Hi, just wanted to tell you guys that I got an A8Js in Taipei, Taiwan. It came with Vista Premium installed, 160 Gb HD, 2 Gb RAM, and has the AUO screen, with some slight lightleakage at the bottom. Well, you really don't notice it... nothing to be worried about.

However, I am still experimenting with the screen... It feels the colors are a bit washed out, not sure how I should explain it. Not sure if this is because of Vista and the aero theme... Everything feels so faint and transparent... I miss the strong colors from XP.

Anyone got a good color profile to recommend?

Try turning on nVidias Digital Vibrance, you'll find it in the nVidia Control Panel.

I have been debating buying a A8JS for a week now, after reading through all 86 pages ( lol at that ) I sent a few emails to different vendors ( mainly milestonepc.com and gentechpc.com ) to see if they would be able to guarantee that my LCD panel would be a CMO instead of the older AUO panels that came on the original units and if it was an inferior AUO if they would be able to replace it with the better CMO panel.

I received this reply from Ken at gentechpc.com almost instantly after emailing the question:
"Old AUO LCD must be the older model A8JS 4S034P, the new A8JS 4S024C is the CMO LCD."
I have not received a reply from milestonepc.com yet regarding the same question. Take that as you will.

I own a A8JS 4S034P with a CMO screen. Its a surpurb screen, displays really bright with no dark washed out areas.

How do you install 1gb rams into this laptop? I opened the cpu door and only see one slot. Where does the other one go?

Also why does the touch pad reset everytime I restart the laptop? Anyone know a fixed for this?

Hi, first, I am new to here. Before I bought a a8js, this forum gave me so much information which helped me to make the decision. Now i think i made the right decision! I like everything in a8js, but there is just a little issue that bugs me. KEYBOARD FLEX!!! on the area surrounding f1,f2,f2, 1,2 and 3. I could hear click-sound when i pretty it a little harder. But if not, then everything is alright. Recently, I just received a new keyboard from ASUS(free!!) when i told them the issue, but I am too stupid to take the keyboard off, that I had to sent it back to ASUS, which i believe that they claimed they had replaced a new keyboard for me. Now i am still experiencing flex on the same area. By the time i figure out how to install the new keyboard properly (another brand new keyboard just sits there), I will install the new one myself. AHHHH!! Anyway, this one is still good except when i am using f3. ANYone experience the same issue? or anyone has a guide to replace the keyboard?

they are stacked but also one is 1/2 inch forward of the first one. The open one is on top then...

Ok you put the dim in its slot at 45 degree angle then you push it back flat and put the metal peices around it to hold it in place.

Hmmmm nope, can't say I have that problem. Although, I completely wiped the HD clean and then put on my own copy of Windows XP Pro, and then installed all the drivers on the drivers CD to include the hotfix's. I believe one of the fixes dealt with the touchpad, but dont quote me. Give it a shot!

I mentioned this problem several times throughout this thread. Mine included keys above and to the left of "E". "Tab" was the worst though... it was a little wobbly as well. I had initially thought it might "break in", but eventually went to the service centre in Markham to see if they could do anything about it. They replaced the keyboard in about 15 min (including paperwork!) and it was all good. Recently though, I've noticed that my F1, F2, F3 keys are a little "spongy" like before... but I can definitely live with it. I might get it replaced again when I have spare time, and before my warranty expires...

I upgraded to the Seagate 7200RPM drive. I don't recommend it, its not worth the price. I have not noticed any difference. In fact, I think it is louder. I am tempted to put the 5400 back in there.

That should make a difference from 100 gb 5400

Make sure to research and find benchmarks for the the 7200rpm drive before you put it in. A few months ago I was using a 2.5" Hitatchi 100gb 7200prm drive and according to benchmarks it was equal to or slightly slower than most 5400prm ones of the same size. In my opinion 7200rpm laptop drives aren't worth it.

its not the rpms, its the size.

