It worth the price, very good laptop, the hdmi out is perfect. Games are playable in 3d mode on the laptop and using hdmi cable as well.

I just recieved my laptop about 1 hour ago. I LOVE THIS THING!!! Burning the recovery disks now. Upgrading from the Dell Inspiron 1705 (same as XPS without all the flash). Super happy so far.

does this G73JW-3DE come with 3D receptor? internal or external? Thanks
-
-
I have tested playing WOW on the Seagate Momentus Hdd... didnt get the occasional lag reportedly caused by the Hdd spin down.
So I guess they have installed a new firmware for them?
The IR emitter for 3D is on the left side of the camera, when it is active, the light is in the form of '3D' wording.
Cheers -
And some news about G73SW-3DE? Because I dont know if buy an Alienware m17x r3 or an Asus g73SW-3DE
-
G73SW-3DE is much better priced.....to build an m17x r3 (with the same spec as the SW 3D) will cost about $500 more

Hi all,
Just received my G73jw-3de this evening and have been messing around with making recovery discs etc.
Now that I have actually been trying to use it I encountered my first issue. I read in this thread that to get the 3D demo to work you have to play it in Cineplayer which was a nice tip. Loaded up Cineplayer, downloaded the prompted update and loaded up the 3D demo. Hooray, it worked, at least at first.
About 1min into the clip, if that, the audio starts to stutter unbearably and doesn't rectify itself until I click elsewhere on the clip (i.e. make it jump forward 20 seconds). Of course, the stuttering then starts again.
I should note that everything on my laptop is stock.
Has anyone else had this? Do I need to update my audi drivers and if so which ones and where?
Your help is much appreciated.

i had/have exactly the same in mentioned program
i am now running another program for seeing 3d movie and i have no problems with the sound. -
From then on, it stopped doing that.
(Demo and 3d movies works fine on that program)
Maybe try reinstalling Cineplayer.
Or try using PowerDVD. Asus DL site -
Lee, apologies but I am not sure that I understand your post?
What do you mean "from then on it stopped doing that"? From when on? Had you changed or updated something?
Will try reinstalling Cineplayer and see if that works. Will report back. If the issue is with Cineplayer, does anyone have any recommendations of alternative software? Lee, you mention PowerDVD. Is this free? I could see it immediately on the ASUS DL site link, but will look again in the morning (its past midnight here in the UK so its bed first)!
Thanks again. -
Search AsusDVD on the asus site. Download and install it. It's free -
Downloaded PowerDVD from ASUS. It's version 9 and when trying to play a 3D Bluray it says I need software which supports 3D bluray playback??
Starting to get annoyed now. You specifically buy the 3DE model but can't use it for 3D Bluray? Defeats the purpose :-(
Any suggestions?

