Is it the same p/n screen or different batch?? seems like they are a hit and miss with dead/stuck pixels. Did you happen to grab the p/n off the screen and can you post it please?

It was a lot easier than I thought. I had to do it on windows 8.1 as I don't know if there is a way do it on windows 7 yet.

You must reinstalled windows 8.1 in full eufi mode with legacy, fast, and secure boot disabled. If you already have a video driver installed you must uninstalled that first as well. Then turn computer off and swap card. You should be able to boot into windows now and disable driver signature enforcement. After reboot you can now install a modded video driver. I'm currently running 345.09 driver full unlocked using svl7's unlock vbios. 100% stable with no throttling and full unlocked for overclock..

Actually the card was purchased from a fellow member here already flashed with unlocked vbios. But to do so in windows 8 you must flash it within windows and not through DOS since nvflash is not compatible through DOS yet that I know of.

There is an NVFlash win version. I had to use it for this 680m.

Oh I might of mistaken then I didn't know nvflash work for windows 8 yet. That would make things a lot easier and safer.

MOg you've flashed the svl7 bios on our 780m 120hz? Anyone wanna give us a good tutorial on it? For some reason my 780m has been throttling down to 324mhz during games on occasions. Wondering if the bios might help that out. Running r4 120mhz 780m

I see that you have i7-4710QM but will my overclocked i7-4930mx start to throttled with gtx970/980m as several talks about the Alienware 18 and overclocked processor's ?

Guide for flashing can be found here

    vBIOS can be found here

Before you can download the vBIOS you need to have 5 quality posts on the tech inferno forums or you can set up a monthly sub to get immediate access.

The Flashing is fairly easy and quick if you are competent with computers at all. The only issue you might have is if your running UEFI then it won't let you boot from the USB for the dox nVflash. I got around this by setting the bios back to legacy , flashing the card, then turning UEFI back on but it may not work for everyone the same.

I over clocked my using Nvidia inspector but my 780m is lazy it likes to hang around 771mhz instead of in turbo boost 948 mhz. Does svl7 disables this were it's in turbo full time, I get drop in fps during gameplay and I think locking it at it's full potential would help this. My temps are good never going above 80, usually in the 65 to 72 range.

I don't know for certain but I could see it being throttle from your highly overclock xtreme processor couple that with your highly overclock 980m due to PSU constraint. I think it would be really close. But you'll be fine keeping it close to stock unless you have drivers issues.

    Hi!

This is Murad from Bangladesh. I have got my first alienware 3 days back which I dreamed from long long ago. I got my one from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331442575936?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

It is Dell Alienware 17 R1 which contains NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M with WLED HD+ (1600 x 900) Anti-Glare Display. Overall Performance is really great & will be boosted more with SSD. I'm not heavy gamer so no complain about the GPU performance.

My only complain is the display quality!! I'm very disappointed with the display quality compared to my 22 inch viewsonic monitor. Alienware looks like black & white beside the viewsonic monitor! I feel very bad when I look at my viewsonic display :(

I have no other way to resend it to USA from my country which will have extra shipping cost, taxes, blah blah...

So, I have only option to upgrade my display as mentioned by OP. I really need helps from you guys specially from MogRules & lanC.

After reading the whole thread I have understood that I need to order right parts. At first, I would like place order for the cable from aliexpress. But someone mentioned he got another type of cable with same parts number!! So can please give me exact url of the product page of the cable?

I have found few cost effective solution but I'm confused which one to order!

All of those appear to be fine.

Even in the case of the other user who got a different cable he still bought what should have been an OEM original as all the pics looked identical to these but what he actually got was the different product if I remember correctly. IF that were to happen again I would open a dispute and demand your money back as there is no way of knowing what would happen if you used the wrong revision for the cable. Good to see these more readily available now that the R2 has launched.

The second link seems to show the most pictures and looks good. The main concern is the connector in the 2nd pic which was very different in that previous users case. The consensus as the time was the pins were most likely the same and it may have worked but I don't know if he ever tried. These all appear to be the correct revision though.

