially when white is the dominant color on-screen. I've quickly gotten over this though in the time I've had with it. It's really not that bad.

This damn keyboard!! What the heck!? Maybe it's just me, or maybe it takes getting used to, but I seem to have some problems with the space-bar. It's not a deal-breaker by any means, but I do have to give 2% more attention to hitting the keys more towards their centers, or they won't input correctly. Even as I type this, I find many times when I thought I've hit the space-bar adequately enough, I haven't.

Another bad thing, is when I opened up my laptop for the first time and checked out the screen, I noticed that in many places, the screen was not fully popped into place correctly. I had to manually fix it (However, it was easy). It almost seemed like the guys who put it together did so quite hastily. This was also apparent on the bottom of the system, of which one of the panels was not firmly 100% popped into place. Again, not a deal-breaker, but it did make me worry in those first few moments with my new hardware.

Sound quality is so so. It can definitely be better, and I have found that I can't make the speakers as quiet as I'd like them to go. It's almost like the lowest volume level is always at Medium. It's hard to explain, but basically, it's not possible to put volume level at a whisper with this thing. You need head-phones if you're worried about being too loud.

    - Overall -

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. It was quite a bit expensive, but I feel now it was worth it. I am a 3D Artist and have tested this system already with many applications such as Maya, Max, ZBrush, Mudbox, and Photoshop, all of which I can be running at the same time and switch through seamlessly, without ANY stuttering or lag, and without fear of memory resources becoming scarce.....it's simply fantastic. I even tried pushing the system hard, giving a model 20 million polygons in Zbrush and Mudbox, with FIVE 4096^2 textures attached, and I could STILL work almost flawlessly. That's incredible.

If anyone is wondering what my configuration was to compare my opinion and hardware to your own, here is my order list...

    Processor 3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3720QM (2.6GHz - 3.6GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)

    256GB Samsung 830 Series Solid State Drive (Up to Sequential Read 520MB/s - Write 400MB/s Serial-ATA III - 6GB/s)

    16GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Dual Channel Memory (4x4GB SODIMMS)

    Graphics Video Card nVidia GeForce GTX 660M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11

Thermal Compound Stock OEM Thermal Compound ( IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU Provided FREE with Processor Upgrade!)

Display 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen w/ 72% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)

XOTIC PC Professional Monitor Color Calibration w/ Spyder 3 Elite

Thanks for reading! Hope you make a good decision! ;)

I doubted the 660m. It's actually better than I thought it would be, it's a little slower than the 670m which is just a 570m with higher clocks. It's that fast, yet runs so cool.

Of course the sound quality is terrible. It uses Altec Lansing speakers. If you actually want a lappy with great sound quality, take a look at the MSI G series notebooks (Dynaudio), Toshiba Qosmio (Harman/Kardan) and Alienware notebooks (Klipsch).

That is great to hear. I'd love to know what your actual fps is in BF3 and other games that would push that gpu and proc.

Thanks for the edit ALLurGroceries. If it weren't for hard working people like yourself we'd all be scrolling for days. :)

Cool, thank for reaffirming my recent purchase :)
BTW: about the Spyder unit corrective service; I heard to fully take advantage of the correction, that particular service needs to be implemented on a Monthly basis. True?

I cannot see why that'd be true. As long as you left your color settings alone, I don't see how they would change by themselves.

Hello there, I've been paying attention to this thread for some time, since i'm in the market for a new pc and i'm considering a gaming laptop.

    I'm currently considering the following:

    ASUS G75VW-TS71 Gaming Notebook - 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.3GHz, 12GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-ray PlayerDVDRW, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M, 17.3 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit at CompUSA Puerto Rico

There's a couple of things that are holding me back though:
HDD: Its only 5400 rpm, So i wonder how much of a bottleneck that'll be, boot times aren't that important, but performance is.
Screen: Its 1600x900, Is the visual difference from 1080p very noticeable? How will it compare to the performance gained due to playing on a lower res
Size: 17'' and 10 pounds sounds very big and heavy, how easy is it to transport? I don't plan on taking it to work every day, but i would like to be able to take it to friend's houses and coffee shops without too much trouble.

I was originally looking for the g55vw, but i can't find a lot of retailers selling it , specially since i live in puerto rico and shipping prices go up a lot.

    Any suggestions? Comments?

You should go for the Asus G75VW-RS72.

With the RS72 you will have a 1080p screen, a better gpu (GTX 670M) and a 7200rpm hdd. The price differece is minimal. BUT you will loose the blu ray player.

The price for the RS72 is $1415.23 on XoticPC !

I'm not very fond of ordering online, shipping makes me nervous, since the local post office has proven troublesome at times, adds additional cost, and makes things like returns a huge hassle.

About the 670m over the 660m... I don't know, i was thinking of the 660m since its the new kepler, but to be honest I'm not sure about the performance difference.

    Hi folks!

I read many things and look many photos of your topic and i would like to say a big thanks to you paulnelson88 (and the other members too).

I just buy my G75VW, with GTX660M, 4GB and the small resolution screen (it's okay because i play on my 24" 1080p). For 1200€ in France, it's a great deal.
I take place of my "old" G53JW.

The GPU run particularly cooler (56°C on MSI Kombustor) so idecide to try some overclock with. I reach 1085Mhz on the GPU (max MSI afterburner +135Mhz + GPUBoost) and a impressive 3000Mhz for the VRAM (+500Mhz).
The result on 3DM11 was P2937
realized with 296.44 nvidia driver and notebook in High performance mode.
    2683 at graphic score only.

Okay, guess I'm lying then... BTW, Mine is configured differently, apart from the GPU being 660M.

Anyways, I came back here to post something I think you all should read, as this just happened to me today.

    I am seriously disappointed.

I have a problem with the system, 3 days after receiving it. One hour it was flawless, then literally the next hour, it completely ceased to operate correctly.

I now get absolutely nothing when I push the on button except LED Lights, Keyboard Lights, and the On / Off button light turning on. No BIOS, no ROG logo at boot-up, NOTHING. I was having an amazing time with it, as it IS a fantastic laptop, but this is devastating, and terrible timing. I really needed this new laptop to get some work done by June 8th, now I am stuck with an RMA and sending it back.

I enclosed a note on the keyboard, so that when the repair guys at ASUS open up the returned product, they can read what happened and what I expect as compensation. I wrote my number on it asking whoever is repairing / replacing it to give me a call and have a little chat with me about this situation.

I spent about $2,800 for this thing, with all the extra stuff etc. I knew something was up when the computer first arrived. When I opened it up, all the panels were out of place and not popped in correctly, on the bottom and around the display panel. I let it go, since the laptop worked fine. Now it is testament to how poorly and hastily put together this stuff is. I ordered mine from Xotic PC, by the way, if anyone was wondering.

I did call Tech Support, and after trying several potential solutions that failed to fix it, (Taking battery out, Holding this or that down 20 seconds, etc) and as kind as they were, the only thing they said I could do is return it for repairs. I really didn't want to have to waste my time with this crap. Seriously aggravating.

So as far as the laptop being good or bad, it's good, it's just that they perhaps rushed it a little too much during production....or I'm just terribly unlucky.

    Yes it is.
See the screen +135Mhz GPU and +500Mhz VRAM

I put 4Go (2*2) of Kingston Hyper X 1600, no problem and max score to windows 7 évaluation.

Hi guys, I purchased a G75 just eight days ago, last night it completely froze up while playing battefield 3, shut down, and then upon startup wouldn't go past the "starting windows" screen. It wouldn't boot into safe mode, the repair function didn't work, so I ended up resetting it to factory standard. Everything seems to be in order now, but I was wondering if you guys could help me figure out what was the cause of such a catastrophic failure. I really don't want to deal with such an issue again.

Also, just for clarification I'm not what you'd call computer savvy, the only reason I purchased this system was to make the switch from console to PC gaming before I went off to college.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

I got the G75 Best Buy model and noticed the 3610QM cpu will only turbo boost to 3.1 even with intel burn test, not 3.3ghz. Am I missing something here?