Im using powerdvd 10 if i watch 3d movie but remember the amount of 3d titels is still limited. As well as the 3d computers. So the software for 3d movie playback is also limited. little bit more patience i geuss.
for me the biggest annoying thing in this pc at the momemt is spindown of the hdd. I am using now the crystaldiskinfo program to play a videogame. even after updating the firmware.
playing 3d games like tronlegacy or bc2 or cod black ops is very nice. Need for speed is also nice in 3d. even that game isnt fully 3d ready.' -
Thanks Jelski. I guess I will need to pay for the upgrade to powerDVD 10 then? Oh well.
I accept what your saying about 3D titles and PCs, but whats annoying me is that this particular PC should do it out of the box and even includes software (CinePlayer) to enable it. I am also concerned that most others aren't having the same problems with Cineplayer. Whats the underlying problem? Why won't my, supposedly identical and equally as powerful machine play what others will? If the product isn't capable of doing what is should, don't produce it IMO.
Perhaps its linked to the spindown issue on the harddrives? I don't honestly know if I have this problem or not, but I do know that I am not running the lastest Seagate Momentous XT firmware. If I went to update, can I just use the Seagate firmware update utility on their site or do I have to do all the burning ISOs and entering command lines stuff I have read elsewhere? Would rather avoid that if possible. -
-
Harddrive firmware hasn't been updated but I didn't notice stuttering when briefly playing Crysis last night.
If I uninstall CinePlayer, is their a copy on the utilities disc that I can reinstall? Will have a look and give it a shot. -
Try running laptop on High Performance.
-
Has anyone been able to connect an external 3D monitor to this? I've been doing a lot of research and it seems the only options are VGA (max 1680x1050@120Hz) or HDMI 1.4 (1080p@24Hz, too slow for gaming).
Unfortunately this notebook does not have DVI out, even though most 3D monitors use Dual-Link DVI-D. (HDMI to Dual-Link DVI-D adapters won't work because the HDMI output is not dual-link). -
Thanks for the continued support guys!! MUch appreciated.
Anyway, the latest update is that normal bluray runs fine. The occassional drive spindown stutter during the trailers and stuff, but nothing during the film.
Tried the Christmas Carol 3D bluray again and all teh pre-movie stuff stuttered as usual, but watched the first 30mins without a single stutter in the actual film. Good stuff.
As for the demo, its still absolutely horrendous.
By the way, I haven't changed anything. Was always on "High Performance" under the Power4Gear stuff and plugged in. Still totally confused and a bit irritated, but definitely less annoyed that the actual movies seemed to play ok.
Wish I could just work out why the problem is there at all though.....! -
Well I used to have more stutters initially playing crysis but updating firmware hdd did helped ... still not completely removed. One important thing is the shader settings in that game ... which if enabled on high/ultra settings can cause the game to stutter (known issue for the game)... try rducing that ... also you can have shadows to medium/low (not that important and generally can get very complex).
Cineplayer setup is generally preloaded on first hdd partition and if not removed ... should be on following location -
C:\eSupport\eDriver\Software\Sonic\SonicDVD_V5.6_A04\Vista32_Vista64_Win7_32_Win7_64_5.6 -
Thanks for all the tips people.
Starting to think I have a more serious problem though
Tried playing my first game in 3D today. Half-life 2. Obviously, not really a game that should tax this machine, even in 3D. In maximum settings at 1080p without 3D everything seems very smooth. Very impressive.
With 3D enabled, everything at minimum settings, at 720p I must get about 5 - 10 fps (if that)!! Its not just stuttering. The whole game is a slide show. I mean, I know 3D vision hits your framerate, but not that much on such an old game.
EDIT: Disabling laser sight fixes it. Apparantly an issue with this game. Panic averted! -
Hello everyone, I've ended up on this thread countless times when searching for information about the g73jw. I finally got one a couple of days ago, very nice choice! I 'm not really a gamer, I do like to mess around with photoshop, dreamweaver and I may get back to 3d animation, I used to work on Maya 7, but my old pc couldn't handle much. An upgrade from my 7 years old P4 2.8 (!) was mandatory, so I decided to go for it. Great specs for the price, I chose the 3DE for the 120hz matte screen, definitely worth it - I just can't live with the glossy ones - and 3D is a plus.
Anyway, I just completed a fresh installation using the latest drivers, the only problem I have is my webcam, which really really sucks.. It drove me crazy for the last 2 days, that is one reason why I did a clean install, to see if that would fix it and also get rid of some bundled s/w, but nothing changed. I cannot get more than 5 or 6 fps! It is impossible to be that way, ok nobody expects much from a webcam but I don't believe it cannot provide 15-20 fps for a decent video call (I have plenty of Bandwidth)... Tried different drivers, rolled them back to microsoft, with or without LifeFrame3 and/or virtual camera, some other caption software like VirtualDub various resolution settings - no luck.. Only bios update to 203 is left to be done.
The one that comes with mine is the Azurewave VID 13d3 & PID 5122. In the forums other say it works just great (jh or jw), other say they cant make it work at all, I don't know. I 'd like to have this fixed, whatever you have to suggest, I 'll give it a try. Thanks! -
Hello guys, Anyone here playing warcraft 3 on 3d? Is it good?
-
You mean Starcraft 2 right? Warcraft sucks.
-
Downloaded the trial version of powerdvd 10 and the 3d playback on it for me stutters even more than in Cineplayer! Gutted!
Can you possibly do a check for me. In settings on PowerDVD mine reads like this:
Player information:
Player region code: 2
Current drive: E:
Title region code: Not available
Audio attributes: Not available
Hardware Information:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ running at 1729 MHz
3DNow! technology: Not Detected
Enhanced 3DNow! technology: Not Detected
3DNow! professional technology: Not Detected
IA MMX technology: In Use

