@THX - others have done that as well with good results. I just think it's crap that you have to disable one of the best parts of any game "shadows" to get it to work. Shadows are what really make a game look 'real' or more 'real' to me. I look for them in corny things like graphic novels, or comics or even art. I just think shadows are the 'anti' essence that help give objects definition. (just my opinion)
Something I have been doing (yes even on my m15x) is to type
/snd_restart
at the beginning of every match. It helps me a lot. The weird thing is that when i disabled sound completely it did NOT help random slow downs or lag.
Good luck, Steven X
and Remember if their is a certain map you want or game mode we can set it up on the server and get it going! We just need to arrange a time!

Wow.. another tip. Run BOPS in low priority while leaving steam itself in normal priority. This worked best of all for me out of everything.
Thanks, StevenX -

I was approaching it from the oft MP perspective of turning everything down or as low as possible to get 60FPS+ so as not to get fragged by lag.
And considering that in BCBF2 I had to turn "everything" to low to get 60fps on the M11x and only have to disable shadows to get the same on Black Ops, I find that impressive (to be fair, Black Ops does use an older game engine)
It's just been my experience since getting back into PC gaming a couple years ago after taking a break, is that shadows are the culprit of any and every game slow down.
Even on my desktop, an I7 920 OC'd to 4.0ghz and two Nvidia GTX 275's SLI'd on an EVGA X58 Mobo with 6gb of 1333, @1920x1080, depending on the game and engine, shadows can still make that rig crawl.
And if they're not hampering FPS they're often flickering or glitching in a way that kills any of the art or immersion
intended by the creators.
Or the performance gain is too great to justify keeping it for the look.
In my limited experience, the technology still hasn't caught up with the code when it comes to shadows. Although to be fair, as I already said, it can also depend on the game engine.
I'm really leaning on upgrading my two GTX 275's in my desktop to the new 580. I'm trusting that if I do, I'll be able to run shadows in game as intended. -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
We shouldn't have to in a million years have to buy a desktop 580 in order to run a game properly, I can understand making a game where it will run smooth as butter with absolute max settings with the highest available hardware at time of release, but making it so that other hardware that should be able to run it with no problem on maybe a bit lower settings can't do that is ridiculous. A set of sli 275's would have absolutely murdered the MW2 or any of the other games in the series, heck SLi 275's would do pretty dang good in Metro2033 which should be 4x's harder to run than this. All it comes down to is Activision and Treyarch have seriously dropped the ball and are not moving fast enough to fix it.
-
Metro 2033 runs pretty fantastic at Ultra High settings on my desktop rig too.
Crysis was the one game that really gave it issues with Shaders (again an optimization problem rather than a Hardware problem)
I should've clarified that better
I don't really need to upgrade to a 580 at all. My desktop can run just about everything at ultra high settings.
But I want my desktop rig to be DX11 ready and I can at times get the PC upgrade sickness. I'm still on the fence about it. I might get an SSD instead for either one of my notebooks instead. Or I might save up and put it towards a M17x when they have a refresh. I really haven't decided. -

I am updating first page but here is what I do to run the game smooth every match.
1. Settings (high), No AA or AF (dont need them in MP).
2. Shadows enabled.
3. OC gpu
4. Check config file to makes sure multi-threaded is enabled.
5. Update the config file to BIND key F5 to "snd_restart"
6. keep steam normal priority.
7. Change black ops to low priority.
8. Hit F5 at the beginning of each new game to reset sound.
Works like a champ. Very little lag issues at all. My operating system sound is set to 16 bit, 44khz. So I also made sure that the config file matched.

Deevu - do a find on the word "bind". you will see a list. Put it where F5 would be logically. THe important thing is to make sure it goes after the UNBIND ALL statement.
I appreciate that it works. I can't take any credit for this because I am just regurging what others have done in other forums, support forums, in game chats, etc...
As always my thanks goes out to the other members that put in effort, validate what works, take the time to post, and add value. And of course notebook review forums!
Best Wishes, StevenX -
I've tried all these fixes, and nothing seems to work :/ I have a R1 and FPS in MP is usually around 20-45, dipping down to 15 in firefights.

I saw a Black Ops performance guide on Techspot. Obviously they're lying when they say the engine is well-optimized and gives better frame rates than World at War. CoD fanboys in the editorial staff. :|
But anyway, try looking it up and there were a few things I tried that I think gave me a slight bump in FPS. Or maybe I just wanna believe that. -

