    Thanks for pointing this out!
Just to clarify, though, are you referring to the "Digital Flat Panel Settings" ?
and in that case, the options corresponding to your list are:
    1) Display adapter scaling
    2) Centered output
    3) Fixed aspect ratio scaling

    Edit:
Actually, nevermind about my question. Right clicking for the "What's this?" tooltips clarified things for me.
I agree; centered output looks best.
Thanks again for pointing out this option!

Hello everyone, im another ower of the asus a8js h22h since a couple of months. By the moment everything is great about it (except the scratches i have in the top  , just a couple, but it would be better if there were none). I would like to buy a sleeve for the laptop, i have been checking some Tucano, but i am not sure if they will fit fine. Have any of you bought some strong sleeve, but not too big, i want to put the a8js in it, and then the sleeve in my bagpack (a normal one).

    Thanks for the help!

Does anybody know if underclocking the GPU has an effect on battery life ?

Or does it have more to do with actually using the 3D capabilities of the card ?

    Thanks

I bought Tucano Folder M 14.1 for this laptop. It's a really tight fit, but I think thats only a good thing. The laptop only fits in one way, with the "up" side ahead (the side with webcam).

And I also bought Osprey Focus backpack (the M/L version) http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3015

It's the best backpack I've ever had and the laptop fits in perfectly. You can stuff in as much things as you can and its still comfortable to carry. I can really recommend this one if someone needs a good backpack with plenty of space! :)

Oh, thats great that the tucano 14,1 fit the a8js, i wasnt very sure about it, the measures on their web site looked a bit small. Im buying it, cause the other one, costs me the double price (almost 100$!) to send it to Spain, and thats too much...If i could get it in europe..

Where is this exactly please, I can't find it -- but I've changed my drivers from stock so the options might have changed. I have a few programs I'd love to run with bars opposed to stretched but can't find any way of doing it..

I would think it's associated with the graphics driver... but in any case, I can access it from a tray icon (called "NVIDIA Settings" > NVIDIA Display > Laptop Display) or from the desktop context menu (item called "NVIIDIA Display" > Laptop Display).
    Hope that helps...

I see where you mean but I don't see any options for how it handles 4:3 ratio resolutions.. possibly you didn't understand what I was asking?

I have a couple applications which must run in fullscreen mode, and do not have widescreen support. This means it gets stretched to fill the screen and becomes distorted -- I don't want this distortion, I want the monitor/gfx card to apply bars down the left and right and use a 4:3 resolution for the screen.

Its right there. At least in the old control panel. Just select nView display mode from left side menu and then press the button on the lower right corner, it should say something like device settings. Then choose the second from the top option. Then you are there :)

I don't have english control panel so it's hard to help people :s

If you can indeed access the same thing as what I am referring to, then you should see an option called "Digital Flat Panel Settings" in a pop-out menu on the left-hand side. (If you don't see the menu, you should see a small green button with a white arrowhead pointing to the left, located on the left-hand side of the settings panel. Press that, and the pop-out menu will appear.)
Once you select the aforementioned menu item, then you should see a radio-button list with the options you are looking for, along with a "preview".
I hope my description/explanation is clear enough...

Personally I can't access it directly from Control Panel.
Indirectly I can get it by: Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> GeForce Go 7700

no. The only solution is to use two batteries

or use an igo type of device.

the 6 cell that comes with it has decent life for a 6 cell, so owning 2 would give you 5 hours life just with a switch in the middle.

This is a compromise you have to make with the a8js.

Hey everyone, yesterday I think I probably read every page of this thread, as several others in this forum and in the "What Notebook Should I Get Forum?" I think I am close to being sold on the A8Js, especially after tearing my hair out for several weeks trying to find the specs I wanted in some of the notebooks made by bigger name brands. I still have a few reservations and questions.

Very quickly, the type of notebook I'm looking for -- under $2000, but preferably in the $1500-$1700 range. No bigger than 15.4", or heavier than 6 or 7 pounds. I am a grad student so it needs to be portable but I also want a relatively powerful gaming notebook. But I don't want it to look like a gaming notebook. ;) Which is kind of what holds me back on the G1, or Alienware/XPS for that matter (that and the prices ...) I will be carting this around classes, work (as a grad assistant, so my bosses are also my professors), and next year in front of students I'll be teaching. I need my dignity. :p

Gaming -- I play The Sims 2. I'm sure people don't think this is a big deal, but I play with all Expansion Packs, and I want the game to be played with the highest settings and speed possible. (Plus the next EP which comes out this February will be introducing weather, which I can tell is going to be a huge system hog.) My current desktop only has an entry level GeForce FX card, but has run the game surprisingly well ... but I would really like it if I could get some of the incredibly high res and bright graphics I've seen some people have.

