A small advice: seems that with latest 275.33 and gtx460/560m the OSD set to Vector 3D mode doesnt work.
Vector 2D mode works perfecly fine as well as Raster, but Raster have the habit to not clear the framebuffer/viewport therefore it freezes benchmark programs a bit.
So test directly with Vector 2D osd ;)

Does anyone know the name of the clock generator for the G53SW? Apparently it is found on the motherboard.
I need it for SetFSB, and I'm not really comfortable with unscrewing my brand new laptop just yet :p

Here's a direct quote of what's asked for:
    Edit:
Blah, didn't support the chipset, or something like that.. So just ignore this post then. :)

Ok so far, I can report no issues. Updated to SP1, and installed the Latest MSI Afterburner Beta and everything is running smooth. We'll see in a few days from now how it runs. But my report for now is everything is ok.

Hey, I would recommend getting a SATA 3 drive just because it will be faster and your laptop supports it.

The main ones that people seem to be getting these days is the Intel 510, Crucial M4 and OCZ Vertex 3. All are great drives and I would recommend just trying to get one that has a sale or rebate on it.

My configuration came with two seagate momentus xt...hell,I never thought that an hybrid drive would be this faster!
Literally dirt 3 takes 5 second to load a stage, dirt 2 only 3 seconds...I can't imagine how fast would be a proper SSD, but if I take in account the performance it has+500gb of space I woulnt be more happy than this!

@dragon: that's good, we can say the issue is fixed then. Glad that is working ok ;)

SATA III Drives would be best for the system as they are much faster, but also don't forget Samsung's SSD's are pretty good too. I managed to get mine on sale. It's all up to how much you have to spend, if you have the extra cash go with a 128GB SATA III SSD for speed and utilizing the laptops better speeds. If not, go with what was stated above, but also keep in mind of the Samsung 470's. Regardless of what you choose, from the above mentioned, you will be very happy with it, I'm sure.

Will I started having issues a few days into my update before, so I'm going to wait a few more days before saying for sure that my issue is fixed. So far so good though, so your probably right. I'll report in in a few days more on if I have any issues.

Hello, new G53SW owner here, picking my notebook up tomorrow.

My configuration is an european model. It has the 1080p screen, 500gb momentus XT, 4gb ram and an i5-2410M. I would have gotten the i7-2630QM if they sold it where I live, but they don't.

    I have some questions:

    1. I have 8gb of compatible RAM from another unused laptop sitting around doing nothing. Can I install this without voiding my warranty?

    2. I have an additional 500gb momentus XT in my current laptop. Can I put this in my G53SW without voiding my warranty?
If so, I plan to install W7Pro as soon as I get it in order to run software RAID-0 for awesome performance until SSD's become big and cheap. I don't care about data safety, I keep all my important stuff backed up on multiple devices. Good idea?

    3. Is the included WLAN/BT card still problematic with the newest drivers, and if so, can I replace it with an Intel 6230 unit without voiding my warranty?

    4. Is the i5 that much worse than the i7 for gaming? I mostly play strategy games and FPS.

Note about the warranty stuff: My computes are insured against pretty much everything, so even if i void my warranty with upgrades it doesn't really matter, but it's nice to not pay deductibles on manufacturing defects over the first two years.

Would love input from you guys if you have the time.

I know that the you CAN upgrade the RAM and install the secondary HDD into the G53 without voiding the warranty, im not too sure about the rest of you questions...

On another note, does anyone know if there is currently a problem with the backlight on the keyboard of a G53SW-XN1? because i just got my laptop today and everytime i click the light on button the only buttons that light on is the very top buttons (The light switch, energysaver/turbo/multimedia, and the screen option adjustments), i cant seem to keep my keyboard lit up, only when i reboot the system will it light up, but after wards it turns off again.

The button you are pressing is to turn on or off ALL of the lights on the laptop. In order to turn on keyboard backlighting, press FN key + F4 to turn the lights on, it has 3 different brightness settings, depending on how many times you press FN + F4, to turn the keyboard backlighting off press FN + F3, or the button that you have been pressing. That should do it!