Because my 5400 rpm is 100 gb, the 160 gb one will have a faster head because the platter size is the same but more data is on it, so each rpm reads more data.

Then its also spinning faster so the access time is lower. It will be significantly faster than your 100 gb one.

Just the rpm change of 5400 to 7200 is not a huge differents, its 1.3 times faster access time. the 160 gb platter is 1.6 times faster thoroughput. Both of those together are going to be a big difference.

    Im sorry I dont know.

Normally the top line hard drive goes for 250$ when its new.

This one though i expect to cost 200$

The reason I know its coming soon is the models with it are on roadmaps, also the 100 gb 7200 rpm seagate hd is out of stock. Shouldnt be long but I have no exact date.

I don't know how many of your guys who talked about the AUO and CMO difference had the chance to compare them side by side.

The other day, we had a customer read this thread and walked into our Canadian show room to compare AUO and CMO. He adjusted both laptop screen to multiple angels, multiple brightness, his conclusion was the AUO screen is brighter, the CMO is darker, other than this, he couldn't tell any difference, I was there as well, I totally agreed what he said. Actually my eyes felt more comfortable with the brighter AUO.

If you guys doubt about what I said, you can vote one representive to visit our Canadian show room to compare them and give the public an answer to this big topic/confusion. I think coriolis is a good candidate you can trust :)

I got my a8js from newegg and it has the CMO screen.

So far I am very pleased with the laptop. One question that hopefully someone can answer: for some reason every time the laptop boots up or resumes, windows media center starts up, but i don't see an option to turn it off anywhere

I have written into this site about the AUO screen on my laptop complaining about how horrible it looks. But after using it for a few weeks I have become quite used to it and kind of, actually, like it. Like Milestonepc.com says, the screen is very very bright. Sometimes, like when its dark in the room, the screen is actually a little too bright. I feel like I have a flashlight glaring into my eyes. So I'm actually quite happy with the laptop and the AUO screen. When I compare it to my previous laptop (Dell 700m) I don't really get the feeling that my screen is inferior anymore. One thing I have noticed is that the NVIDIA driver that I use influences the brightness of the screen. I have been using the 100.64 driver with the modified .inf file from Laptopvideo2go and it works just fine. After I installed the most recent driver (101.41) with the modified .inf file the screen doesn't light up as brightly. So I went back to the 100.64 driver because it is much much brighter.

Yes most new users when they see the screen have a negative impression.
If you go back to the beginning of the thread I gave a negative impression when my screen was new because *it has the worst vertical viewing angle I have ever seen*

But after you use it for a while and you compare it side by side to almost any screen, and certainly to any laptop lcd 14 inches or smaller youll see its outstanding. Unless you want a vertical viewing angle.

AUO screen PROBABLY has more light leakage than a cmo screen. Other than that they should be extremely similar because they are sold for the same purpose.

Most users dont come back after using it for a few weeks. Ive put my screen side by side with 2k computers and it has a way better screen than say, mac book pro or toshiba p100 or etc almost anything you can see in a retail store. Very bright with high contrast.

I dont care about minor light leakage but if you do you might not think so.

Anyone running with Vista x64 since the launch? I was running it around mid december when i got the business release version through school, and abandoned it because of lack of drivers and support.

Now after the launch there should be enough support right? Do the new A8JS come with vista x86 or x64 too.

Is there any store near Washington DC or northern Virginia where I can take a look at a A8JS? The screen is what is really troubling me with people coming up with various claims about AUO and CMO and nothing conclusive. It's at a point where I have decided that I am not getting a A8JS even if it comes with a CMO screen unless I look at it physically first. I might have to go with the Sony SZ after taking a look at it if no store carries ASUS notebooks locally.

Hi, yeah that was me. I purchased a A8Js from MilestonePC.com (Great service BTW) and I compared the two screens side by side (AUO and CMO) for about 30mins to an hour and my conclusion was that the AUO screen did seem brighter and display a Whiter White. As for light leakage, it was day time and the store there is well lit so I couldn't find any difference, however that could be based on the lighting conditions. The Viewing angle on CMO in my opinion was marginally better by a few degrees but I wouldn't consider it high selling point as the difference is very minimal.