One stupid question! :D Since Intel HM77 chipset in G75VW supports dual-channel memory, into which memory slot I insert another 4GB memory module in the configuration with only one 4GB module (like this one)? Is it the one next to the first (the hard accessible place, under the keyboard) or one of two easily accessible from the bottom?

Hey guys...i just picked up my G75VW, after getting it i asked the guys to put in an SSD, do a complete wipe out of the other drive and a clean install of Win onto the SSD...two problems so far that i would like some answers too (im in another city than the tech that worked on this)

    1. The ROM button next to the power button only goes through two options..
    3D is Enabled
    and
    3D is disabled
I assume there is supposed to be more options on that button like High Performance, Office, and Quiet etc.
Is there a way i could fix/change this? Do i need to be?..could anyone please help?

    2. On the HDD of this thing it came with 750GB+750GB.
After the clean install onto the SSD and a wipe out of the HDD...i am left with 698GB on the D: What happened to that? could someone pls explain this to me or am i missing someting? thank you!!

I think there is only room for 2 drives unless you ditch your optical drive. You can verify that the other hard drive (the other 750 GB) is still there by going to Disk Management. If it is, then they probably put the two in a RAID configuration.

the button next to your power button should be for enabling or disabling 3D only to my knowledge and this should only be for if you ordered the laptop with the 120Hz display and have the nVidia glasses.

Regarding your question on disc capacity, I am assuming you are asking why your computer is only showing 698GB when you ordered a 750GB drive. This is actually a very well known issue and it is due to how your computer computes the size of a drive compared to how we compute it. Some articles on the matter can be found here Hard disk label vs. actual capacity difference seems excessive... - Hard-Disks - Storage and here Hard-Drive Capacity Math: Tech Clinic - Popular Mechanics

THank you! yes it is the 120HZ display and did come with the 3D glasses. I have one more question regarding that for you that hope you can answer to a noob like me :)
When i go to the NVIDIA control panel. Under change resolution my refresh rate is set to 60HZ. Should this be changed to 120HZ at all times? thank you ahead of time...!
If there is anything else that should be in a certain way under my NVIDIA control panel feel free to let me know.

Regarding the HD space, they actually took one of the 750GB drives and left it behind at the store by accident. I will be getting it back later this week so i will use that as another external. Thanks for the help guys!

The display will not output as 120hz unless it is 3D so just leave it at 60hz. And about how you wanted that button to change your battery mode such as battery saver, performance, etc. if you hold the Fn key and press spacebar it should do that for you. Or just click the battery icon in your task bar if they removed that command. Congrats on the laptop!!

    Hey there Groc,

Actually, I know it isn't for sure. I opened up the lappy and took out the ram, and even the SSD, and tried booting up.

In theory, I should have gotten a BIOS screen at least, but still, NOTHING. It leads me to believe the MOBO is defective...

You cannot start a computer without RAM. It won't POST. The screen won't show anything and might not even initialize to the point where the backlight comes on.

Instead of taking all the RAM out, try it with one stick at a time.

As you can see some improvement in 3dmark score after doing a clean install but it came back down after doing windows updates, but still better than factory installed Win 7. While in 3DMark Vantage i got a little low score after Clean Win 7 install but it got better after installing windows updates, well as yet i dont' understand why i got less score after doing a clean win 7 install, but much better after windows updates.

    Overclock Testing & Performance Statistics:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I started playing with the clocks of 660m, and was keeping a close eye doing it bit by bit. I started with increasing GPU Core clock first, and after hitting the limit on MSI After Burner i started to increase mem clock, which improved performance in the beginning but latter on provided no big difference. while Temps started climbing up if going above 400mhz of OC for GPU memory. While it seems like an increase of 135mhz to the core clock and 350mhz to the mem clock kept the temps under control and performance wise was in better condition looking at all other scores.
These numbers mentioned below are an increase in addition to the Original base clocks of the GPU using MSI After Burner, please note that overclocking you GPU clocks can potentially damage your hardware.
if you don't wanna go through all these scoring details, then go to the summary at the end of this post.

