There's already one coming with the c90p for sure. It was a 8700M GT at CES but there might be othert cards when it will be released

Anyway, dunna what happened but the onscreen miphone now WORKS. I can actually use it to talk on MSN with a 10db boost.

EDIT: nvm, doesn't work when the FANs are running =/

Well, the C90P at the CES had one, as MXM II, they probably were able to make it smaller. Although MXM II is only 25W rather than 35W, I think the 8700 can be made with a 25W TDP since people with the Dells have been able to overclock their 8600M GT 650mhz on the core.

Regardless, if all I have to look forward to in the near future for my c90s investment is an 8700m im going to be severely disappointed. It's just an overclocked 8600m - basically to 8600GT desktop levels.

I'd rather have better cooling than a new video card, although better cooling AND a new video card is pretty sexy.

And thats the gddr3 card not the ddr2 which can reach the 8700 but at very high temps and such.

my card can't reach that ****, ever. I'm using the 167 drivers Asus put out which doesn't allow software OC, and I don't feel like doing a BIOS OC. On the old drivers my card would get up to 105C just gaming, no OC. I had to underclock it a lot for it to not overheat. I think Asus got a bad batch, or something, everyone's card sucks and gddr3 cards in the Apple's can OC very very nicely.

    I'm with you there.

I love my C90, I didn't expect to last forever, it is a great mobile desktop replacement though.

However, the C90P and 8700M are not even worth consideration. There's almost no changes across the board on either...its an imbetween product to raise extra cash for them only, sounds like.

No engineering feats of amazement, no redesigning/changing of the model, I mean really could you tell a c90S form a c90p from a distance? Doubted.

Really people are heading on the next gen of cards past the current series for ATI and NV and we're talking another card same gen? Even if it was an 8800 mobile in the thing (which clearly is not intended for us), it'd be behind soon due to next gen coming.

WTF kind of crack are you on? I'm sorry if I sound like a troll here, but the whole point of the C90P is a simple upgrade to the S using the same size form factor. The 8700M maybe the most minor upgrade to the C90, but your also getting no heatsinks and a new mobo with a new chipset that will allow you to upgrade to the newer 45nm processors and give you full 1333FSB. This notebook is suppose to bring a barebone almost desktop like freedom to a notebook and if you haven't looked around at some of the other threads here, there is talk of upgradeable motherboard, something almost unheard of in a notebook. I love the idea of the C90 series and the C90P is so much more then just a new letter and a new GPU.

The engineering feat here is that the c90p would be more powerfull then most other laptops in the 2000$ above range at a much lower price. Sure 8800 is more powerfull then 8700. A hemi equipped charger is also more powerfull then your speedy mustang but at what price. c90p would rival the power of 2500$ laptops at a fraction of the price. that is the feat. Aside from that it takes the newer untel cpu and it does use the 8700gt video card in a chassis that is relatively small and cheap.

You did seem a little ad hominem, but no offense was taken :)

New heatsinks, motherboard and graphics card in this case add future potential in a good way but people are going to be heading beyond 45nm pretty soon, honestly. 45NM may be new to consumers and new to the product line but they already have plans to go beyond it. Also rumored was a 9 series mobile. So what happens to the 8700M at that point? What happens to the overclocking capability (and its locked/not-ness) per processor of the 45nm series? We don't have a guarantee that all 45NM will share the same architecture either, which means 2core vs 4core vs skulltrail may not share the same socket aka you are screwed. This is almost guaranteed, even. LGA 771 is not LGA 775 even though it has backwards capability to 775. the 45NM in a c90p? Probably 775. Get where I'm goin?

As usual Ranger, we don't always agree but it's good to know there are others out there that know as much (or more commonly more) than I do :)

There is already rumors of 9600 GT coming to the C90 series.

As for your socket compatibility and restriction, I can't see how this inferior to other notebooks platforms on the Santa Rosa or even the Upcoming Montevina limited to Socket P, and as history has already indicated that only 12-16 months ago that the Napa platform was using the Socket M format. At least the 775 socket will stay for a longer period of time before it all changes, and there will be far more processors released for 775 compared to Socket P. I don't know what your getting at...

I never said it was inferior :) I mean we're talking about a desktop processor again, which means far greater speeds than anything mobile side. How or where do we have any proof of how long 775 will be around before 771 becomes mainstream? This was my concern, and risk of getting into any new socket type.

What I mean is with the P coming out, is what happens with P being 775 if the next desktop processors are 771?

Well, there's nothing we can do about that can we? I mean, even current desktops pose the same upgradability issue if your concerned about 771(I thought 771 was intended for server platforms only?). I don't think we can worry that far ahead and when we do, it's likely 1-2 years from now and we'll be looking at a whole new different mobile solution...

AM2 was a nice kick in the balls if you believed 939 was finally coming into its own. I always believed it was a waste because the first AM2 chips weren't upgrades from 939, the only real difference was DDR2 which really couldn't be fully utilized. I'm not so sure now with the new AMD chips though. I still have a 939 board at home playing anything I through at it on high and ultra high...except Crysis.

I hope Intel doesn't go that route, its what helped them over take AMD finally. It would be poor for them not to have learned from AMD's mistakes. If they hadn't decide to release the incomplete quad cores as Core 2 Duo, I wonder where we would be today.

The 8700 is what was in it at CES. The C90S had a GF 7700..... If it only comes arround june-july, I still think a 9600M GT might be available.

