Yeah same here, then one popped up at microcenter here in Michigan and I grabbed it quickly. Loving the system so far

I quote: ...it looks like customers are getting Alienware laptops with gimped RTX 3070 Laptop GPUs leading to reduced performance.
User u/REAVER117 posted an issue on the Alienware subreddit that the performance observed with his m15 R5 was not on expected lines for an RTX 3070. Upon checking GPU-Z and HWiNFO, it became apparent that the RTX 3070 in the Alienware m15 R5 was reporting just 4,608 CUDA cores, 36 RT cores, and 144 tensor cores while in reality it should be showing 5,120 CUDA cores, 40 RT cores, and 160 tensor cores. This does not seem to be an isolated issue as several other Alienware owners have reported similar such mismatches in the same thread. -
I don't think anyone needs to justify why they buy something. I'm not sure why but you are bringing up a lot of superfluous information about yourself in order to bolster your argument to justify your purchase. Whatever the reasons they are legitimate and valid. I respect anyone willing to put their money where their mouth is. Surely no body needs to denounce most of americans over a laptop thread. Turns out a laptop purchase is not the culmination of all your worldly deeds. It's just a purchase. I hope it works excellently for you. Sincerely.Last edited: Jun 5, 2021raz8020, pathfindercod, Reciever and 7 others like this. -

Hope we are wrong about your new x15, although we rarely are and the specs speak for themselves.Last edited: Jun 5, 2021 -
Has anyone seen any information directly from dell regarding the vapor chamber for the higher end models of the x17?
it’s mentioned here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Goodb...-newer-sleeker-kid-on-the-block.541589.0.html
But in a video directly from Alienware that came out today ( ) around the 4:36 mark she shows the heat sink off. It doesn’t seem to have a vapor chamber...
She also notes in the beginning of the video that it’s the highest spec version, with the 3080 and 11980hk. If there’s any version of the x17 that should have a vapor chamber, it’s the max spec version.

According to that link, most of those posters readily accept whatever dell tells them ( false advertisement ). Although they aren't likely to be interested in laptops.Last edited: Jun 5, 2021raz8020, Papusan, etern4l and 1 other person like this. -
Yeah, I expect more people will see it the way I do. Hot to touch and you mayneed magic eyes. Or good feelings in your arms/fingers. I hate struggle in blind.

Would be pretty bad if the live score is true. I will be getting the x17 to tweak it and see what it can do. Here is a spring weather run of my current one:

Either way it’s not what I wanted to see since thinness means less cooling potential.Last edited: Jun 6, 2021 -
Maybe next year you'll see right below 0.60" Thick for the refresh.
-
They better refresh the A51 or at least make a 200W 3080 that can fit an A51 R2. I wouldn’t mind seeing a larger single power adapter as well.Last edited: Jun 6, 2021raz8020, Clamibot, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

When I go home people ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do you do it man? What, you some kinda war junkie?" You know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.
Pic is of me before a clearing mission in Baghdad 07 during the surge. If you think people Like me are privileged then please go to the nearest Army recruiter and tell them you want to enlist into the 18X program. That is the straight off the street enlistment program for SF. Then please tell me how privileged you feel after a few months. After you completed Basic.

