No way to fix that other than getting a replacement laptop or replacement screen.

Mine also has light bleed out all 4 corners. Upper Left and right are just horrible though. Absolutely noticeable in games and videos on mine.

So, there are controls for the colors and you can select no color, but the lights don't turn off.

The Aura keyboard controls suck. Most function seem broken. Good luck trying to get settings to stick and work.

    Hello,

I am a fairly new owner of this laptop. Picked one up when amazon had it on sale for $1699 :)
I might have to return this specific model for something occuring that doesn't seem common at all. I brought a samsung T5 ssd and for some reason it will
periodically disconnection / connect but this of course causes my game / movie or whatever application is open from that drive to crash.

I've turned off all USB power settings and I've tested the device on other computers and it doesn't do the issue.

    You're not alone in this.

I also experience the same problem on Windows 10.

On Linux, I was able to solve this by disabling USB autosuspend:

echo "options usbcore autosuspend=-1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/disable-usb-autosuspend.conf

    And rebooting the machine.

I might have an idea about what's going on, based on a similar experience with the P751DM2-G running the Prema BIOS.
An year or so ago, I'd keep getting the device manager error of a failed USB hub on that machine.
Inspecting the BIOS settings for USB revealed that xHCI compliance mode, one of the settings not available in the stock BIOS, was set to ON by default.
Disabling this was the only way to prevent this problem from recurring. I also emailed @Prema on the same.
This mode should not be enabled by default on production grade hardware, and should only be used for platform validation.
You can see older bugs, such as this one, reported on the LKML: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg112824.html

so what should I do? I suppose I could try and ask Prema to see if he could mod the bios for that setting or to unlock hidden settings in the asus bios if possible or I could email ASUS but I doubt that would get me anywhere. I use this external SSD as my second main drive so I need a solution even if it means returning the device.

Edit: I ran a bios editing tool and saw that xHCI compliance is disabled even though it isn't shown in the settings.

    Fascinating.
Hmm, sounds like a viable choice. Clearly this is a BIOS issue that they can fix.

I don't fully understand, if that setting isn't enabled, how is it known to be a bios issue? Why is nobody else having the issue and why is it only happening on the right side ports, I've only tested it with my SSD though, I use my mouse on the left side ports.

I also have issues with my new unit from Amazon. The USB C ports doesn't work well. I posted my issue over at r/asus https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comme...ring_larger_files_to/?st=JQHC5AHF&sh=2140dc9a

It could be hardware issue, a pcie usb c controller issue, a driver issue, or bios issue.

This is not the only problem I experienced with this machine. The software that controls the RGB is also buggy. The settings would not save properly. During gaming the keyboard backlight switches (off while game is loading from windows, solid red when the game menu is loading, blinking red rapidly when has started) by itself ignoring your settings. The ROG logo lights up pink instead of red.

My old Clevo P650sg is more stable than this machine.

Somehow I feel some buyer's remorse thinking that maybe I should have bought the Blade 15 or the GS65. I know those laptops have their quirks as well but at least I know from reviews that the thunderbolt ports on those worked.

From your thread, can you confirm what enclosure you're using?
The symptoms you've described point to an overheating SSD.
The rapid drop in write performance under load is thermal throttling.
The disconnection is the SSD controller shutting down to prevent damage.

An issue that can be reproduced in an OS-independent test, affecting both Linux and Windows, points to the firmware.

The lack of a mass of people reporting the issue does not nullify the observation. Based on my limited experience with this machine (owned it for less than two months), this issue is sporadic, and only affects one port on the left side. And when this issue occurs, its' only on startup.

You might want to test the other ports too.

Have you installed the hotfix, at the bottom of the driver download page here? https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-Zephyrus-S-GX531/HelpDesk_Download/

Also, if you have an older build of Armor crate software, update it. From the same page, there's a build dated 2018/12/19,
whereas the previous build is about 3 months old as of today. .

I have thought of that too but I think it's unlikely. The SSD works very well on my desktop and even on the zephyrus s if I use a usb a 3.1 cable and not the usb c port. The same SSD is blazing fast when I use it on my MacBook pro with touchbar. It also worked on my 5 year old office desktop with usb a 3.0.

I'm actually in the market for a zephyrus and now that the gx531 is out I was thinking about getting it instead of the original gx501, but I have some reservations about the new gx531.

