*How to do a clean Windows install with your Asus recovery disk*
    - insert Asus recovery disk to install (recover) your windows
    - When asked for Ultilities disk just put it in then eject it after few seconds
    - restart your computer ! You have completely clean with no bloatware NOW
    - to install drivers : insert the ultilities disk again choose whatever you want :D
    sorry for my bad english

Yes, that will work IF you have the single ASUS OS recovery disk, but if you made your disks from A1Recovery utility, you will get it just as the factory originally installed with all the bloatware and scamware.

Not true...ASUS stopped shipping their laptops in the US with disks back in March. Unless you buy one from your reseller you are left to make your own set (6 disks) from the included A1Recovery utility.

Also Australian Models of the G51Jx-A1 do not recieve such disks either.

Hey Fendora, In what way did you mod your case? You didnt happen to use one of the G50 backplates did you?

    Good luck rexrzer727! :p
(Yeah the GT"X" 260m is slightly better than the GT"S" 360m, but runs definitely hotter (75w tdp for the GTX260, 38w tdp for the 360m).
I think you could easily catch a GTX260 by overclocking the 360, without having heat issues.

    It'll be a good challenge. :p

MrGMCD : Yes I cut holes into the G50 backplates.

    Here's the cooling mod :
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/411871-asus-g51-cooling-mod.html
You cut a hole in the fake subwoofer and put a grill on it. (You can gain 5/10°c )

    Here's the copper mod :
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/414147-grab-copper-drill-now.html
Using thermal tape (of good quality) you put small copper blocks on the heatpipes. It'll help spreading the heat. (I did not do it, but you can expect a 3/7°c gain)

And here's the undervolting mod :
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/412244-g50vt-undervolting-9800m-gs.html

(Using nibitor and nvflash, and gpu-z to extract your bios). A little more complicated but very efficient.

    Hope it'll help. ;)

Hi guys, I own this beautiful machine, the G51JX -X3 and I have to say, when typing on this keyboard, I make a lot of typos. Some letters just dont register when I press it for some reason. Do any of you guys have this problem too? Also, my LCD display sometimes shut off and turns black by itself when I am using my computer. It is weird and when that happens, the computer is still on but the display is off and is pitch black. Can somebody help me fill me with some insight on the things I'm experiencing? Thank you.

Thanks Fendora. I had a look at that first thread before your posting and thats where I got the idea. Kondor999's mod looks really well finished. You would never know its not stock.

Im not so game as to begin playing with voltages with this lappy. But its interesting how much a percentage drop in voltage can affect the temps.

And also the copper mod looks pretty neat too. But im most interested in the backplate mod. So far have been unlucky in looking for a G50 backplate to fit the G51. Everywhere is out of stock. Oh well.
    Someday. :p

Yeah it is, but there is a simpler way to do it, just get a nice 80mm fan grill (or is it 70? I dont' remember, just take the measures).
Here's what I did (not my picture though) :
    Imageshack - 04112009227.jpg
    Imageshack - 04112009226.jpg

I used the same fan grill. ;)
Result is impressive, my friends are jealous. (Plus they only have dells with 8600mgt. :p )

Undervolt has been the most efficient for me, but i was lucky to be able to overclock and undervolt. ;)

For the backplate you can use a g51's one, there are some with the fake vent (not like the one of the g60 or g51jx).

Truly an awesome card to play cod4 at 800x600 with :)

Man you make my problem seem so small compared to your :(
Well Good Luck with getting it fixed...

And just a question.... for ya Rex, you know how some people have problems with installing all the drivers from the ASUS Website for the laptop.... is it possible that when applied with the disc, it sort of forces them on therefore causing them to have problems say.... a bsod every once and awhile?
Its just a theory but I might just wipe my computer and install Windows 7 Professional (needed for school) and then only install what drivers are accepted on my laptop (Of course this probably means i won't have turbo mode seeing how the driver wont install along with bluetooth and Camera) but I don't use that stuff.... and just maybe that might stop the bluescreens...
Because if you ask me I find it pretty odd that we can't get all the drivers on from the website due to compatability issues....

