Is it possible to have internal dual drives? e.g one 256ssd and one 500gb hdd?
Ive already bought a 500gb external harddrive so i dont clutter up my ssd ;P

May the fourth be with you! :D (Had to be done!)

I just ordered a 256 GB vertex 4 ... hoping the swap is easy.. not use to having to deal with all the extra alienware drivers.

I was going to put in a Momentus XT but reviews don't seem to be too good. I am hearing great things about the Samsung mSatas though. Hopefully when they go on sale I will pick one up to try out.

When your beast is arrive , just remember to backup with alienware respawn into your USB stick. Once backup is completed , try boot with USB to confirm the backup data are not corrupted , once checked , shutdown your beast and swap to SSD , then boot with via USB alienware respawn to install , everything will work fine like factory restored. Just remember to keep this USB for future restore. :D

Momentus XT is not that bad , is in between HDD/SSD, personally I prefer SSD , since it boot faster but you have to sacrifice storage , not much people can effort 512GB SSD.

Anybody have any experiences in the past launch of new alienwares?

I am living in Singapore, and the specs of the machines start quite high and so does the price, e.g. the base model m14x r2 comes with minimun 1TB HDD with 64GB mSATA.

any idea if they will introduce cheaper machines?

You can call dell SG rep for better pricing compare to website.

The price will never drop from the website , unless its from dell outlet, but that apply to US only.

As dell outlet , it will be refurbished but you have to wait for few months.

Btw good to see some Singaporean here.

I still only managed to get epp discount at 15% when i called in, trying to ask for more as prices are still abit steep after discount and they can't downgrade the HDD or anything else. :(

    where are you from?

But seriously, the only difference will be a few more points on the CPU score.. my machine has the 2GB 650m.

Canada , but i know how to speak singlish :D

Yea , same as Canada , there is 8GB Ram downgrade to 6GB Ram , 750GB HDD downgrade to 500GB HDD has not much in price difference , so I went for 8GB & 750GB.

Some unknown force trying to limited us to fool with those configs :O

I've never though much of a WEI score. I get 7.1 on my 555m, the 650 is supposed to be close to twice as powerful and it's showing the same score.

7970 Black Edition. And I know I'm not going to get close to what i have with that on a laptop, but just want to make sure spending 1600.00 was worth it.

Awesome thats what I wanted to see. Thanks.

Dude.. I don't think you know how good the m14x is .. My R1 ran BF3 on all Ultra settings insanely well and it ran the Diablo 3 beta also all on high settings.. It's a beast of a machine , and I'm sure the R2 will give even more performance.. So I wouldn't worry , it will be $1600 well spent.

Migrating from m11x r2 to m14x r2. Recently ran into a job that paid some good money so I went all out on this thing...

    Nebula Red
    i7 3820QM
    2gb Nvidia gt 650m
    240gb Kingston Hyper X 3k SSD
Optical drive HDD caddy with 750gb 7200rpm
IC Diamond thermal paste (hopefully cool down that ivy bridge processor)
    8gb Kingston Hyper X ram
    900p screen
    6250 wifi card

I'm constantly on the go so any money that I would pour into building a desktop goes into this, what I can hopefully call my 'mobile desktop'. Going to a m17x/m18x starts passing the 'mobile' threshold. Can't wait to receive to start posting some benches.

I'm no SSD/harddrive expert but i'm pretty sure you'll get much better performance if you go with a RAID setup. Also the price on a 512gb SSD is pretty crazy, I just bought a 120gb OCZ sata 3 SSD for $99 locally and it has a faster read/write performance then your SSD(525mb read/500mb write)
If I were you i'd get a 256gb SSD for now and see how that goes, if you need more storage in the future you could get another 256gb SSD or hopefully the price of the 512gb SSDs will have dropped significantly...

    First time poster.

Ordered mine with the following for $1007 shipped.

    Processor: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.3GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
    Memory: 6GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz
Display Panels: 14.0" High Def+ (900p/1600x900) with WLED backlight
    Video Card: 1 GB DDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M with Optimus™
Hard Drive: 750GB 7,200 RPM SATA + 32GB mSATA Caching SSD

Not supposed to ship until June 1st though =( This will be my 2nd attempt to replace my workhorse 13" MBP. My first attempt with an M14X R1 ended up being returned.

What's the common thought regarding the 750gb platter/32gb SSD combo? It sounds like the best of both worlds but I haven't been able to find much info on it.

I Ordered mine on 4/27/2012. The M14x r2 stealth black with-
    i7-3720QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.6GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
    16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz
    750GB 7,200 RPM SATA + 32GB mSATA Caching SSD
    2 GB DDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M with Optimus™
    4.0" High Def+ (900p/1600x900) with WLED backlight
and an extra Logitech G700 Wireless Gaming Mouse.
Still shows as "in production." But i can't wait for it to come. I'll be testing skyrim with a lot of improv graphics mods, battlefield 3, and company of heroes. Ah and mount and blade with 1000 troops on the battlefield. :D
