Any idea if its possible to change the current CPU, in my case, Intel i7 2630qm, for a 2820Qm ?.

Also, I had the machine for 2 weeks now, and the keyboard seems slugish. I had the G73 JH and SW, and they had the same lag, but in the G74 it seem worst.

for the g74sx-bbk7(this is the one I have) i also had keyboard lag but after i updated to this new driver all is well. You have to uninstall the old one and reboot. then after that install the new one and reboot again and no more lag. keyboard was always missing letters when i typed fast now its fine
    its the ATK package 1.0.00010

I am thinking about buying the ASUS G74SX-XA1 via Amazon.com. Has anyone used this? I would appreciate some feedback. Aside from 1 HD vs 2 and no bluray is there any difference between this and the A1? I am only concerned because I dont want to buy this if it is similar to bestbuy models and are a lower quality.

    Thanks!

If not try some sony dvd+r and if that dont work then yes the dvd rom has an issue. hopefully you get this resolved!!! if you need a copy of that .iso i can just mail you one :) if you like pm your address ill maile a copy from my work. i have made 3 iso's just incase i loose one LOl

    Hey.

I just got my Asus G74 home. And I must say that I love it.
Now to my question: I've read somewhere that uninstalling Oberon games will mess something up in Windows 7. Is this correct? Or can I uninstall the preloaded Oberon games safely, without messing something up?

Anyone have any experiences with this?

    Hi folks

i've had the g74sx for a couple of weeks and I have a general question to you whose quite familiar with the G -series.

its about the cooling vents and dust. It may be my imagination, but i feel that i can hear an increase in the noise from the vents lately. For you who had both g73 and the g74, how is the long time effects of dust in the ventilation systems? on my old notebook, i could unscrew the backlid and blow the dust out of the fans.

what are the options for such an operation in the G -series?

I downloaded and tried to install the latest Nvidia 275.33 driver set on my G74sx-3de and it won't install...compatible hardware not found. I used to deal with the OEM branded video drivers years ago with HP laptops, but since I have been using Asus laptops I have never seen this issue until this model. Why did Asus modify the cards identifier? How can I work around this and is it safe to try to use a modifed .inf? How did you install the beta 280.19 drivers?

    Thanks.

My hardware ID is CMO1726. That is the one with the 1000:1 contrast, right?

Can anyone answer my previous question: I've heard that deleting Oberon games from the computer, could mess something up in Windows 7. Have anyone tried deleting the Oberon games, and did you have any problems after doing that?

Well, to confuse you more, I just downloaded and installed the 280.19 drivers without issues. In fact, the notes on the driver page specifically state that it will work with the Asus G74sx-3de. The only weird thing that happened was that during the install an error popped up saying "could not delete oem.inf" or something really similar to that. I hit okay and the rest seemed to install fine.

Make sure you go to nvidia page and search for you exact card. My installer is called 280.19-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-beta.exe

    Hope this helps.

    Hi guys,

I received my brand new G74 (glossy version) after 1 month of waiting my relatives to come to Romania :)).

As a first impression i love the build. It looks and feel so brick builded and i love it. Also it look bigger than an ordinary 17 inch notebook. I have a Lenovo 17'' from work to compare with and ASUS G74 can easily eat the Lenovo during lunch :)).

Fan noise is constant/low even if you're doing web surfing/office tasks or play games.
Speakers are fairly loud - THX Creative Program does a great job.

I managed to install the new NVIDIA GTX560 280.19 beta driver without modifying the inf and worked perfectly.

I hate the NumLock/calculator button issue but i will wait for the BIOS update witch presumably will solve the stupid situation.

Display is amazing and is not so reflective how i though. Its contrast and brightness does make a big difference. It is so bright that i cant use the display at full brightness because it hurts my eyes :)).
The hardware ID of display is CMO1726 - the notebook was buyed from Gentech PC.

Regarding the display though i saw something that I'm not pleased with.
When i lower the brightness like 2,3 ... x lines down, the display lamp looks like flickering, the light seems to come out from lamp in waves and becomes obviously annoying.

What do you think is it a problem with the voltage of display lamp, driver, hardware... or maybe is a problem from screen?

Could you guys test this on your notebook?
On the black wallpaper that G74 comes with (or any black wallpaper), lower the brightness 2,3 ... x steps down and please tell me if the light is constant on your screen or seems to come out in waves/fluctuates.