Anyway wish me luck in my experiment the BSOD i get is prety random and only happens after playing a few hours of games (P.S has only happened in STarcraft 2, and League of LEgends after games never during one but after just finishing one) from what i remember i usually get Bad_Pool_Caller meaning I have faulty software, never seen a hardware failure report

    Rex,

Somehow my G51JX-A1 don't have the turbo boost options in P4G, even I did a clean install.

PS: Nvm, it appears back again.

You'll still have turbo. The processor changes dynamically depending on what is asked of it. For example while gaming (sc2[two core], mafia[quad]) I haven't had to toggle turbo/extreme at all and they run just fine.

I've also had problems using p4g with win7's wallpaper slideshow if you see my post a page or two back...

Hi everybody, as I've taken a much needed "BREAK" from the laptop and have been computing on my desktops, which are fail-safe and faster than SIN on the Bible itself when you are talking about a server with 24GB RAM and a 4.2Ghz Core i7 CPU with Turbo Boost to boot besides the overclocking, an EVGA Classified E-760 motherboard, twin EVGA GTX-285 SuperClocked video cards in SLI mode-2GB DDR5 VRAM, Creative Sound Titanium Fatal1ty Sound Card, DLink DDW-556 PCI-Express WiFi 450MB/sec Card, and to top it all off Twin RAID's, a RAID 0 Boot Volume/2TB and a 4TB RAID 5 "Storage and Apps" Volume (3TB), all driven by an Areca 1680IX-8 PCI-Express SAS to eSATA/SATA RAID Controller (No I/O on the Classified bus but for video VRAM), and the RAM is 24GB DDR3 1600Mhz G.Skill "Purple Wonders" 6 x 4GB DIMMS all over clocked to 1692Mhz (fire on brother, fire on!)...in short, I have been enjoying my gaming, my apps, and my desktop 10,000% on this troubled weekend with my laptop, where the RAM has gone bad, the SSD died and I needed some RELIEF!

Sorry about that post, but that is my Big Baby PC, the King of the Hill here, and it ROCKS! Can you imagine playing COD:WAW @ 130FPS!!?? Hah-Hah!

OK, back to basics, sorry for the diversion...

What happened to the SSD? Short and sweet, according to OCZ Tech Support, the Sandforce Controller SSD can go into "permanent Lockdown Mode" whereby they do NOT respond to normal I/O inputs, and they will BSOD your laptop until the ENDS OF TIME until the service dept unlocks them, rescues the code from their sorry selves, and they then use that Lockdown Coding to help make New Firmware for future SSD's with Sandforce and OCZ being the benefactors, me being the Guinea Pig! THANKS Sandforce and OCZ!

So I am screwed there, and they are sending me a NEW SSD on the come, and I have to send in this sorry POS SSD here or face 2x retribution on my credit card (2 X full price on two SSD's!), and all will be well at some point....about 3-5 business days from today, they tell me this AM! :D

Now the RAM issues, they were never ending also, and confusing as Hell, so I took each module out and tested it in my UL30VT-X1, which is now SOLD and GONE by the way, to a nice guy friend of mine from New York, USA, so I can't have THAT one in my signature anymore....anyway I used it as the Test Mule for my RAM problems, and it figured out that the new RAM from the Saturday Delivery was BuNKOLA RAM! It works fine up to about 690Mhz, and then BAM! It will BSOD my laptop also, how about that!

It doesn't work worth a DAMN over 690Mhz, which is where the overclocking in our computers places the RAM (707-720Mhz overclocked=1410-1440Mhz real time Mhz) so that will NOT compute with RAM that can take the overclocking like my Corsair 4GB SODIMMs from the single shipments, as they are superior to the Matched DIMMs from Amazon.com and Corsair that they charge more $$$ JuJu for! Go figure that out!

Now I am waiting on another shipment of RAM from Amazon.com, they were kind enough to send me the last of the single modules, 2 x 4GB SODIMMS, along with another set of RAM from Corsair, which is a matched set of SODIMMs from Corsair itself, so I will have 4 x 4G SODIMMs on Wednesday to pick and choose from, and whatever works I am keeping, and what doesn't I am sending back, no charge, no foul, no harm!

