untill the bios fixes it, all the M15x will have throttling issue (with 260m GTX).

well not a LOT but yes i am.. if u look 2 or 3 pages back i have posted that i contacted the dell about this and i will be sending my system for them to carry out tests (as they have not got one... bhaa!!) and meanwhile they will send me a replacement with he same spec and all... they promised me they will bring out a new BIOS update asap to solve this issue...
But for now everything seems to work nice with the lil software here and the small trick with rivatuner.

That im not sure of but just by using common sense im sure after some time you could risk it. But if the fans are doing their job they will help in keeping the heat down, but like i said its probably possible over a period of time.

andreaprio: Intel CPUs are designed not to overheat. They will run slower and cool off automatically if they ever reach 100C. No worries.

I remember joker testing throttling by adjusting the brightness of the screen. Does the 240 have the same power requirements at full load as the 260m?

    http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/3/3/1794507/RealTempBeta.zip

RealTemp works well too and you can set it to monitor and log what your CPU is up to while gaming. It should put a very light load on your computer while doing this and will show you the MHz of the hardest working core / thread while gaming. I don't know of any other tools that can accurately show that on the Core i7 CPUs.

It would be totally personal preference. I want lower resolution-1080p on a laptop screen is nuts to me, but I know tons of people want it. If you don't like 1280p on a 17" screen though I doubt you'd like 1080p on a 15.6" one.

    Hi everyone,

Well, I starting reading this thread yesterday evening, and finished this evening....pretty long in just around 1 month of posting, haha.

Anyway, I got my m15x built in November, but didn't get to touch it until mid December since I was abroad then.
I'm abroad now, in China, to be specific, and before I go on, could someone be so helpful as to send me throttlestop via email?....the throttlestop site joker posted is banned here in China, and I can't download it. I would really appreciate that.

As well, I want to thank joker and unclewebb for their priceless help with finding how to get around Dell's scheme.

I did the tests, and I also get both my cpu and gpu to throttle during heavy loads....unfortunate really...but much has already been said by our fellow m15x owners.

    My setup is as follows:
    820QM
    4 gigs ram
    1920x1080 native
    256 SSD drive
    GTX 260M
    Windows 7 ultimate
    9 cell battery

I found this setup is a much better bang for your buck over getting the 920XM processor....I'll just wait until that processor is ridiculously cheap and get it off ebay or buy it somewhere after I've driven the 820 almost to dirt, haha.

I did some reasearch about being able to change out your 260M for the 280M that comes in the M17, and apparently it's possible, but currently very hard to find the stand alone chip for sale.

So I'm leaving those 2 upgrades for the future....maybe 1.5 years later.

I have been playing a lot of COD Modern warfare, and I put everything on YES, at 60htz, and everything in EXTRA running at 1920x1080

I put on gpu-z and logged. I get solid runs with the clock at stock speed, and the gpu load fluctuating between 95% >< 97%
But no gpu nor cpu clock fluctuation whatsoever. so I'm guessing COD doesn't really push our systems that hard.

    ThrottleStop 1.71
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/337mxu

How about sendspace? Is that site banned too?

I just did one minor adjustment to this version for better support of the 0.5 multipliers that the newer Core 2 CPUs have.

Send me an email to real_temp ATyahoo.ca and I will send you the latest version if the above download doesn't work.
Replace AT with @ and it should work.

this is what it says when i try to install "windows requires a digitally signed driver"
"a recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. this version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature. the driver is unavailable and the program that uses this driver might not work correctly.

uninstall the program or device that uses this driver and check the publishers support website to get a digitally signed driver.

You shouldn't be seeing that error at all. Did you get 2.24c? Try changing your user account control settings and set it to off (never notify).

That's the exact same error I was getting with RivaTuner. Never did get it to work on my machine. UAC is turned off. Did all the turn off driver signing stuff I could find on the net. Nothing. Finally gave up. Don't really need it anyway with my 240M. But still would like to know why the error.

Well a quick google search found this suggestion:

Give it a try. Also make sure you select "yes" when it asks you if you want to install available updates for rivatuner. I just downloaded 2.24c for my desktop running win7 and it installed without a hitch.

Right click on the installer, run as administrator and install it. When rivatuner asks if you want to install updates, choose yes.

if you're stuck at 383, make sure stealth mode is off. I had a similar issue. At first I needed to restart the comp, to let rivatuner do its job. Since I didn't restart I was stuck at the wrong clocks. I checked stealth mode and everything and it wasn't on, nor did it make a difference in clocks if I toggled it on/off. After that I restarted, but then I forgot to check stealth mode. So I was still stuck at the wrong clocks. I even uninstalled rivatuner, and still was stuck. At that point I realized I was back in stealth mode, and it all made sense. You have to restart if enabling or disabling rivatuner and stealth mode is sneaky!

ahhhh ok i got it to work finally, but my question is once u use rivatuner there is no way so that your pc will do what it does without rivatuner, mine wasn't throttling on crysis max settings and max resolution, didn't run super fast but no throttling on gpu z, and it fluctuated according to what i was doing, i.e. checking gpu z and leaving crysis in the backround drops the core clock to 200 but back to 550 for crysis.

so my question is how do i get my comp back to normal how do i make it so it's like i never installed rivatuner without doing a system restore. i really wanna compare my performance with and without it, i don't think mine throttles tbh but idk.
