    Hi All,

I've been doing a lot of research on gaming laptops and have come to the conclusion that the Asus G73JH-B1 is the right one for my son. Need some help though. We're going to get him one for Christmas because he hopes to take game design in college. Being new to this world, beyond just playing the games, hope some of you folks could list minimum, mid-range & "wish list" level of specs his system should have. Obviously, this system starts out with quite a few of the things he could take advantage of immediate, but given that he may be heavy into level and character design, not so much the programming side, what would you add on? As I said, "must haves" versus "this would be a great extra" would be helpful. Detail specs please - as you would see them as options to select.

Thanks to you all! This forum has been immensely helpful!

    Linda

...just an "add on" to my previous note...

Are there things that come "by default" as preloaded items that should be taken off of the Asus? Apps, shortcuts to offers, etc.? Thanks again for any advice!

    Linda

This happened to me.. this is stupid.. they spend so much and can't spend some extra on proper rubber feet.. my hp nver had this issue. I'm actually so irritated by this.

He'll be really happy with it for sure. Now i have one and just started university. You really don't need to get anything extra to be frank if you get the G73JH-B1 model. What you might want to add would be an 128GB Crucial C300 SSD which would make the laptop faster... AT most you would want to have it repasted by gentech as the stock thermal paste degrades quickly usually and you won't want to repaste it.. its very complicated... other than that, make them test it... The G73JH has some issues sometimes so just to be sure.. gentech won't charge you from what i know... their service is great so i would get it from them.. my G73 came from them and was shipped under 24hrs.. after stock came... Also ask them to do a vBIOS update so you won't have to do it yourself.

    That's your perfect G73 than.

Im doing a bachelor in video game and I bought this computer to do my work when I can't do it at school and to be able to work anywhere in my house (to keep an eye on my 1yr daughter). And it does the job perfectly out of the box. You don't need to upgrade except for the 2d-3d software and probably a tablet.
Just follow the steps given by Sean at the beginning of this forum to clean the computer from unneeded crap and to update the graphic card drivers.

I have been running mine for a month or so now.

I did not read the whole thread but here are my observations:

    Likes:
    Screen is awesome
plays games great, refresh rate seems fast enough for FPS games
kyb buttons are not mushy, good positive input
    VERY quiet!
Stays very cool. Never gets hot to the touch
Love the back-lighting on the kyb

    Dislikes:
The mouse pad scroll feature is a pita. Does not work consistently for me.
no PCMCIA slot (old school but would be nice)
No CF card reader (not many others have these either)
The KYB back-light does not come on until after you log in (this is probably fixable, I just have not messed with it yet).
No external button to turn on/off the wireless adapter when lid is closed
    No RAID option

Overall this is a fantastic laptop. The only major complaint is no RAID. All the other stuff is nit-picky. I have no regrets about buying it.

I'm looking into purchasing one of these in Calgary, Canada. And it seems like the only option I have is buying one from Memory Express. Can anyone here offer me any other options?

A friend of mine has one and it is indeed a very impressive machine. Although he has a bit of an overheating problem with it. Although from some of the posts I've seen on here opinions seem to differ. Is this because the later batch of B1's that ASUS sent out corrected that problem?

Just got my JH-B1. Been using it for 20 min now and love it. Keys and the mouse pad seem to work fine no lag or anything. Will but it to the test after i get the bloatware uninstalled.

    Hi all,

I was choosing between the G73JH-B1 & G73JW-A1. After some reading, I decide to go with the G73JH-B1, and to order it from XoticPC.com. Here is the rest of the story:

    11-15-2010 // Placed order.
11-16-2010 // Got e-mail confirmation. Being prompted for payment.
    11-18-2010 // Wired the payment.
11-23-2010 // Got reply, XoticPC got the $$, yet G73JH-B1 has been discontinued & they got none in stock.

I don't understand how they could accept & confirm an order, without having the product in stock.

Finding out from the same e-mail, that:
    - my payment has been received
    - the product has been discontinued
    - they got none in stock

    isn't a good shopping experience...

If I knew that they didn't have the product in stock, I would probably check with the other vendors first.

I am kind of stuck now. Should I ask for refund, and if I did, which side should be responsible for the wire transferring fees? Even if they gave me refund, now would be too late to order the G73JH-B1 from the other vendors.

This incident just reminds me of this:
    - YouTube - SEINFELD Car Rental Customer Service .wmv

Maybe both me & XoticPC should blame ASUS. [IMG]

    *Update - 11/25/2010 (Thu)

Checked with GenTechPC.com & few others, and they got the G73JH-B1 in stock.

Just sent a request to XoticPC for getting refund. I doubt it will be smooth, as I demand them to pay me back the wire transfer fee, which is $35 + $26.

(I honestly don't see how it should be my responsibility, as XoticPC failed to fulfill the accepted order)

Will see how XoticPC handles it.

its not asus's fault.. i would contact xoticpc and demand a refund.. this is digusting to be frank.. they have a few reps here so make noise about sueing them etc as really their fault for advertising the product and not selling it... ask for the wire fees too with refund... i would go to gentech as they should have stock for sure and would nver do this. I got my G73 ASAP from gentech with excellent service which is much more than i can say for xoticpc's service and long waiting time...

Don't fret Jerry, I kinda ran into the same thing with Newegg.