On another note, what kind of temps are you guys getting on your GPU @ full load (ie. FURMARK or Crysis 2 @ high settings etc.), I am getting around 88-90 Celsius on FURMARK after a 10 minute run on stock GPU clocks, and around 93-94 Celsius overclocked @ 800/1600/1480 (Core/Shader/Memory). With the GTX 460m overclocked @ those settings I am getting 3Dmark Vantage GPU scores around 8500, which is 100 less than a GTX 470m, and 400 more than the GTX 560m!!! I also forgot to mention, that I own the Asus G53SW-XN1 model but upgraded the RAM to 8GB. Thanks! :D

If you would like to compare "synthetic" benchmarks of your I5 CPU and the I7 CPU you are asking about, refer to:

    Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The I7 2620Qm sits @ spot 15 and the I5 2410m sits on spot 35, meaning both of the processors are extremely fast (~500 processors listed!). The Cinebench Single core benchmark is the same on both processors (this is what most games use, 1 or 2 cores), therefore in those games performance will be nearly identical, now the Cinebench Multi benchmark shows the I7 having almost a double score (8000 vs 14000). This is due to the additional cores (2 actual, 2 threaded), and this will significantly affect hyperthreaded games (not that many out there that use all cores @ full load) as well as hyperthreaded applications; in this case, there will be a noticeable difference in performance. To put simply, in most cases you will not notice a difference, and in most cases, as with most of the sandy bridge CPU's, the processor is almost never the bottleneck, the Graphics card is. I also love FPS games and play Fear 3, TF2, Fallout NV, BRINK, Portal 2 and all of those games use 1 core @ about 85-100% load, and the rest at a minimal 10-15% load, therefore you will notice only slight differences in gameplay between the I5 and I7. Anyways, sorry about the lengthy explanation, but hope it helps. :D

Thanks guys :D I guess the i5 will be fine for a few years then and with my hybrid XT raid-0 this thing will be pretty responsive. Once the warranty expires I can upgrade to an i7-2630QM and get the larger AC adapter, possibly extending performance life a few years. By then more apps/games should fully utilize multicore processors as well I think.

I'll see for myself if the atheros card is usable. I do have an 6230 I can put in if it's unacceptably bad. On campus in some auditoriums you really want the most powerful and stable card. I know the laptop is heavy, but I'm used to lugging around 50lbs of tools when I'm working so it doesn't really matter to me.

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with installing Asus's Latest VGA Drivers. Mine does this: I will start installing, Windows Pops up with a "This driver is not digitally signed". I tell it to go ahead anyhow, it then continues installing, my screen blanks out, comes back on, then blanks out for indefinitely. After leaving it this way for about an hour, (just to make sure something wasn't slowly installing) I finally force shutdown the laptop and turn it back on. Nothing bad happened and it's running, but I'm stuck at stock drivers. I wish to try an update as the drivers will randomly crash. It could be a few days before the next crash and recovery, or an hour. Which makes this unacceptable for playing games. As if they crash in the middle of gameplay so does my game. Please any help is better then nothing. Oh yeah, I'm running Win 7 Home Premium x64 w/ SP1

Posting from my G53SW. Just one slight problem. When i opened the notebook, there was no RAM slot under the keyboard, but the solder pads for the RAM slot was there. Anyway i put a 4GB stick in the slot under the bottom cover, but I still only have 4GB of RAM.. this is strange..

I tried that, every time the install errors out. It seems to recognize the gpu, but won't install for some reason. I'll try to get a screenshot of it next time I try it. Can't now though as I am using the laptop for some stuff.

Ok I copied the inf into Display.Driver and get the error. I tell it to overwrite and all that. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. If no one else can figure what I am doing wrong maybe if someone could rar/ zip up their's and put it somewhere for me to download it and try. Otherwise I am stuck until Asus decides to update the Graphics drivers :(

The G53SW with the dual core processors have two SODIMM slots, the quad core models have four. As for the memory addition, I would try to make sure the RAM module is inserted all the way and is locked in completely.

Yeah i did.. i was sure i edited my post yesterday but today it's gone. But you are right, i had to use brutal force to get the DIMM into the slot :) Working fine now. Two Momentus XT's in RAID0 load maps very very fast, it's very nice :)

Also, there are solder pads for an additional DIMM under the keyboard, so if i ever get bored i can install another slot.

One more thing. The default monitor color profile is very cold / blue, when i try the other splendid presets the theather mode is a little better but not 100%. Does anyone have a good color profile for this monitor?