I see that asus has dropped thunderbolt3 from the gx531 for which a lot of people say is a step backwards and has instead added two type-c ports. My first and only real experience with type-c is with my smartphone (pixel XL 1) so to be honest, I'm not sure what I would use it for in a gaming pc other than display. I know people want to use it for adding an external desktop GPU, but from what I have seen it leads to a 10 - 15% decrease in the external GPU's performance which would be what you get in a gaming laptop by default right? Since the gx531 has 4k support via hdmi and it also has displayPort support over type-c then do we really need thunderbolt-3 especially in a gaming laptop?

the other thing that I'm wondering about is the new hinges the gx531 has. Do any of you have any problems with the limited amount of angles it can open at?
Also, do the hinges seem sturdy enough?
I ask because I have an asus zenbook (UX303L) and the hinges broke (a common problem with that line of laptops) which caused me to have to order the entire back plate for the screen and do "open heart surgery" on that laptop.

On your specific machine, USB Type -C Power Delivery (PD) is enabled.
You can charge that system with a Type-C charger.
It won't do much when you're gaming, etc, but its' a bonus for portability on the go.

Correction: It's only available on the GX531GM.
If that's your model, you're set to go.

Im suddenly having trouble with overclocking. In Armory Crate the sliders are there for fans but nothing else. If I try to use MSI Afterburner all overclock options are greyed out. I have tried updating Armory Crate, Windows, Drivers and anything else I can think of. Any ideas would be appreciated.

To add to the issue of the ssd disconnecting, the issue does not occur if I plug the device on the left side of the laptop. basically facing the screen, the left side ports are fine with everything and right side has the disconnection issue, it doesn't ever disconnect my mouse but it does disconnect my ssd.

Asus has yet to reach back but I know it hasn't been long enough. I don't mind waiting because of the window I have with amazon and the fact I reported the issue to amazon already and they told me to try things with asus first before returning/exchanging the item just incase.

I do want to add that aside from this issue, the laptop is pretty amazing, it handles tempatures well and doesn't throttle.

I just received a Zephyrus S as a "like new" refurb from Amazon - however it came with no ASUS software installed.

I installed Armoury Crate, however I don't see where I can overclock the GPU? From the System selection, I click Manual and all I can adjust is fan speeds, no clocks. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Additionally, I'm trying to update the BIOS....I download the file from the ASUS Product page, extract it (it's a .203 file) onto a FAT32 formatted USB, and attempt to flash it throgh EZ Flash, but it says it's not a BIOS file......frustrating.

You have to go into the "manual" profile and there should be the option to OC the GPU base clock and memory clock.

Mine did the weirdest thing today....It updated the bios and ec completely on its own.

I had it running spotify for a couple hours at work with the screen off. When I went to shut it down, it wanted to install micro$shaft updates; I let it and it shut down.

When I just turned it on about 30ish mins ago, it went straight to asus bios update. It happened so fast that I could not stop it unless I wanted to power off during a bios update.

After it completed and finally booted, I restarted and checked what it updated too. I was previously on BIOS: 203 and EC: F0CF0A01.003. I am now on BIOS: 300 and EC:F0CF0A01.004. Running Win version 1803 before and after.

While I respect how painless of an update that was, I am pretty damn furious I was forced an EC and BIOS update. I wonder if windows update is to blame and pro could have prevented this or if asus is to blame as i have a couple pieces of asus crap left on here.

Hopefully this makes me stable at -.165. I can game forever at -.165 but typing in OpenOffice and web browsing make the dreaded BSOD WHEA error come up. Not sure if its asus as their OC software(baked into armoury crate now) is known to be a BSOD WHEA culprit on an otherwise stable UV.

Going to run at -.165 for the next few days while at the office and just pray that OpenOffice can repair my files when/if I BSOD. Maybe the forced update actually does improve stability and it wasn't my -165UV...Although they did stop happening at -.160(which was tested before the ec and bios update).

In manual mode, it only has options for Fans, no OC.

    @Saint3448
you need to update your asus armory crate because latest version does have controls for OCing the GPU.

I contacted asus via email and like I expected, they've been of no help. The first person sent me links to drivers which I had already tried and I replied with everything I'd done and the reply after that was that the external SSD most likely doesn't support gen 2 and thats why it doesn't work in those ports. I didn't like to replying sends me a new person every time but I expected to hit a wall from this.

I don't know what to do, I can return this laptop but if the issue is related to bios then getting another isn't gonna fix an issue.

Razor - I downloaded the only "Armoury Crate" available on the Windows Store (It was labeled beta?) - the version I have is 1.4.1.0, is this not the correct one?

That is the same version I am on and mine has OC under the manual profile.

Did you download/install ARMOURY CRATE Service V1.4.1 from https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-Zephyrus-S-GX531/HelpDesk_Download/ BEFORE installing the windows store app? Asus says to install this first.

I realize Asus mentions that you need this for lighting controls, but it may be more than that.

I would uninstall the windows store armoury crate, install ARMOURY CRATE Service V1.4.1 from Asus' site, then install the windows store Armoury crate again.