    Gamming Benchmarks
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While running other tests i also benchmarked a couple games and saw some improvements, atleast an increase of atleast 5 fps was achived using an overclock of +135mhz on core clock and +400mhz on mem clock of the GPU, which is almost the difference of 660m from 670m. i will try to test those games with +450mhz overclock on mem clock when i will get laptop cooler for it. recently i was figuring out a way to go further on core clock, but am stuck in some important stuff right now.

    SUMMARY AND GRAPHS
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While looking at the score i feel like an overclock of +135 for the core and +350 for the memory should be a better choice. below i am posting some graphs based on the score i got during this overclocking process, what you guys think will be a best oc for this graphics card.

Oh man, what a interesting post.... mine was ridiculous.

Interesting things, your VRAM seam to O/C less than mine. Mine was stable @+500Mhz. Your performance on 3D Mark 11 seams to be better @lower VRAM frequency, probably error rate was too high at higher frequency. I will see if i have the same problem.

I think our GPU can pass more than +135Mhz and GPU Boost. Anybody knows a solution to pass higher than +135Mhz in Afterburner or EVGA Precision?

Temperatures seams to be more dependent of VRAM frequency more than GPU frequency. I will check this on my rig with and without notepal u3.

lolzz.... :D your post was good enough, i didn't had enough time to do it all at once so to keep track of my overclocks and what did i get during that, i had to make a chart, and at the end when i looked at it, i was like, woww this looks beautiful i should make a good post of it for the benefit of others.

I have seen multiple cards of same model, with ram chips from different manufacturers. so may be mine didn't came with a good vram chips. or may be cooling isn't good enough on mine one, coz it does gets pritty hot from bottom right side. and i have to move my laptop on different positions on my leg to not burn my leg (it happens when i go +450 or up on vram)

I am thinking of Riva Tuner to do the dirty job :) of going past +135 mhz core clock, i used it 4 or 5 years back for the same purpose and got pritty good results, but haven't used it since then, but am going to install and study it soon, but it will be better if we can go past +135mhz on core using MSI AB.

Maybe I'm blind, but I read through the whole thread and couldn't find instructions on how to install new memory. I've got 2x4GB 1600MHz SODIMM from Kingston I want to install, but I don't want to attempt it without knowing how beforehand.

I've found a few YouTube videos, but they don't show in detail how to install the memory.

Is there a service manual or can someone please explain how?

    Thanks so much.

You can find ram slots inclosed by a red rectangle in the below picture

and for how to install memory, look into the below video, although this is not asus g75, but ram slot work the same, so there shouldn't be any problem.

The temps, power draw, and the sleek looks of the G75 with 660M are impressive, but the performance still seems lacking to me even with the considerable overclocks. The improvements in performance over my 5870M just don't seem worth the $1300 pricetag. Also VERY disappointing Asus continues to use their asinine design preventing access to the interior, having to take off the LCD for example? Ridiculous. And the oversized, custom PCB board for the 660M is also aggravating to see.

This all saddens me because the sleek looks and the cooling system/temps are all very attractive, the rest is just sickening to see.

    You're blind :D

    I'am playing all days :D.

Very comfortable, even in 1080p with external LCD (my lcd original resolution was 1600x900). 30 or 60FPS it depends of area (i play with vsync on) with all options in high except shadows on medium and anti aliasing).

How does it run in max settings and 1080p? According to notebookcheck.net the 660m SHOULD average 40+ fps in the highest settings.

I play D3 with all settings max even shadow. Really smooth. Get lag here and there but I'm pretty sure it's still server lag. I'm on inferno so this is with a lot of stuff going on as well and playing with other people. Hope this helps :)

I feel sorry that you guys spent so much on a GTX660m when you could have gotten a GTX680m.

But at least ASUS has the best gaming laptop design in my opinion

MSI if you want more performance, ASUS if you want a more mainstream gaming notebook.