I am also quite curious about this as well. Really hoping it has one.. I am considering also getting this laptop to replace my current M17 R1, but I am aiming for the top spec model this time. Hopefully it would turn out good since DELL is pretty much among the few companies who actually honors their International Warranty in my country.
Thank you so much for your service sir. I may not be an American citizen, but I appreciate your sacrifices. -
Thanks for the amazing support on this thread. I appreciate it more then words can convey. So getting the train back on the track, building PC's and the occasional game helps to focus my energy. Especially now that I'm retired. When my X15 arrives I'll be sure to add 3dmark and push it as much as it will let me. I have spent very little time on this forum because I never considered laptops/notebooks as practical gaming devices so this will be a new experience for me. My primary forum which I've been a member for years has been overclock.com. I've had thousands of postings their on the Caselabs and Aquaero threads. For me, that is the real fun. Designing and building water cooled systems able to push boundaries. I know their has been a lot of negative comments about these new X series laptops but it's by far faster then any laptop I've ever purchased. And considering the money I've spent building desktops these X series laptops don't even come close. And just so were clear, I'm not rich. I just know how to handle my finances and San Antonio is 14% lower then the national average for cost of living. The mortgage form my 2900sf house is $920 a month. And I am tax exempt for income and property taxes because of my VA rating. I earned my BA while I was in the Army so Uncle Sam paid for me education free and clear. One last thing. Dell, Lenovo, and I think Asus gives military discounts for retirees if you buy from them direct. I know you won't get that if you buy it from places like Best Buy. The Discount usually offsets the tax. Another great things about buying direct is the coupons. Dell is good about that.

The point is: if you are after pure performance and expect good I/O options and basic upgradeability, you will likely be disappointed to some extent (and thus might want to reconsider); if you are aware of and happy with all the compromises then fine, but do take out a warranty spanning the expected timeframe of use as QA may vary.Last edited: Jun 7, 2021SlickDragon, Clamibot, Gumwars and 5 others like this. -
This is an excellent forum for figuring out the what's-what with portable PCs. The list of extremely well-informed members here is far too large to try and list. The big point that's been conveyed here is that AW has gone downhill, rather rapidly, in an attempt to stay relevant in the laptop segment. Thin and light along with powerful tend not to mix well, even as we're seeing the fruits of the sub 14nm manufacturing nodes hit the markets. In one of your earlier posts you said you wanted upgradeability paths and you felt the X15 provided that. Well, these are soldered socket (BGA) CPU/GPU systems, with the X15 even having the RAM glued to the MB. Storage and WiFi appear to be the only components that you can tinker with. Historically, AW laptops since Coffee Lake run HOT. Like pushing Intel thermal limit hot, by design. Couple that with inverted MBs, repasting their laptops have gone from somewhat complex (15/17 R1 thru R4/5) to super easy (M15/17 R1) on to exceedingly difficult (the most recent offerings). Undervolting is a must. Repasting is very likely and with this element 31 crap, which sounds great on paper but a deeper dive looks to be a nightmare in getting off the CPU/GPU die, is further proof that Dell is making disposable $3K laptops.
I was initially excited about this laptop but now not so much. My M17R1 is still getting it done, still has access to the AGA, and I fully believe other OEMs are more vested in creating enthusiast grade products over what Dell is doing here. To each their own, but I would advise going with something else or at least hold off a bit and see what these things look like in the wild rather than being a test bed for gen 1 Dell tech.
FWIW. -

I guess it's the replacement i was waiting for from Alienware to replace my aging 17R4 with the "/$%?&* tripod design... Waiting to see more and more review of it, but so far, it seems promising.

I'm thinking when they have m17 r4 in refurbished I might purchase one if they have it with 3080 and 10980hk at least it has vapor chamber and number pad. Sucks no tb4 but u get tb3 and aga. Side ports too lol. White color. I just need something I can game with on the go from Dell with at least a 3080 and that's light.

how the hell that quad fan thing even needs a patent in the first place? I hope they fail, miserably at that too.

Whohoo! I have my maxed out x17 on order!
I don’t even care that it’s thin, I just wanted a 3080 that wasn’t gimped.
I’m coming from a MSI G66 Stealth 3080 that is a heaping pile of garbage. I can’t wait for my unit to shipbsch3r, Flying Endeavor and JCordero31 like this. -

congrats, I'm trying to decide between x17 or MSI GE76 . . . -
-
there are many ways to gimp it, you coming from MSI, assuming their heatsink is decent, then it is power or current limited. with alienware, it will be heatsink and temperature gimped causing the throttle.
in both cases, the new CPU + GPU throttling mechanism will gimp it regardless, that is the issue with thin and light. -
