Risco, I've got the same router as you. I get 150mbps. Is that what you are getting after your restore? I really like this router and the stock wireless card on the N61 has been very reliable. But I have always wondered if upgrading the wirless card would speed things up by better utilizing this router.

wooo this firmware is supposed to only "turn off the automatic standby timer that was designed into the drive" ( see the seagate's STXWoj specialist post) but thats boost the drive too... thanks for this

About BIOS 212 does anyone see any differnce between 210 and 212 ?

Thanks for the updates steve, I appreciate it!

    However a warning to others,

I installed the ELAN drivers (as well as the ATK update) and now I can't disable the touchpad, but all my other Fn+ keys work.

Also my SRS Sound enhancer tool shows that it's working but doesn't actually work like before...

So my advice is, if you don't have problems, I wouldn't update.

Anyone know how to fix mine?

PS: Also Steve, the new Audio driver does not say SRS on it, so should we still install it?

I can verify that Fn+F9 does not disable the touchpad for me either. I never used that feature, so I didn't notice; thanks for bringing it up. I'm not sure if it's the new ATK or the ELAN driver that killed it.

I never used the SRS features, though the SRS window does pop up when I double click the saturn-looking icon. Can you expand on what the feature is supposed to do, so I can test if mine is working? It may very well be a driver issue.

The filename for the newest audio driver I posted is "Audio_Realtek_SRS_Win7_32_Win7_64_z6016176.zip" (contains SRS in the filename). The zip also contains an SRS folder, so it should be a compatible driver, but no promises.

    Thanks for the reply,

I fixed the Fn+F9 by rolling back my drivers, but the SRS problem is still around.

So when you double click the Saturn icon (SRS), it gives you options to change the quality of the sound coming from your speakers (or headphones).
Before I installed the new Realtek drivers it worked fine. What it does is makes the sound coming from your speakers much better sounding by processing it. I found it to be a nice upgrade from normal especially when listening to music and some movies.

In the middle of the SRS control panel there's a On/Off switch, so you can test the difference by playing a song, then clicking that button to hear a change.

I tried rolling back my driver, but it simply rollsbackto Microsoft drivers and does not solve the problem.

I've also tried installing the drivers from my Driver CD that came with the laptop (both installing the drivers and installing the SRS Control panel setup again) but it still does not work.

What happens now is that when I open up the SRS control panel, I now get "Advanced options" at the bottom, but there is no change to my sound when i test it.

    Any help would be appreciated!

PS: I believe the issue to be with this new SRS Control Panel that was somehow installed when I updated my drivers (but i am not sure)

    Happy testing

I tested the SRS effects, and it indeed changes the quality of the music when you click that blue button to turn it on/off.

I'm not sure why yours isn't working right. I looked in msconfig, and there is an SRS audio startup item:

    C:\Windows\Installer\{E5CF6B9C-3ABE-43C9-9413-AD5FFC98F049}\NewShortcut5_21C7B668029A47458B27645FE6E4A715.exe

I think it creates a link in the startup folder (start menu) to "C:\Program Files\SRS Labs\SRS Premium Sound Control Panel\SRSPremiumPanel_64.exe", which is definitely running as a process on my system.

Maybe next time you uninstall the driver, make sure to manually delete that SRS folder?

oooops... this is probably what I get for blindly installing drivers...I installed the latest hotkey driver from the main post and now none of the dedicated buttons (power mode, volume controls, play/pause) do anything, and the only fn keys that work are the dim, birghten, blackout, and sleep ones. anyone have any thoughts? how can I uninstall the driver? or do I need to? Before I installed it, it would randomly display the volume up imagery every time i rested my hands on the computer....just got this computer today, any thoughts?

    You installed V1.0.0005, correct?

    Can you verify the following:

    1) Start => Run => msconfig

    2) Click the "Startup" tab

    3) Verify that "ATK Hotkey," "ATKOSD2," and "ATK Media" are all present and checked

If not, go to Control Panel => Uninstall a program => ATK Package to uninstall the driver, then reinstall.