Presently I am letting my G51 laptop just do Folding@Home with the stupid Seagate 7200RPM 2.5" HD in play, with minimal program installed, but I will get around to installing all programs later in the week after I get the RAM issues solved 100% by Friday, hopefully, maybe Thursday if all goes easy on Rex.

That is the whole unexpurgated enchilada from California, USA today, this 6th day of September by our Lord's Grace, and I ain't tellin' what I've been doing to keep up with the Jones's this weekend, but I've had me a good one!

I will get back to this place on Thursday/Friday hopefully, and working in full speed ahead with all programs installed in the G51 once again, as I am going to do a full Cloning or the Seagate HD to the new OCZ Sandforce SSD which will be coming middle of next week they tell me, and that will conclude the Experiment In Terror That I Have Just Been Through!

I don't even have the energy to go back for emoticons right now, but that's the whole story, and you would NOT have liked to have gone through what I just did...it was NO FUN and BRUTAL on the brain cells!

Good Luck to everybody with problems, I will be back later in the week...sorry about that, but I need to go to work now and that is the story of today, and tomorrow, and I have no mercy from my boss over any of this, as he OWNs the place! Hah-Hah! ;) :p

    Later Gents...

    Hey Guys,

I've been reading up on this laptop and I like it because of the ports, hackintosh capability, affordable, and the graphics capabilities.

But I'm a film student getting into 3ds Max and I want to check out Premiere Pro CS5. So I want to know if anyone has experience with this laptop in those programs. I know you can 'hack' the GTS 360m to run a bit better in Premiere Pro but...I'm not really computer illiterate I just need more info, sorry it's just a lot of money and I want to buy the best product.

Heck who buys things anymore ;)

Yes this computer is quite capable of running 3ds Max and all CS5 programs. Be sure you have turbo boost enabled and your close to an outlet plug. It is significantly faster when you have full power and everything runs great. Just be sure your organizing all your film files so they run more efficiently when its trying to organize them

Hey guys, just got my G51JX-X5 last week. I removed all the bloatware, installed some apps (Firefox, Steam, etc) and upgraded my drivers. Other than that I didn't change anything. Everything was working fine until I noticed a couple of things this week:

    1) Yesterday when I tried to power on the laptop it would get to the windows 7 loading screen but then it would beep and then shut its self off. Turned it on again and the same thing happened. Tried Express Gate and it loaded without any problems but then tried to get into Windows and it stilled didn't work :( So I left it off for a couple of hours hoping it would fix itself and it did... I don't know why but everything worked fine after waiting a couple of hours. Has anyone experienced this before?

    2) Was playing Portal and about 30 minutes into it the video started stuttering (not a FPS drop) and every time I'd hit a key I'd hear a beep. The beeps sounded like they were coming from the OS. The problem went away after I let it cool down and restarted Portal. Anyone know what caused it?

    Thanks!

I am glad to see that Jack has his new laptop, finally, so good riddance to the old one and welcome back, Jack! Keep it at BIOS v.206 and you'll be fine, just don't expect miracles out of laptop, even I don't do that....and you'll be doing just great with a machine that can perform well, to a point of course, and without BSOD's unless stupid things are being done, attempted or practiced. :frown:

Well, I had a load of trouble getting things figured out with my laptop, but such as it is I can live with it now. Good Riddance to 16GB RAM! The memory controller of the laptop is just not up to carrying such a load, albeit mis-matched or matched RAM it does not matter...it just cannot handle such things @ 100% Load and 100% throttle (CPU and RAM use), just not made to be a desktop, that is all she wrote for those thoughts and ideas.

I had a long session with a nice Corsair engineer last night, late, named John by the way, and we talked and figured out this situation 100% between the two of us, and here's the whole spiel and don't bear with me if you don't want to because it is going to be a bit of a long post...fair warning given! :p

The machine is FINE with 12GB RAM, it likes it a bunch, and the memory controller is particularly good with this amount because of two things: the numbers, and the quantity of the RAM vs controller layout. By "the numbers" I mean that all Core i7 CPU's are meant to run Dual Channel or Triple Channel RAM, and they favor Triple Channel setup, which is precisely what this laptop does not have...it's got dual channel getup, two banks of RAM modules, two per bank, 4 modules total, not 6 or 12 or 24, as those numbers go...multiples of the number 6 are preferred by the controller of the CPU it turns out...just accept that and we'll be fine with the rest of my thoughts here.

