Oh wow, I went to see Expendables, and just as a test i left Grand Theft Auto IV running from approx 8:30 pm to 11:30pm... when i got bk the laptop was turned off so obviously either my mum pressed and held the button or... a g blue screen happened and it shut down...

On top of that Im looking at this fricken warranty card, and I have found out that I got to send this ing card in before I can even use my warranty... I don't have enough time before school to get this done...

Hi, I just purchased g51jx-x3 last week, updated to bios v207 and no bsod / heat problem so far. However, the screen sometimes flicker (like once per day randomly), it shows some random artifacts on the screen in like 1 or 2 second then disappear, does anyone have this problem? Is this an indicator of defective lcd? Thanks in advance :)

p.s: I use the exact same vga driver for my last laptop which do not have this problem

@aurora35, that was the problem I had when I was using 204 BIOS, and since updating the BIOS to any higher version fixed the problem. It has got nothing to do with the display drivers.

@aurora35, I have BIOS 206 and this happens sometimes (maybe once a week). Never during a game, just MS word generally... Interesting but not annoying considering it doesn't effect anything else.

    My GPU driver is 258.96

@nfshp253, weird, i'm using v207 since I got some bsod last week

@PrivateReid, Yea, same problem as me, never happen on game / movie, only when i use notepad++ or netbean, and I use that GPU driver as well, maybe the driver is the cause?

    @aurora35

The driver isn't the cause because I just downgraded to 197.16, and within half an hour I got it again in MS Publisher =|

Lol, I almost downgraded mine until I see your post xD

And one more thing I realize, this flickering usually happen when I'm typing (MS word, netbean) and never happen when browsing or copying stuff etc (until now that is). This is VERY weird ==

Maybe try contacting ASUS. What a weird problem. I'm lucky mine was fixed by updating the BIOS. My driver is also 258.96. And now I'm getting (although rarely) the error of the graphics driver crashing and being recovered. Not sure what problem this is or if it is only specific to 258.96, since my other Toshiba laptop with the same GPU and driver has the same problem. (But also in the 187 series drivers on that one).

    Rex,
What a horrible thing mate. I hope your new G51Jx will come soon. (And I hope ASUS doesn't upgrade you to another type of laptop so we'd loose you in this owners thread).

I posted a warning on page 1 in the BIOS and updates section.

    Hi,

I've had my laptop for nearly a month now. I ordered the G51JX-X1 from newegg, although in system info it lists it as a g60jx but with the specs for the 51jx-x1. It was working just fine until last night when it BSOD'd when I was just browsing and using pandora. It just did it again when I was closing out of a video I had streaming in chrome.

In both cases the BCCode was 24. I'm using a Zalman cooling pad and have proper ventilation, although in neither case was the laptop under stress given the situation. My system info says I have SMBios version 2.6, which is what came stock on the laptop.

Any ideas for a fix? I bought this laptop because I am leaving the country in two weeks and would like a dependable laptop for daily use and gaming, and if I have to pay ridiculous shipping to have it RMA'd at some point I'd rather just save myself the time and get a MSI gx740-079.

Naw mate, my laptop has 207 and its fine bluetooth does work...
But if your worried that much then you can rollback to 206... there isn't really much of a difference

Ah right and about my BSODS Im getting my laptop exchanged for another G51Jx-A1, because even when upgrading to neweer bios didnt help, doing a clean install didnt help and doing a Factory Install didnt help

So now Im getting a brand spankin new one within the week, sry for my constant ing on page 50

Ah right and... Do any of you guys know of any stores in Canada where you can get stickers... im not taking about small ones I mean ones designed for the bac k of your laptop, my reason is im going to school in septembe and i dont realy want to walk around with 3 lit lights on the bk o my laptop not to mention a glowing REPUBLIC OF GAMERS xD

And some of you guys said your getting flickering screen? when in certain programs... theres no doubt its a problem with your laptop, if you want a clean install might fix the problem but if you dont think it will send it in on the ASUS warranty and have them look at it... from the sounds of it this doesn't even sound like a major problem so if you want just leave it be

I was about to flash my G51JX-A1 to BIOS v207, until I saw this. Really sad to hear about your circumstance, hope your G51JX-A1 get back from Asus and working again.