I agree 100%. That was kinda what I said though and what I meant when I said "This was my concern, and risk of getting into any new socket type." :) Also yes, they took skulltrail onto a desktop by using a server motherboard, and they showed that such an idea was a bad idea in the reviews (not that it was slow, but the areas where a server mobo is not made geared for gaming).

Edit: Geared, I agree with you too, it is a good thing for the price point, it just doesn't seem to be a sign of a maturing design nor a significant technical change really. Car wise this is like going from an 06 mustang to an 07 mustang (with improvements of course), not like going from an 06+ civic from a 01-05 civic (significant redesign and very large performance increases). Of course those people who don't have the mustang indeed have no idea what they're missing out :)

ps, All cs90 owners beware of screws coming loose, the fan seems to have rattled a screw loose on the lil power module adjacent the heat fins for the gpu.. bit of a scare, my systems fans went nuts on startup.........

I feel confident that the c90p will feature a 9600gt, how much of an upgrade that will be from the 8600gt tho has to be scene.

I would benefit from the fact I can finally use 4gb of ram (or even 3 in my case) and the faster cpu would be great too since both ram and cpu are very big in video editing.

I doubt even with heatsink upgrades and things that a 8800will be in here. I mean alienware has a 15" with a 8800 in it but isnt it really thick? The sheer size and thickness of the C90S really surprised people it is no bigger than your regular 15" notebook even tho it has the desktop cpu in there and the upgradeable gpu. I hear alienware has laptops that feel like they are going to melt because they are so hot. Throw in the fact that your already adding ALOT of heat to the mix due to a full fledged desktop cpu and I just dont see it happening.

Still a 9600gt will play games, and the rest of the system will be top notch for anything else you want it to do, just remember your electrical umbilical cord.

8700 still befuddles me. First of all an mxm III card. Regardless its time for the 9 series so unless Asus isn't like Sager who lets stuff slip then even thats dissapointing.

You know with all the impoved heat disipation letting them place a pretty hot 8700gt (with ddr3 memory too!) and a new cpu for just over 3ghz... Makes you wonder why they didnt try to get a quad core in there. Even if it was say limited to 2.6ghz (or heck even lower 2.4 would be fine) it would be a cool option and in many cases a quad @ 2.4 would beat a dual a 3.1.

We had rumors here and there that quad core works in the C90S, and even people with links to people selling the c90s with a quad core, but not once yet has sombody here on the forums I think tried it or confirmed it. However if there was a chance, the chance seems much higher now with the new model.

Also since the C90P is based on the P35, I wonder if it could ever support DDR3 for the system memory. Memory is one of the big heat producing parts of a laptop and while DDR2 is cheaper and still performing better in most cases, a laptop may benefit really well from DDR3 just for the temp drop. I dont even think there is DDR3 So-Dimms yet tho. I have to go see right now :p

sure enough: I didnt see it at newegg.com for sale but it looks like it is here or will be here soon:

    http://www.micron.com/products/modules/sodimm/
    http://www.dvhardware.net/article26498.html

So lets hope they push for DDR3 support, that would be yet another key feature up the C90P's sleeve to help it be a valid upgrade over the C90S and more appealing to new buyers.

    2nd edit: Crucial sells it :p http://www.crucial.com//store/listm...00~~DDR3 PC3-12800~~DDR3 PC3-16000~/list.html

    Freaking expensive tho.

Guys! Are we forgetting the C90P is a 15" notebook? a 8700GT is unheard of (unless Asus wants to turn the C90P to an m15x with heat issues)! It's still very possible to see a quad core on the C90 series, but it'll probably be in the next refresh.
As for DDR3 system memory... i think we still need to wait at least another year or two for DDR3 ram to become mainstream. I have another friend working in a company in Taiwan that makes ram and just a few months ago he got samples of 200pin SODIMM DDR3 ram - so i'm assuming it'll be a little while before DDR3 laptop ram will be offered to the public.

well its there for public that one link I have above for crucial you can buy it. I for one am all for DDR2 because I have done the research and DDR3 is not worth it. Performance wise because its latencies are so high its extra bandwidth in most cases doesn't make up for it and DDR2 meet or beat it. Price wise its not even a question.

I was just saying for a laptop it makes more sense tho since it will run cooler (not sure how much cooler) and was just noting the P35 chipset supports DDR3 so even if its not economical they should put the support in there as to not shoot themselves in the foot at a later date when it is. Even if it never is its nice filler for the laptops resume. You can never have too many options.

I will probably personally test a quad core in the c90p as long as I can find one dirt cheap to test it with, I cant afford to just buy stuff for testing and not get some kind of compensation for it.

Maybe I can ask Ken to do it when the time comes, he may have access to test hardware and thus not have any expense, I just dont know if he will be allowed to test it since its not officially supported.

oh wow.. just saw your link to the DD3 ram... damn! $135 for a stick of 1gb?? yea.. I don't think the price justifies the performance increase and for now, it'll be available exclusively to ppl with spare change.
Even though the P35 chipset supports DDR3, I think Asus still needs to release a proper bios for it to work i think (I might be wrong though)

Yeah the bios and chipset drivers would need to support it. thats why I mean they need to just atleast toss it in there and not cut it out early.

There are people out there with too much spare change that unfortuantly :p

Plus like I said its just like a resume for the computer. Having a whole list of options/abilities that takes up a page is more impressive than just 4 or 5 even if most of them are things you will never use or need. Thats just sales and marketing.

DDR2 used to be super expensive and not better than DDR, so DDR3 is going to do the same I am sure. It will evolve and be forced on the market very fast and probably soon so seeing the option there would just be really nice.