I work with a few Core i7 CPU's, both at my work and at my home "hobby" of Folding@Home and having some hellaciously productive Core i7 920-series machines doing 24/7 grunt work of Folding@Home, 100% load, never pausing, never getting a break, always working, and I think I know a bit about how the CPU works with a memory load and the particulars of that load also. Let that be said, and if you can accept that we can proceed to disassemble this RAM dilemma that this laptop has presently.

The RAM preference for any Core i7 CPU, be it mobile or series based for desktops, is multiples of 6, and with the number 12 we have two times six, correct? OK, that being said, this laptop is tremendously comfortable with 12GB RAM, and it will do ANYTHING you ask it to do with 12GB RAM, but if you change that multiple to 16 which is NOT a multiple of six, then you are in trouble, and so is the memory controller in the G51JX-A1. :spinny:

With 16GB RAM we get panics in the RAM modules themselves, in the controller interface, and with the CPU to boot, so it's a big numerical mess up and it cannot be fixed unless Asus were to concoct a new BIOS (far fetched that would be, since they cannot even write simple BIOS without ruining BlueTooth modules!) that preferred 16GB and even then you'd be fighting City Hall in the CPU and RAM departments, so it's just a losing proposition, unfortunately. The engineer John and I saw eye to eye on all the above by the way, just for your interest, and we both agree about the 'multiple of six' theory with Core i7 CPU's, and we both have seen success with many, many machines of various types and configurations using 6, 12, 18, 24 etc GB of RAM...always multiples of six, come Hell or High Water!

So what happened to my situation with this laptop is I had Amazon.com send me 4 modules last night, and I got them and figured out that it didn't matter what configuration I used, with the 4 modules, because they are essentially the same RAM no matter if they are grouped in 8GB or 4GB DIMM lots, (two or single modules), and I got the same panic attacks, BSOD's, and various terrible performing situations with FAH quitting, memory quitting, or other bad things with 16GB on board, that it really didn't matter what I tried I got the same results, types of results anyway...and I was screwed from the get-go with 16GB RAM in any configuration. :nah:

But man, you install 12GB and this puppy is HAPPY Camping! This thing rocks with 12GB RAM, and you are wasting your $$$ if you try to MAKE it work with 16GB RAM, because you will fail miserably and the bottom line is they should put a limit of 12GB RAM on the laptops, but they won't--so go figure! I have proved this to be the case, and it was not easy to do, but I did do it last night and this afternoon, and there is no doubt in my mind that 12GB RAM is the magic number for this laptop.

Now it will run with 16GB RAM, but it is NOT happy with it! And you will get panic attacks, BSOD's, and the RAM will fail, and high stress programs will fail, and you will generally be messed up from Square No.1, and those are my findings, and you all can take it or leave it, I really don't care! :chatterbox:

I don't know who is the bigger God's Green Earth Fools when it comes down to figuring these things out, but Asus should have its head examined for putting an artificial "RAM capacity" of 16GB RAM on these laptops! It just doesn't work! 12GB YES YES YES! But 16GB, NO NO NO! They are not desktops and they do NOT have the ability to recover like a big desktop setup can do given a bad circumstance like this...I mean I can make a desktop survive all kinds of bad setups! But not this little laptop...it is impossible to just flaunt yourself onto the laptop and prevail with 16GB RAM, because it does NOT work if you stress test or use the laptop for any type of heavy duty assignment. RAM will fail, CPU will fail, memory controller will fail, it all fails with 16GB RAM! :GEEK:

Those of you who maybe were wanting to do what I attempted to do, don't do it! Just be happy with 12GB and the laptop will be happy with it also! I thank you for your time today, I am sorry about the long-winded post...I could have said a LOT more believe me I could have, but I limited myself to just a couple thoughts and didn't get into RAM science and theory of CPU's, pretty much just left things simple today. :)

You have to trust me with my expertise and knowledge about this Core i7 CPU situation because I have a TON of knowledge about the CPU's and memory with them, trust me I do...and it goes very deep, so believe me when I wrote what just did! :notworthy:

I am trying to save everybody a big headache, because 16GB RAM does not work with this laptop! 12GB YES! 16GB NO! NO NO NO! :nah: :nah: :nah:

OK, now on to bigger and better fish fry's and may we all not suffer any fate like trying to make a round hole fit a square shovel head! I like to keep things simple basically, and if you can dig that, then I am your friend for life if you'll have me...and it is a good thing to have a friend with a lot of knowledge when it comes to CPU's, memory, and the science of constructing complex computer systems, which is what I can do. ;)

Have a nice evening and afternoon, everybody, and I'll try to come back here later tonight and answer any questions if people have any. These are fine laptops, yes they are, but they have their limits and I have found them for you all! If there is anything to be said for Asus it is this: they make reasonable machines that do pretty good things, basically, but don't ask for the moon because you won't get anything close to it.

I just noticed that my P4G Hybrid doesn't have a "turbo boost" option under the High Performance options. Is my software bugged?

Also, what's the best way I can monitor for many CPUs are firing and at what clock speed at any given time?

Try uninstalling P4g and reinstalling it, Rex recommand v1.25 i suggest it also because it works...
I also had this turbo problem but I fixed it after a reinstall

And for the operating programs I suggest HWMonitor, Speedfan, and CPU Z

HwMonitor and CPU Z is made by cpuid

You can have a VM and/or a REAL 2nd operating system, if you so choose, and the Core i7 CPU and 12GB or so RAM is particularly suited to doing just that, Jack...let me illustrate the situation and you'll get it quickly...

We have a utility called Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite 2010, and I want you to get that if you can because it's inexpensive, and it's teats on toast for the GUI and hardware/software interface for discs, operating system, backup, any sort of partitioning (it is REALLLLly good at that craft, can make virtually any type of Dynamic or static partition and/or in a space within a space, aka a VM or alternative OS perhaps) it does, and it also can create a separate "secret partition" that "hides" from the rest of the OS with a different operating system (totally foreign, like Linux, or Mac OS X, Windows XP Pro 64-bit, etc etc), and it can set up multiple VM's also within an operating system!

I love Paragon utilities, they are my faves, much more so than Acronis or any other *brand name*, the Paragon suites deliver a lot of punch and Judy where the others are all fluff and circumstance! Paragon is Da Kine! There is also PAT for you to learn about, Paragon Alignment Tool, which is something I use all the time at work to help with partitioning RAIDs and complex volumes and SSD's especially, keeps the block sectors optimized and Aligned 100% even after strenuous or change-inducing maintenance or moving things about, like with HDM Suite 2010, things you can do with it...PAT is the Godsend!

So there's a couple things for you to chew on while learning the crafts of mechanics and IT with the computer interface of choice...you will dig them a bunch!

You need to score Everest Ultimate Utility v. 5.5.x.xx, and get on board with the best diagnostic and monitoring tool that we have, save for hardware monitoring itself. Also there's CPU-Z for software monitoring the CPU, memory banks, any sort of changes therein as things progress in a build, and you get those utilities here:

Everest--- EVEREST Ultimate Edition - PC Diagnostics | Lavalys.com

CPU-Z--- CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

That will take care of that for you, anything else? :D

Seriously though, it always helps to have a couple good, in fact grand utilities in the hip pocket for posterity and any sort of diagnostics or monitoring...I have Everest on every PC I own or maintain, and CPU-Z on all the Core i7 machines and Xeon and servers that I maintain also, it is really KUHL software!

Good questions tonight, and I am happy to please with the answers...

    I have a G51JX-X5 and it came with the DDR3 1333 ram.

I'm also getting a little artifacting occasionally on my task bar (maybe once or twice a day of constant usage) at default GPU clocks. Should I be concerned?

A little artifacting? Please explain, as that is usually a bad thing to have going for a lappy, especially one with a big GPU and nice screen like this one, the Au Optronics job with the xlnt viewing angles.

It can be a precursor to a bad cable in the hardware, dirty GPU ribbon cable in the hinges, something like that, but usually such a thing is insignificant if the GPU is performing optimally.

