I'm still waiting on the temps on all three sensors during furmark to see what the GDDR5 hits without the active cooling; no dice

I was looking over the gpu tool. How do you make the temps display? I checked it " enabled " but I don't get a reading.

    So far with Mod:

I put the heatsink for the ram ( cut the middle part where the gtx 260m run through) and let passive cooling from laptop cooler)

Temps in the low 47c and highs 55-57c idle.

I can take snapshot when I get home.

OT: give me instructions to be able to view temps from GPU Tool. Thanks

Rengsey you have to download the HD5870 version available here that will allow you to look at the sensors after enabling and starting them.

I think TSS 2 is the core, primarily because it is consistently identical to the GPU core temp reported by HWMonitor, and that TSS 1 is the memory. But, I stand to be corrected if someone has found any definitive description.

Edit: I think the bigger heat sink used in the Clevos has its benefits.

I haven't had any real-world issues with temps.

My system gets warm underneath, but the keyboard/area above the GPU doesn't get warm at all. Another thing to keep in mind is that the fans in the M15x are pretty quiet which tells me that Dell could use some higher-rpm fans (but there isn't really any issues and Dell has already decided to go with the 5850 instead of the 5870 anyway).

I used MX-3, but I am sure any good TIM would work well.

Awesome glad those took care of some temp drops. 3-5 degrees down is a huge improvement :D. Noticed your temps with 250/300 idling around 51-52 in windows. I usually pull 55 at 200/300 idle so I might need to double check my pad work might have stacked to much in places :).

You actually just want to make contact. The thermal pads don't work as well as the actual heat sink.

thanks mandrake, but the card is uneven so i filled those gaps with the pad so everything makes contact to the heatsink.

Rengsey just did reboot getting home and checked my temps at 200/300 after booting and idle for 30 minutes, max across the board was 49c. Seems once you run anything to knock temps up they never get back this low, I usually get 54-55c idle after gaming and other things always.

Hit up Furmark with that and see what those temps hit on the memory and such.

Also you said your running a laptop cooler as well? No lappy cooler here just the laptop on my desk.

You can get really high Furmark "scores" if you take off the heatsink entirely. It's a great game, but they need to patch the no heatsink glitch. It makes the gameplay to easy.

With the TSS 2 temp so much lower one would assume the core is TSS 2 since he has the heatsink directly on it only with no active cooling on the GDDR5. Still looking at getting some alternate heatsinks for the memory. Temps are pretty good on the TSS 0 and TSS 1 considering it's not being actively cooled.

Can't take SS of the highest score though, the damn game shuts down the system if your score become too high, probably because your score is higher than the creator's so he's not happy about it.

TSS 2 is the memIO temp, memIO is not the GDDR5 temp, it's only the controller, there's no sensor for the GDDR5. I made the same mistake of thinking that memIO is the GDDR5 temp, last time when I was changing the thermal paste on the GPU, I removed some thermal pads, when I checked the temp, the memIO temp is fine so I thought it's ok, but 2 days later it got cooked and I had to RMA it.

Well, so far, we know that:
DispIO = TSS 0 = Core temp, actually, the only useful one.
Thermal Diode/MemIO (they are identical, probably sensors are very close to each other) = TSS 1 = Memory Controller temp, not the GDDR5, the temp usually not that important, 90C+ is fine.
Shader = TSS 2 = Shader temp, never gets very high so it's fine.

Furmark shows the TSS 1 temp and not the core temp, the creator probably thought that thermal diode is the core temp, which I used to think as well.

Core: TSS 2 (Clock Tool) = Core Temp (HWMonitor) = GPU Therm. Diode (HWInfo32)

Memory: TSS 1 (Clock Tool) = GPU MemIO (HWInfo32)

TSS 0 (Clock Tool) = GPU DispIO (HWInfo32)

If you open all three utilities and track the respective temps, you will see that they remain consistent regardless of what you're doing. Also agree that Furmark appears to be reading memory temps (TSS 1), not core temps.

Makes the most sense, didn't check HWInfo32 for the diode names and readings. Also makes Rengseys temps make much more sense with his TSS 2 for the GPU pulling those lower temps being isolated on the heatsink.

Hey I think people with i7-620, 720, and 5870 will result in a better gpu score in 3dmark vantange than people with the i7-820qm or 920xm. Me and Inap, here got ~7400 on gpu score in 3dmark vantage at stock clock and he got the 920xm and I got the 820qm but other people with 620 or 720 got around ~7800. When I overclocked mine to 900/1100 I got 8974 but sleey0 got 9874. I don't know is this relate too power comsumption different between the cpu or not but I think people with i7-720 or 620 will result in a better gpu score in 3dmark vantage.

yeah its been awhile bro. welcome to the 5870 club, lol.well the markness recommended some pads from frozen cpu and they worked great. brought down my temps a few more degrees over the stock pads.. as for paste any of the top one will perform about the same, but right now i'm using mx-3.

    EK Thermal Pad Sheet - 160mm x 155mm x 1mm - FrozenCPU.com

also on the web page it says out of stock, but just call them and they will cut you new ones the same day.

performance gains are huge, this is the best upgrade for gaming as of now. almost doubled my fps playing bf2 in dx9 but in dx11 fps drops but still better then 260 fps.

Hey Inap have you overclocked your card? I don't know you noticed but people with the i720 or 620 score higher than us in 3dmark vantage gpu score. Also I noticed whenever I overclocked I have to use throttestop or my performance would decrease. This only happen for GTA IV.