As for the resting hands issue, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I would take it back to the store for a replacement.

Steve, the branch of touchpad drivers you are posting are incorrect. If you notice the Asus ones are on the 7.0.5. branch. For example the latest one is the 7.0.5.12 which now enables a new feature called smartarea setting. This should stop the mouse jumping when typing.

I was just going for highest version number. The new feature is nice, and the driver date is actually newer than 7.0.7.0, AND it fixes Fn+F9 to disable the touchpad. Updated on the front page; thanks and repped.

Thanks! One thing you might want to point out is that it messes up multi touch zoom on firefox ( only works if you disable the new feature )

Also for reference the newest Wireless drivers for Atheros cards are under WLAN section at their download site. The drivers have bug fixes specifically for Asus configurations.

Apparently, the release notes for the desktop driver mentioned that the mobility version would be skipped this month (due to "unforeseen circumstances"). But it looks like they removed that note, so maybe it will just come a little late.

From reading the N71JQ owners lounge, am I right in assuming a lot of the drivers posted here (apart from probably the BIOS) can also be used on the N71JQ?

    Thanks

Either your or my camera is installed upside down; 207 works fine for me. Just change the Flip registry setting to fix it, or use whatever driver works best for you. Here is my post from before on the registry setting.

I never had ATI gpu before, and I know that Nvidia driver support is pretty good :)
With that in mind is the driver supprt for this machine any good ? It goes to my brother in law for college, and he's not that great with computers, so will ATI driver support couse him problems with updating and such ?

I have big problem with the USB 3.0 v.3.0.2.5 firmware/driver. After updating with the latest firmware, my USB 3.0 external drive can not work properly. It keeps detecting & disconnecting every 2-3 seconds continuously. I went back to the original driver from Asus, and it works fine. But what about the new firmware already installed ? Does it mean I can't go back to the old firmware now ? How do I know what firmware version I'm currently using ? What's your original firmware version ?

Depending on whether or not you have the latest driver installed, there might be a program folder called "Renesas Electronics." If you don't have the latest driver, it will be "NEC Electronics" or something similar. Inside, there should be a program called USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver. Run that, and it should tell you the current driver and firmware version. I think it should be possible to flash an older firmware, although the installer may not overwrite newer versions by default. You may have to look into using the command-line FWUpdate64.bat utility.

Not sure on the original firmware version.

Just to let you all know, I am not using the ASUS SRS utility any more.
Very recently SRS Labs has released a new utility which I found to be much better.
In my openion it offers a far better sound quality than the original ASUS SRS utility.
Actually I never liked the sound produced when I had the original ASUS SRS utility enabled. I usually had it disabled all the time.

Here is the link to the new utility:
SRS Labs :: SRS HD Audio Lab

The downside is that it is not for free. It costs $29.99, but SRS Labs offer 1 month free trial.
The other small thing that I disliked is that this tool does not offer the feature to minimize to tray automatically at startup. This is the first public version of the tool. Hopefully, they will implement it in future updates.

I have been trying it for three weeks now and loved the improved sound quality it offered.
I finally bought it yesterday. Becuase of the exchange rate, in euros it only cost me €23.5. :D

Any of the drivers with the exception of BIOS should work on the N71JQ. That said, you should probably only update devices for which you have issues; I like to update everything, but sometimes it causes problems.

The ASUS-specific ATI driver includes an HDMI audio driver that has not been packaged in the recent few Mobility Catalyst (generic driver) drivers. If you choose to install the generic drivers (which are generally updated once a month, as opposed to once in a blue moon for the ASUS-specific) and wish to have the latest HDMI driver version, you can install it manually using the desktop driver package (only for the HDMI audio device). I posted earlier in this thread on how to do that.

It's generally a good idea to keep video drivers up to date. While new versions can introduce problems, they often bring performance improvements and fix bugs.
