Just wondering if anyone's sitting around considering it.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Lot of speculation/wishful thinking early on, but most believe that Dell will never modify the BIOS to accept the 6970M. preferring to reserve that card for the M17x-R3.
-
You're probably right. Should only have to wait another week till the cards are revealed.
-
They still need to refresh the line, correct?
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
The consensus is that the R3 is the M15x refresh and that the M15x is EOL. No official word however.
-
Well, nobody tried it so far... right? Actually I'm really tempted to give it a try, even if the chances for success are low.
I'll let you know in case I order one. -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
Just remember they did release a bios a while back to a09 correct? Wonder what hardware id's were added to this.....hmmmm....
StevenX -
i think they should at least support the HD6950 its core is only 100 mhz slower
than the hd6970m according to notebookcheck -
i think the only chance of getting to work is with a modded bios. thewiz a member of the forum is working on a few bios for r2 and r3 and is looking at the M15x. he is mostly working on oc bios tools, but i've asked him to look into adding support for new card, and maybe upping the total wattage the M15x can handle. not sure if it would be possible but there is a chance now.
-
what about the guy that got the gtx480m working on the m15x
-
i think you mean fynight, we got nothing more then him saying he got it to work. other then that there was no proof of it working. i tried to contact him when i was doing the 470 mod, but got nothing.
-
Yeah, he never posted the stuff. I tried contacting him too but he never answerd... too bad.
Unfortunately Inap is absolutely right... there's no proof at all -
Yeah his real name is Craig Roberts and he's from Wales here in the UK. Don't worry I'm not spying or anything just a quick google search based on his user name and the fact that he is from England and it showed up on his xfire account But man do we need some newer GPUs. Someone at the marketplace is selling his 6870 from his R3 but that GPU is the same as a 5850 essentially.
-
Looks like the m17x BIOS has been cracked, which is very good news! The same dude said the m15x BIOS looks similar. I'd donate a decent chunk to him if he can add 6970 support.
-
Could anybody keep us updated with the bios cracking? I would also want to be able to upgrade my GPU some day.
-
First, parts of the m15x BIOS have been accessed as well as the m17x-r3 BIOS. The m17x will have support for the 6970, so that should make things a little easier.
Second, the 6970 ES cards have been shown to work in a Clevo 6970, which has no BIOS support and was made to handle 50-75w cards.
Still can't say that it's certain we'll get it working, but it's more good news than bad. -
Oh now im interested . Im running a 5850, you guys think it would be a good upgrade to 6970 ?
-
The 6970 is already available by the way. Dell definitely has it already, don£t know whether they're also selling them atm but I think they would if you get the right people at the phone.
Also Eurocom and other sites have it already. -
-
Thanks for the links, I'll take a look at them.
Well, Dell had the M17x R3 available on their website with the 6970m before the "Sandy bridge fiasco" so I assume they have it already on stock and ready. -
Its been confirmed that Eurocom was selling Engineering samples in the Clevo forums, and AMD is now pursuing action against them...
-
-
Hey svl7 you could see if you could get your hands on one as well as ES ram and HDD if they exists and you'll have a non-retail notebook ha!
-
If you read the thread, basically a couple of guys got 6970s that Eurocom and their reseller claimed to not be ES, saw on the forums that other resellers had contacted AMD and were told that no one had an exclusive deal for early release.
They then dismantled their "not ES" machines and the picture is worth 1000 words... ENG on the chip.
Reported it to AMD and apparently AMD says they will pursue the issue. -
Thanks!! Fascinating story... another dark chapter in the history of eurocom...
-
i wonder if someone is willing to send his m15x to mxm upgrade and ask them to try the hd6970m
-
Well, I'm thinking about ordering the card... I could still return it. But the card is pretty expensive and some guy on another site apparently tried it with the M17x r2, without success... not very motivating.
I'll see, may I'm gonna order it anyways because I simply want to try it myself -
i have a question i'm not an expert so go easy on me is it possible to get the hd6970m bios support from the m17x r3 and make a moded bios for the m15x with hd6970m support
-
Possible if you have considerable computer skills. Very risky as you may very well end up with a nice looking door stop. Some people are working on modded bios in the M17x forums and gpu support is apparently down the line.
-
@Fatal1ty39: Well, that's the idea more or less but the practical work is quite a bit harder... unfortunately. But hope dies last...
-
All I can say is if you want something like this to succeed, support and respect the guys trying to do it. It may possible, but it's a lot of work. I'm hoping with ya.
-
he never posted proof, so don't hold your breath
-
i prolly be getting my lappy at the end of the month. i'll be more then happy to get together with someone local to see if the 6970 is possible or not in an M15x.
-
Of course there's no additional GPU support yet, but he's already invested quite a lot time in his work with the Alienware BIOS... you'll see. It's amazing imo. -
i think j was talking about fynight. thewiz is the real deal, just hopes he got time to work out the gpu support.
-
-
i really don't think it will work, but that has never stopped me before, heheh
i'm in the bay area, so anyone wanting to try and is near by just shoot me a pm. -
Ah... bay area... I wanna go back to SF But I'd definitely miss the mountains and the snow.
Well, if nobody is gonna try it in the near future I'll end up ordering one, just to give it a try I like tinkering a bit with the system. -
On the clevo boards I can't remember where but I think I remember seeing that switching the 6970m and the 460m was pretty straight forward... Not sure about AW but if the power supply can handle it it shouldn't be an issue I'd think...
-
-
i think dell will never release a bios with the support of the hd6970 for m15x they
are against putting the the hd5870 in the m15x i think the hd6950m is the only way to go. -
-
mxm upgrade will be trying the hd6970m in the m15x as well for the m17x r2
MXM notebooks 3.0 and up -
nice find fatal1ty39, but from reading it, it doesn't seem like there are going to test the M15x.
-
how do we let them know that we want to try it ? should someone send them a m15x
-
I contacted them about the 6970m & M15x. I'll let you know when I get an answer.
-
maybe we can all get together and email them:
[email protected] -
sent them an email now we will have to wait and see how it goes btw do you think that they will have porblem with heatsinks of the m15x they had to mod the w870cu heatsinks to make it work Clevo W870CU
-
i guess the aw will be easier, the clevo heatsinks are more complicated then the aw. i tired to mod and clevo heatsink to a dell one a failed big time, heheh
-
has anybody got any replies on mail form mxm-upgrade about 6950/6970 on M15x ?
Or any other news on this regard?
*M15X + 6970* Anyone thinking of trying when they come out?