Edit: Hmm, the included atheros card doesn't support 300mbps 11n.. I've been scratching my head all day trying to figure out what's wrong with my router, turns out the card is at fault. What a piece of crap.. 10Mb/s transfer speed is so 1998

dragonwolf/// it s better to upload your system with 275.33 but for this driver you should use modified inf which you can find laptopvideo2go.com safe overclock for me 825/1650/1600 more than 825 core possible for benchmarks but same can create problem during game play such as crysis 2 and dirt 3 , but 825 perfectly fine in 3D "1366*768" max temp around 85C and I can say it s quite normal till 90C

Okay so all my keys worked perfectly for one day. Today:

Fn+F10 (mute) cycles power presets (just like turbo mode) first two times i press it, then mutes.

Fn+F11/F12 (audio up/down) randomly adjusts brightness and lowers / raises volume, independent of which key i actually press.

Fn+F5/F6 randomly adjusts either brightness or mutes/unmutes volume.

Fn+F2 (WLAN/BT switch) increases keyboard brightness. Keyboard brightness keys randomly adjust monitor brightness..

Reinstalling KB Filter & ATKACPI seems to have fixed it. Maybe some windows update screwed with my keyboard.

    Ok, Finally uploaded :)
Pls see below link which I put it filesonic.

Download 275.33_win7x64.zip for free on Filesonic.com

Previously I prepared this for my G53SW/GTX 460M 1.5 GB
This one is included with modified inf file so you dont need to make anything just unzip somewhere and start setup and just wait for the update anyway you will see all detail during installation I mean what was the previous version and what is the new one and it is better to select clean installation.
Just reminder, with 275.33 you can overclock GPU by using MSI Afterburner as 850/1700/1600 these are the max values which I observed on net so far.

Right now mine is 825/1650/1600 and working perfect but most of the users also cant pass over 800 core so it depends your luck :) so far I tried till 845 but after 825 is not stable for me as I noticed. And dont push the memory clock more than 10 after 1450 ;) and core clock more then 5 after 775 ;)

    Hope will be helpful :)

Successful update, thanks for the help! I don't know what I did wrong, but this time it worked wonderfully! I did a clean install as you stated and after a few reboots it was up and running fully. MSI Afterburner has 2 profiles saved:
    Profile 1: Core 775/ Shader 1550/ Memory 1250
    Profile 2: Core 800/ Shader 1600/ Memory 1550

Profile 1 is equal to the 560M GTX from my understanding. And profile 2 was the highest I felt comfortable going. From your numbers it looks like I could have gone a little higher, but probably won't. I should be safe with these numbers. I don't really use the overclock much yet, haven't needed to. But it's nice to know where my max settings stand and where others have pushed it. Anyhow, I'm now updated to 275.33 thanks to luckysword. Thanks man! +Rep :)

I have a serious problem and I guess I'll have to RMA it.

My screen stays black and won't come on at all. Boots fine into windows and everything but no screen. Very frustrating.

Loose cord? Can I fix or would it void warranty?

dragonwolf/// your welcome, it s good to hear that you did it, and you right your profile 1 is equal to GTX 560M, but if you take PhysX from GPU to CPU from Nvidia control panel " set PhysX configuration " you will notice more power because CPU is really strong, mine also on CPU, just for your info.

Not at my computer right now, but I will for sure give that a try. Wouldn't it also help the gpu run a little cooler as it is no longer doing graphics and PhysX? The cpu may run a little hotter with the extra load, but I am not worried about it. The i7 runs cool. Anyhow thanks for the tip, I'll do that. :)

Absolutely right, take load from GPU and give it to the CPU. GPU load and heat will be decreased and CPU will not be effected much, it s quite stable

Hello folks, I'm the proud owner of a G53SW as of several weeks ago. It was a bit of a hassle to get (I had to send two back before I got one that worked), but overall I'm really pleased with the machine, the cooling system is phenomenal.

One little problem I'm having however - I uninstalled THX TruStudio because I saw no use for it other than making my sound seem like it's coming through a cell phone speaker. So now my audio from the built in speakers is unaltered, but using headphones still applies the TruStudio equalizer settings, which makes headphones practically unusable for music listening. I couldn't find any way to reinstall through the e-driver or anything, if that would even be part of the solution.

Anyone experienced this, or have any ideas?

I did the change up and while I haven't noticed a difference (I probably won't either way which is good) it may have to be due to the fact that I haven't run any PhysX games. (Anyone care to share a few titles for me to try?) I have noticed though that my gpu has cooled off a few degrees and my cpu hasn't heated up much if any. So far nice tip, and again, thanks for sharing the driver update, I really appreciated it. I just wish I knew what I was doing wrong on modifying my download, Oh well.