I had the services installed, but I thought perhaps not in the correct order. So I uninstalled the services, uninstalled AC, cleaned my registry, and then downloaded and installed them in the "correct" order. Still no go. Weird.

Having the same issue. If you happen to figure it out please update the thread. I had the overclock option available a couple weeks ago and one day it was nothing but fan sliders like you. As a workaround I downloaded MSI Afterburner which I have used on this laptop before but all overclock options in it are now locked as well. May be something in the BIOS. Unfortunately I dont have much faith in ASUS to figure it out. Also, strangely, both of the BIOS updates for the GX531GS that were on the ASUS Support Site are now gone. Only BIOS updates listed are for GX531GM.

Most have probably figured it out by now but since no tutorials have been posted on how to disassemble the Zephyrus S I made a quick ifixit guide. The guide only goes as far as SSD and RAM replacement. I did not remove the heatsink and repaste in this one. Once my Thermal Grizzly arrives and I decide whether I want to void my warranty I will update it further. It is super easy to tear down, hope it helps. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Asus+ROG+Zephyrus+S+(GX531GS-AH76)+Disassembly/118082

What BIOS and EC are guys on?

Like my previous post mentions, I got force updated on BIOS and EC.

That all said, the BIOS & EC update seems much more stable. I am back to running at -.165v without BSODs in day to day work loads, like I was having before(games ran fine but daily work caused BSODs). Somehow, I am literally 10C cooler too in games now. GTA V was topping at 81C and BlackOps4 was hitting 88-91C. Today, all settings the same otherwise, GTA V topping at 71C and BlackOps4 at 74C.

I'm puzzled at the 10C drop, but Ill take it.

    Bios 300
    GOP Version 9.0.1077
    EC Version F0CF0A01.004

I don't know why they removed the GS bios from the asus support page, I am in contact with asus engineers hopefully this week but I don't know if I have much hope for any solutions on my issue.

So I finally got my overclocking features back. After several days of back and forth with ASUS Support I had exhausted all options that they provided and the last choice was factory reset. So I performed the factory reset after backing up my personal files and lo and behold my overclock sliders were there again. But aura wasn’t functioning properly, no lights at all so I updated to the latest version of ARMOURY CRATE service and it restored the aura but erased my overclocking options again. So I had to do another factory reset and pray that overclocking and aura both work this time. Luckily they did. So I guess I just can’t update my ARMOURY CRATE service ever again.

Wonder what Bios 301 improves over 300. Just states "stability improvement". 300 dropped my running temps considerably and stopped the system from draining my battery while gaming plugged in, like i mention on pg17.

Not exactly thrilled how my battery wear level went to 10% in the first week then has ceased to increase since the bios 300 update...you know, about when it stopped pulling battery power while plugged in(which I understand can be a feature when the PS isn't enough).

I am going to end up warranting mine due to light bleed. Maybe I can get a new battery then too.

Anybody know how many watts this model of MaxQ 1070 is?

I am assuming it's the 80w instead of the 90w....

Hi guys, the nightmare continues. So as I explained before, I did eventually get my overclocking option back by resetting my laptop to factory settings. I determined it is the newest version of armory crate service causing my headache because after the reset I downloaded the latest drivers and as soon as I installed armory crate service, my overclocking sliders disappeared. Now, on to the new problem. So a few days ago I accidentally changed my hard drive to dynamic partitions and that is not ideal. So I spend $60 on software that is capable of switching it back to basic with no loss of data. So I click the button to switch it back and poof, blue error screen. My 970 EVO was no longer a bootable drive. I booted from USB media and had to format my SSD and do a clean install of Windows. This means that I had to re-download some ASUS software and drivers, including armory crate service so im stuck with the latest version and cant overclock. ASUS support apparently doesnt hang on to previous versions. My question is do any of you still have the older version you could share? It cant be 1.3.1 or 1.4.1, those dont work. Thanks guys.

Edit: For clarity, it cant be fixed by resetting like before because when i was forced to format the hard drive that recovery partition was deleted.

I am also interested in this. And if it turns out to be 90W, would someone be willing to provide a copy of their vbios as I am trying to crossflash my GS65 from 80W to 90W.

    Hi,

I recently bought an asus Zephyrus gx531 with an rtx 2070... Is it normal, that cpu temps peak at 95-97°C during Cinebench R15?

If that's with an 8750H, then these temps are a bit higher than average.
    Consider applying an undervolt.
On the older Zephyrus M GM501GS XS74, undervolted by 125mV, 50mV and 50mV for the core, uncore and GT respectively, I get peaks of mid-70s in the same benchmark.
Thermal compound in use: Phobya Nanogrease extreme.

