video works
-
I dont remember Alex posting any temps, can you please tell me where he posted them or tell me what he got -
-
OH WAIT, you need to install fraps...sorry i forgot about that!
FOR VIDEOS TO WORK INSTALL FRAPS! -
LOL thanks for the hint. I was trying totem, mplayer, vlc, and nothing worked. -
-
My mistake the closest I can find is this
-
didn't he report cpu cores running ~55 and under 65 usually and GPU running below 80?
-
Haha... maybe I'm not (so) crazy! Seems like he stated something like that. I'll look at some of the other threads.
-
Got it!!
-
Ok, thanks. I still need to talk to him though cause I dont know if he was using his cooling pad at the time....

Here is a clip from Farcry (v1.40) on the Asus C90s
Settings were as follows:
Windows XP 32 Bit
e6700 at 2.66GHZ
3GB Corsair DDR2-667 (2GB +1GB)
160GB Seagate Momentus 7200.2
All original drivers from supplied cd except newest chipset, audio, wireless drivers
Game settings were:
2x AA, 2X AF, Vsync forced (all in Nvidia control panel)
8600M GT at 500 core/500 mem (overclocked using rivatuner)
1280x800
In game settings all on "very high" except shadow quality "medium" and lighting quality "high", bilinear. Mouse smoothing "default".
Farcry ran PERFECT, i was ver suprised at how well it did. It may even be able to handle 4x AA and 4X AF in control panel...

INSTALL FRAPS FOR VIDEO TO WORK! -
Ok, heres the deal. I suspect the memory overheating is why the laptop becomes unresponsive and then locks up when overclocking. SO, I set up a new test that blows air very lightly under the laptop so that it blows a little air across the vent where the ram is. Not much air but just as much as a cooling pad would (assuming Alex was using his cooling pad). When in overclocking mode I was able to run oblivion for a few minutes just fine and run farcry for a few minutes fine. I tabbed out of oblivion and check the cpu temps...76 degree. Also the ambient and HDD temps were the same as load in overclock mode (58 degrees) PERFECT. that way i know only the ram is being cooled and only the ram. SO, I really do believe its the ram overheating thats causing the problems....I am now going to do some further test....
EDIT: also gpu temp was the same as without the air -
BTW F.E.A.R. video should be up in an hour or so

I use a cooling pad, but when I actually turn the fans on the cooling pad on the notebook gets hotter.
-
Hotter you say that don't make sense...
-
Awesome. Is this the setup you couldn't speak of? Did that memory come with the system of is it from somewhere else?
Also, I know it is a pain in the butt, but if you could find another way to format the video? I use ubuntu linux and don't wanna mess with fraps on a laptop that could not handle Starcraft even... Don't worry about it if it is too much trouble. I would rather you get your notebook working right! -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
basically, the fans are blowing the hot air back into the computer. Just because of the way it is setup.
-
Ok good. Blowing hot air in the laptop doesnt matter as long as the air is moving (except certain cases). Ive tested that theory in desktops and laptops. NOW i need you to remove the cooling pad, let the notebook cool all the way down, boot into vista, let it sit for a while and warm up, then go into overclocking mode and run a game. make sure its on a flat surface WITHOUT cooling pad
-
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
okay, it is at 57 and 59 idling on a flat surface and image editing for about 2 hours.
-
It cant be idling and image editing at the same time. do like i said, let it cool, start it back up and let it warm up, then go into overclocking mode, and run a GAME not image editing.
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
Well it is idling now, (err, when I am not in the office), but prior I was image editing for about 2 hours.
-
Ill just wait until you get off alex, i have time

512MB ddr2-667 locked up just as fast...
-
1gb ddr2-533 stick lasted a lot longer....without air...and IN oblivion for a few moments....
-
Scratch that...tried it again and it locked up just as fast...
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
...Running RAM that is minimum speed isn't recommended... also I hope you haven't tried overclocking, because that would break it.
-
No, when in overclocking mode like I said it clocks it to 292mhz (584 effective) so its only 51mhz overclocked...and no it wont nor did it break it.
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
so wait, you were able to overclock the RAM?
-
Ok, the F.E.A.R. upload crapped out so it will be another hour or so before its posted...
-
Actually Im not sure. Since my ddr2-667 went to 292(584) i assume the ddr2-533 would too. UNLESS, the c90 has the capability of running the cpu and memory out of sync. Ill look in into that now. -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
No computer can do that... I'm pretty sure it isn't possible... The FSB can only react as fast as it gets the info, so it is naturally limited by the RAM speed.
-
Also, Ken has a new bios that fixes the memory showing the incorrect speeds...so....in case you didnt know it shows ddr2-667 as pc24200 and shows ddr2-533 as ddr2-3200 during the bios boot. You have to disable the logo in bios to see it. This is obviously underclocking the memory in windows also hence my muliple times saying 292mhz (584 effective) in past pages. This may be part of the problem with mine but I doubt it as your is probably underclocking too and yours seems to be running fine.
-
-
Again, this is why i really need you to test yours out the way i mentioned. Im still trying other things while i wait though. I have plenty of time to...
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
Okay, tell me exactly what you need, I thought I had done everything.
-
Ok, in gaming mode the ddr2-533 goes to 219mhz(438 effective). I dont know if this is related to the lockups until I find someone that can say for SURE theres doenst overheat in gaming mode while playing a game under load.
-
I need you to remove the cooling pad, turn it off and let the notebook cool all the way down, boot into vista, let it sit for a while and warm up, then go into overclocking mode and run a game. make sure its on a flat surface WITHOUT cooling pad.
I really need you to do it exactly like that so that we can be in sync with out testing methods for consistency. -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
okay, if I were able to boot into a game right now, without a cooling pad and overclocked, and it works, would that be sufficient?
-
I really need you to do it exactly as I said
-
It would also help to use cpu-z to verify that the fsb actually chages when you go into overclock mode....cause it may not be. Youll probably want to know...
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
mmm k, if it will help.
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
I know it does. Unless SpeedFan, FutureMark and NHC are lying to me. Exactly 2929 MHz.
-
Ok perfect.