I never had problems with my THX, in fact, if set to the proper setting, I've found that it has made my sound better. (IE using Built-in speakers while using your laptop speakers.) The only issue I don't like is it dosn't automatically change depending on if there are headphones in the jack. You could have also set it to not boot with the laptop. Thus it wouldn't take over.

Go to: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS G53SW

And find the "OTHERS" click it and you should find: Creative THX_MUI driver

Download that using Global and then you can fix everything and then uninstall or fix to not boot. You may have to select the OS before doing the above. Select Windows 7 64-bit. Hope this helps.

just bought my G53SW a few days ago and unfortunately the unit is defect (got a vertical line of dead pixel ran across the screen right out of box) so I RMA'd it to ASUS.

Have anyone here have a problem with the laptop worse enough to send it back to Asus? If yes then can I ask how long do you have to wait to receive a replacement/ get your notebook fixed?

I am having a very similar problem. Some games I can run just great, but with others it can be alot more difficult. Some games I play like gta 4 and bad company two have frequent and sudden framerate drops that make the game virtually unplayable on any setting. It's driving me bonkers! Have you come across a possible solution? I've been looking everywhere!

It's mentioned further back in the forum, you need to use Throttlestop:

ThrottleStop - Performance Adjustment Tool for Core 2 / Core i CPUs

It'll prevent the cpu from downclocking. All you need to do is run it once, then close it and usually the effect take place until you restart your machine. If you need more help, read further back in the forum, somewhere between the first and page 30. I can't remember exactly.

Hey guys, do any of you have problems with the G53Sw's Wifi acting up every 5-10 minutes? I have a feeling it has something to do with Atheros but I'm not quite sure. Searched the net for quite some time now and couldn't really get an answer on the How-To's. Any ideas?

try to reinstall driver, better yet do a fresh install of windows. If all fail, try call asus for resolution or buy a intel 6230 wifi chip.

I've also given up on the Atheros wireless card in my SW, and replaced it with an Intel wireless card.

For something like $40 shipped it's really not worth the hassle in running the stock card.

Im planning to buy a new laptop and im thinking about the ASUS G53SW-XA2. How is it? How's the build quality, performance, and battery life?
Has anyone tried starcraft 2 on it?
Edit: Also, what is the wireless card for this computer?

Duffed, had a similar issue, unfortunately couldn't resolve it with driver updates, but did a full restore to factory settings and it totally resolved the problem. Works great now. You can boot into the recovery partition by holding F9 at startup...don't remember whether I restored to 1 or 2 partitions, though....maybe someone else can clear that up for you.

Have the G53SW-NX1 with 6GB RAM. I've already had to use the recover disks to redo the drive (can't afford to get a copy of Win7 right now) because of blue screens. Since I did that I thought everything was fine, but there must be some kind of RAM issue. When I play a hi-def video it will show jagged edges when there is camera movement. At first I thought it was a problem with my camera, but found out it is not - the videos are fine. When I move a window I will get jagged edges too. I also installed the latest VGA driver from the Asus site (like they said to do).

Mate, you can download a vanilla copy of Win7 legally. Use the key on the bottom of your laptop.

True, but the upshot is that you get rid of all the bloatware.

They are a series of recovery disks (5 or 6) that I burned from the recovery disk program that was included with the software. It doesn't allow you to choose to only put Windows on it - the bloatware is automatically installed. Anyway, I would like to not have to do that again. I was curious if anyone else had a problem like this. It would seem that the video drivers would be the problem, but I haven't been able to have any luck there.

Hi I'm new to these boards and was reading this thread and I'm planning to order my new laptop once paypal processes.
I'm planning to do the same in Canada and I can't wait to try it out.
    ASUS G53SW-XA2, Gaming Notebook - Intel Core i5-2410M, 15.6" Full HD (1920x1080) LED-backlit, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M 1.5GB, DVD-RW, Wireless 802.11b/g/n, USB 3.0, 2.0M Webcam, Illuminated Keyboard, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit,
I haven't heard of anyone else getting that version so I don't know what differences to expect.

I was wondering about the power cord because I've heard that it is very problematic and can break inside the machine. Should I definitely get a new power cord? If so, which one?

    Is this sufficient?