I was unable to find any documentation stating that the G51JX-A1 does not or has disabled the long horizontal light underneath the Asus Logo. Does anyone know if this laptop has this? If so how do I turn it on?

I have seen a couple posts like this so I thought to respond now rather than later: if your G51JX-A1/X1/X2/X5 (specifically these models with the Core i7 720QM/nVidia GTS-360M rather than other combinations) has survived the BIOS v.207 update without any BlueTooth Module failure or problems, then you can rest assured that v.BIOS 207 is OK with your particular laptop and it is OPTIONAL to downgrade to BIOS v.206.

IN ADDITION I might add that Asus Tech Support has yet to remove said BIOS from the Support/Drivers web site, so your guess is as good as mine is about the BlueTooth Module failures, as reported to you in my case, and by Asus Tech Support's reporting to me about other failures like mine on the day that it happened (Friday, August 13, 2010, when I called in my failure and tech support Supervisor "Sadiq" told me he had personally handled 3 other cases just like mine, and that the v.207 BIOS would be pulled off the web site).

If my case is unusual or out of the ordinary for BIOS v.207 it is one thing, in fact that it happened at all with attribution by Tech Support it is entirely at odds with leaving BIOS v.207 up on the web site at this time. But then again it wouldn't be the 1st time that Asus has been "at odds with itself" over BIOS updating or drivers/utilities/software failing on some laptops, while being totally aok fine on others! I suggested to Sadiq last Friday that maybe my situation was an anomaly (only a single occurrence), and it was he who volunteered that he had personally seen 3 other instances of the problem with BlueTooth being rendered inoperative by applying this v.207 BIOS...so go figure!

My own thinking is to be conservative and stick with the proven, known good v.206 BIOS and leave well enough alone, just don't update to v.207 at all, but YMMV, and experience has already proven that some have done the BIOS update to v.207 without consequence. In fact my report has been the only one in this owner's group of BlueTooth failure, so go figure that one too!

Perhaps others were not using BlueTooth actively like I was at the time of the update, for all I know this has been the case. Please rethink your BIOS update, those of you who have NOT had BlueTooth failures, and ask yourselves if BlueTooth was "On" and "Active" when the BIOS Flash happened...my guess is that all of you had BlueTooth turned "Off" or inactive when the BIOS flash happened. In my case the BlueTooth was "On" and active with my V470 Logitech Travel Mouse/Notebook Mouse working and "On" when I flashed the BIOS, and this may/may not have bearing on the BIOS flash resulting in BlueTooth failure (both Module and motherboard interface).

I don't know what to think right now, frankly, but rather I can simply reply to circumstance and tell anyone reading this that if you have not updated to BIOS v.207 to NOT DO IT at this time, just stick with v.206 until further notice, or until Asus updates BIOS v.207 with a subsequent BIOS update that is proven harmless to BlueTooth and any other system in the G51JX series of laptops. For all I know Asus could have taken down the bad version of BIOS v.207 and replaced it with another version, you know what I am saying? Who knows what has happened with the BIOS v.207!

All I know is that I flashed my BIOS using EZ Flash in BIOS, ie NOT SOFTWARE BIOS FLASHING, and it bricked my BlueTooth Module and motherboard interface--both are being replaced. I didn't have a chance to get to FedEx on Saturday, and my notebook wasn't sent in until this afternoon, so I expect to get my notebook back by Friday if I am lucky, 1st of next week if it takes an extra day or two to repair my notebook, best case scenario I can think of...if all goes well in Tech Support up at Fremont, CA, Asus Tech Support headquarters.

I just feel a little sick in my stomach anytime I think about this situation, however, it still strikes me as absurd that a BIOS update would render BlueTooth inoperative in my laptop. BlueTooth would have been, by default, turned off by any System restart, you'd think, and would not have been active or "On" during a BIOS EZ Flash. I really don't know what to think about my laptop...if others are not having the same problem then it could have been just a fluke with my BIOS updating. Then again I have to ask myself why Sadiq would tell me about 3 other cases on Friday alone, same problem? Hmmmmmm?

Just be careful nice people, that is all I can tell you. I'd stick with BIOS v.206 no matter what anyone told me, at this point, if I were somebody with a perfectly good working laptop, thinking about updating my BIOS...there really isn't any reason to do such a thing if your G51 is working fine right now, is there?

