I just bought the x-1 from best buy. So far I am really happy with it except when I am trying to play battlefield 2. It runs the game great, however at the top of the screen when I am pressing any (asdw) keys I get a flashing white bar with a green arrow on the right side of it. In the bar there are different chinese looking characters and some english characters. It is like the game or some program is attempting to register the typing. The text bar flashes extremely fast. Does anyone know what this might be and how to fix it? It causes my game to lag really bad and makes it unplayable. Thanks.

This is some kind of regional/language bar. You are activating it by pressing Ctrl+SPACE or something similar that I don't remember right now.

You should be able to remove all non-US keyboard layouts and regional settings from the Control Panel, which hopefully takes care of the problem.

In Australia I can get this for about 3.2 K with a t9600 2.8GHz processor. How would you be looking then?

It has a 1680x1050 resolution which is much higher than some of the things I saw on earlier posts in this thread. Has anyone else seen that? Is it just an Australian thing?

    It's at p4laptops . com . au

You can get gloss 1680x1050 or an upgrade to Matte 1920x1200 (which is stupidly too high for a 15 inch)

I picked up the Asus G50Vt-X1 today at Best Buy.

I put Far Cry 2 on it, (running at its native resolution of 1366x768) its running very playable on very high settings in DX10 with 2x AA.

I am going to be putting Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Supreme Cammander, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and others on it soon, so stay tuned for more results.

Again at 1366x768, Call of Duty 4 ran maxed out with 4x AA - Great, Very Smooth

Crysis ran very smoothly when set on high with 2x AA in DX 9

In Australia you can only get the orange trimmed version :(

What are your issues with the keyboard guys? Does it really lag and is it fixable?

This laptop is great! I ran COD4 smoothly on max settings too! I've owned it for no longer than 2 days and I must say I'm starting to like Vista just not 64bit. Other than the ram usage I think it's pretty good, fast and reliable.

Just a quick question, does anyone know how to force Vista 64bit to use less system memory during idle and during game play?

Mine doesn't have any issues. I think howard (the OP) just got a lemon.

I don't think it'll go any lower than $1,100 this coming Sunday (11/9) at BestBuy. But who knows?

As far as a bag and mouse combo, mine didn't come with one.

I think I just got a Lemon as well, sucks......now that this laptop will be 1099 at sunday I'm debating to buy it back or not. I already have a desktop with quad core 6 gb ram and GTX 260 video so in reality i dont really need a powerful laptop and more like I need a portable..... but still kinda tempting.

IIRC, only some versions or Asus' "Republic of Gamers" laptops come with accessories like a bag, headset, and either an Asus branded MX518 or some other mouse I'm unsure of. This G50V-X1 at newegg comes with a bag/mouse.

yeah ive done that... i went to best buy and tried 5 different gaming mice there and they all made the noise no matter which port i plugged them into. and i tried those mice on 3 different g50vt-x1's, and all made the same noise. maybe a cordless mouse?

Possibly. That will also use a USB port but maybe the audio board is less sensitive to the type of noise generated by the dongle.

I guess you have the X1 so no bluetooth, otherwise I'd have recommended a bluetooth mouse...

Hi, I have just bought the G50vt-a2 from Gtech, But when looking in the box there is a little cable that looks like a S-video, o PS2, conector in one end and a RCA (video composite) but only one in the other end, so my question is does any other have this cable too? for what is this cable? I ask because in the laptop I cant find any of both conectors, or is for use with any other part that is missing in my box?? I ask becouse it is too similar with one in the photo in the manual that is in the picture of the (optional) tvTunner, there is show a little box and a little cable that can be this, but if that is true then I have missing that little box... :(

One more cuestion any body now exactly for what is the antenna port? is this for any kind of TV tunner or is it for the wifi card?? can any one confrim this??

Thanks againg for any advance,

Hey Guys, I m looking for a 2nd computer to supplement my desktop. My desktop is already quad core with GTX 260 video card, so I dont' need something too powerful. At least not until I realize this G50 from bestbuy will be 1099 this coming sunday. After reading quite a few post, it would seem like I was unlucky and got a lemon. I was hoping to get something light and portable like the new aluminum macbook 1299 or Sony Vaio SR series for 1549 or asus 13.3 in laptop for 849 to a 1000 bucks. Now this will be 1099 on sunday with 9800 video card, gets me thinking again. Albeit weighing 7 lbs... I'm probably going to go back to school, not full time but something I can carry with me. G50 is not terribly heavy but certainly more than an ultraportable.

    Any suggestions?

First, I gotta say I'll be biased since I own a G50. But I've been carrying this bad boy around in my backpack together with a 500Gb My Book, 2 power supplies, power cables, a mouse, a cooling pad, and a couple of books and it has never bugged me.

Although getting a 14.1" would be suitable for being portable. But you just won't let this deal coming on Sunday pass you by. Not to mention the power it offers. I am lovin' this laptop so far. It's not that heavy and large as a 17" laptop and is as almost as powerful as one.

One thing though, I just wish that ASUS removed the two LED strips at the back and made the border of the LCD screen thinner than what it is.

Not TF2, but I've been playing CS:Source and it is flawless. I still have to adjust to the screen resolution because I can't hit headshots anymore.