Have you done a Clean Install yet? That might also stop such things happening as they can also be from software corruption of various sorts, and banding within the OS, which can happen with a fragmented Registry, my favorite topic here! Use a good Registry Cleaner on the Registry and see if that helps initially, I'd advise if you don't use one now (shame, shame!)...See my posts for sources, as I have a couple, Registry Mechanic and Glary Registry Cleaner (free, and good!).

If you come up with 500 Registry errors some could well be the Taskbar entries, often is, and that could also account for such things happening. I hope I've covered most of the obvious crunches for such a thing, but I wouldn't count out a bad cable or twisted ribbon cable for the screen...if it continues after you Clean and get the Registry in order that is.

Hope that helps some, I am shootin' in the dark about now, dead tired...

Your control panel got corrupted, plain and simple explanation...so don't freak out about it, just deal with it and reinstall a fresh CP after you uninstall the old one 100% and restart the computer...definitely RESTART! If possible try and use v1.25 of the P4G CP, it's the one that seems to work best, the most stable version for sure.

I've actually never seen the CP vanish its features like that, but it can happen with a line of code being out of sequence somehow and BAM! It's gone, the feaures first, then the whole CP will eventually vanish completely. It's not an easy thing to understand but it can happen, especially in Windows OS! Mac OS X I would find it hard to fathom something like that happening, but Windows it is more conceivable and possible.

Good luck, just reinstall the CP and all should be good after a RESTART!

The G51Jx-A1 runs CS5 AWESOMELY! Seriously, I was impressed at the speeds at which it rendered and played back quick previews in after effects and now that CS5 and its components are required to be run in 64bit, your 6 gigs of ram really get a good workout, and it handles it fine.

Although I havent tried premier pro yet, Im guessing it will be fine too. Photoshop also works nice and smoothly.

If there is a way to flash the 360m to run as if it were a quaddro this would be an even better performance boost.

I have seen this with my space bar. I think it's because the SB is pretty short, and I just catch the end of it, but it still goes all the way down and no space shows up on the screen. I think I just have to get used to typing further to the left (1st notebook w/ a numeric keypad, so I might be a bit right).

    Sorry I can't help w/ the screen.

I don't think this will run triple channel ram. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to use triple channel, you use sets of 3 DIMMs, which is why you get multiples of 6... Nobody will put in 1GB DIMMs, so you're looking at 2GBx3, 4GBx3 or 8GBx3, which as even numbers will always be multiples of 6. (I guess you could go 1GBx3, but you're not going 3GBx3!)

The i7 720QM processor only uses 2 memory channels ( Check Intel here)

I'm sorry I can't give a logical reason for why the machine would work w/ 12GB and not 16GB, but given the CPU is only supposed to support 8GB (see that Intel doc above), maybe we're just lucky? I know I had an Alienware whose BIOS was updated to allow 4GB (from 2GB - was the m5550), but that was before Intel pulled the memory controller into the CPU. Besides - another BIOS update might kill our wifi or USB ports :)eek :)

I went with the memory you suggested, but only 2 DIMMs, so I'm at 4GBx2 + 2GBx2 for a total of 12GB and I agree 100%, the machine loves it.

I saw somebody ask about a CPU monitor - this is the one I use. It's called "All CPU Meter". Yes, it shows 8 cores, and we know there are only 4, but the i7 has 2 threads per core, so it looks like 8 to the OS. I also like to keep GPU Observer up. Images of both posted below:

I still haven't done that clean install w/ the Windows 7 ISOs I linked earlier, but it's all now on a bootable USB key, so as soon as I get some time I"ll take a crack at it.

Great support in here guys - I just love it.

I have two more questions (related to the audio)!

1- Do all the G51Jx come with the Realtek ALC663? Because I've been having trouble with audiodg.exe (very high cpu usage on one core) and I've already tried a lot of things (checking the options to disable all audio enhancements/soundblaster enhancements, updating the audio driver from both asus and realtek sites, uninstalling the Sound Blaster Audigy HD software and even doing a clean install of Windows), but none of those worked. :(

2- Is it normal that the audio quality of the built-in mic is really bad? I mean, when I'm using skype with the built-in mic my friends usually say that either my voice sounds really weird (like robotic) or they can't hear it / they hear it with a lot of background noise. I've tried using those options of Realtek Audio Manager, but they didn't seem to help much.

