Suppose its safe to say I can actually join one of these (unless there are people still remembering their meh Lenovo y510's =P). Got the XN1 model, sadly have to wait until Monday since it didn't ship until Thursday (and from New Jersey =/) but it will be worth it hopefully.

Worried about getting one with a power button issue, anyone have an idea on what causes it? Being mine will be home most days, hoping can avoid it going bad later on by some method (other then leaving it on all the time). Wishful thinking probably xD

I have a G53SW-XN1 and was recommended by others to buy a Right Angle Converter, like this one on eBay for $7.95. Is this a good investment? Is there a cheaper or better one elsewhere? Thanks.

Based on the people on this thread, yes it is a good investment.

    Same with this?
    Amazon.com: Right Angle 90 Degree Converter for 5.5 x 2.5mm Connector - LC53: Electronics

    @tsnowdon
The specs above looks similar with the one at electronic bazaar..So probably XN1?

    What's normal GPU temperature?
Should I get a cooling system of some sort? What do you guys recommend in terms of cooling?

RekeHavock : 85/90°c max gpu when gaming,90°c max with furmark (stresstest), if you're above, try to blow in the vents to make the dust go away. ;)

You can also change the thermal paste but it's very difficult coz you have to tear the laptop apart...

    Don't buy a cooler for a g53/g73, it's inefficient!
Most of the fresh air comes from keyboard or the vents just under the screen (barely visible when opened), not from the bottom vents (which are too small anyway). ;)

That's why i can put it on my bed sheets without having the laptop overheating at all. :D

Don't bother with the cooling, it's great, you don't have to do anything other than blowing the dust from times to times, and maybe doing a thermal paste change once a year if you want the top.

    Guys, help me

if i am stuck on this Asus logo screen for more than 30 seconds before it finally boot up to the Windows

what is possibly wrong? this is not G53SW, it's 53SX, but i figure it's the same

all i did is i just installed a new SSD in it, haven't really format it or anything

is it something to do with that?

I know i had the same problem once... Ssd too.
Maybe a new bios flash, default options and/or swapping the disks could help. I don't know how i got rid of it. :/

it's unlikely it's the SSD because it's not even formatted yet

i think i will try and just update BIOS see if it works

    it's weird indeed

Put default options in the bios first, ad swapping the ssd and hdd could help. ^^

Hello, I'm getting the G53SW-A1 again, and the place I'm buying it from doesn't know if they have the new revision or not, and won't let me get a refund if I open it. Does it say anywhere on the box if it is the new revision, or can you only tell by opening it?

I had the power button problem, but now I think its fixed. The only thing i did was unplugging the touch pad. Does that work for you guys? :)

The processor revision, because of the sandy bridge recall.

Yeah, I'm weary after receiving a computer that looked refurbished, so I want to be 100% sure, I hope your right.

    Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forum here for quite a while and just thought I would relate my story, as some may find it of interest.

I had been looking at the G53SW-XN1 for quite a while. That includes all the bad reviews from people who
had the power button issue. Which I think is actually related to a bad touchpad.

This all took place on 7/19/2011.

At that time, these were selling new on Newegg (and elsewhere) for around $ 1,200.00. I did not have that much money to spare
so I started watching the "Open Box" section and they had one for $ 701.00.

You would think that was a big risk, but not really as it was a money back return. They are real good about that. So maybe I was risking the shipping back to Newegg.

So I pulled the trigger and a few days later the notebook arrived in it's full box, but obviously a returned item. It even
had a repair sticker from Asus.

Set it up and pushed the power button. You guessed it. Nothing happened. So I thought about this for a minute and decided to call ASUS. After about 15 minutes discussing the problem, I actually got an RMA # (for repair).

It cost me $23.00 at a pack and ship. Off it went. Approximately 14 business days later (a remarkable turn around time) it was returned. I've seen stories everyhwere about how terrible ASUS support is. You could not prove it by me. In fact, on their site, they have the tools to view the progress of the repair, which I did. Very nice. I still have almost 8 months left on the warranty just in case.

The computer booted right up first time and I set it up. Looks and feels brand new to me. For $ 725.00.

There's more... I decided to add a SSD as the boot drive and bought a Crucial M4 64gb sata III. Initially, there was a problem with the firmware which was eventually resolved via Crucial's website and forum.

    So my entire investment was $701.99 + $23.00 + $134.02 = $859.01. and of course my time.