I'll report here as soon as I receive my G51JX-A1 from Fremont, Asus Tech Support headquarters, and I have every reason to think that they will do a bang-up job on my laptop, just as they fixed my UL30VT laptop up in record time, with perfectly xlnt results--they returned a laptop to me that was not only fixed 100%, but one that was also cleaned up better than new, packed and boxed carefully, and shipped back to me FedEx Red Label Overnight shipping...so far Asus Tech Support has been good to me, and I expect more of the same.

Thanks for all the concern also, it's nice to read that others have support for me and what happened, and honestly I plan on not going anywhere soon, janvandongen! I'm not trying to showboat, or steal the headlines, or make everybody's v.207 experience a bad one if it's not been bad for you so far...just be careful, and unless there's a dang good reason it's most likely best to leave your G51JX laptop BIOS @ v.206 for now, that's my best advice for all of you.

rexrzer727, thank you for the informative reply.

According to my understanding of your post, is it correct to assume that models not listed in your reply (i.e. X3) are not negatively affected by the update to BIOS v.207?

I can only speak to those who own the laptops with the Core i7 720QM CPU/nVidia GTS-360M with regards to any update of the BIOS. I don't feel qualified to talk about the other CPU'd G51's that have a different motherboard/CPU and share the GPU with the G51JX-A1 laptop, frankly, as they are a whole 'nother machine in my book...they may share the LCD, and GPU but that's where the similarity ends--and it has everything to do with not having a similar machine of my own. :)

Hi there johnksss, welcome to the group. If you are planning on getting one of the G51JX-A1's with the Core i7 CPU the answer is yes, you can overclock the CPU just like you can overclock the GPU...we are lucky enough to have a variable FSB in this model, and a co-processor/IC generator that can take different QPI ratios. My guess is you can overclock the CPU without any great penalty in terms of heat up to 1.8-2.0Ghz, but after that it's gonna get a little *hot* inside there. The GPU and CPU share a common all-copper heat sink, and when one heats up the other tends to do the same...there's only one little, bitty 4500RPM fan to boot.

I assume you want to OC all 4 Cores like we do with the Core i7 920's and other CPU's over at the EVGA.com motherboard web pages...where you and I have had some casual discussions about this and that...back in 2009, but then again my memory is bad so you'll have to excuse me if I don't recall the exact context. BTW I hope you get one, as these are fantastic laptops!

Maybe you can start the G51JX-A1 Overclocking Club! :D

man, i thought that was you. lol
i7 stability thread. and something about memory between 6gb and 12gb..lol

im glad to see you over here as well. giving up a mountain full of knowledge!!

man, that's great news...i may have to put this one on my list of possibilities.
and you already know im not over clocking for the long all, but to over clock mobile i7 cpu's. got cooling already inline for this.! -40 to be exact..lol

so my next question is...how high have you gotten it up too?
to make a long story short..my list is
    g73
    m17x
    msi 470
    and now this one.

no clevos this round...they tend to never have cpu over clocking.

Yes, it's me, still hangin', and still bangin'! Honestly? I haven't overclocked this one much, but some of the guys with the previous model are using Abosan's Set FSB software to overclock it to the BeJesus. ;) There's a thread about it in the Asus Lounges somewhere, I just can't be bothered to dig it up right now, but you can find it, it's there...

That's right about the 6-12GB RAM stuff with the Core i7 920 CPU's--I seemed to have started a "trend there," Hah! I haven't been back to those hallowed places since last year, but yes, I am still running my No.1 PC server @ 4.2Ghz on AIR w/12GB G. Skill RAM, and it is as stable as the California sun, I'm happy to say. :spinny:

Good to see you are still doin' the wiggle, and keepin' busy!

I'm the new owner of a G51JX-X5 from PowerNotebooks.com and I just wanted to post my experiences with doing fresh install on this system. First, this thread and the Asus G51JX Owners Lounge were invaluable - thanks for all of the great info guys! I have to say that 95% of the installation went as briefed. Here are a few wrinkles I encountered with my specific system:

-The first thing I did out of the box was install BIOS 2.07 via the BIOS itself (before I heard about some of the problems with it). Everything worked out just fine and my bluetooth is functioning.

