Looks like DDR2 from my little bit of research. Im off to install windows and stuff but here is a very very close up macro shot of the gpu ram.
qimonda hyb18t51216 from what I can tell, thats a reallly high zoom plus I have no tripod or anything to take pics with.

should be able to look it up on that page. Later guys. -

wow staring at the little 15" screen for the last few hours makes my 37" computer monitor seem way too big.
Im still in the process of just installing windows and trying to setup my wireless network. Im having a hella time trying to get it secured, I need some sort of key that I dont even know to set it up, and puting my router in AP mode has made it so I cant connect to it.
Im also in the process of downloading 80+ windows updates for xp... -

Well first problem with me. I cant even run thru 3dmark06 without a restart.
I get thru the first 2 graphics tests and the fans spool up and the heat builds up some, but then in the cpu test the fan goes into turbo mode and about 1/2 thru the computer restarts. Its my guess that its due to heat.
I was in gaming mode. I'll try one more time in normal mode.
I cant even select overclock mode, not sure why. -
is something loose inside the laptop?
-
-
Geared2play.com Company Representative
its called turbo gear. It comes with the cd. That was not the issue if you read my above replies. Problem was with kingston 2gb ram. An odd problem. most vendors would not even know they had a problem unless they tested battery life
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
still maybe thats why I have the restart, but i feel its due to heat. -
hmm, are you sure all of the 4 fans at the back are spinning?
I'm guessing you haven't open the laptop yet to look inside? You might want to make sure the cooling pipes are secure... thats the only thing I can think of, since it does sound like a overheating issue. -

Edit: Did you install the parts yourself or was it done by a vendor? -

self install, all fans moving and you can feel the wind/heat.
I even did a AS5 instal on the cpu and gpu.
I dont like how the gpu uses cheap thermal pads for the ram, since there is too much space between the cooling block and the ram you cant use as5 there. -

oops got power4gear and turbo gear mixed up.

I haven't had these problems...I am in Gaming mode and OC'd to 475/550, I have yet to get a blue screen on AC or battery. I ran through all of 3DMark twice already. The fans speed up a little bit, but not a whole lot like that. Check your set up V...

The install was super easy, and I know everything is tight and working fine.
I think its software related. Everything I just tossed at the computer says I am running 2.66ghz in normal mode.
just ran 3dmark06 with no issues in normal mode got 3102 points. soon as I turn on game mode tho the thing turns into a jet engine and gets super hot but the performance doesnt seem to go up.
This is on XP... also I have a e6700 if that has anything to do with it.
Well its been a long day have to go to work in a couple of hours, so going to take a power nap (been up all day no sleep) I'll try to get deeper into everything later. -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
It may have to do with XP...most of this hardware is made with Vista in mind. Especially the GPU drivers and Turbo Gear.

Hey Ken, any chance we can order the Asus C90S without the video card? I'm hoping that by the end of August, ASUS might consider putting out a GDDR3 card. If not, I may consider purchasing another laptop. Sure, the PCMark scores are great, but I'd love to have both processing and gaming performance.
-
-
-
I'm pretty sure that it won't run without the video card, but there are places where you can buy the barebones without the GPU.
-
I think what the original poster of the question was implying -- was/is that he would like to buy the barebones without a video card in the hopes that maybe ATI will get off their butts and release their Mobility HD2600 and that Asus will maybe release a version of it. Or, maybe Asus will release a DDR3 8600M of some sort. -
Lmao, what a silly comment to make. Very much aware it won't run without it, but I'd rather forego the problem if it means waiting another week or two for a much better video card. I'd want to hold off on upgrading so shortly after spending over $1500.
EDIT: BrianL is correct. I've built my fair share of computers. I'd love the really nice boost in CPU rate. Hopefully the reviews coming up will tell me differently than the first scores posted. I don't really know how to overclock, and I don't want to risk blowing up the computer, so maybe the stock scores aren't as bad as they were first made out to be. -
Ok, sorry for answering your question. May I ask what the point is of having a barebones lying around that won't work? Why not wait until such a card is available and get it all then?
I don’t think it was a ridiculous assumption to make that you might not be aware that it doesn’t work without a GPU, since it would have taken you about 3 minutes to discover that the barebones is available without a GPU by searching either these forums or google. I tend to assume that people who don't know how to use search functions have a low knowledge base. Not to mention that it would be a largely irrational purchasing decision to spend money on technology only for it to sit around waiting for compatible technology to make it work. -

This morning just for kicks I downloaded the (500+ megabyte) 3DMark06 and installed it on my Dell desktop.
Quick specs on the machine:
2+ years old
P4 3.8GHz hyper-threaded
2 gigs ram
NVidia 7800GTX
All stock out of the box clock speeds everywhere.
It posted a 3DMarks score of 4100.
Now, I hate to be "that guy" -- but I think that score definitely puts some of these early C90S scores into perspective. Unfotunately, the wrong kind of perspective as far as I'm concerned.
Unless people (not just one guy) can post some reliably higher numbers -- i.e. 4000+ then I would say this machine as it stands now is definitely underwhelming.
It's unfortunate (for now at least) because I was personally hoping to use this machine for 3D development.
Guess we'll have to wait and see what some other people get with 3DMark scores. -
Your desktop is faster. The only games that will run slower on your desktop are games that make use of the dual core cpu in the C90s. The desktop 7800GTX is almost as good as the desktop 8600 GT/GTS.
Doesnt change the fact that the C90s is a very fast laptop. Together with the Asus G1s it is the fastest 15,4" laptop. The G1s has the faster GPU and the C90s the faster CPU. -
For most users, the C90 will be fine. I don't understand the underclocked GPU in this machine however. IN the IFL90 and the Dell 1520 it makes more sense because its a balance between performace and battery life. In the G1S they focused on performace and it gets that, but with less battery life.
You're never going to convince me that the C90 was ever designed to be less than a performance machine. Its possible that they were cutting costs - but then why didn't they offer the faster GPU as an option? Even if it was the version of the 8600 thats in the G1S with 256mb of memory people who are looking for the fastest computer may have opted to spend alittle more for it.
Things just don't add up on this one. -
Kidding Im not a real hardcore gamer and dont mind having medium settings on my games.
the only thing Im concerned is that so far I havent seen reviews of actual in game fps, etc (except Alexonfyre that tested BF but thats a pretty old game by now...) -

Really? I still can't get to it so mayb just a bit more b4 its fully uploaded

In the video you have it on Power saving mode. What is the battery life like in quiet mode?
"Users can manually set the power mode between a fanless “quiet-mode,” the “power-saving” mode, and the gaming mode which will overclock the CPU 30 percent." -

1.9 hours was tops. I felt it was pointless to review in other settings. The brightness was low. expect 1 hour during average use like plying dvd's, music, and such. expect almost 2 hours if you try really hard not toi use it. just reading with low brightness.
-
Hey guys, say I wanted to buy just the barebones alone of the C90, and then buy all of the other parts separately. Would it end up coming out cheaper than having a company build it all for me?
