I wasn't trying to be smart ass or offend you. But yes I understand what your saying! I myself is planning on buying this laptop and thinking if I should wait for Kaby Lake or get it now. Because I dont know if I will be able to wait that long!

I see. Well, there should be information about Kaby Lake coming very soon.

EDIT: They usually launch at large technical conferences, like CES.

I hope they release it soon! But I mean 2899$ for an I7- 6820HK, GTX 1080 and 4K display with 16GB ram and 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD is not a bad price it is certainly cheaper than most 1080 Laptops out there!

I HOPE this will be fixed. If it's going to be g-sync only I'm done with waiting. Then I won't get it. Now it's late here in Europe. hope I will see some good stuff tomorrow

Now since we got the GTX 1080 I am debating if I should wait for Kaby lake? Now I am again debating if this or that! Why can't all the latest just be released on the same date.

Hey guys I have a question regarding the 4K display, is the display technology 4K IGZO panel or IPS IGZO or just IPS as I read somewhere in the forums that UHD panel is IGZO IPS it confused me.

so frank the main alieware twitter account finally got their stories straigh and because the 1080 is gsync enabled they will only sell it with the Qhd panel. which would be fine if it didnt have problems....

also he straight out told us the it would launch on the 21st with the 4k panel

Ordered. Pardon the language but damn good pricing. Before tax, 450 cheaper than an Aorus x7 and Asus g701vi with same specs. 250-300 cheaper than a Sager with similar/slightly lesser memory and storage specs. Wow. :D

Just put an order in for $2559 total :). To good of a deal to pass up. Does anyone know if the screen can be swapped later for 4K or is this a proprietary thing with the motherboard?

What do you mean by half? How much in hours as an average. The problem is I wanted the GTX 1080 with the 4k panel but I will have to get the QHD as the 4k seems like its not going to be available. How was your experience with the QHD screen overall?

Clearly they went lazy here. Only developing a single motherboard that has the GTX 1080, and they chose it to do it on a motherboard that has the g-sync module on it. Clearly there are more customers getting the FHD and the UHD monitors, so I don't know why they went with the G-sync panel.

I am thinking however if they made this choice thinking: "Well the Kaby lake is about to release, so perhaps we should stick with only one motherboard so far, so that the people who cannot wait for the gtx 1080 can get it, and we minimize the amount of motherboards we will have left over".

That does make a little sense, but on the other hand, I'm afraid it's stupid marketing crap that simply doesn't care.

Goddamn it. This really sucks, and I can't do anything about it.

6 hours without and 3 hours with g-sync because the dgpu works all the time.

As I spoke with Frank Alienware on Twitter, he said the reason they went with QHD panel on 1080 is because Nvidia wanted their 1080's be paired with GSync. Which in my opinion it is total BS and that the bandwidth for 4K is too high and 4K with GSync doesn't well together! It is total Bull*** I mean Razer is using 4K IGZO panel with Gsync?? I waited so long for this 1080 and they just dropped the f bomb on my future order! I guess I will wait for Kaby Lake now..

Lol too high bandwidth? so they are saying that the gtx 1070 and 1060 can handle more bandwidth?

QHD 120hz is 442,368,000 pixels per second
UHD 60hz is 497,664,000 pixels per second

Relatively the difference in bandwidth isn't exceptionally high. That, they even dare mocking us with such BS excuses, and cannot even dare to say the truth is just making it worse for us.

And really, do they expect me to believe that nvidia has added such a restriction on the GTX 1080? How come he suddenly knows of such a limit, while he was saying a few hours ago, that the 4K will be available as an option. Pff. the more I read/think the angrier I get, I need to cool down

Yes it is total BS! I remember when Alienware had good quality and everything, I am not saying it is bad now it is still the laptop I would buy soon but if you compare how it was before when M17X versions and how they included all kinds of cool stuff like hats and packaging with stickers and stuff right now it is becoming like HP, ACER and those mainstream brands. I never thought I would get frustrated this much!

    So would the 6820HK + 1080 be worth the extra $400 over the 6700HQ + 1070?

    I game at 1440p.

We haven't had any user / owner reports from the AW 17 1080, so no one knows how it performs :)

The other vendors with large frame laptops have a 20%-35% gain in performance from 1070 to 1080, but the thinner laptops like Aorus / Razer with a GTX 1080 show little improvement over the performance a 1070 laptop shows.

The 230w PSU is enough for the 1070 with a 45w CPU, but with the 91w CPU and high OC a 330w is useful.

The 1080 should benefit from a 330w PSU, but only MSI and Asus have released 1080 laptops with a 330w PSU, those show improvements in performance.

What PSU does the AW 17 GTX 1080 laptop come with, 230w or 330w?

I went on ahead and ordered one of these, with the GTX 1080. The order confirmation says it should be delivered between Nov 28th and Dec 02, so they must have been preparing for this release. The price was $2550 with tax (about $2400 before) which honestly isn't that bad for the specs compared to what else is available on the market. I will get more ram and an aftermarket SSD, along with a spare 330W AC Adapter for my desk.

I was able to try out the QHD and FHD screen in Best Buy. The FHD did look nicer than the QHD in terms of color (and the scanlines effect). However, I was able to use the QHD at 100% scaling comfortably, which makes this the first laptop display that can go beyond 1920x1080 for my work apps. Its going to be great to have an IDE pinned to the left side of the screen and a browser to the right, with both still being usable! It almost makes having an external QHD at my desk not necessary!

You can get the 6820HK, GTX 1080 with 120hz panel for as low as 2499$ which in my opinion is pretty cheap compared to other vendors.

Same here though I guess I am waiting for the Kaby***ing lake too!

Damn Alienware ruined all my plans and Christmas present for myself

Still no reviews of the AW17 with GTX 1080? And still no options to get a AW with GTX 1080 with optimus?

Personally, I don't really plan to game on anything as small as 17" unless I have to so G Sync on internal display isn't really worth anything, but Optimus for better battery times are worth a lot. I would imagine I am not the only one thinking like this.

I did a web chat with a sales rep. It was his best price (other than if I had a school / military / corporate discount) and is a pretty good deal. I will also have some reward cash back which I can hopefully use for a spare 330W power supply. Make sure to confirm the specs with the rep before placing the order. Even though I emailed my cart to him, he basically only got a base model and had to choose the configuration options for the quote.

I may end up not using my external monitor altogether because it looks like for the next couple of years I will be working from home in my apartment which does not enough space for a full external display on my desk.

Less CPU usage from the driver.

Also it doesn't have the bad reputation that Killer wireless driver have.

Also it's probably cheaper to have considering the 1435 -> 1535 on Dell is +25usd and I picked this 8260 for <10usd.