[edit] I feel a bit bad for being here only asking for help and not being able to help anyone, but this is my first laptop and I don't really know much about it yet. :frown:

Sound Control Issues and How to FIX them!

Have you enabled Loudness Equalization in the Sound Control Panel? If not go to Control Panels>Speakers>Properties>Enhancements....when you open up the Enhanements section you can check off a number of different Sound Checks, ie Equalizer, Pitch Shirt, Virtual Surround etc....don't check those!
Check the one at the bottom of that short list, called Loudness Equalization!
Exit the Control Panel, and hit "Apply" to the section when you exit. THAT little trick will improve your sound and the microphone about 200% or more, and it brings fullness to the sound of the spakers and gives you much, much higher volume.

I don't know why Windows has that defeated at Default settings but they do, and that is one thing I ALWAYS check on my Windows machines when I have reset things, or modified things, or gone to the Factory defaults for one reason or another...always go back and check that box for the Loudness Equalization feature, as that fixes about 90% of the sound issues with our speakers, and with other laptops and desktops as well. This is my insider trick for everybody tonight, because if your sound is muffled or 1/2-volume or worse, try that adjustment and see if it fixes the problem, as it does with my laptops!

If your speakers and microphone are muted you need to go into those sound settings in the Control Panel and find out why! There will be a graphic reason why you cannot do something in that Control Panel I just had you visit...the key is that CP plain Jane Simpleton, and if you get that right along with the RealTek Sound Manager you can actually have acceptable sound in a laptop with the Windows logo on it! Bar none! Try it, you'll believe after you experience a system that has been liberated from that anomaly!

There are not many other tricks and treats as far as Windows Sound goes, but start out there and take it from me you will be amazed at HOW MUCH bETTER your speakers sound if you do that Loudness Equalization deal...it works! Simplistic as it may be, it is very effecitve at restoring sound and microphone capability to machines that have failed for one reason or another.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their laptops this week, becuase I have learned to love mine now that I've fixed all the gremlins that were afflicting the Systems of import, and you can do the same with your version, trust me you can! Good Luck to everybody having sound problems, becuase it could be a LOT worse than it is...just follow the simple directions I gave earlier in this email to access your product's equalizer, the speakers interface, all of it, and see it that doesn't FIX most all sound issues for you!

Good Luck, as I know you'll most likely need it. Good Riddance to VISTA and everything that went with the equated system, dinosaur such as it was!

I hope you are all having a great weekend away from school, your families, and are sort of grinding it out by youselves and having a blast! Have Fun, ON ME!

Later, rexrzer aka Wavey DAvey, and a half-dozen other Net names...I don't care what they are I disown all affiliations! Hah-Hah! Have a great weekend and don't let anything stop you from enjoying your Asus branbd computers!

These might have a flaw or two, but I can't find those flaws, trust me I cannot, so somebody somewhere is doing something right as rain!

Have a good one, and most of all Have Fun!

Hmm it seems when using EVGA Precision and Nvid Driver 258, the driver sometimes has to reset itself after changing something in Precision...
Might try downgrading to 197 to see if that fixes that.

Jack, you should know by now that the answer about the BIOS updates is simple: if there's no good reason to do such a thing, why do it in the 1st place? If a laptop is working fine there's no reason to do a BIOS update, none whatsoever other than just being bored perhaps, or needing something to do that is "risky and sometimes "Fatal" to boot...BIOS updating is a scary thing to do to a notebook, and I am certainly a clear and shining example of that up front! Then again I've done updates for not such good reasons, and I've never yet paid the price like the Asus updates can make you pay...big time pay day it turns out, just HUGE with a potential loss of key components amongst the mix of results that you can get from a simple BIOS update with these products...and it simply should NOT be like that, but with Asus it is, so YMMV and be forewarned it is deadly serious to do such a thing, and you can play with your notebook's very life and condition at stake!

I have no idea why Asus places such a huge penalty on their BIOS updates, nor do I know why or how Asus continues to offer up BIOS updates that are frankly just terrible, simply awful BIOS updates that have no business being there in the 1st place, they just don't belong up on the 'Net and yet there they are, along with BAD BIOS itself, to boot! So go figure! It is tragically real and we need to understand the pitfalls 100% rather than risk our notebook's very lives on the process, the very functioning of our notebooks, and it shouldn't be like this but it IS, and don't you forget it for one little second!

