Dell wants to gut my unit and replace the mobo. I go back to college in three weeks ;( tight schedule.

Since I have a first batch unit I asked about a replacement unit instead and requested they test the thermals and screen bleed on whatever gets sent back.

Probably dug in here somewhere, but is there a place other than dell to get new nvidia drivers? The nvidia drivers from nvidia will not install for me.

    Switch from standard to DCH.
After running DDU, if the gpu cannot be found use windows device manager to search for drivers. get the basic microsoft drivers to recognize the gpu then install the new nvidia drivers.
Also try uninstalling intel integrated graphics drivers first if it cannot find the nvidia gpu.

That awkward moment when a 2080 in a laptop is faster than a full blown 7nm Radeon VII in most of the games...

What I'm saying is, opt out of any and ALL thermal upgrades and do it yourself later on.

They install perfectly fine. You can install GeForce Experience and after getting latest drivers, just get rid of geforce experience.

My keyboard stop working -_-. It’s weird how I can reboot it and it works and then it stops after a few minutes. It works fine in bios. I just even reinstalled windows. Not even a month after getting this second laptop this happens. It’s better the gpu burning tho

You have Windows 10 crapping over your machine. Just stick to 1809 for now and don't try to jump on the "everything latest and greatest" bandwagon just yet. There are way too many bugs in the new build that will take a long time before they get ironed out. I have even heard reports that the trackpad gets disabled when you connect an external mouse even if you have set it to not get disabled automatically from settings.

You can download it from here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kz6wrTKtUFKW0exsSOSYt_eQkgDE07hS

Download all the necessary drivers from Dell support page, install this build, disable internet and install all drivers first. Once done, disable driver updates via "Windows Updates" and then run windows updates to upgrade the OS. Once done, run ShutUP 10 to finish things up.

    Try re-installing these drivers: https://www.dell.com/support/home/s...WT64A&productcode=alienware-17-area51m-laptop

Go to start menu, type "View event logs" and click on it. Then under Windows logs from the left pane, select "System". From there, check out what error messages do you see that seem to have happened around at the same time when you received that error.
P.S., Build 1903 is called Windows 10 "BSOD Version" in tech circles for a reason. You can avoid a lot of headache by simply downgrading to 1809 or lower for now.

This isn't necessarily a bloatware as it makes changes to the icon dll files and there is nothing running on top of the windows shell so no extra resources used. Gotta try it to love it. :D

Anyone followed this discussion on the Alienware subreddit where a customer is claiming that he was sold a used/defective Alienware 51m by HIDEvolution as brand new?
Also it is mentioned that Dell has told HIDEvolution is not a Dell Authorized dealer

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/...olution_is_fraud_dell_provided_evidence_need/

Not sure if this is relevant information in this thread or warrants its own separate discussion but this if true should be relevant info to anyone planning to order from HIDEvolution.

Old myth already debunked several times in this thread. HIDevolution is authorized by Dell, and probably XoticPC too by now. However, that old laptop sold as new will open a whole new can of worms for them. Somebody should get fired over this.

That person is just creating their own thrash. They should have purchased or borrowed an inexpensive replacement machine to continue work on their PhD if it is that important. HIDEvolution IS an authorized reseller. If they purchased through HID then they should just communicate with only HID instead of trying to deal with Dell directly and create confusion and frustration with the support process.

Also, just because they see a service request before they received their machine does not mean it was used. If HIDEvolution gets a machine from Dell - determines it fails QC for one reason or another - they are just going to order a replacement part for the machine rather requesting an entire replacement. Most parts can be shipped overnight from the repair depot if they are in stock.

I am not sure why you would be blaming the customer here for ordering the laptop he wants and how its not what you think he should buy. He does mention he needs the processing power for rendering/animation..

It is likely that HIDEvolution not being an authorized reseller statement is inaccurate and likely made by an unaware Dell rep but they should not be definitely reselling returned/defective repaired laptops as new.

Unaware? Dude, that's Umar Khan. Not some clueless support clown.

