I used Shin Etsu before and it was by far the best non conductive thermal paste I ever used regarding longevity & viscosity. Recently I can't seem to find it a lot in Germany.

Trying to help a friend with ICD7, what is the best method to apply this to CPU die? I do not think the spreading method like gelid extreme works here, this thing is SUPER THICK.

If it is a lidless laptop CPU, apply a line the length of the die. If it is a desktop CPU you can apply a big X pattern from corner to corner.

You're welcome. On the GPU, you can do an X or two parallel lines evenly spaced apart across the width of the GPU core. Either method works fine.

Funny, the tech who came to do my heatsink replacement (2nd one) brought Shin Etsu with him. I just bought Gelid GC-Extreme and just went with that. GC-Extreme works really well and is less viscous than most pastes.

Dang, ICD7 removed core diff temps in the laptop. Not bad.

Just some background. Old paste was gc extreme. Heard about icd scratching the die but if it is cosmetic and my buddy does not need to repaste, why not. It solved core diff issues too so that was surprising.

IIRC, he used colorless nail polish. Better ask your sister or mother. I don't remember the brand. I think he used a generic one which was available.

Any colorless nail polish (transparent) works as long as it is CELLULOSE BASED. That's all you need to know. You don't need any name brand. Just make sure it's cellulouse based. The ones that are not, please avoid.

Well don't use too much LM which would cause it to slip out of the surface.
For starters try Kryonaut or Phobya and you'll straightaway see the difference and these aren't conductive.

I use Céramique 2 to protect against pump-out myself.

    That's the stuff.
It's not electrically conductive and also designed to withstand high temperatures.

Doesn't kryonaut function similarly? But in terms of cost, AS ceramique 2 is way cheaper than TGK.

True, and if you already have extra of that on hand that would work equally well, but since I'm only using a very light coat on any exposed metal bits directly near the die I decided to use something that was slightly cheaper and easier to spread.

Here is an example from a recent delid:

I read that some folk really don't like Arctic Cooling MX-4, but I've never had it fail on me. Sooo...

Would it be possible to see it tested too?