I look forward for your reply!

    Thanks,
    Alex

On my current unit the lamp seems constant on a all brightness settings. I noticed waves on the g74sx-a1 I rma'd mid July. IMO it sounds like a hardware / power issue talk to gentech about a RMA.

I can't RMA the unit to Gentech as I am in Romania and Gentech in USA :(.
Damn I'm so dissapointed now because i don't wanna go to the local Romanian ASUS Service Center as they are all idiots and have bad customer care.

It's clear now that something is not ok with the voltage. The situation seems to occur when the screen shows a darker image and only when i change the brightness settings/voltage. It look like some sort of static effect like a electronic jamming that goes flashy.

Yes i saw on internet that many notebooks have this problem. It seems that are different triggers for it... the screen power converter and or cables, faulty videocard, or motherboard.

I'm worried about ASUS service center here in Romania.
I can't use the screen like that because is annoying and stressing when you work much time :).

Well, I tried lowering the brightness. I can see the flickering too. But on mine it isn't really annoying, it is only a small area in the bottom right of the desktop wallpaper, or any other black picture.

How big is the affected area on yours?

The G74SX-BBK7 comes with not one but two 500 GB (7200 rpm) hard drives, and memory is 8.00 GB RAM . its got a good gaming performance. could use a better battery ( 74Wh 8-cell battery ).the G74SX-BBK7 comes with " WiMAX ". advantage of WiMAX, which keeps you connected to online games, if you're close to a wall outlet, and a metropolitan area.Network Adapter Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 6150 .

Hi everyone, new guy here and I just want to say hello. Just got the g74 in my sig today, upgrade from my previous asus, also in the sig. So far, so awesome...can't wait to load up Witcher 2 and lose lots of sleep.

Great forum by the way, so much info and community here, very happy I found this place. Odd, from what i've read here I expected issues with the keyboard but haven't experienced any.

Agreed, the sound is average but i've yet to be impressed with any laptop i've come across when it comes to sound. Sennheiser hd555 shall suffice. ;)

by the way, I just assumed when making the profile that computer specs were sigs, seeing as a lot of people have that. I don't see anywhere to create a sig in user CP.

I currently have a g74sx-xt1 with a 500gig 7200 rpm hdd, I was thinking about having a segate momentus hybred 500 gig drive added for more storage and preformance. 2 questions though:

    1. Do you think this will boost preformance enough to be worth it?
    2. What effect will this have on the warrentee.

    Thanks

Check this review, lots of good info.
Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive Review - The Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid - Legit Reviews
Here's the conclusion of the review.
What we found is that while moving files around on the desktop, doing disk to disk transfers or general transfers that the Momentus XT performed just like you'd expect a 7200RPM notebook hard drive to perform. The difference is after restarting Windows 7 a few times and opening applications like Adobe Photoshop CS5, Microsoft Word or Sony Vegas 9 that they opened faster on the hybrid drive. This is because the hybrid drive's software was learning what we use most and was storing parts of those applications directly into the NAND Flash for improved loading times. This is what Seagate's adaptive memory technology is supposed to do and it does it well.

I've noticed similar g74 windows experience index's are much higher than mine in regards to the primary hard disk score. Is there something wrong with my computer and if so how may I resolve it?

    score: 5.9

    processor: 7.4
    memory: 7.6
    graphics: 7.3
    gaming graphics: 7.3
    primary hard disk: 5.9

by the way, I was messing with overclocking last night and this morning with mixed results. I've been going with numbers that I see other members achieve while running 3dmark11 and msi afterburner.

the issue was while running 3dmark it would stop and on the right bottom corner there would be an error stating that the nvidia driver kernel stopped working but has recovered. This error kept coming back up as I tried running 3dmark multiple times afterward. Someone told me that I broke it, and I assume he meant I broke my gpu, which i'm quite worried about.

On the up side, my last 5 3dmark tests have run with no issue at all, so maybe it was a temporary problem? I closed out everything and since then no more error messages. I even overclocked a bit for a decent score. If I did "break" it, would this even be possible? I'm such a noob, and now quite the anxiety ridden one at that.

This error also showed up on my 3dmark previously, but I have yet to reproduce it again in my last 5 tests.

Workload Single init returned error message: eva::d3d11::rendering::scene_renderer::render(): draw_depth_task for thread 0: File: device_context.cpp