    11-10 / ordered G73JH-B1
11-10 / mailed check with delivery confirmation
11-15 / NE received my check
11-17 / check deposited and cleared
11-20 / no update on order
    11-23 / ask for update
11-23 / response that check was declined
11-24 / called my employer corporate office to get copy of check (they are buying it for me)
11-24 / called C/S, was told accounting depart made error, order would ship today
11-24 / get email saying order canceled due to no stock
    11-24 / called C/S again, now I order G73JW-XN1, 128G SSD and gaming headset.

Now I get to wait even longer.

I would think in this day and age there would be better control over ordering processes and inventory.

Since it is hard to get refund for an international wire transfer, I might pass the chance of getting the G73JH-B1 from GenTechPC, and just get the G73JW from XoticPC. If so, instead of the G73JW-A1, I would like to get the G73JW-XR1, for I am not interested in the bundled mice and backpack. Yet, it would also reduce the manufacturer warranty from two years to one.

My question is, should one year be enough?

    Thanks.

(I chose to pay via wire transfer, thinking that I could save 3% cash discount, which was about $60 USD, and overlooked the bank fees. As both their bank & my bank charged wire transfer fee, which were $35 & $26, I ended up saving nothing.

I was inexperienced, so was that sales advisor, consider that they do lots of oversea orders...)

    @Alisee,

Seems like you have a worse shopping experience than I do.

Did Newegg apologize for the screw up at all? (It was pretty bad that two weeks later you found out it was the fault of their accounting department...)

So far the B1 is just the best. Only thing i did just in case was the Vbios flash as that was the old one. So far no GSOD.

Keyboard seems to work fine. No missing keys. Love the mouse and backpack.

Even temps seem to be OK. Idle is 45-50c and at load i got it to about 75c.

i suggest you get paypal.. it will take 7 days to send the payment but no extra fees... with all this problems , i'd use paypal and save some money... also gentech has $50 off the G73 compared to other places so you save more...

Steam has suddenly stopped working for me. Has anyone else had this issue? It runs in safe mode which makes me think it could be the Realtek drivers, but I updated those when I bought the machine and it has been running fine up until about two weeks ago.

it might be a steam fault... steam might be corrupted... have you tried reinstalling steam? Wait... bad idea if you got a lot of steam games... let me see.... try removing the old realtek drivers, the main one and the ATI HDMI one... than run driver swepper to get rid off all traces of realtek drivers... driver sweeper is a program if u didn't know which gets ridd off ATI , NVDIA and realtek driver leftovers after uninstall.. than go to relatek site , downloads and high definition audio software... download the 2.54 drivers and 2.49 HDMI driver... install the 2.54 driver than the 2.49 ATI HDMI driver so you don't loose HDMI sound.. if this doesn't work , try reinstalling the creative software from Asus support site.. that might be the real issue as creative didn't work with steam but should work with updated realtek driver.. if all that doesn't work , reinstall steam.. its should be a steam fault.

    Hi all,

Been following the thread, there were some very useful stuff posted in here, glad i found this lounge. Aniways, im getting a new lappy this christmas and im 99% certain on the jh B1, personally i had better experience with the ATI than nvid, but then again, the USB 3.0 does attract me. Anyhow, going for the B1, but i live outside of the US so wondering if any of you got links to cheap resellers shipping international? And is the B1 still a continuing product? im really worried in 1 month's time, theres no more B1's T_T. Also, for the battery, since im not gonna use it much (plugged 99%), it is better to use up all the juice and leave it aside or keep it full?

Very eager to place my order and join this family! xD

Let me say, I've been a long time customer of Newegg and this is the first mishap as well as the first time paying by check. Had to pay by check because my employer is buying all this for me, we have really good benefits, we're given $2K every two years to buy a new computer after an initial 2 years of employment. As for apologizing, Yes they did! They also allowed me to go over my original amount since the laptop is no longer in stock. I was slightly disappointed that I would be getting the DVD drive instead of the BD but then after thinking on it a bit, I'm not really looking to watch movies on the laptop. So that is why I choose the G73JW-XN1 and decided to spend the difference upgrading to a 128G SSD and adding the mouse and gaming headset. I've received half my order, the gaming headset and the SSD drive. The mouse I ended up getting off of Amazon. The laptop is scheduled to be delivered Thursday 12-2 :D . First thing I'll be doing with it is creating the restore disks if they are not included and then a fresh install on the SSD with 7 Ultimate.

Also, If anyone is interested, I followed the instructions to get the improvement for SSD by editing the registry on my Fujitsu N6010 with a P4 3.2 and non SSD HD and without changing any game settings in WOW got a 20 FPS increase.

    Alisee,

    Got your laptop already?

I cancelled my order with XoticPC and ordered with GenTechPC, yet GenTechPC has just ran out of stock of the G73JH-B1...

    To all,

I am planning to get the G73JW-XR1, and will be using it at home, as a desktop replacement. For my usage, which warranty should I go with?

    Thanks.

First you need a Blu Ray Drive. Second , you need a software which can play blu ray's.. Asus's PowerDVD software which is free can do so. Otherwise you have to buy cyberlink power DVD or some other software which will cost you $30.

Make sure to update your PowerDVD9, cuz the one that comes already installed is lacking on some updates to play blueray... once you update (free update) your software, you select you region and you're ready to go.

    Good luck! hope it helps
