Maybe thats why its incompatible. Oh well something else he mentioned was the fact that there was no ETA on the availability of the cards so its just a waiting game.

I signed up to say thanks to all of you. Helped me finalize my purchase with Dell. Thanks everyone.

I also chose the 5850. I can't wait! It should be here in ten to twelve days.

Still waiting here. I've been bugging the rep who's been helping me out at least once a day with an email and so far no stock yet. So who knows I may not get it first at this rate :p.

@new2ark thats close to the build i want to get. hopefully they don't delay it or anything and you could get us some concrete proof. im really happy that all good dell reps on here are confirming it to be GDDR5, but it never hurts to be thorough.

my current laptop seems to be on its ast legs so i may have to order sooner rather than later. right now i am just waiting for the next round of EPP discount codes.

    keep us posted.

Its going to be interesting to see how this card overclocks. It looks like from the ATI website that the only real difference between the 5850 and the 5870 is the clock speeds. Going to be exciting

Just curious, I asked this question before but I think it was removed when the multiple 5850 threads were merged.

How do you go about buying these video cards? Are they available outside of buying a new laptop? and at what cost? I remember seeing the 6800m for the Inspiron 9300 selling for well over 400$ at once point which really isn't worth it.

From what I hear you might be able to buy them directly from Dell. You just have to call them. There is also a guy here on the forums that is selling the mobility 5870, his name is babyhemi. There are also some sites like rjtech that sell mobile graphics cards. Not sure which card in particular your looking for.

Once you get your system, head over to the M15x Benchmark thread. Download all the programs you'll need if you don't have em. HW Monitor, CPUZ, GPUZ, and whatever tools you plan on using if your going to over clock.

Just run standard 3dMark06 and Vantage. Then we'll have something to compare with the GTX 260M and 5870. Post Screenshots for proof and include the windows for the different monitoring programs.

Were interested in Temperature/Clock Speeds/3dMark Scores.

At stock clocks, it should get close to 8k in Vantage, with a GPU score of ~7.1k and a CPU score of ~11k.

    Heya people.

Just created an account because i am very interested in buying the M15x.
And it was a good choice to read here as i found out now that the ati 5850 seems to be better then the gtx260m.

1 thing tho, yesterday i was looking at the standard price of 949 or something like that and now its standard 1149.
Does anyone know why they suddenly put it at 200euro's more?

    Regards,

    Jim

    --------- edit ---------

I was looking at the dell website

btw i just checked the us price and that is at 1199$ ( 945 euro )
I checked the Dutch, German and Spanish website and they all feature the same price ( 1149 ).
2 days ago it was 949.
I am very sure of this...

Well, i will send an email to Dell to find out what happend!
Maybe trouble for nothing but i like to know for what i spend 200 euro extra.

So, just an update. The Technicians that sent out the 5850 somehow managed to send the GTX 260 to me instead. On the phone now they're trying again..

The tech i'm speaking with however is very adamant about it being a downgrade rather than an upgrade. (he says from personal experience playing with the card).

So once again another rep throwing us a curve ball. :(

Yeah according to him he doesn't see any performance benefits and actually tried to talk me out of the exchange. (he processed it anyway) but it of course now raises the question as to why he would make that claim if it was unfounded.

Once again we wait and we see. Hopefully that other member gets his M15x today and can at least give us some hints as to its potential.

And its been confirmed all over this board by DELL_Bill/Chris but the US/Canada reps seem to still think its DDR3.

Either way I'm only concerned with real world application and true confirmation from a member that its DDR5. If it is what it should be then we should see an increase in performance near to that of an overclocked GTX 260M if not better. Not a decrease in performance.

My GTX 260M with Stock voltage hit 13210 3dMarks Others have hit 13300+ if it doesn't beat those numbers without overclock then its not really worth the upgrade rather than for DX11 support.

    Fingers Crossed.

Well if those comparisons are accurate, it looks like even the GDDR3 version of the 5850 is still an upgrade over the 260M (according to Vantage). But who knows in the "real world" tests.

There are two GTX260 versions on that chart. One from some Acer and one from the M15x, the M15x scored higher. And My system scored a 6k in GPU for Vantage. So. its still weaker if not on par with the GTX 260M which isn't really worth the hastle of an upgrade.

@hitokiri1 well those benches your comparing since the M15x gtx 260 scores higher than other systems with the 5850. wouldn't you be able to believe it would score higher with the 5850 as it has shown vs asus and the like i've always believe that dell gives more power to the system to not bottleneck anything for power(except some cases for throttling) some im still hopeful for a 13k stock score at least or my personal high score in 06(13329).
