First of all, sorry for bad English! I am looking for a replacement for my old G74SX, but I am in doubt between AW17R4 - G752VS - GT73VR.

Can anyone describe me the quality of the keyboard of the AW17R4, does it resemble that of the VOSTRO 3300?

Could someone here help me choose?

Which brand has the best build quality and the best cooling solution? Which brand has the best screen?

IPS 75 Hz or TN 120 Hz?

GTX 1070 for 1440p is too much? (I intend to keep this notebook for a period of 3 to 5 years)?

Thank you very much for your attention!

So, are there any reviews for the AW17 R4 with GTX 1080 yet?

3 to 5 years? Get the 1080p screen then ... the jump from 1080p to 1440p is surprisingly hard on the GPU ... I know cause I've been running 1440p on my desktop for several years now ...

The GTX1070 with a 1080p screen is the best bet if your looking at 3 to 5 years. For sure ..

Just don't buy the ASUS, it's below both Alienware and MSI.

Screen quality? The 1440p/120HZ screen measures as very mediocre, technically. The 1080p/120Hz of the MSI measures as an excellent screen, technically.

1440p is a good resolution for a 1070, I just wish it was a better screen. If I was buying an Alienware 17, I'd probably take the 75Hz IPS, then overclock the screen as high as it'll go.

My particular 1080p IPS panel on the AW17 is a 60hz panel by default. I'm not sure where the 75Hz static is coming from unless it's some 1080p panel other than the LG variant that's in my machine.

It does overclock to 100hz refresh rate quite nicely, however ... legitimately at that ... no frame skipping or other voodoo ...

    Excellent screen man ...

Oh I was just taking his word for it... lol. But yeah I'd do exactly what you have done. The 60Hz IPS in my current GT72 couldn't hit over 80Hz without getting fuzzy, too bad.

That 1440p screen just isn't ready for the spotlight. I understand that it's the first panel of its kind, but they're selling it on resolution and Hz alone, while under scrutiny it's borderline a piece of crap. None of the budget went towards what matters when you're staring at it: contrast, black levels, color gamut, etc...

Hopefully the second generation panel is up to snuff.

Yeah ... I gathered as much but thought I'd qualify for sake of the thread ...

"contrast, black levels, color gamut, etc..." ... that's what this LG 1080p IPS panel is so ridiculously good at ...

I write a lot ... many times at dark bars and restaraunts ... and I literally have to run the screen at like 30% brightness just to work comfortably (much less lighting up half of the bar) ... LOL ... such lovely brightness ...

Great colors, great contrast ... 1080p is the laptop resolution for me from here and for the future ... and this particular panel NaILS *everything* ...

    100hz refresh overclock? That's just icing, man ... ;-) ...

    G752VS 1080p 75Hz screen!

    the 1080p AW17R4 is GSync?

MSI GT73VR is better than the Asus?

And why the g752VS is bellow AW17R4 and G73VR?

What will be the best thread?
Anyone here can confirm if the 1080p screen of the AW17R4 is a GSync compatible?

He's basically saying that you come to an Alienware portion of the forum and ask what laptop manufacturer is better. 99% of the people might be biased towards Alienware. You probably need to go to a general section that's not branded by any manufacturer and ask your question.

I'm planning to get the AW 17r4 with the 120hz 2.5k display. Any suggestions for and against? And is the 15r3 a complete hot box.? That would be my second option.

I've seen a lot of people happy with the IPS screen. :D But doesn't the IPS panel have 20-30ms pixel refresh rate, instead of the 4-5ms rate on the QHD 120hz screen?

on the uk site they have 5 models, only the last one has the 6820hk available and that model comes with a mandatory 4k monitor and 1070, you cant change either to the 1080p/Qhd screen or to the gtx 1080

im really starting to think theyre out of mother board or cpus, since theyre forcing the gsync models so hard. lets hope the US launch for the gtx 1080 isnt as bad

Yes, the FHD panel has a 25ms and the 4k has a 27ms.

UK Website (Alienware.co.uk) and the Dell website that it launches you to, has a compatibility issue for the GTX 1080 in the new Alienware 17. There are only 3 processors available when youre customising the laptop purchase, and each one of them gives out a compatibility issue with the 1080 graphics card - making it impossible to order/purchase the laptop with the 1080 option. I called their sales rep - they have same issue on their systems too.

They were available sins previous week. However I see on the uk page that they added on the front page a highlight for the AW 17 with the GTX 1080 advertising it like that with an image.

However the list of laptops is not updated. What you see is what remains of the Gsync GTX 1080 laptops that were available for a few days previous week.
So I reckon a new option will emerge with default the GTX 1080.
I contacted the UK support, and they didn't know themselves, and told me they would keep me updated through mail wel it will be properly available

Hey Quicksort - yes, they were available last week, but when i tried to purchase, the orders immediately became cancelled. (It was possible to build the 1080 system last week without the compatibility issues). When i called sales support last week thursday after my order became cancelled, their system wasnt even showing the 1080 option and they said that was the reason why my order was cancelling - due to non-availability of 1080. This was confirmed on Alienware twitter - that the 1080 official launch is TODAY.

Hopefully this internal issue can be sorted out, and we are enabled the proper purchase of this wonderful and sexy machine.

I've ordered the QHD 1080 version the moment it became available (15 nov.), but it's still in pre-production..

Edit: Lol, this writing helped!! It just went into production! :D So there was at least one 1080 available ;)

did anybody speak to a sales rep named Dominick?
he was super rude xD and shouted at me when i asked about the 1080 saying "didnt i already tell you i would call you when its available" till i told him my name then he was like oh it wasnt you

he tried to sell me a desktop or the amp instead and when i said no, he pretty much kicked me off the line by reciting his line "have very good christmas bye" as fast as he could with an attitude.

dell is lucky i really want this laptop or that would of been enough reason not to give them buisness

And at $400 more here in the US... I would have probably canceled my current order if it was maybe $200-300 more.

Edit: So if you build the same config but with a 1070 GTX its only a $100 price difference basically. So that's not too bad of a price difference if you wanted the 32gb of RAM and the 512gb+1Tb hard drive options. But, I paid $1900 out the door with mine and this one would be around $2425 after taxes and discounts.

I just checked the US site and it shows the 6820HK is incompatible with the 4K display. But the pricing is not that bad if you opt the lowest option and add GTX 1080 and 4K plus 99wh battery will be around 2800$. Then you can get an SSD or M.2 and add more ram yourself for far more less price!

    2730$ not 2800$

Understandably, the 1080 configuration requires the 6820HK. However, I'd wait for the Kaby Lake replacement, considering the issues it presents (assuming you have a computer).

Just something to consider! Don't intend to start any debates. Remember, this thing is not upgradeable.

Yes if you pick 1080 the site automatically chooses the 6820HK but I agree with you I think it is better to wait for Kaby lake but then maybe it will be better to wait for GTX 2080 :)

No need to be a smart a**... I'm just giving advice. The Kaby Lake 7820HK (or whatever it's called) is going to be released by January. The "1180" will not be out until late 2017.

These systems cannot be upgraded. Waiting a month or two for a new CPU to avoid all of the heat issues... I'd say it's worth it.