This computer is a BEAST. It handles anything I through at it and I do CAD House designs and Photoshop and Video.

It has been a couple of months now and going strong.
(Of course the price has come down, naturally!)

I also added the angled power connector as per this forum so add another $ 8.00.

    Regards,

    Gary

Sorry to hear about the trouble you went through. I too can understand what it feels like to receive your new notebook on the first day and have it not power on. ATleast it works perfect now.

can you explain why you think it's due to a bad touchpad? If so, is there a fix we can do?

I bought the same model from newegg new for 800 after rebate. I too had the power button issue on the first day. I sent it back to newegg for replacement. I'm so curious tho why it's happening to so many people? and if anyone knows why it occurs.

There was a topic on a different forum that mentioned this about the touchpad. Also, further research showed that it may be accurate.

After I received the notebook, the details showed Asus replaced a defective "Touchpad Membrane".

I'm not sure about the rules here, but this is the link:
Asus G53Jw G53Sw Problems Issue g53 g53jw-a1 broken - Notebook Help Laptop help troubleshooting

But my case was slightly different as I KNEW (being Open Box) something might be wrong.

In your case, just get it back to Newegg I think is the best thing you can do.

    Regards,

    Gary

I have the Newegg version and never had a power button issue. However, I have always had a touchpad issue. When I first boot it will work fine for a little while and then it gets wacky. The cursor will jump when I go to tap on the pad and it forces me to use the buttons (the dreaded, stiff buttons). So after a short time I cannot tap on the pad for a click or double click action.

I've used the latest drivers and even did a reinstall of everything (using the recovery disks) - didn't fix it. Since the touchpads are directly related to the power button issue, then maybe these things tend to have bad touchpads, rather than bad power buttons. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

just got mine today finally, though it had to come before class (thus no time to play around with it =/). Power button worked first try both times so far, so hoping it stays that way! Still haven't tested it much outside of fiddling with the backlighting (Need to charge the battery, but the adapter for my old computer is hogging the spot until I finish backing up the last of my files on there).

They are kidding about it being heavy though, and that is one hell of a power brick O_O.

It is incredibly quiet though, granted I'm a bit bias considering I've had to run a fan since well the fan on my old one died (and been too lazy to really get it replaced yet). But still loving how quiet it is, and staying cool enough to actually have in your lap.

Hey I was going to upgrade the ram in my laptop, but according to Intel the i7 2630qm only supports 8GB ram, has anyone successfully gone past this limitation? I believe you can, but wanted to verify before I went out and bought another 4GB or such.

Must be a mistake, since the new G74's have 12GB, and the same processor, and every product page says how it supports up to 16GB.

i imported the asus g53sw-a1 into uk. After waiting for 2.5 weeks for it to be delivered, then my worst nightmare. More then half of the screen was full of dead pixels. gud new i m covered by the warranty, bad news the screen is not available in uk or europe, so i have to wait 1 month before they would get it from asia. hopefull i will get my laptop back by mid oct.

I know this is sort of a late reply, but I would highly recommend the CoolerMaster NotePal U3. As of the moment it is 30 dollars on Newegg. I have done mutliple tests with the fans on and off, and have found that at full load running Furmark Stress Test for 15 minutes, my GPU temperatures went from ~90-91C to ~84-85C. I know this is not a huge difference, but I feel somewhat safer having my GPU running 6-7 degrees Celsius cooler. It is also aesthetically pleasing and fits the G53 very well.

Also, even though this topic has been discussed many times, I would like to suggest a backpack for anyone out there who is a new Asus G53 owner or anyone who still has not purchased one for this beast-of-a-laptop. I purchased this backpack at Sam's Club, here is a link:

SwissGear ScanSmart Laptop Backpack - Sam's Club

It is an excellent backpack, and fits the Asus G53 quite well. I owned a backpack of the same kind (this is the new model) for the past 3 years and it served me very well. I have been away in Europe studying for the past 2 years, and it has traveled with me everywhere (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Scotland, to name a few) and has been very sturdy and has never torn or broken in any way (even though I have carried 15 kilos of stuff in it countless times). The new model I purchased 5 months ago, and it is even better than my previous one. Great ergonomic design, very sturdy, and comfortable. I even bought one for my Girlfriend who has a Macbook Pro 15.4 inch, and she loves it!

