It's snappy enough at 550MB/sec, and 1/2 the cost or 2x the size.

Yes but that would be external and I already have a 4tb HDD. I will probably put the 500gb ssd in an external enclosure

Use an inventory tool to check, CPU-Z is traditionally used, but there are many others these days. It might show a part number, but it should show the specs it's running with along with the XMP data for other settings.

You would think. Had nothing to do with instructions. Paste job and pads where fine. Something was seriously wrong with the heatsink.

It helped micro center had the ssd $100 off and mislisted the gx501 by $100

It looks like the prices for the 2TB and 4TB 2.5" SSD's are still too high, that's too bad.

You got the 1TB 960 for how much on it's own?

The Crucial 1TB M.2 SATA is $289 at newegg, and the Samsung 960 Evo M.2 NVME is $462, for $173 + tax more.

    A 2TB 2.5" for $539:
    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226859

SSD prices are too high, I would have kept the internal SSD storage - 512GB is good and maybe get a 1TB SSD to replace the 2.5" as they are still cheap enough, or wait for a great sale on 2TB/4TB 2.5" drives.

So you overpaid about $100 for the SSD at least compared to newegg prices, there might be lower prices and discounted sales from time to time elsewhere.

But, we all over pay from time to time for convenience, and in the red mist rage lust of getting new hardware.

You can always return the SSD to Microcenter when you go to swap the laptop for another one - I didn't forget this one is overheating - you're going to need to pull the SSD and RAM anyway to swap for another unit.

Why did you install them knowing the laptop CPU was overheating so badly?...

Because at this point I can't swap the laptop my parents won't let me so its not gonna happen

You can't go to school with that laptop overheating...you only have a limited time window to swap it or return it.

If you can't swap it, then tell them you need to return it.

It can get worse over time, so I don't think you should risk keeping it if it's running in games at 100c, it's gotta be thermal throttling.

I know you want it, but you can't keep this particular unit, did you check stock at the Microcenter in your college town? Maybe call them up and let them know you are coming and need a replacement - make sure to loop in your local shop to approve the time extension for return too.

Yeah, that's what I thought, you're afraid of getting zippo out of the deal. But, it's worse to get stuck with a 100c CPU gaming laptop...

That's why I suggested getting on the phone and talking with Microcenter, tell them about the overheating and you need a new unit, and depending on which store is going to get it first swap it there.

You can't just let this slide...

You're the first with a really bad overheating unit reported, the other was DOA, so chances are you'll get a good one...

Can someone compare with me and play metro last light redux for 45 min and share pic of max temp?

It would be nice for comparison.
My parents think I do stuff to all my laptops that makes temps bad.

Well, they are correct, using the laptop does raise the temperature, so it is all your fault. ;)

It's just that you're a lucky guy, always pulling the hot CPU units, it's always really the Wolf's at the door. :D

@Darkhan , or someone else, can you please test for @mason2smart so he can prove to his parents his GX501 is overheating, you guys can work out the tests...

For stock paste at ultra settings and GPU also OC I am fine with those numbers.

The X7 DT V7 has about the same temps, I think 88c for the high on CPU and GPU a little lower also at 82c.

For undervolt I just did the lazy method, XTU slide the core back to -135 apply and save, when I get some time I will setup throttlestop.

For OC GPU use MSI afterburner 200 core 200 mem runs nice and not too hot.

I think the 120 hz display might be 3d capable. 3d mode is available in windows 10 display settings... Can anyone confirm 120hz 3d capability (not anaglyph) in the built-in display?

Have not ran benchmarks only Metro Redux on ultra for 45min of heavy play same test as before.

I doubt I would see any performance increase as I have not changed the OC setting and had no throttling before/ perhaps it can handle a higher OC now on the gpu?

Could you please run Aida64 test as my guide here? Cpu Package Power around 24W and +80c on processor is rather hot. None with the Razerbook and the power gimped 1080 gpu with the updated 7820 wanted test it and post the results. Probably because they knew what the results would be. Thanks

Thanks. +rep. Wonder how it would be without re-paste.
This is hot. As expected, cpu thermal throttling the whole test. Seems the processor can't hold max clocks throughout the test and can't reach fully 45W TDP due heat. What ambient temp is the test done in? OEMs specs is up to 35c. Higher ambient, the higher temp and noise. What you think @hmscott ?

And you mean the noise was within the promised 39/40db? What was the average cpu clocks as the cpu was thermal throttling?

This was a very short test and if you have run it longer, changed out (unchecked) Stress Gpu in Aida with Heaven, You would see even higher temp. As Heaven will tax higher loads on gpu. But thanks for testing.

I did not test the fan noise, I have before and get around 50-55db from keyboard area under heavy load. The noise is low enough to my ears I can easily play games without need of headphones, Razer 14 and RBP both I had to use headphones to game, The X7 V7 is a little louder but still tolerable and also play with no headphones.