very weird... mine is running extremely good now. i can play both SP and MP at a reasonably high gfx settings while keeping the fps at a playable rate. say like 30fps min
-
-
They didnt fix anything yet. It's still unplayable on my quadcore 3.0ghz with 46GTX desktop. But its ok with the m11x on low settings.
-
Granted, im using no AA,, and no v sync, BUT it runs smooth as heck even in chaos. -
-
I still have major lag and have done everything, is there something Im missing?
I get the same Frame rates wtih every quality what more can I do? -
Is the stuttering fixed yet?
I have tried close to everything possible, spending my whole weekend trying to reduce the lag in COD: BO without any success. I'm using a M11xR1 by the way. -
Can somebody help me with the "snd_restart". everytime i play the game and press F5 it doesnt restart the sound.
-
gecko, you sure you got (bind f5 "snd_restart") without () in your config_mp file ?
-
added bind f5 "snd_restart" to the config file and still crappy frame rate. Could it be that i need more than 2 gb ram? I have a m11x r1 with a core 2 duo
Alex -
Everytime i put it in the config_mp file and i start the game and i press F5 it doesnt work. I check the config_mp file after that and see that the bind F5 "snd_restart" is gone... any help or can anybody upload their config_mp file? -
Gecko when you turn your game on you probably get the message about computer settings being changed and asking you whether cod should optimize your settings. Dont click yes, always click no, otherwise, your config is being reseted.

I'm still getting crappy framerate and have done everything, what more can I do?
Is there any word on when they're releasing a new patch to fix the gpu hitching? -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
Scyth - some of the kids that follow jd_2020 tweets said that they are "working" on it. It also states they do not want to communicate a date for the next patch at this point. That's all I know. StevenX

@stevenxowens
I added you, but can't seem to find the Alienware army server.
i will try to find it one way or another.
Thanks. -

The Alienware Army server is cool. I'm all the way in the Philippines and my ping is 290 in the AA server, but the people are fine, so I don't mind. HC FTW (1 shot kill with the M14)
The closest servers from my place are in Japan, anyway, where I get 240 ping. Not much of a difference. D: -

Update from treyarch
Call of Duty: Black Ops -
Any M11x r1 users want to give an update if its playable now with the update ??
-
what update?
-
first_leviathan Notebook Consultant
He wants us to give him an update about the November 19 update, the second of many updates for Black Ops.
Uh it's playable on the R2 on high settings without AA. Treyarch is working on a patch that'll give improvements to dual core computers though. -
On the R1 its playable but theres still stuttering
-
I've been wanting to play single player but not had much luck on the r1... just waiting it out. Praying a patch will save this game.
-
Multiplayer is what I really care about, and the stuttering still enough of an issue to make it unplayable for me currently. At least I have my desktop, but I really hope Treyarch gets this fixed soon.
-
Ftr, the update hasn't been released by Steam yet. To my knowledge Treyarch has issued it one or two days ago?
-
I'm on an m11x r2 i7, I've done a bunch of tweaking to the config so I start out with 70-100 fps but then around 15-20 mins later my game just drops to the sub 20 fps range and stays there no matter what i do, unless i restart. anyone else with the same problems?
-
I have a question about hdmi out to a 22" monitor. I've been running the native 1366x768 on my 22 inch dell and it seems to be random when it stretches it full screen or reverts back to the black letter box. The native res of the monitor is 1680 x 1050 but my fps dips between 35-60fps which is horrible for a FPS. When I run it in the native res (even stretched out to full screen) I'm getting anywhere between 55-95fps.
running an i7 m11x with 8gigs of ram and 256ssd if that matters. OC'd to 160mhz and boosting it with TS.
Just wondering if anyone knows a way to force it to display the 1366 to full screen. Same thing happens with MW2. Sometimes it uses all of the screen real estate and then randomly goes back to letter boxing which sucks.
Thanks. -
Hey guys, i just installed 265.90 driver that i got from laptopvideo2go and installed it on my m11x R1. do you guys think i will get an fps increase in COD:BO?
-
Hi guys. I just wanted to report that I DID see some improvement by dropping steam priority to low, and also by checking my audio format on the realtek settings, and adjusting the sound on my .cfg file accordingly.
My CFG file was listed as 44Khz, but when I checked on the realtek settings, it was actually set to 48Khz.
Just ctrl+f hz khz on the config file, and configure it accordingly (set it to 48Khz).
I just want to point out that the sound might be whats ruining gameplay; Everything kind of points to it being the culprit in lag.
I'm running 2mb cache processor m11x-r1 with the latest nvidia drivers.
Game settings on normal graphics, native res., FOV almost on max, shadows off, and all sound sliders on minimum; I run kind of ok, but still see considerable slowdown.
Thanks for all the tip guys! Here's to hoping for that patch. -
first_leviathan Notebook Consultant
I monitored the game using EVGA Precision and tried out different settings. I found that to maximize the GPU usage, there had to be a sweet spot for the settings.
I found the sweet spot for the R2 to be native res, no v-sync, 4x AA, trilinear filtering, maximum anisotropic filtering, and extra textures.
I lowered the AA to 2x and the GPU usage went down for the exact same level (The Defector). I upped it to 8x and the game began to dip below 30fps during bigger fights.
I didn't mod the config in any way.
Cheers, hope this helps. -
