Why not drop to 4GB RAM, anything else would be a waste currently. If you ever need to upgrade you RAM this can be done easily aftermarket, and would work out cheaper too.
I assume you mean the GTX 460M, 1.5G DDR5? (sorry you didn't specify the model). I can't say for sure through practical experience, but will see if I can dig out some benchmark comparisons for you.
The thing with Alienware is you will shell out a little more, but what you pay for is the rig, its looks are unique to say the least. This laptop is easily disassembled and upgraded, and has a great cooling system especially if you pick up the 9-cell battery as it props up the back a little (maybe something to consider with the money you save from the drop in RAM and GPU upgrade).
I'll get back to you on the 460m vs 5850m if I dig anything out...

Yes, that was the model i was refering to. Heres a link to the laptop specs. ASUS upgrades G53 and G73 gaming laptops with 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX 460 grunt -- Engadget
The look of the alienware laptops have always apealed to me so i dont mind spending a little more. I am on a bit of a budget though so is cooling a problem with the 6 cell battery, or is it fine the 9 cell is just simply above average? -
No, no problem with the 6-cell and cooling. Just saying that the 9-cell will prop up the back of the system due to its design, this provides better dissipation of heat as the vents are lifted further off the table for example.
EDIT: I will have a look for the GPU comparisons after I finish work btw.... Only 2 more hrs!!! -
Here's a quick benchmark comparison I found between the two cards - Not sure how reliable the data is, but you will be able to find other comparisons with a quick google I suppose.

Hmmm, looking at that to the best of my understanding it seems that though the 5850 has a faster memory speed, the 460m beats it on most settings. Not that suprising given the fact the cards supposed to have 50% more umph. Though i may be interpreting the data incorrectly, not hugely familiar with comparisons. Thanks for finding that. You have been a big help.
I think unless i find anything else out in the next few hours i shall be ordering the following:
