Dunno, I'm using the xp disk that came with the box and deinstalled the stuff I didn't want. So I'm not sure what hotfixes came with that system.
I got rid of multiframe, don't need it.

Hey everyone, I know some of you have been overclocking the GPU. What temps are you reading? and what temps do you think are safe to operate at?

    My current readings:
    Idle: 55C
    Loaded (500/490 oc): 78C
(where loaded is playing FEAR for half hour)

that is very cool. no need for any cooling pad as long as you trust that temperature gauge.
nvidia has the auto shut down temperature for this gpu at 110 c if that helps you figure...

I dont overclock regularly but i did to do a bunch of tests when my machine was new.

The ram doesnt go above 497 so it doesnt get any hotter.

Ok, I have now made the first benchmark:

4290 in 3dMark05. I believe this is within the normal of the A8Js'?

    Questions:
    1) I am not able to hibernate, again I must be missing some drivers or what?Because out of the box it was possible...

    2) A notebook sleeve; As I dont live in the US, but in Denmark, I am not able to use all the links for sleeves provided on this forum. I cant find any sleeve in DK/EU i think would fit, because they are all for iBooks/macbooks... Any suggestions og a good brand that may offer a good sleeve for the A8Js?

    Thx

    if you have 2 gb

the reason is fixed in a windows hotfix

It is because the ram gets fragmented.

    Its on the microsoft site.

If you cant find it let me know ill look it up for you.

I bought tucano sleeve for 14,1 inch laptops. It's a very tight fit, but thats only a good thing in my opinion :) I'm sure you can find those in Denmark too. At least we have those in Finland.

Thx, I have actually seen those in DK, however only for 14" iBooks.
Why is it a good thing that it is a "very tight fit"?
    For shock absorption, or??

It is a better idea to keep the notebook in a sleeve, while transporting it in a back like the one provided with the machine by asus right? Because the padding of the bag provided is not so thick

    Edit:
Is this the one you have?

http://www.getmore.dk/templates/imw...#37;2Dm-141&GroupGuid=1140&SelectedGroup=1140 I know it is in danish, but the item code must be the same: bf-m-141

    Yes, thats the same :)

I meant that the laptop is easier to handle in sleeve when the laptop fits there exactly. A8Js only fits there one way btw.

I had what might be a good idea the other day

I have a 60 gb 2.5 inch external hard drive

eventually Im going to get another case for the 100 gb one and put in a larger 7200 rpm one in the laptop

Ok so then i will have 2 cases. What Im thinking of doing is putting velcrow on them both, and on the bottom of my a8js towards the back.

put both cases facing out and connecting to the two usb ports in the back.
This would make the notebook rise 1/2 inch or so.

This way i could keep all the hard drives connected and not have to recconnect them when i turn it on and off

And if I want it to be light again just pull them off.

Are any of you feeling this idea?

    lol stamar..
I like the idea of having the 100 GB (120 in my case) in an external enclosere and putting af 7200RPM drive in the a8js.. However I am not to fondt of starting to put velcro on it :)

Actually, I am already thinking of getting another GB of memory.
How to see which type of RAM i must get? And does it have tobe exactly same brand as the ones already installed?

    Cheers

    EDIT**

Do you think these will fit?

Both with specs and pins? So I can run DUAL with the other stick?

    That kind is fine

any laptop ddr2 with the number 5300 or 5400 should work in dual channel.

I got ocz brand and it works in dual channel with the stock ram

Looks like it's meant to give better compatibility with Vista. Also, I noticed that XP found a new device on startup, High precision event timer. Dunno, maybe the differences between 207 and 210 are easier to spot when running Vista.

So I see that some people are experiencing their fan spinning on the A8Js full time instead of turning off when idle. Is this an issue with all A8Js owners or only a select few?

I believe that the fan functions the same way on every A8Js. Some people just find it annoying and some people don't.

The fan is constantly spinning even if the computer is just idle. The noise is not that loud, but you definitely can hear it in a quiet room. You can use notebook hardware control to set up acpi settings in a way that the fan only starts up when the temperature reaches certain limit, if you really can't stand the fan spinning all the time. Theres a post in this forum regarding acpi setup.

Try installing the hotfixes on the asus driver cd :)

And theres this thread here on the forums too: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60416

So basically you have to install this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256 , check the registry after reboot that there really is the correct key and modify your boot.ini to contain /usepmtimer. You can find better information on the link to the forums.

Hi everyone, I've read every page of this thread tonight and cant seem to find out if this laptop can accommodate an extra battery in the drive bay that replaces the cd-rom? Right now i am looking at this laptop and the G1 which i hear can have a drive bay battery because battery life is fairly important to me and i could care less about a cd/dvd burner anyways. Thanks!

You cannot do that on the A8js, perhaps you're refering to the W3j which is also a 14" laptop that has a swappable optical drive bay.

    Hmm, I obtained following results:

Before hotfix and editing of reg and boot in 3dmark06:

    2743 with a CPU score of 1708.

    After:
    2744 with a CPU score of 1705

So it has slightly decreased my cpu performance, how can this be??

The V1 has the modular bay for battery, dvd, extra hard drive. The G1 does not.

Thank you for the reply's i appreciate it! Has anyone noticed any ghosting on their A8J while playing games as i heard the response time of the lcd was fairly high..around 25ms? I'm still up in the air between the A8j and G1 and it seems to be coming down to the display and build quality right now sense they are both gaming machines :)

Tissie, such a small decrease is nothing. Its less than 1%! If you run the benchmark again, you'll get another score, lower or higher. This varies due to the nature of Windows and the many programs running. Such variances are due to background 'noise' so to say. This could be due to some program running some periodic process, windows moving around the paging file, etc, dozens and dozens of reasons. So care for significant changes (say, 5% or more), not tiny things like this.

Alright, this really is interesting

So are you saying that black actually is black on the lcd? Does the fan spin all the time even when just idling? Is it usa or euro version?

If there really exists A8Js's without light leakage, my baby is so going to a warranty trip. Or multiple if that is needed...

I am sure it wasnt installed, as i checked the installed hotfixes. Also the 'Throttle' key in the registry wasnt there, and just the normal boot.ini. So almost sure it wasnt installed at first..

About light leakage: Mine has it too, but it is very very little, i dont notice it, unless i look for it.

I was wondering how bad everyone who has gamed on one of these thinks the ghosting is on the lcd? I'm going to pull the trigger on this or a G1 tomorrow and the only thing stopping me from buying the A8js is the possibility of ghosting while playing games. Thanks for any help!

It's not that bad. It hasn't bothered me at all. Maybe if you are used to a very fast desktop lcd, ghosting might irritate you. But still, I think that ghosting shouldn't be a reason to choose G1 over A8Js. Fps games like Quake 4 or Battlefield 2 look very nice on this lcd panel.

Think it this way, G1 lcd has a bigger resolution so not all games will play smoothly on that resolution. So you have to change to for example to 1440*900 and the picture won't be as clear as in the native resolution. On the other hand, the same game runs fine at 1440*900 on A8Js and the picture looks very crisp. Although GeForce Go 7700 is a fast card, it can't handle every new game in a big resolution. G1 might still scale a picture really nice, dunno.
