The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M: Successor of the GeForce GTX 460M and based on the new GF116 chip. The performance is about 13% better than the 460M, but due to chip optimizations the power consumption is similar. These cards offer the best 3D performance in a laptop. They can handle all the latest games at high resolutions and high detail settings. The power consumption of these GPUs is very high.

anyone notice that the G74SX BBK7 sound out of the laptop sucks? i have the volume up at 100% and the "THX tru studio" is all the way up and i even switched the setting on THX to external speakers, when i did, it sounded a little higher in volume but it sounds like its only about 25% to 50% . anyone know why?

arimpd is supposed to say around. I'm still between two notebooks, one has a standard keyboard and my G74 has the chicklet keys... it's miserable switching back and forth between the two.

When I saw your message, I immediately got into Windows to check. It's not a BIOS update, it's an update to the utility that performs BIOS updates. So whatever it changes, it's probably nothing interesting.

I also have the HD555 headphones and found a big improvement in audio with the Soundblaster X-Fi external sound card. I've since returned my G73 but imagine I'll find the same enhancement with the G74. For those who want the highest quality audio possible with either laptop, I'd highly recommend.

just saw the new Battlefield 3 trailer. Looks so damn epic! Vacation on the 25th october for sure!.. So it gets me thinking. How will my G74 handle it? any thoughts, guesses? Will 6 gigs of ram be enough or should I slam in some more?

While the chipset doesn't support raid it can be done in software. Win7 pro or ultimate can be configured to support raid. There are a few G73's floating around with raid0 and the G74 uses the same chipset. There are some guides here on NBR.

I am interested to know what are the exact dimensions and weight of the package that is sent to the customer, not the box inside the package itself.

Like the weight and exact dimensions of the outer packaging in this video:

    23 1/4" x 7 7/8" x 15 1/2"

My box was somewhat crushed when I got it, so there may be some question about that middle number, but I picked the end that didn't look crushed to measure.

As for weight, I don't have an exact figure for you, but the UPS label on top says 18 lbs.

    Hi,

Can anyone confirm if the G74 has easy access (opening one panel - as in the Clevo p170hm) to the CPU and GPU fans/heat sinks.

I have an old gateway gaming laptop and the main problem is that every few months you need to clean out a massive wall of dust from between the fan and heat sink otherwise you get overheating and auto shutdowns, and its a pain to get to you have to take everything apart.

The Asus G74SX only has easy access to RAM, SSD, & WIFI Card. The rest CPU & GPU you must tear it down. so far ive torn down a G53SW and that was some what of a pain, hoping this G74SX to be better.

    Hey guys...

Could someone direct me to a guide / give me advice on how install an SSD in my ASUS G74SX-A1 (in addition to the primary drive)?

I tore it open today and it has two bays but it seems like there is only one place to connect / power one hard drive...?

I am really sorry if this has already been asked 1000 times.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi everyone! :)
I just bought my G74SX and I'm very pleased with it, except for one thing.
When I buy a gaminglaptop for ~2000 USD I EXPECT it to be clean from bloatware and unnecessary applications, but NO.
The laptop came pre-installed with crappy games, and crappy ASUS applications which is needed for the laptop to work correctly.
My old laptop (An old Acer) worked correctly when I removed all bloatware and acer applications, and that laptop was a cheap craptop.

No wonder Apple laptops are getting more and more sales with PC laptops being full of bloatware.

So I BEG you all proud owners of this very powerful laptop to speak up!
I've sent an "angry" mail to ASUS suggestions mailbox, and I suggest you all to do the same!

Maybe ASUS will listen to us and make a clean install available for download, that's what I'm hoping for.

Here's a link to the Escalation Mail Box where you can send your suggestions to ASUS:
    http://vip.asus.com/eservice/cus_suggest.aspx

Thank you all, and power to the people!

Unfortunately, that won't happen. A company like Asus does that to keep the costs down; the only way to get a clean installation is to either order a laptop from a boutique seller like a Clevo that doesn't even have Windows (you have to purchase a license or use yours) or pay them to do a clean installation for you before the laptop is shipping.

Any "name brand" laptop is going to have some form of crap on it. It's to tempting for them to pass up the money to add something to an image and mass load it.

You never know what will happen, if enough customers complain about something they're forced to change it (if they care about their customers).
Apple computers doesn't come with lot's of crap installed (even though I think all Apple products are crap) and they sell like crazy, so making a computer without bloatware is very much possible.

What a pain in the :(

Was tempted to buy the Best Buy version when i visit NY in december but think I will look for something else now.

Is it just me who thinks this is crucial feature in a gaming laptop which is likely to begin overheating after a few months of dust have gathered???

Ive just bought new ram and used it for a little while. No worries putting the new sticks in there. I Have a problem now tho.. Games lock up and crash after a little while of playing!!! Faulty RAM? Do I need a bios update? whats up? and what can I do?

Ive done memory test and theres nothing wrong with the RAM. Hmm starting to think that the G74 cant handel the 1866mhz ram... any thoughts on this guys? Ive tried the new BIOS and it made it more stable.. got 30 min of gametime in then the sound Frooze in a loop. turned of the game and the computer was fine... Started youtube and watched a clip in 1080p. sound was fine. it ran for a few min then Blue Screen. some memory dump then reboot.

Now what!? Back to the old crappy 1333mhz ram?

    Hello everybody.

I've got a strange issue that came up today, for some reason my gpu is now listing as nvidia N12e-GS-A1, I know that was Nvidia's number for the GTX 560M in development. I haven't made any recent changes but have been having all of my installed games have been crashing since I noticed this early this morning.

I am using the 275.33 drivers and haven't had any problems till today. Everything else seems to be working fine, I just can't play any games for more than a minute or two before they lockup or crash. My temps have been good the whole time, highest is 76c on cpu and 72c on the gpu.

If anyone has any ideas or fixes for this I'll be waiting, by the way I already tried a restore and it didn't fix the issue. Thanks in advance.

Sir actually the Intel i7 2630 QM cannot handle memory that is clocked higher than 1333, yes you have to go back to the crappy 1333 or tear down your unit to install a 2720 QM Cpu

It has been doing it on stock clocks or on an overclock, best stable overclock before this came up was 925/1850/1400 and was good in Dirt3 for 3hrs. I don't think it's the drivers, i tried reverting to stock and got 5mins in Dirt3 before it crashed at stock clocks.

Not sure what's going on here but it is scewy.

Does anyone have being having issues with the HDMI? I connected it to my LG 37" Full HD LCD and it does show the picture but it is "oversized". Going through the specs, the laptop recognize it as LG TV, resolution 1920x1080 but the picture in the TV screen appears "oversized" this is the best explanation I can give. Do you think it is a drivers matter? I really didn't try another port of the 4 the TV has, I will try tonight, but for what I have searched there a several with TV’s not being recognized or recognizing the TV but showing no picture.

Quandth - it's a TV matter. Google "overscan HDMI". Most decent TVs have a function you can use to remove it these days.

There is a small bag in your box that has extra screws and a connector and ribbon. You connect the connector to the drive, then the ribbon to the drive, and the other end of the ribbon to the motherboard connection that's up and to the middle of the HD slots. Then you put in the steel case. The connector has a small plastic latch that swings 90 degrees to affix the ribbon to it. The motherboard connection has a latch that very slightly moves up and down.