IA SSE 2: In Use
Video accelerator: DirectX VA (not in use)
Multispeaker audio device: Speakers (Realtek High Definiti (not in use)
S/PDIF output device: Speakers (Realtek High Definiti (not in use)
The fact that all of the 3D elements show as "not detected" concerns me. Does it show the same on yours? I think I am potentially getting stutters because eveything is being software driven.
Interestingly, even when its stuttering and I bring up the task manager only about 15% of my resources are actually in use. -
hej pierre2k
Exactly the same only my bd drive is G:.
I am struggling too with 3dvideo and bluray playback i was trying to watch avatar blu ray and i got all visual noise from the blu ray. Also if one movie plays in one player it wont always work in another. I am pretty tired too of the 3d playback right now. I got some other problem which bugs me more. that is the stuttering/delay's in general in windows 7 cant even listen mp3 without stutter. My old XPSm1710 is running smoother. Fallout new vegas stutters the whole time. I got the crystal diskinfo program running now from the bootup so the disk should run at max now. but still..... i am still experimenting. I was thinking maybe i got a monday morning windows 7 installment or hdd built drive. bad company 2 runs smooth as a well oiled engine after starting it 2 times(1st time it always stutters too!?!?!?!?).
Did you install any codecs for movie playback? I did maybe that messes with the bluray and 3d??? If I found something new i will let you know. -
Just got to power up my G73JW-3DE I ran the nvidia 3d test and it looks great however when I try to run the 3d demo asus has on it I don't see anything but side by side images and the 3d indicator light by web cam remains off during the demo any help is appreciated as I am new to thistype of tech.
-
This is just all so random and damn annoying. In terms of my own machine, a few things I would confirm to you:
- not played many mp3 files (not copied over yet), but the 3 sample tracks with windows play without stutter in Windows Media Player
- normal Bluray playback in 1080p is flawless in CinePlayer. No stutter at all. Same applies to the free Powerdvd 9 from the Asus website.
- Only got one 3D bluray as previously mentioned. Plays flawlessly once in film on CinePlayer, but all the pre-movie stuff (trailers etc) stutters just like the 3D demo. Strange.
- Regarding games I have only played Half-life 2 and Crysis so far. Half-life 2 is very very smooth both in 3D or 2D as long as I don't enable laser sight, but I believe thats a known bug with the game rather than an issue with my laptop. Crysis runs fine first. Obviously its a demanding game so framerates aren't amazing, but no stutter. FPS varys from about 30 - 20 1080p, all high, no AA, depending on the scene which is about right I think. At 720p its between 45 - 35, but doesn't scale well on this screen.
- my harddrives did click very slightly as one spun up then spun down all the time. Using HDDScan to disable advanced power management features resolved the noise, but I have never noticed any stutter regardless in games or general use, even without HDDScan due to the hardrive. My hardrive firmware is SD22 (newest is SD24 I think).
- Not downloaded or installed any codecs of any kind.
- Did download a 576p 3D demo video from the nVidia website called Knight's Quest to test. It runs flawlessly in 3D in CinePlayer, but of course, its not 1080p so it may be less demanding?
As far as I can tell so far, everything on my laptop works fine, except some issues with 1080p 3D playback. The harddrive issue is firmware related and I hope ASUS release an official OEM version of SD24 soon. However, given that I specially went to buy the 3D version so I could enjoy 3D bluray I am very irritated by it.
I ordered Piranha 3D a few days ago online. Its a 3D bluray. I will test it when received and feedback the results. Fingers crossed I can actually watch it through in 3D without a hitch.
You need to load CinePlayer and then open the "3D Demo" file in in. As you may see in the discussions here, it doesn't run smoothly for me, but it does work in 3D. I would be interested if you could feedback when you get it working and tell me whether it plays from beginning to end without a hitch, or if it stutters.
Thanks,
Pierre2k -
1. Make sure that 3d is on Nvidia control panel.
2. You have turned on 3d in cineplayer. For that make sure following is set up properly.
cineplayer > settings > Enable 3d processing to automatic.
cineplayer > settings > In Display select 'active shutter 100hz or higher'
there is one more setting for 3d conversion but that is for 2d to 3d and you can ignore this currently for your problem.
After this restart your cineplayer and then open the demo. Duble click to go FULL SCREEN.
Hope this helps. -

