If anybody wants to buy a 120Hz panel + cable, I have them for sale. Practically new, guaranteed to work (since it worked on mine).

    PM me.

Hello everyone. I just got the cable, LCD (DO2) screen, and emitter for screen upgrade. Upon testing the system wont boot (8 beeps). I already tried to clear the CMOS battery but no luck. Anyone experience this issue? I have no idea on which is causing the fault it either LCD or cable.

I need you inputs and thoughts please...

you don't need the emitter to do the screen upgrade: you only need it if you want to game with 3D vision.

most of us here don't really care for 3D vision and just settle for the 120hz.

did you plug the cable into the correct port? the EDP port? it won't work if you plug it into the LVDS port. the LVDS port is at the top while the EDP port is at the bottom.

EDIT: is this for the AW17 R1 or the M17X R4? the display cables for those models are not the same.

Which AW 17 do you have?

i think you may have plugged the cable into the wrong port on the motherboard?

i did that and got 8 beeps, and killed the motherboard, there's a picture on this thread showing the correct port

Hello, I have a problem with my recent upgrade from 60Hz to 120Hz. My AW17 R5 have GTX880M with i7 4700MQ and every time windows boots the resolution is 1024x768, I change it to 1080p and works perfect but in next time to boot up return to 1024x768. I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits. What's the problem? Change to Windows 8/10???

Thanks in advance for yours comments

    PD: Sorry for my English

    It's aftermarket but when I have 60Hz screen I don't have issues.

    Thanks

Yes I plug the connector on EDP port. I just got the cable I bought to you and still no luck. Maybe it is not compatible or dead LCD.

Can you connect the 60hz back? If it works then the LCD is busted, if nothing happens then your motherboard is gone.

Hi somebody remembers a user sharing a Toshiba Qosmio 3D color profile? It was with the same screen panel I have, the LTN173HT02-D02 and happen to really like how the colors looked.

It wasn't that super blue tint but more warm in a way.

Now in the middle of a new Windows install and I can't find it anywhere within my files.

I'm aware that a color calibration should be done in each screen. But maybe somebody did a calibration in one of the 120Hz screens?

If so i'll appreciate if somebody could share it :)

I found the file I was asking. Was post by user: " widezu69" and attached right here.

I highly recommended it to people without a colorimeter tool, to apply to the 120Hz screen in our Aw17-R1s.

Has anyone tried this with an AMD card yet? I'd really like to get 120hz for general usability. Any theories on whether or not my M290X will recognize and utilize the 120hz display?

Theory: The card will work fine once the windows driver loads but there lies the unknown. The 120hz panel is 'native'. Meaning it can only sync up with a 120hz signal. When the machine goes through it's POST tests at startup the Intel GPU can only sync with a 60hz panel so the machine just beeps IF the intel is visible to the BIOS.

Using the second MB port will bypass the Intel GPU but it then relies on the Dgpu to support 120hz before any driver is loaded. AFAIK only NV cards have this microcode but there is no reason to think this might not have been added at some time by AMD?

I'd love to see someone give it a go but it's certainly a dice roll ...

i think it will default to 60hz until drivers are installed. i was supposed to get a M290X from ramsay to test if their card was still functional.

I'll give it a shot. I don't see why AMD wouldn't have the code to do it. You can reach 120hz through an active displayport adapter (so I've read) so I wouldn't see why not. I'm not fully informed here, there are 2 motherboard ports for displays?

Last I looked, there were a few different sources for displays and cables. It looks like that has changed. Where is my most reputable (yet affordable) place for the display and cable? I'll probably also get the emitter just in case. Backup plan, I'd just buy an 880M and sell my m290x.

Secondary question, do I lose GPU switching with this? Any other negative impacts? I recall something about worse battery life.

Side note: I regret installing my Msata in the slot on the motherboard. That thing makes for a hot left hand. I purchased an Msata 2.5" adapter to move it.

    Quick question for thegh0sts-
Ordered all of my supplies today. (I ordered the cable from Amazon for those that might be having trouble locating one)

Do I need to uninstall any drivers if I am just sticking with my stock 780m? I was reading your steps and wasn't sure if that was only if you are upgrading a video card as well.

Edit- Also, I am upgrading to Windows 10 (currently 7) is that going to mess with anything?
    Thanks for your help!

Yeah, you need to go back in this thread about the cable and connector on the MB to use (basically the one next to the one in use ATM).

You do loose the Igpu so no battery gaming and much shorter battery life.

I wouldn't bother with the emitter, it's never going to work with an AMD card and will only work with the OEM NV 3D card for your model.

As for the 880m - bad idea, they were flaky as hell and never got fixed before NV moved on so risky.

I have no idea about suppliers so can't help there, good luck, hope it works :).

it's partly alienware and partly intel that's to blame cos intel only make their igpus 60hz and alienware for not pointing it out.

for the nth time: no! because it is tied to your original hardware configuration. installing a 9XXM GPU is considered an incompatible configuration and 3D won't work.

To be clear....Yes! You can upgrade to any 9xxM GPU if performance is all you want but you will lose 3D ability.

    that's what I said JHC! you can't keep 3D because it's an unauthorized/unlicensed configuration.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 900m series didn't support 3D at all did they? It isn't listed as a supported option on their webpage. The last supported mobile card was the 780m.

The n392w cable has two variants does anyone know which fits into the Alienware 17 R1.
Im thinking the one with the power connector to the IR emitter is the right one but the other one has two connectors which might plug into the camera.

i don't believe that there is 2 variants of the n392w: only the n392w and the fnh0h.

So this is the connector to buy . All call this one A)

This connector is the one that has a connector one the IR emitter. This one is called B)

I just thought what would power the device without the power connection? I have the fnh0h mailed from dell put the plug is too big to fit the ir emitter. Which should I buy A or B.

Either one will work because they both have the camera connector. One just doesn't have the ir emitter connector which you don't need unless you want the 3D function. But if it's the same cost and shipping time get cable A

the fnh0h DOES NOT have a connector for the IR emitter and plus it is meant to be connected via the LVDS port while the 120hz is meant to be connected via the EDP port.

try plugging an external monitor and try reinstalling the old panel and see if the error occurs.

Seems like it may be an issue with my power adapter, if I plug it in when the computer is turned on, my screen goes black. If its plugged in during start up, the computer sends me a blue screen with the error 0x00000f. I'll see how it does with an external monitor with the adapter plugged in tomorrow.

Hope that works for you but it sounds like the card has a problem. When it's on battery the card is in a low power state and works. As soon as the card is running at full speed it fails?

    Just an idea...