-The card reader driver downloaded from the ASUS website didn't work (Ricoh Win7 32/64 61016) but the one on the enclosed disc did (same version). Don't ask me why, I don't know!

-Power4 Gear 1.22 came with this system and is the only version offered on the enclosed disc and at the ASUS download site for this specific computer. Based on what I read here, I found and downloaded version 1.25. However, version 1.25 WOULD NOT install on this system - there is some kind of incompatiblity (I think with the turbo memory thing). Anyway, I went back and installed version 1.22 and it works just fine - your mileage may vary. If anyone else has got version 1.25 to install on a G51JX-X5 I would be interested to know if you were using BIOS 2.06 or 2.07.

    - Now on to what was the most frustrating and time consuming part - the webcam. For the life of me, I could not get this thing to work. I tried all three driver versions offered for this specfic computer at the ASUS website: Windows 7-64 versions of the Chicony 7129/7146 615200270 and the Suyin one, as well as the Chicony driver on the enclosed disc (also version 615200270). Absolutely nothing would work. I would uninstall the camera and driver and try installing each driver and the installation failed every single time. Even Windows 7 itself could not locate and install a proper driver saying that the driver was incompatible with this system. I finally located my camera's PID (USB\VID_04F2&PID_B106&MI00 or USB\VID_04F2&PID_B106&REV_8915&MI00) and with the help of PowerNotebooks.com was given a link to ALL of the camera drivers offered on the ASUS website that I could try and match it with.

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

This is the driver that finally worked for me: Chicony_CNF_9060_WIN7_64_615200290. Be advised that this driver IS NOT listed under this specific computer's camera driver section. That is what made things so difficult. What was offered - didn't work, and what was not - did. I'm wondering if it might have had something to do with installing BIOS version 2.07. I don't know. All I care is that I finally got this sucker working!

    Best of luck!

Hi, I was wondering if I should get the A1 or the X1 because of the mouse and backpack. Is the mouse and the backpack worth it for the higher price and is the 9-cell or 12-cell battery upgrade really worth it too? I'm worried about the loud fans and high temps when going portable with this laptop but from what I'm reading so far, it seems like a great buy.

I had these exact same problems, I also couldn't get the CardReader to install and i also couldn't get the bluetooth to install, it only installed with the driver disc...
And I also couldn't get turbo to work on P4G until I upgraded the bios to 207... and reinstalled p4g1.25...
And the camera thing that happened to me to, until I wiped the computerr again and went with the driver on the disc,..
I found it odd that we both got these problems and that no one else has reported these issues...
We could possibl have a defective product (Mine is because I get bluescreen when playing) getting a new one in approx 3 days
    i have the G51Jx-A1

It is good to know that "95%" of my Clean Install guide works to this day with brand new Asus G51JX Core i7 computers, as things could change in the hardware dept ever so slightly, in actual fact--with new computers--and this can lead to driver incompatibility issues. Specifically concentrating on these three "problem areas" that iwa washi had, I have these comments:

    1) Ricoh Card Reader Driver--there seems to be an issue with the driver on the web site (Support--Downloads), so going with the one off the Utility and Drivers/Software Disc from Asus is the way to go, as those always work with any G51JX Core i7 laptop, barring any changes at the factory level...ie newer computers may have a slightly "evolved" or "different" Card Reader vs early editions, it's good to know that the utility's driver is still OK. What is of interest is that the web site and the driver/utility disc list the same, exact driver (numerical listing), but the web site's version is "off" somehow, so go figure that one out!

For the Ricoh Card Reader I would recommend using the driver/utility disc's version on new machines--based on this report it seems that the current disc driver works fine with the Ricoh Card Reader.

    2) P4G Control Panel--This is very interesting! With my G51JX-A1 P4G v1.25 works a treat, without any installation issues whatsoever, and I do have Turbo and Extreme Turbo settings available just like with v.1.22--it works with v.206/207 BIOS (both)--so I don't know how to react to this situation here. I guess that new machines may have a slightly different CPU ID or there is some "evolution" of the CPU and associated hardware to where only v.1.22 is the one that works? It doesn't really matter, as long as some driver works and you have stability and CP functionality.