    ONE more thing :D

I would like to give a short yet concise review of my experience with the Asus G53SW-XN1. I ordered this laptop to replace my Asus G51VX (an amazing laptop to this day), when the G53 arrived, I, like so many, was afraid of the bad reviews (although at the time, there was only 20 or so total reviews on newegg). When I got my laptop I fired it up, and to my delight, everything worked, and has been working ever since. I have not had a single problem with anything on the laptop, and it has ran every single game I have thrown at it with great results (except for Witcher 2).

The following games I played on this laptop @ 1920x1080 @ medium or high settings and have gotten consistently good framerates:

    Deus Ex Human Revolution
    Dead Island
    Crysis 2
    NFS Shift 2
Dragon Age 2 (except DX11 on Highest setting)
    to name a few
(if anyone is interested, on most games I do not run with an overclock, if I deem it necessary to OC, I usually use the stock GTX560 clocks (775/1550 core and shader, respectively)

As far as other components in the laptop, I have tested everything I can think of (burning CD's, DVD's, using bluetooth, keyboard lights, FN keys, USB 2.0/3.0, VGA/HDMI outputs) with the exception of the LAN input. The touchpad in my opinion is amazing, I really enjoy how firm the buttons are, and as far as the 2 finger scrolling, zooming, etc. nothing comes close to Apple in that aspect, but the Asus is not bad. The keyboard has some flex, but it is the same keyboard used since the G50, and doesn't look like it is changing any time soon ;)

Anyways, I am very happy with my purchase of this laptop, and I hope this post can help some owners with decisions about which cooler or backpack to purchase, or soon-to-be owners with a decision to buy this laptop!

Had I known this thread was this active still, I would've posted here first.

I have an ASUS G53SW-XA1. Full 1080p screen. That had a toddler's foot nail it. She tripped, and flipped, and fell. It was very graceless. So I'm in the market for a new one.

    (Alas... Screen, not toddler.)

    Asus' site says:
    Asus PN:18G241560020Q
    PN:AUO B156HW01 V5 (HW:0A)

I've been reading that the V5 is garbage. Thinking of putting a v0 or v7 on it. (Or something even higher. Just not a v5.)

Has anyone replaced their G53SW's screen? I tried taking the panel off but there are no screws on the panel face. It's completely flat. I'm sure I can figure it out myself, I'd just be more comfortable if someone had a guide to use as well.

    Thanks.

Thank you. It has been a rough week. I was searching for variations of "screen replacement." No idea why I didn't search for disassembly.

And since I'm surrounded by other SW owners. Has anyone tried The Witcher 2? For some reason, if I use "Auto-Settings" it puts me to low. When I try to go any higher, or even custom controls, I get all sorts of graphical problems. I'd be interested to know what settings people have been running at because I can't seem to find the sweet spot.

I have a friend who has a G73SW and he's able to go on Ultra High with Ubersampling off. Seems odd I can't come anywhere near that. I'm also interested on how far we can push this puppy with Battlefield 3.

as of now not even on GTX 580M SLI could you set ubersampling to ON, its a feature for future generations. There is a thread discussing Witcher 2 performance in the ASUS gaming section, search there and use the Kingpinzero's profile, I finished the game using that settings (with overclock obviously). Take a little trial and error and you can put some settings to ultra and the game is still playable.

Here are my The Witcher 2 Settings, and the game runs around 35-45 FPS:

    Resolution: 1600x900
    Texture downscaling: None

This is rediculous, this specific G53SW model doesn't have the latest NVidia driver(285.57 or sumthin) to play the BF3 beta...????? You can't download it off the nvidia website and the Asus Support Download website only has the 267driver available... THIS SUCKS becuz i keep getting kicked out of the
    beta... FAIL.

Can anyone help me with this, maybe some little tweak/trick idk??? or am I better off just selling this laptop... :( :(

Doesn't that Laptop2Go patch make Optimus unavailable?

Quite sure Amazon had the XA1 listed as having Optimus (though it doesn't anymore.)

Not that I care, really. I just had a G51 and the 53 seems to have about 5x the battery life, I guess I Had just assumed it was using Optimus, *Shrug*

Perhaps you need some codecs : Try to install the latest K-lite codec pack, choose "lots of stuff without player" as your profile. ;)

To those who add 16gb :
Notice that you should lose the dual channel when putting over 8gb (Not to say it's completely useless. =p )