With an undervolting of - 0,130 and - 0,130 on the core, it still hits peaks of 87 °C...
Are you running in turbo mode?

    Hi everyone,

could someone please confirm that the USB-C displayport is wired to the NVidia card and not the Intel integrated graphics?

    It is explained here, but I'll copy&paste: https://uploadvr.com/oculus-rift-s-valve-index-no-hdmi/ https://uploadvr.com/oculus-rift-s-valve-index-no-hdmi/

An example of a laptop which would not work.

I am planning on using the laptop for VR development 'on the go' and it being the slimmest available laptop would be a huge plus. But I do need working displayport so if anyone could confirm if it is indeed wired to the Nvidia GPU, that would be a massive help.

    Thanks!

Your NB has one USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C with DP 1.2 port, this should provide you with VR connectivity.
Also, this NB is advertised to have VR capability.

All needed aplication drivers has been instaled and now I don`t have hot keys animations like on oryginal ssd . Armoury crate doesn`t recognize my gx531gx :(. Anyone can help me with hot keys and armoury crate ?

Hi guys, just found out this this forum and I that i am not the only one who stepped across problems with this pc.
    My problems so far are:
-My left and down arrow tend to have a greener tint compared to the other keyes(e.g. if I set the color to be white, those two buttons are a little bit green). Hence, if I have to turn on rgb lighting I set it on red, so everything is more uniform and this defect remains unnoticed. I read on some rog forum that this is a bios bug, because if you set your colors to be the primary ones (red, green, blue) there is little (if not) "distortion".
-The right side, that space that goes from the enter key to the trackpad is a little "elevated", and you can push it down a few millimeters down. Not a big deal but come on, this is a 3000€ pc, I expected the bluild quality to be top notch.
-The trackpad sometimes goes crazy for one second and doesn't detect my input. It happened like three times now, not a big deal and I think it is software related.
-The left side bezel is a little bit loose. I mean, while the top and right are fixed in their position, you can move a tiny little bit the left one. I came across this one randomly and I believe this is caused by the glue not being applied correctly, but come on again, asus.
-The Armoury crate software is complete garbage. When I first got this laptop, i set it so the screen would work at 144hz even when it wasn't plugged in. Result: AC would crash and I had to reset the laptop after two days of usage. Now I undervolted the cpu by -0.125mv and the app works(I mean you can set the various power options) but it doesn't display the cpu stats no more.
-Speaking of the CPU, it runs HOT! Like mid 90s celsius hot. Here in Italy it's currently 25-28 degrees, but the main selling point of this product was the fact that is packages a slim format and high end components, using an innovative thermal solution. I didn't see any of that. I tried Shadow warrior for around half an hour and It was always in the mid 80s, wolfenstein the new colossus and it was in the mid 80s with spikes to the 90s and shadow tactics blades of the shogun and it was almost constantly in the high 80s and mid 90s. I read online that it is normal for such Intel cpus to run this hot, but i wasn't expecting is from this device. And this was after undervolting with throttlestop.
-There is coil whining when the pc is under heavy load. I was working on a scene in Maya yesterday, and when I moved my mouse(since I use external m+k and monitor) you could hear a buzz noise. Apparently, If I unplugged the laptop from the power brick, It would stop, but I don' really know what to think.
-When I first got this pc, I noticed I couldn't press "in the right way" the 3 key. Further investigations got me into discovering that there was a small little plastic piece that was blocking the pressing mechanism. So yeah, Asus really pays very attention to its assembling process.
In a month or two, I am planning on taking this laptop to an Asus gold stor near me and have this defects solved(at least the hardware ones) and maybe have it repasted, but I don't think that this is going to be a solution since The cpu and gpu share the same heat pipes and the gpu doesn't seem to have any thermal problem. I was thinking of requesting an rma, but at least here in Italy the Asus repair centers have a really really bad reputations, there are cases where they sent the pc back to their owner in a worse state than it was before, In addion to that the help center have been very vague regarding my problems and they take one or two entire days to reply. I have a friend that had to send his Dell g3 to Dell's repair center due to screen problems and in a matter of days they solved everything, even sending it back to him in a much more robust and "cooler" box to prevent transport issues.
In conclusion, I spent a huge amount of money for a GX531GX expecting top quality and I now have in my hands on a marketing gimmick. I'm keeping it, because it still works fine (if you don't count the thermals and the coil whine buzz) but this will be my last asus laptop.

Great thread for GX531GS owners, have been following it for a while now.

If could it be possible that someone can upload the copy of esupport folder archived. Would be great for offline updates of driver or someone who lost it by resetting like myself.

    Thanks!

You can't force it to turn on without BIOS & Nvidia driver support unless someone hacked the driver.