For P4G I recommend that new computers use v1.22 off the driver/utility disc if v1.25 won't install for some reason, as long as you have 100% functionality with Turbo/Extreme Turbo etc. Try v1.25 1st though, as it is the most stable and trouble-free P4G to date, bar none.

    3) Chicony 2.0MP Web/Utility Camera--We seem to have a universal difficulty with this driver, and it is beyond my scope to figure out where to start about it, not to mention where to finish! In my case I used a driver from the utility/driver disc, as there are two (2) of them there with the word "Chicony" in their description, and one is for a "2.0MP" camera while the other is for a lesser camera if I recall correctly. I remember this well because I tried it first, just a wild guess on my part, and it stuck! Worked perfect from the get-go and I never looked back, and I was thankful for that.

This driver that you sourced for your camera? HOW did you figure out it worked, iwa washi? Did you actually go through the list of drivers in that long, long list of Chicony drivers and try them all out? If you did that there's no telling which one worked because you didn't uninstall each and every driver when it failed, did you, (there are parts and pieces of each driver package that will remain as "lingering participles" when a driver install fails) so who knows what driver is actually IN iwa washi's computer?

If THAT is the case, if he tried each and every "Chicony" driver from that long, long list then the one he indicated "worked" may or may not be the correct driver for these notebooks, generically speaking that is. If he painstakingly went about installing, and then uninstalling each and every driver he tried (which I cannot imagine anybody doing) then that IS the correct driver he listed, for current G51JX-A1 notebooks generically speaking.

For the 2.0MP Web Cam I recommend either the driver off the utility/driver disc with the "2.0MP" listing in its title, or anything off the Support Web Site that works, as there's nothing but confusion about this driver, universally speaking. I do NOT recommend going down that list of Chicony drivers that is in the URL in the above post-- because if you try them all out you will have a hodge-podge of drivers installed, and you'll never know which one actually works, not to mention which one you actually have IN your computer!

If those are the issues encountered by a Clean Install, using my guide from this thread, on a current issue G51JX computer...then we are doing pretty darn good up to now. That pleases me a bunch! :)

I am also pleased to read that most members here are doing a Clean Install because that makes for a better computer overall, and better experience with the notebook, so good for you nice people! I go through this ritual with each and every new computer I buy, and I believe in doing it for many reasons, but to each his own...I'm just glad that it's being done.

Nice report its good to know that other people have been having troubles with these drivers.... because honestly I was alittle worried when I did my clean install and I couldn't get them all on... but that doesn't really mattter anymore because I'm exchanging this one for another due to (Numerous Blue screens in games) even after clean install... My guess is The Graphics card is defective...

Anyway hopefully my new one won't have any bluescreens, and if i have anymore driver problems I'll make sure to consult you guys :)

Update to Asus Tech Support and RMA on my G51JX-A1

My "Good Luck" with Asus Tech Support apparently has run out, and I am having one of those "Nightmare on Elm Street" Tech Support sessions with the RMA on my G51JX-A1...and I mean it could NOT be more screwed up than it is right now apparently. :(

Never let it be said that a position of authority and responsibility is meant for every person on this earth either, as it took a Supervisor at Asus to start this mess and right now it continues...briefly what happened to my RMA is that the Supervisor "Sadiq" who created my RMA last Friday the 13th assigned the serial number for my UL30VT-X1 to the RMA for my G51JX-A1 somehow (probably just made an honest mistake and looked up my records at Asus and picked the *wrong notebook serial number* when he was filling out my paperwork), and that was the start of it all.

Yesterday I received a telephone call from Asus in Fremont, CA, telephone number was a local number 510-678-XXXX, and a nice lady asked me if I was who I am, and that they were "looking for me" regarding the RMA on my notebook. She explained that the serial number on the RMA didn't match the serial number of the notebook in the box, and wondered how that happened?
I explained that I had nothing to do with "filling in the blanks" on the Asus paperwork/records at Asus Central in Taiwan, I mean "How could I have anything to do with it?" I asked her...and she told me that she would straighten out the paperwork there in Fremont, CA, so they could proceed with the repair of my notebook.

That was yesterday at about 11AM, the call was to my iPhone 4 while I was at work, and I didn't have a chance to check up on things until a few minutes ago today, or so I attempted to check up on things! This is "one of those days" at Asus! I have been on hold for some 1.5 hours so far, and have gotten absolutely NOWHERE with respect to nailing down the status and/or progress of the repair of my notebook. What happens is I'll get a "live person" on the line, and ask for a Supervisor, and that person will attempt to connect me to a Supervisor's line, but the line just rings and rings and rings ad finitum, over and over again, and nobody answers! How about them apples?

I started calling the moment I got home from work, and it's now about 7:30PM PST and I am pissed! The steam is slowly rising out of my ears and covering my vision and the more my vision is covered the more pissed I get, I mean this is damn near unexcusable for Customer Service! How/Why should Asus be putting people on hold for 45 minutes in the 1st place is beyond me, and then when you get a "live person" they don't connect you to anything at all...the phone just rings and rings and nothing else happens, and you are forced to decide to stay on line with the phone ringing or hang up, and I have hung up twice now so far...at 7 minutes of ringing, and then 12 minutes of ringing, and nothing happening!

I will probably attempt to contact them after dinner, once again, but so far no luck at all nailing down the status of my G51 repair or even communicating with a Supervisor...not good JuJu for Asus!!

If Apple were to keep me on hold for 45 minutes I would know what to do, who to contact, but with Asus there is nothing to do but try, and try again...just crazy! NOW I know how/why people get irritated with Asus Tech Support, I guess if this is any indication of how they treat customers calling in for status or updates on their computer repair.

Oh, also, when I try to check online for status I get this: "We recommend you contact your reseller or nearest ASUS Service Center.
Note: Due to internal process, the repair status of your delivered machine would be available on the next day of your delivery. System Can't Find Records of your inquiry!"

So altogether I have nothing but disdain and no respect whatsoever for the Asus telephone system, and Customer Service on the telephone. They shouldn't be giving people the run-around like they are giving me tonight, and they shouldn't be keeping people on hold for 45 minutes or longer either...both things are inexcusable and without rational basis with respect to CS.

I am going to find someone in authority to talk to tonight, even if it takes me hours to find that person, and then I'll report back here and tell you what I discovered about my computer's repair, and also about Asus Tech Support's Customer Service...

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, I take issue with the above statements. Please don't mis-quote me, add non-existent details to what I actually did, and thereby mislead people who could potentially be helped.

    1. I DID NOT try and install every driver on that list, where did I say that?

    2. Of course I started out using ONLY the driver that was on the disc and the ones that were on the ASUS download site for my SPECIFIC COMPUTER. On each attempt the driver would FAIL to install. Despite what the above individual tries to infer, I DID uninstall all traces of each failed driver installation, remove all traces of the camera, and reboot the computer between attempts.

    3. Now once again, just to make sure everyone clearly understands what I DID do: I found the PID to my INDIVIDUAL camera, and then SEARCHED the list of camera drivers provided by the link to MATCH my camera's SPECIFIC PID to a SPECIFIC DRIVER. By this process, I came up with two or three matches, one of which appeared to be the logical updated progression of the Chicony drivers we all know and love. That is the driver I tried and that is the driver that worked.

I stand by the procedure, I used to make my webcam fully functional and will only accept comments based on what it was I actually did, not on what I didn't.

Hey, just wondering, I will be using this computer for school too, so battery is a big deal to me, just wondering if anyone knows the mAH values of the 9 and 12 cell batteries, and also if anyone knows any reliable vendors of the batteries (shipping to Canada) that would be very helpful.

Hello all! In a few days I will be officially an owner of a brand-spankin' new Asus G51Jx A1, and I have to say this thread has gotten me all excited. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the thread their valuable advice and experiences. I look forward to tinkering about with my laptop as soon as it gets out of the box. :)

One question: I purchased an external SB X-Fi USB card with my unit on XoticPC, only to read user reviews giving it a general consensus opinion of "damn terrible". It sounds like a newbie question and though I've had extensive experience with computers, this will be the very first laptop I will own for myself...but if I sell the X-Fi, I will still have an internal sound card to fall back on, right? Would it be good enough for mid-level sound production?

    Thanks again to all!