These are the other models I am looking at besides the A8Js: the Asus F3Jp (besides the slightly worse graphics card and the "graininess" issue, does anyone know why this was less popular?), the Dell Inspiron E1505, the HP dv6000t, and the Vaio FE790. All of those last three have worser graphics card but still just about the same price, so there should be no contest. However ...

    1) How have you guys found the tech support/warranty for Asus? I know they only have weekday hours for tech support. Despite that, have they been pretty helpful otherwise? Those of you who have had problems and needed to send it back, did everything go smoothly? Did you deal with the resellers/retailers or directly with Asus?

    2) Exactly how many people are having the noise issue? And just how disruptive is it? If I had it on in a classroom with other people, would it disturb students? Or would the fan just not even go on if I wasn't using the notebook for anything demanding (only Word or an internet browser)?

    3) Exactly how big is the sweet spot for viewing the screen? I mean, how far at an angle do you have to be for the view to get bad?

    4) Do you think Asus will end up fixing any of these issues?

    Theres no real noise issue

couldnt possibly hear it in a library I use mine in a library every day. quieter than almost all the other notebooks.
No the fan doesnt go on unless you are playing a 3d game. Even when its on you couldnt hear it in a library.

The viewing angle is worse than most you should be right in front of it.

    4. no....

With light usage (word processing, web browser...) I don't think noise is really an issue either. There's a sound when the hard drive is accessed, but the keyboard is louder than that. I do find that the DVD drive can be loud though.

Speaking of the DVD drive, is it just me or do other users feel the vibrations in the palm rest when the DVD is reading/writing? I quite often notice this; I think typically when a DVD or CD is first accessed (after being idle), or when writing. I haven't compared to other laptops yet (and this is my first laptop personally).

Got a question guys, I used a differend AC/DC adapter to charge my Laptop yesterday. It had similar values (20V and 3.75A) now, on the back of the notebook it says 19V and 4.74 A. The notebook works fine without any problems or indication of damage, I am a little paranoid, can this have possibly damaged my device?

    Thanks

The smart thing is to get the correct adapter. I'm not an electrical genius, but I would first be worried about premature battery death. 1 more amp means that it can supply more power-flow (like water pressure) than the battery is optimally spec'd for, yes no?. I'm not sure if that means it WILL but it would be my first concern. Extra flow, extra heat, more crystalization with in the battery cells, over charging..death. Similarly, 1 volt less is probably within it's tolerance, but still not good, resulting in a computer that works.. for now anyways

There are devices that will charge up your laptop battery on the go, so basicaly you carry 1 extra battery, that is bigger, and yuo can attach it, and it will charge your laptop battery, and other devices too.

My fan is ALWAYS on, although not very loud, I do notice it in everyday use. I would love for the fan to go on only when there is load, and switch off/spin down when idle or typing a Word document.

But my A8J's fan does not switch off/spin down, as reported by a few others as well? Hopefully ASUS will address this "issue" in a future BIOS-release. I really don't think the fan needs to be on constantly, because at times there is just cold air flowing out of it.

Anyone had problems with their burner? It seems a little sporadic to me. It get a lot of errors during finalization and I can't seem to fully "fill" a 700mb CD. I've tried a couple different cdr brands and three different burning programs (the included Nero, XPBurnerPro, and DeepBurner), and its a little tricky to get it burn properly. I've made some DVD's and those seem to be more reliable.

    yes it can be installed.

The thing is an a8js can come with windows vista 64

There would almost be no possible use for xp pro 64 on it.

It would be a computer geek challenge to find a use for xp 64 pro

when you get xp pro 32 and xp business 64 with the machine

There is a bug with the instant fun button. If you press it you can't toggle it to off (and the caps lock led will also stop working) and it will keep autostarting the useless instant fun app. The only way to get back to normal is to do a complete power down. So in short don't use the instant fun button at all. I can't see why you would want to do that anyways. Wish you could map the buttons to whatever you wanted.

Lol, ssorry - i know :D But i am just in the progress of transfering a huge amount of data between the old laptop an the new.. so turning it off isnt possible for me right now :D

    Some other questions.

    1) I cant get BT to work, when i press the button the LED doesnt turn on. Where to find drivers/how to get it to work? (it is the european model with BT)

    2) What the hell is the net4switch application? :D

If you used the disc that came with the box you should have everything you need. Just plug in your BT device and it should work. If not there are drivers to dl from asus.com download section.
Net4switch has to do with the wlan, I think it helps preserve settings if you connect to a lot of different networks. I deinstalled it because it does nothing that xp or Intel PROSet can't handle.

Is it nessasary to install all the hotfixes? I have only installed the latest one.

The MultiFrame App seems quite fancy, however; is it really usefull in everyday use?

    Thx
