I know I know, it happened to me.
My Macbook Pro (early 2008) gave me a 1st degree burn on my lap.
LOL....
-
1st? What were you doing? Something really strenuous for a Mac?
Like... Having it run Solitaire in Parallels? -
I know I should say something witty, but...
This shows why macbook pros should have fans.
Came up with something!
Are you sure it was the laptop, and not your hand that gave the burn? -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
notice that they advertise it as a notebook and not a laptop.

-
Are you serious, chongfa?
-
Had you burnt your lap with a hot cup of McDonalds coffee....... -
that's not good rep for a future buyer like me...LOL
-
-
I like Mac, but I won't drink the cool aid. It is a good notebook, but it shouldn't get that hot. -
-
Forget the damage its doing to you legs but what about the other parts of your body :O careful you dont fry your own eggs is putting it gently .
-
Have fun with your lap cancer!! XD
Yeah When I play Halflife 2 it get it get's hot and the fans get going, but when it's just running on the 9400m it's silent and at room temp. -
-
Another example of Apple skimping on design and durability.
-
-
-
LOL this is funny. when i was in the apple store they said that they have to call them Notebooks because they don't recommend using them on your lap. oh joy, what are laptops... uh i mean notebooks really for?
-
The aluminum really doesn't help keep things cool to the touch...
-
-
OP gets a 1st degree burn and he finds it funny...he's mental!!!
-
Or doesn't have any nerve endings in the legs...I didn't think WOW was *that*good of a game

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
you can use a macbook pro on your lap!
you just can't have the gpu and processor running (playing a game) and expect it to stay super cool.
browsing the web, music, etc. is all acceptable "laptop" use. -
Apples have always been known to run hot especially when running a software disk. Consider some type of cooling pad?
-
Just to be clear, are we talking about the late 2008 models here? I'm concerned because I'm a prospective buyer and the thing I hate most is overheating. I was told that the new model would be on par with their Windows counterparts - maybe not as cool as ThinkPads, but...
-
-
-
I wonder if we could get some specific temperatures? I've looked a a few macs in stores, but I don't think iStat was reporting accurate figures
-
If it makes you feel better, ALL my laptops (see my sig) gets quite hot at the bottom part, so much so that it made me very uncomfortable using it on my lap. Haven't got burn yet...
Even my Asus EEE 1000H gets super hot at the bottom....
The solution? I use Belkin Laptop Cooling Pad. Read the review here: http://www.everythingusb.com/belkin_laptop_cooling_pad_13845.html

Before you are calling people name, just ask and you shall receive.
i was gone for most of the weekend, but here is the picture of my left lap.
It is just a first degree burn, not too bad, but it is just funny that all these times, I thought that people was just exaggerating. Keep in mind it was not that bad and this picture is taken two days later.Attached Files:

Here is what mine is currently running at, it's running a little warm because I have a 24 inch monitor connect.
-
What happen you were using it on your lap and it started feeling hot so you were like "hmmm its getting a little warm, but whateva" 5-10mins later..."Its starting to burn but whateva" another 5-10mins later..."*sniff sniff* is someone cooking something? OMG! 1st degree burns on my lap!?!!"
-or-
Or was it more like "I'm at my desk working and I think I'll just use my laptop on my lap...OMG! that thing is hot = 1st degree burns" ??? -
I think what people seem to not understand, is that there is a difference between overheating, and the laptop just getting hot.
If the laptop overheats, it would normally shut down/restart inorder to save its parts.
If it doesn't turn off, it's just getting hot. The MBPs are metal, metal conducts heat, thats one of the design features, and if the laptop gets hot that makes sense.
I havn't seen too many people actually having overheating problems, with the new MBPs, its usually people upset that its running a little hot.
As for cooling pads, I've heard in the past that the ones with fans and so forth don't work that well with the MBPs. It seems that ones that are made out of metal, seem to help conduct the heat from the laptop onto the cooling pad. Their are a few out there that did this in the past.
And lastly, if you want to keep it in your lap and still game or something, just put a notebook under the laptop. I used to play bioshock, quake 4, and doom 3 all in class, and I'd have it on my lap with just a notebook to keep cool. -
-
To all of the fanboys, I like Mac, however I just simply pointed out what happen and call it for what it is. It surprised me because I thought that people was just talking craps. Until it happened to me. I won't do it again and I probably will buy another Mac, but it won't be the new alubook or new macbook pro.
-
Well don't buy old notebooks either, my old 4 year old dell got extremely hot, enough to burn me. I just didn't put it directly on my lap.
-
When I am in office, I put it on a desk, not my lap. When I actually sit at my home on the couch, I DO use the cooling fan for stability.
Even when I am siting on a desk at my home, I use that because it tilted the laptop slightly, better for typing.
But seriously guy, many laptops that I know of get hot after a while. At this moment I have 6 laptops and the oldest one is only 4 eyars old. THe rest are quite new and ALL of em gets hot after a while. It maybe not TOO hot, but your lap is slowly getting cooked anyhow. I NEVER use a laptop on my lap for more than 30 minutes, it just too uncomfortable.
Why don't get one of those travelling (collapsible) lapdesk? -
so what's the final verdict? What kind of temps does the MBP get? while gaming? while websurfing? and it is really a "lap"top?
-
-
There's a reason why these companies call them Notebooks now instead of Laptops. They even warn you not to use them on your laps. -
Why do people game while resting the notebook on their lap? Seriously. If you are playing TF2 or something like it, I assume you would be wanting to use a mouse, on a table, sitting in a comfortable chair.
-
My current notebook (an Asus) gets hot enough to burn me (hard drive goes to 60C+). Since I bought a cooler for it (Zalman NC-1000) I have had no problems with the heat generated.
-
Yikes though, put some ointment on that burn or something.