Yup Dota works great in 3d, even if it feels a little pointless with such poo graphics.

Got another problem now, though to be fair, this could be software related rather than anything to do with my machine.
Previously I had only dabbled with Crysis to see if it worked. Tonight I have actually trying to play through some of it and am generally impressed at how smoothly it runs at High/1080p settings. Due to all the motion blur etc, it seems faster than reality too, which is nice.
However, played it 3 times and each time, perhaps 10mins in the the game if has completely crashed. No warning, no artifacts, no slowdown and no stutter. Just, working perfectly well then frozen! The GPU fan is full speed at the time, but it is a demanding game so not sure if its a temp issue or not. CPU temps are fine. Is there any way to measure GPU temps on this machine? Also, anyone else had problems with Crysis on it? Starting to loose my cool here, lol! I could have lived with stutter during 3D trailers, but if a gaming laptop can't play games I might as well throw it in the bin (excuse me being a bit melodramatic). -
That should be all you need for you GPU monitoring.
GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility -
Well it is a game issue most of the time ... try to look into event viewer. Mine was crashing on syswow64 and that is windows support for 64 bit overlay on 32 bit.
Two things you might want to make sure ... update your crysis to latest version and update windows ... -
Not sure about the event viewer. Will check it next time (though I hope there won't be a next time).
Will also try running in 32-bit if need be, but I think that may put me at a disadvantage when I have 8gb of RAM to draw on (think only 64-bit uses your memory beyond 4gb?).
Thanks for the ongoing tips!
Just to give an update on Crysis, I was only running patch 1.1. Updated to 1.2.1 and after a 30min play session it seems to be running fine (with a few more FPS to boot I think).
The only issue now is that some jeeps have no rear wheels, but apparantly this is a well documented bug with the game which manifests when loading a previously saved game.
All good...............for now. *touches wood and crosses fingers*
edit: played for a solid hour now. All good and really enjoying the game and the laptop. This is why I bought it. Sure I wanted the lovely matte screen, I needed a new PC anyway, I wanted the mouse, the nice chiclet keyboard, the bluray player etc, but getting to play Crysis smoothly at High settings and 1080p is just awesome. First time I haven't been frustrated by this bloody thing, lol!!
As for temperatures, the GPU is reporting about 32 idle, 60 after an hour of Crysis. Seems ok to me.
Thanks again to everyone for all the help. Fantastic community here! -
-
What's your ambient temp? -
-
-
-
How is that 120hz screen on the 3de? Is it matte or glossy and how does it look... wondering if its worth going 3de instead of a1.
-
And yes it's a matte screen.
I think its worth it even with just the matte screen; however, thats just me. -
hello guys...
finally i have my own G73JW-3DE
brought it from GenTechPC, nice support...
i have no problem at all until now...
cheers