Seems I have got the right cable :) Thanks!

Now it is matter to order right Display panel! How to select the right one?? As lanC was facing several issues with the panel. I have updated with the latest bios 14. I will have only one luck because after receiving the panel I can't think about to return the item if that doesn't work!

Is there anyway to know the panel which should work for my device? My machine born on September 15, 2014. So, can I expect that the panel is available now will work with my one?

    I'm really tensed about that!

    NOTE:
I have got an .icc profile from notebookreview & that already improved my display quality by a great scale!!! I'm happier than before. Difference between my ViewSonic & Alienware is very close now but not same!

I was not thinking specifically on the power supply. It can be switched to AW 18 330W. I thought more about the problems others have with processor or gpu throttling when they overclock the processor along with gtx980m .. This is exactly what is the problem, for those who have this combination (gtx90m) in Alienware 18 (r2) ..

Hello to everyone, I am writing because I have followed in great detail the guide in the first post. I put everything I had some problems with the LCD turned on but the PC is started at the end.
The problem is that I do not know how to activate the nvidia 3d seen in the context menu does not appear the part of stereoscopic, if active "photo 3d" tells me that the panel is not supported.
The panel is a C01 which do you recommend? Also the card is properly installed ir.

It could be more of dell's 'protection' on the 3D technology, if the display is not on their list, Stereoscopic does not install? Most advice here is aimed at getting a 120hz solution working. 3D is just a bonus that may or may not work :(

Did you re-install the drivers for the GPU? Once you install the 3d emitter Windows won't auto install drivers for it. Remove all the drivers for your GPU and re-install and then Windows should pick up the emitter and hopefully enable the 3D. If that still does not work it is possible that the screen is not a compatible version.

thanks for the reply, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the nvidia driver, (I state that the irboard is properly recognized) so it is the same problem encountered by Ianc. Now as I fix this? LCD which I have to buy? the one on the bay I posted would be fine?

Just to confirm, the screen you bought already has the part number GN36T?

If yours is also not working and you have the C01 revision then it would appear that revision is just not going to work with our laptops at all. I will update the main thread to reflect that people should avoid that revision as we have two people now with that screen that have had problems with it.

Ihave a 980M GTX in my m17x-r4, is there a LVDS screen that is 120hz that works ? Like, is I go and replace the LCD inside the monitor itself... Or is there a way to use the EDP with 980M GTX on this laptop ? (Will it mess up, or not show anything, not handshake etc..)

I am not haha....I unlocked it back when people were complaining about the clock speed not displaying properly on these cards. I have run a mild OC a few times just to do some benchmarks but for general everyday use I just leave it alone as it performs just fine for me.

Here is my first 3dmark11 test together with my last bench test with my AW17 R1. Dell delivered a throttled TDP in bios for the graphics card when I bought my Alienware 17R1. Only difference in this benchmark test is that Dell replaced my former i7-4900mq to a i7-4930mx due to a rotten intel processor. The difference is more than 31% in 3dmark11 with a mod vbios. P7094 vs P9319

I've heard that upgrading to the GTX 970M without using Optimus results in some sort of throttling. Is this still an issue? If so, using the eDP (since it disables Optimus) would result in some potential issues, would it not?

Some people here seem to have both the 970M and this 120Hz panel running on their eDP, so I'm just wondering if any issues were encountered.

There should not be an issue with having a 970M installed running without the Optimus unless there's either some obstruction with the fans or just plain overheating (Which on a regular case should not happen).

Thanks, I've already ordered the GTX 970M, and I'm keeping an eye out for when the LG IPS panel currently offered with the new AW17 R2 becomes readily available, so I can pick that up. But that used eDP, so I just wanted to make sure the 970M and an eDP display panel weren't at odds with each other.

That being said, Dell is currently out of stock of the eDP cable.

I have a question, ok I knew I'd lost, with 3D capabilities, the function of the dual video card intel (but worth it), so I'm okay, but I'm noticing something, the fans go off and come back on, it is normal or should I be concerned? before the change in power saving mode to battery cooling was only passive