I just purchased my third laptop, the ASUS G51JX-X5 being my third and new laptop. I'm waiting for it to get shipped to my house and I cannot wait! I wanted to ask you guys, when I get it what is the first thing I should do. Should I install any special updates, etc?

    Hi Arcadiansky,
Thanks for the compliments om behalf of the most active members, and welcome to the G51Jx owners lounge!
Feel free to ask any questions or share experiences, (if not already summarized on page 1 of this thread of course).

As for the X-Fi; I had it myself for a previous laptop with audio problems. I share the "damn terrible" experience; hissing, crackling, usb connectivity issues, etc. Sell the thing if you can!

Yes, there is built-in audio; the Intel high definition audio chip. This is Intel's improved standard over and above AC97. The quality is 24 bits / 192 KHz, with integrated 7.1 sound compatibility. It supports several codecs and has variable bandwidth, for example 48 MBps with HDA codec, whilst the AC97 only supported a fixed 11 MBps.

To give an idea: the average adult human ear stops listening above 16 bits and 44 KHz sampling rate...

So yes, the audio is very good in fact, provided you recorded the MP3's in adequate (read high) sampling rate in the first place, of course.

For music production I'd say it serves all your purposes. It's a fast machine too, with lots of memory, from which music production software benefits. I have used it life on stage for a band I'm in, so go figure, it works in a noisy environment. And as for quiet environments; at home I connect the audio-out to my Hi-Fi installation, and am quite pleased with the result.

I bought it for gaming and that's what I spend most time doing with the machine, but it creeps into my life on all fronts; hobby, professionally, etc. A good sign, I think, (although my girlfriend begs to differ...).

    Regards,
    Jan

    Hi Shaythong,
The standard 6 cell delivers around 3 hours, (if not in Turbo mode), be the judge if that suits your needs.

Did you find a 12 cell battery for the G51Jx? Please provide a link if you can. I only heard of 9 cell.

Anyone in this thread use the build-in microphone? It's seem like I can't get it to work in ventrilo or any other voice chat programs. I want to use the build-in microphone w/ 7.1 surround system rather than a headset to talk.

Have you checked in Device Manager about the functionality of the microphone?
Make certain that it's *there* first, then go to Hardware and Sound Control Panel in Windows 7, select Configure Devices, Microphone, and make certain that it's "On" in the check window. There is also a "Check Microphone" function in that control panel, right where you check the speakers...between those 3 check and test areas you should have a working microphone!

That's all that I know how to suggest for you at this point, as I don't have my G51 back yet, though it's due in a day or two...

Good luck, and hope this helps you "find" the microphone.

    UPDATE:

I'm getting my G51 back in the next day or two, and it seems that I could have avoided the whole backflash, or "BlueTooth failure" by loading Defaults in BIOS after the BIOS Flash to v207, according to this email from Asus Tech Support, to wit:

    "Dear Mr. Rex XXXXXXXXXX,

This is to inform you that your system has completed RMA process this includes hardware diagnostics and full-functionality testing, the results were no trouble found with Bluetooth. Normally, we recommend loading Defaults in the BIOS after flashing it to configure al I/O devices successsfully like the Bluetooth. We will be shipping the unit back to you and you should receive it within 5 business days.

Thank you for choosing ASUS products.

Funny how BlueTooth just started working, (*Hmmmmm!*) you know? I am not 2nd guessing anybody about this issue, as we tried all of the normal channels to getting it working again in Tech Support sessions prior to my RMA being issued by the Supervisor at Tech Support, Asus, Taiwan ("Sadiq"), so all I can say is Thanks to God that they didn't have to replace my boards! That notebook would never have been the same, so I am very thankful that it's basically OK now, apparently! :D :D :D

I look forward to being back here in a couple days, and I certainly meant no harm in the last post I made about the driver issue with my last contact here...my apologies for any mis-consequences and misquotes or whatever it is that bugged you about my response, my bad!

I miss my G51JX-A1 so much I could just about cry crocodile tears at this point...got the Jones's about having it all over again big-time! This is sort of like when I first bought it, you know? I am really looking forward to opening up my shipping box and finding a reborn, completely "well" G51JX-A1 laptop, all ready for me to re-install my custom hardware and get back to work...and having fun, like YaaaaaY! :)

    later gents...