First, it seems like Asus doesn't know HOW to write proper BIOS updates, nor do they know how to instruct their customers to use it, and yet the BIOS updating is right there in front of us, ready to ruin our notebooks at every possible whim or fancy, a tragedy ready to strike you right in the guts, like BAM, WHAM, GONE! Should it BE like this? Not on your life it shouldn't be like this, but it IS like this and we'd best be aware of the risks of these BIOS updates, and don't take it slow, and easy when we discuss these topics, we need to take it fast, and 100% SERIOUS when we discuss or interact with the thoughts of updating our Asus notebook's BIOS!!

You know a pigeon is dead whether struck down by lightning or hit by a car, either way the result is the same, so there's no chance to redeem ourselves when asking about the pigeon's death, it's simply a matter of circumstance and the bird is DEAD, plain Jane Simpleton DEAD as a doornail, never to fly again... If I accidentally hit the bird while driving, a pure accident plain and simple without fault of my own, we could argue that the bird was destined for death, not just dead by circumstances beyond our control.

I fail to see why or how such a fact makes it all right however, to make that bird's final days better by any scope of the imagination, just because we didn't mean to kill it, or tried to avoid the bird and hit it anyway, all sort of disclaimers to the good of our humanity whilst still the bird's death was imminent and unfortunately necessary! We drove, the bird flew along, and then it was dead! That's the pure truth of the matter, and had we not driven perhaps the bird would have hit a bicyclist or maybe gotten killed by a stone thrown by a child's errant hand, who knows? Results are the same however, and the bird is gone, gone gone!

Cause, effect, result! One, two three, it's a gone and done deal in this case, there's a dead pigeon in the road where before he was flying high, far and wide, enjoying the freedom of the sky bar none! Am I sorry about it, and could it have been prevented? I guess so! I could have said my prayers and given providence a shot in the arm, and By God that pigeon could well be alive and well right now, instead of officially, permanently DEAD! But dead the little pigeon is, and I am responsible for it, and I have no excuse but for opportunity itself being what it is and was, a victim just as I was a victim when I drove over the bird!

I am sorry that it happened no doubt, but still the bird is dead dead and more dead the more I talk about it to myself or my neighbors! I have no excuse for doing it, totally 100% to blame, and By God that's the story and there is no redemption from this pigeon kill! Poor bird, he's a dead and gone, and I am to blame, and that is the end of the story! I am sorry, I am at fault, and he is dead, dead, dead! Am I to blame? Of course I am, and there's no salvation there to choose from, and no armistice to sign to make it all more better, a significant Road Kill no more!

Have I run this into the ground and stopped and stomped it to death now, dead readers, yes I have done just that, and I don't doubt that I am guilty as charged, 100% so, guilty and guilty as charged! I have no defense, and I have no immunity here, I am guilty, guilty as charged without any doubt in my mind, body, or soul!

That is quite a few errors in the Registry, but not unheard of if you never did such a thing before! Good for you doing it, and keep it up once a week, or more please, and things will continue to be better along with having a simply
    better performing notebook!

    You're welcome, of course!

If you don't have a hardware issue of some sort, it is possible that the controls are just so *out of kilter* with Default settings that you should perhaps consider putting everything AT DEFAULT SETTINGS and leaving well enough alone, how about that? Load Defaults in BIOS, that would be F9 and Save and Quit, and see if that helps the situation out somewhat, ok? I frankly do not know what else to suggest in your behalf because if you fiddle around with something enough you'll probably just break it! Not just put it out of kilter! That's the No.1 thing to do then, by George, and that is Load Defaults in BIOS and see if that brings this mess to its knees and fixes the problems!

Good Luck, and sorry you're having such troubles, not worth it, right?

Methinks your notebook deserves better treatment, so give it that option ok?

I probably should've rephrased my earlier question....
Whats the difference between bios 208 and bios 206? I understand that I have no reason to update at the moment seeing how I've had no problems which I am glad.... But wats the point in releasing these newer bios updates... they must do something that is beneficial to the user...
