Just wondering how many of you broke down and bought a MBP before the update. I tried to wait and broke down and bought one last week. Good luck to those that are waiting for the next tuesday.
I picked up a 2.4ghz, 160gb, 256mb video card MBP for $2025 off ebay, 4gigs of ram for $114, VMware Fusion for $50 = $2189 How did I do? This is my first mac purchase and I love this laptop. Now I know what all you mac users were talking about.
-
I think you could have got the memory for a tad cheaper, but overall I dont think thats a bad price what you paid for everything. Congrats on the purchase
-
I think we need to have a lesson of the differences betwenn the Santa Rosa and the Penryn updates. There is almost no difference noticeable in performance. The only difference is maybe battery life. Its not a revolutionar update. But congrats.
-
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
As diggy said, you probably could have saved a little in ram, but other than that it looks like a pretty good deal.
-
I waited a while and said enough is enough...its a laptop, I dont care about a 4% speed increase.
-
I think you got a great deal there. You can count me in with those who didn't wait although my return period on my MBP is not up for another ten days so.... we'll see if an announcement comes in the next days I'll have to reevaluate.
I paid what you paid but for the lower end MBP. But I did get applecare and .mac included in my price. So all in all, not bad but not as good as yours. -
If you have a Santa Rosa based model, it should be able to accept the Penryn.
I'm not sure how the new macs work because my MBP is the Core Duo model.
I also have a Dell Vostro 1400 which is Santa Rosa based and is fully compatible with a Penryn chip if I decide to get one in the future. -
im still waiting!
for couple more weeks.. since i dun really need it (exam period )
then.. screw it... its Xnote P300 probably.. 8600 in 13inch FTW <_< -
A lot of people keep giving in but i'm resisting the temptation and am waiting for the update!
But if that doesn't come soon enough...it's either the current MBP or something totally different . -
yeah ram was kinda expensive. i got mines for $96 - $30 rebate -$55 (sold old ram)= $12
-
yea I found the memory at newegg.com and it was the only one with 100% positive reviews so I just went with that one.
kudos to those of you that are still waiting...and if something amazing comes out then I'll have to think about it...ya never know what that tricky apple company is up to
applecare is next on my to do list but I tapped out my finances with what I got.
How do you like the .mac? I've played with it with the 60 day trial but I don't see much use for it. -
I said to heck with the update and also bought one this week, works great so far, I couldnt wait any longer