P.S., I also bought via HIDevolution. Yes, their thermal upgrades were a total waste but they refunded me the entire amount that I had paid them for upgrades when I reported bad work to their reps here, and I was successfully able to transfer the warranty of the laptop in my name within 2 days. It was a brand new machine. HIDevolution even provided me with the Dell order number that showed when my machine was shipped from Dell as I was waiting for a delayed lot. I find them really transparent and if there is a problem, then they will address it. That person should have talked to them first instead of taking it to reddit and take out his frustration.

Could you please read the whole thread and its predecessor before jumping to conclusions..

Where have I mentioned that its Umar Khan that has mentioned HIDEvolution is not an authorized reseller for Dell? That is mentioned as a followup by the OP in his latest post based on discussions with Dell. Nowhere has he confirmed that is Umar Khan specifically which is altogether a whole different incident from a few months back if I recall correctly.

    Here is the original post

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/cfrfr4/my_personal_thoughts_on_alienware_area_51m_want/

where you can see that he has already discussed this with HIDevolution and Dell who have both passed the buck around.

Anyhow, this whole discussion should definitely be about reselling refurbished laptops as new which is not a good practice for consumers who are buying a $3200 product and unaware it is not new. That is not a good behavior by a seller and borderlines on fraud.

    Missed this earlier.

It is possible that this could be the case. Anyhow will wait for HIDEvolution to respond on it.

It is unfortunate that he got a lemon. It is also unfortunate that parts were delayed, although like he said it is a new model in high demand so delays are usually common. It sounds like he got in touch with Dell corporate so hopefully they can either ship him a loaner machine from the outlet quickly, or offer to build him a new machine if they cannot give a solid ETA on the replacement parts.

Just finished reading the comments here - https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/...a_51m_want/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x.

The claim of being sold a used or defective unit seem to be false, and are most likely a misunderstanding on how things work with the Area 51m when sold through a reseller like HIDEvolution. The poster says Dell told him it has had 2 repairs and he had a used unit, but in the Reddit comments it seems that once HIDEvolution received the laptop, they replaced a defective panel and when Dell sent the wrong replacement, had to get a 2nd LCD panel. So, not a used unit, but a new unit that had repairs initiated by HIDEvolution.

If were to guess I say the problem is that there were too many cooks in the kitchen trying to resolve the problem. The Reddit poster might have been better to just start and stay with HID, instead of getting Dell involved. The left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing, and it went down from there. I expect @Donald@HIDevolution will help sort this guys problem out, so we'll stay tuned to see the outcome.

Note, this post is not meant to be pro or con ordering the Area 51m through a reseller, but rather just reporting what facts have been stated in this particular case.

When people aka new buyers (or those buyers buy it second hands) don’t see or know about the real problem we will see much more of this in the coming months. And the standard 1 year warranty will start expires early next year.

That whole reddit situation seems dumb.

Guy had the laptop for a long time no issues. He bought from HIDEvolution through Amazon. Why didn't he first contact HIDEvolution instead of trying to rely on Dell?

Also all his posts about HIDEvolution not being authorized is very interesting. I am wondering who he is talking to at dell.

Dell support team didn't even know who was Frank Azor when I talked to them (until he taught them the hard way). So thinking that they know jack is expecting a bit too much. Their tech guys are OK but customer support personnel are absolutely clueless. And, well, Reddit lived up to its reputation once again! :D

Thanks for linking this. Pretty sad situation for that dude and yet another proof that you should ALWAYS buy stuff directly from manufacturer so there would be no such miscommunication when it comes to warranty issues.

@Donald@HIDevolution I suggest you guys help that dude out on reddit as he doesn't seem to know what he is doing/saying. Plus, it'd be nice to own up to a mistake (or explain exactly what happened so that others know how things work).

DeeX already showed where the inlet mosfets are located. Where is the thunderbolt controller located?

I already read HID's explanation in original thread. If I were them, I would stop selling Alienware products to prevent situations like these from happening since it seems like Dell does not feel it is necessary to explain to their workers who is authorized to sell their products and repair them.