Overall they both have good screens. Both are not as white as I would like, but again I'm comparing it to a 20" Desktop Display that is much brighter than any Notebook screen I have ever looked at. If you are more concerned about having a slightly brighter screen then go with the AUO if you want slightly better vertical viewing angles then go with the CMO. However like I said above the differences are VERY minimal and not even noticeable unless you place the screen side by side and analyze them closely.

Don't be too concerned with the screen you get, they both better than the average notebook display out there. The most important thing is that the A8Js is a great notebook and you will be please with it regardless of the screen it comes with.

I was also looking at the Sony SZ as one of my Notebook options. In terms of the Screens, from my observations the Sony does have the nicer looking screen (with a price tag to match). Keep in mind though, the Sony SZ display is only 12" and offers a resolution of 1280 x 800. Where as the A8Js is 14" with a 1440 x 900 resolution, and I'll tell you this much, its not easy finding a screen under 15.4" that has a higher resolution than 1280 x 800. This was the selling point for me along with the raw power this Notebook offers. If screen realestate is important to you then definitively go with the A8Js.

Don't be fooled by some peoples comments on the forums, the A8Js still has a great screen and is better than most Notebook screens I'v looked at.

I thought the Sony SZ came only with a 13.3" screen and never a 12". Anyway, you're right about the resolution being lower.

Some of you say that the screen is great and many others say it's "horrible". Hence, I cannot take your word for it and blindly order a A8JS without taking a look at it for myself first.

Since it looks like I can't find a store here which stocks A8JS's, looks like I might have to go with an SZ. As they say, a known evil is better than an unknown good.

I'm starting to think a previous post may have been correct in that we're seeing a lot of variation in the polarizer on the LCD. My screen is such that if I'm watching a dark scene in a DVD, I actually have to tilt it towards me past vertical to prevent the darkest pixels from going inverted on the top half of the screen. I can't believe they'd deliberately design the screen so that you have to tilt it towards you (by about 10 degrees) for proper blacks.

I also think different people are sensitive to different aspects of the screen. I'm pretty picky about the color and brightness being uniform across the entire screen. Overall brightness doesn't matter as much to me. Others are probably the opposite. In particular, for text-based applications, uniformity doesn't really matter much.

The built-in DVI connector is it's saving grace though. I haven't gotten satisfactory output from any D-Sub (VGA) connector to my 24" LCD (everything is slightly blurry), and I didn't find any other laptops in this size/weight range with DVI other than the Macbook Pro. When it's hooked up to my 24" LCD, this laptop is awesome, faster than the desktop it replaced (2.8 GHz P4, ATI 9800 Pro).

Just out of curiosity what brand name is the memory that comes with the A8Js? Also on Newegg I found three different types of DD2 667 RAM. PC 5200, 5300, & 5400. Does it matter about which one of those I get?

    um

5300 and 5400 are the exact same thing

now 5200 ive never seen but i would avoid it until you understand what it is.

All the brands on newegg of ddr2 667 ram should work. I used 5400 ocz ram but people have used all the other kinds as well.

The brand of ram that came in my a8js is sold under the brand name jet ram.

I believe they use many different brands at this point because ive heard of at least 4 or 5.

A common odm brand ram is called hynix.

From what i can see, it's currently this

4S034P with both a CMO and an AUO screen (CMO owned by xclusiveplayer, Fearme apparently got an AUO)
4S024C CMO, however recoiledsnake said he had emailed gentech and they say all the current shipment of A8JS-4S024C that they have are AUO LCDs.
    4S024P CMO
    4S019C AUO
    4S014P AUO
    4S023P AUO

Kinda sucks no one owns a 4S041C, since that's the only version currently available here along with the 4S009P :p. But i suspect that it's mostly prior to 024 that it's AUO screens.
