I still dont get it what causes this. I had 2 different R1 motherboards but both with the Geforce 970m gpu and I never had zero throttling issues. I wonder if it has purely something to do with the 980m or just with a driver that many seem to install.
Because it seems that some Intel architecture driver can cause power issues on these laptops. -
@Papusan this is the final email, lets see what happens with another refurb mobo.. below is what the tech team wrote to me
We shall have the motherboard sent to you again, but all the part will be reconditioned as per T&C. If you feel that if you are facing issue after MB replacement, I shall get this done.
If issue stands unresolved as per your expectations for high gaming/high software; you have to figure out a way for it on your own.
For us even now, system is absolutely working fine & we are doing this for your satisfaction
If you are okay for this; only then we shall proceed -

@Papusan sadly its a no, it runs with higher voltage, bit more stable than the previous mobo, old one had 1.075 VID max, and this mobo 1.150 VID, throttle happens after 10mins of gaming, goes to 800mhz for like 1 or 2min, then gets back to 2.6ghz, temps were absolutely fine, now i have no hope left for 4720hq, and ive recorded another gameplay of madmax, ill upload that too, any ideas how to sue dell.. im just waiting for fellow alienware 15 R2 owners vidoes with cpu speed..

I think it's fair to say the AW15 R2 is a bit of a beast, I'm pretty sure I could push it a good bit further but since I overtook the "Oculus Rift recommended spec", I'm happy!Last edited: Feb 29, 2016 -

If you need to overclock your hardware setup in order for it to provide the same score as another laptop with default clock speed... Then is something wrong. -

Every replacement board from Dellienware can give you low end Asic score on gpu + crippled Intel BGA. Or one of them. Or both can be useable... Nice with everything soldered on the motherboard Many reasons why hardcore overclockers hate BGA. -

Sky x9 run stock speed of GPU and CPU in the benchmark with lowest Firestrike score. There is no difference in hardware between these two processors if i7-6820 is overclocked as well at 6700K speed(4 cores at 4GHZ).
It would be catastrophic if Nvidia had continued with clock blocking, when the default performance is not what it should be. Happy benchingLast edited: Mar 1, 2016 -

Without going over what I guess has been covered extensively elsewhere, Dell is primarily a sales machine and they bought Alienware to penetrate a sector they felt they didn't have enough presence in. You know this but Dell does not give a rats nutsack about the enthusiast (you) that shaped and built up the credibility of Alienware. They care about sales, that is not about to change.
I also knew this prior to buying my machine. I did not expect this machine to be an Alienware machine of old. I did not expect to be swapping out my CPU or GPU and I'm fine with that. In fact I didn't buy this machine because it was an Alienware but because when comparing other similarly specced machines vs price, it came out on top. Had a good deal been found elsewhere then it could quite easily have been another brand.
If I wanted a monster laptop to upgrade then I would have bought a Clevo/Sager/XMG etc...
The machine having an unlocked CPU was actually a bit of a bonus as I was more than happy with just getting the 6700HQ, I enjoy squeezing the last drop of performance out of my desktop and being able to push a laptop further than its stock specification does appeal however, it was not reason for the purchase. Actually I was kinda sold on the build quality, especially after my previous machine.
As for the GPU and the Firestrike score, well, with the stock performance more or less in line with similarly specced machines as linked earlier, and no throttling @4GHZ might I add, still seems decent to me. That said, I agree that the same silicon should perform the same even in a different machine (assuming the same spec) so I will test further.
I've read enough of your posts to know where you stand with the newer line of Alienware machines and I respect your views but simply put, my requirements are different to yours.

Hey guys,
I just bought an Alienware 15 R2 with a 980M, 16GB RAM, and an i7-6820HK.... I bought the 4K model to avoid the disappointingly dim screen... So I saw in some of the benchmarks with overclocking, Firestrike 1.1 scores of around 9200.... which makes it Oculus-Ready. Now I will be getting the Amplifier, and I will have a 980ti inside for VR gaming.... but with that kind of score, will I be able to run the Vive directly on it when I'm travelling? Or will Optimus still be an issue?
Also, will I be able to connect it to my 4K TV and get 4K output from my laptop, or is the HDMI connection not good enough? -
I just received my 15 r2 last Fri and been testing everything. I noticed my scores were little lower than others in firestrike. Also noticed my card was only showing 540mhz like yours and noticed it with others as well, all running at 540mhz. I switched to performance mode and all seems ok..for now
this is running cpu oc at lv2 and small oc to gpu (+60) core clock