I've never had problems with the keyboard. Regarding the shut down problem, I didn't update my windows because I don't wanna deal with it. :D It did configure when I shut it down one time, but it only happened once. It's still prompting me for updates, but I just ignore it.

    LOL! :p

That cable is not useful, it is included "by default" with all ASUS notebooks regardless whether they have SVideo or not.

howard, I would suggest against buying the G50 if you don't need the power. You'd be dealing with its bulk and weight without much benefit. Would a 13.3 model (nothing much from ASUS in this range, I think they have the F6) or maybe even a netbook be more suitable for you?

Thanks EBE, my dream one would either be the apple macbook 13.3 at 1299 but all my office documents are MS... and my other dream machine is the Sony Vaio SR.. the one I want is SR 290 which is 1549 dollars which kinda holds me back.. I have the money just not sure if its wise to spend it on that..... but yea I agree, not sure if G50's power is needed for me..

Sigh.. today (11/8) is the last day for 24 month no payment no interset for sony, well, supposedly, and I was gonna take advantage of it, but its at a shopping center my friend just went to and she said the traffic and crowd was crazy as hell, so I didnt go. Guess either no sony for me or I will just wait for the next special finance to come around.

Since you guys mentioned asus, there is a new series N80 with T5800 2.0 ghz 4 gb ram 1gb 9650M GT video card for just 949 on newegg, and LED back light, seem like heck of a deal. Or I might just still pick up the G50 for 1099, with 9800 card, hard to beat.

But the OS DVD is to my knowledge a recovery DVD, not a "true" clean-install DVD. Nevertheless, it can often be used to obtain a clean install -- see the InfoBooth_FAQ, last question, for details.

    I have a stupid question..
I am planning on getting the Asus G50vt-x1 for my son, I think he will really like it from the sound of the reviews..now what I want to know is this.. The laptop has a hdmi out, does that mean that with the hdmi cable, my son can hook up to the 52" tv and play his games? Im sure dad would like that too..

so i had a Gateway FX P7811, and loved it. i got AoC on it and Assassin's creed. im an rpg'er so i loved the graphics it did with AoC.
i sold my 7811 a month ago due to losing work. finally found work again and was browsing laptops all day.

i have a real old , but reliable powerbook G4, it even has discrete 64 mb graphics on it so i used to play WoW on it, and its 12 inch. never gonna sell it but for the 4th time the charger broke >.< . not to mention the battery is good maybe 20 minutes (i consider it reliable because of the times i dropped it and it still runs) . both of those combined are probably a $100. enough with that i want a new laptop!

so far the G50VT is the only laptop thats affordable to me in the 15 inch range. the p7811 is too big.
however is the G50VT really a 16 inch?

i know the newegg version of the G50V (not vt) x1 had an upgraded processor (2.0 > 2.26) and backpack/mouse.
i'm guessing newegg might come out with somethin like this soon?

just like the 7811 this doesnt have bluetooth >.< grrrrr! yeah usb device yeah i hate having anything more than a mouse plugged into my laptop

does the memory card reader allow the use for CompactFlash cards?
i have searched but can't see any official indication of this >.<

i'm thinking this'll be sold out by the end of the week, however considering asus doesn't have mainstream recognition i wonder.

is there a way to skimp out on the $100 on tax i'd have to pay ??

I was in Best Buy the other day and I saw the G50. Beauty, those patterns on the back aren't as distracting as the pictures make them out to be. And yes, it is big...ish. Nothing to worry about. If you carried around a 17-incher, then the G50 isn't going to be a problem.

actually, i just got the HP HDX16T. yes, quick call but the coupon expires today (11/10). heres the specs i got for $849 + tax (free ship) . the link is at logicbuy , and actually the coupon is applicable at any $1299 configuration

HP HDX16t Premium Series customizable Notebook PC

    * Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    * Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)

    ....
ok so the video card is faster, but the 9600m GT AFAIK, should still be good enough for AoC, which is what i want to primarily play. other games are out there id like to try. i dont think its too far behind the 9800 GS
and for $250 less!!!!!!!! oh and around 30 less since less tax too!
and this has some added features, fingerprint reader, lowlight camera. i use msn messenger (on friends pc's because its IMPOSSIBLE (attempted) to work an MAC OS) cam a bit. fingerprint reader, not really, i dont even use a keyboard lock so whats the point.

i think HP saw this competition coming and did a way better job in price terms.

the FUNNIEST thing is that the dimensions of the HP are actually SMALLER than the ASUS. now i love asus, i have desktops that use their mobo's but this i find to be very odd.

    here is a dimensions comparison
    HP HDX16t
    14.9 (W) x 10.0" (D) x 1.31 (min H)/1.70(max H) - with Dual Lamp (dont ask me what dual lamp is)
    ASUS G50VT-X1
    14.8 (W) x 10.4 (D) x 1.6
the HP weight is .07 lbs heavier , but i'm guessing this is at the base specs, only add on i did was p7350 > p8400 .
also, a loss of 70gb of harddrive space.

*also this kicks ASUS in terms of sound. it is 7.1 capable, and on the unit itself has 4 speakers and a subwoofer. not sure how well those are but must be better.

    what do you guys think?