I think the reason for the delay was that Apple was hoping to skip the Penryn Santa Rosa refresh and jump right to Montevina with 1066MHz FSB Penryns and probably with the long awaited case redesign. But Intel has been having some problems with Penryn with availability difficulties for both the desktop and server parts, which I believe have been solved, but Montevina's release is now set for June where before it was hoped to be closer to the beginning of Q2. Now Apple seems to be in a difficult position where they can Penryn refresh on Santa Rosa and be late to market and be too close to Montevina or it can stall until Montevina finally arrives. Plus they might be awaiting GPU refreshes which aren't supposed to arrive until Montevina is here. -
The web photo gallery is really elegant. I've already got so many compliments on it and people ask me how I did it. The funny thing is that it literally took me minutes to do as .mac is so tightly integrated with OSX and iLife.
The iDisk feature of .mac is nice too. It's like having a virtual hard drive accessible anywhere you go. Whenever I need to pass a file to someone I just upload it to iDisk instead of emailing.
I haven't used Backup on it yet but after reading about it, it sounds promising.
I also change ISPs almost yearly so I am trying to move away from ISP email addresses and I don't care much for Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo. So I'm liking the @mac.com email address that came with .mac. It works well as webmail as well as through mail programs on your desktop.
There's obviously a lot more to it than that but I found it to be good value for $79/year. -
i did. i'm ordering my MBP tomorrow.
-
lol why not wait for this Tues then at least
would really suck if they did a update on Tue now wouldnt it
i seriously doubt they are doing anything big other than the CPU and pad so.. probably just gonna update the site. -
Decided to buy one too. Didn't wanna wait any longer. My first mac and loving it
Besides I think apple will wait for montevina before a upgrade. MBP is a great notebook as it is... -
well I bought the current MBP to see if I liked the mac and I love it and this way if we get a total refresh on it at the end of the year I'll be willing to try it. The next update isn't going to be that big of a deal so I'm happy with my first mac purchase!!!
-
It appears that Apple is shipping an undisclosed updated product to its Stores this week. We'll know what it is Tuesday. Don't give up yet!
-
^ lol where you heard that from
-
macrumors are running yet another rumour about this Tuesday being the day for the MBP update. They seem certain of it too. I think they've predicted it for every Tuesday so far this year; they're bound to get it right eventually.
We'll see in less than two days. -
-
But I am expecting a MBP update soon. -
-
lolz i bought mine
-
It better be announced this Tuesday as I have to make a decision about whether to keep mine or return it by Friday.
For me the update will have to blow away this model and be priced the same to be considered. Penryn is a no-brainer, but will the base be the T8100 or T9300? The other rumoured stuff (updated GPU- 256mb 9500m as a base, larger HD as standard, multi-touch pad, new case) are reaching although they would be great if they turn out to be true. -
yea yea
i have till Wed to decide, if not then its the LG P300 for me =/ -
You also miss out on OSX. -
lol yea.. but its the only 13inch with 8600GT (i will be buying the chinese version - therefore 8600GT)
well i havent use OSX 'yet' so not much to leave behind right now ;D -
i bought mine at the very end of last month after sending back my dell they are very generous with the student discount and its a fantastic machine. the rumours have turned into a joke first mac world then every week since with the same "hold off a liitle longer" message so two weeks after macworld i thought why am i still listening and purchased it.
pesonally i didn't think penryn warranted the wait at the end of the day as the processor showed minimal improvements in tests and if i was going to wait for anything it would be the new montevinna platform. with the multi touch i would have liked to use the three finger swipe but if it cant be implemented in the current mbp that would mean the trackpad would have to be redesigned so i was wondering whether they'll just redesign the whole thing and include it in the summer refresh when montevina, new gpu, blu ray? are implemented and allow it to be an exclusive feature of the mba a little longer. -
cheer cake: I think you should go play around with a mac with leopard on it at an apple store or best buy. I've only been using it for a week and I love it. Everything works very well and very easily. Even the one mouse button thing isn't a big deal with the two finger right click option or the CTRL key. check it out before you decide to go back to the dark side.
I agree with everyone else here that it would have to be a ridiculously awesome update to even have a second thought of my purchase. The mac has been well worth the money. -
I never understood why people complain about the right click thing. It's way better like it is on the Macs. I don't use my right click very often on my PC, and right clicking is so easy on the Macs. You just tap two fingers. You don't even need to put two fingers on the trackpad and click. Just tap two fingers on the pad!
And - agreed ChaseD316. The MBP update will have to be awesome. My MBP has been fantastic, especially since the 10.5.2 update fixed my screen turning off every few minutes of being idle. -
Looks like tomorrow will the the Tuesday. Appleinsider, and then engadget picked up the story, is now reporting three new apple model numbers surfacing (MB402LL/A, MB403LL/A, and MB404LL/A) at apple store and Bestbuy inventory management systems.
The pricing is also set at $1999, $2499 and $2799 for the three. -

Yep, new MacBook part numbers are in Best Buy's database
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/25/yep-new-macbook-part-numbers-are-in-best-buys-database/#comments -
There seems to be conflicting info. If it is indeed a MB rather than a MBP, it sure is expensive at $1999 with a larger box than the current ones.
-
We'll know tomorrow then? lol. Or it could just be another rumour that won't happen... AGAIN.
-
With everything that's happened today as far as new leaked models numbers and prices from BestBuy it would be just too funny if no MB/MBP update is announced tomorrow.
-
^ wasnt it updated saying they really made just a typo? so i guess no update..?
-
if there IS an update tomorrow apple will see alot of returns lol
-
Its 12:33 am an still no update to the store! When do they usually update it?
-
If it's an LED refresh in the 17 inch model, think they'll give me that when I go to repair my screen tomorrow?
-
trueintentions Notebook Evangelist
If I'm correct, they do it according to PST (Pacific Standard Time)...? It's only 9:57PM here, on Monday the 25th, so I believe we have to wait at least until tomorrow morning?
Macworld was at 9:00PST, so at least I'm pretty sure they do it according to PST time... -
-
and wake up in a nightmare or sweet dreams? ._.

apple store is down!!!
